• install android sdk on kubuntu

  I'm trying to follow the instructions for installing the android sdk found here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/adding-packages.html After i've unpackaged and i run the android program under tools, I don't get all the options that I'm supposed to. The only 2 folders that show up are tools, and extras. Under tools, it only shows the "Android SDK Tools" with the status "Installed". Under the "extas" folder, I have nothing. I've made sure that my http: proxy settings are correct. And I've checked the logs. there are no errors. According to the android developer site, I'm supposed to install the SDK platform tools. has anyone tried this on ubuntu? I also checked and saw others were instructed to do an apt-get install ia32-libs but it failed for me. Besides which, I am running the 32bit os... so I don't think i would need to install that... ?? I've also tried following the instructions found here: http://forums.team-nocturnal.com/showthread.php/772 But... I can't seem to add the personal archive nilarimogard without getting an error message. when i attempt: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 I get the message: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/add-apt-repository", line 125, in ppa_info = get_ppa_info_from_lp(user, ppa_name) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/softwareproperties/ppa.py", line 80, in get_ppa_info_from_lp curl.perform() pycurl.error: (7, "couldn't connect to host") root@jll:/home/me/Documents# any suggestions? • Why are my backlinks not showing on google on this asp.net website with all I've done?

  I recently implemented many SEO techniques for a company on their asp.net website; in 6 months, we jumped from a PR1 to a PR3. But I'm having issues with google backlinking. Here are some of the things I've done: Not only did I set up their own Google+ page 6 months ago, I update it pretty much daily with links, pictures, etc., and I blog about it on my own personal Google+ page and post links, etc. ... They have their own Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and all are updated almost daily. I've listed in as many quality, relevant directories as possible 6 months ago; I've avoided link farms. The site is solid SEO-wise. Key-phrase rich URLs, schema.org & rich snippets. No duplicate content ... www or non-www 301's, trailing slashes, etc. ... all taken care of. Probably a ton of other things, but basically, the site is all set, SEO-wise. Here's what's confounding: When I do a link:www.example.com in Bing/Yahoo, it shows many backlinks. When I do a link:www.example.com in google, it shows up 0 links. Or when I use a site-ranker like Web Site Rank Tool it's showing 0 backlinks from Google. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

• Ubuntu Boot Slow - Late Drive Access

  So I just installed Ubuntu on a brand new Samsung 840 Pro SSD and have noticed that it is slower than expected. The LED access light doesn't start blinking until after 20 seconds or so have passed, after which the boot up seems to actually start. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I have Windows 7 installed on a separate SSD and use Windows Loader as the main loader. Windows Loader points to GRUB2, from which I then start Ubuntu up. The 20 seconds count that I mentioned earlier starts AFTER I select Ubuntu 14.04.1 from the GRUB2 menu. Any help is appreciated. EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have only one partition for / and /home. I intend on using a shared NTFS drive for my documents and other personal files, so I had no need for the /home. I did not make a /swap since I have 12 GB of RAM. I also did not make a /boot since I was told that it's not really necessary in my case.

• VMware9 fails to launch Virtual OS. Ubuntu 12.10 64bit (Unable to change virtual machine power state: Pipe connection has been broken.)

  Another issue I need help with. I use VMware for work on Ubuntu 12.04. However for some reasons my VMware Workstation software generates the following error: Unable to change virtual machine power state: Failed to power on '/home/pst007x/vmware/Windows 7 x64/Windows 7 x64.vmx'. Transport (VMDB) error -14: Pipe connection has been broken. Product: VMware® Workstation Version: 9.0.0 build-812388 Host OS Version: 3.5.0-18-generic Ubuntu 12.10 64bit Kernel Linux 3.5.0-18-generic I have seen patches, but nothing works, and the patches are not maintained, broken links. PLEASE NOTE: I know that this has been asked, but there was no answer given that resolves this issue. Unfortunately I have changed all my office and personal PC's to Ubuntu, and use Win7 in a vm, however since 12.10, vm now fails to launch. For me this is a catastrophe, and makes Ubuntu useless for me to use! I am in a desperate situation here, is there is anyone that can offer any help I would be truly appreciative. I have looked on the VMware forums and the only solution is offered for Fedora, but the people posting there are not clear about what the solution is! thanks PLEASE DO NOT CLOSE THIS QUESTION! I have tried everywhere to find a solution, but I have come up blank... Patches referenced to in other posts do not work in this version of VMware...

• Can the "Documents" standard folder be rescued and how?

  Anyone who likes their Documents folder to contain only things they place there knows that the standard Documents folder is completely unsuitable for this task. Every program seems to want to put its settings, data, or something equally irrelevant into the Documents folder, despite the fact that there are folders specifically for this job. So that this doesn't sound empty, take my personal "Documents" folder as an example. I don't ever use it, in that I never, under any circumstances, save anything into this folder myself. And yet, it contains 46 folders and 3 files at the top level, for a total of 800 files in 500 folders. That's 190 MB of "documents" I didn't create. Obviously any actual documents would immediately get lost in this mess. My question is: can anything be done to improve the situation sufficiently to make "Documents" useful again, say over the next 5 years? Can programmers be somehow educated en-masse not to use it as a dumping ground? Could the OS start reporting some "fake" location hidden under AppData through the existing APIs, while only allowing Explorer and the various Open/Save dialogs to know where the "real" Documents folder resides? Or are any attempts completely futile or even unnecessary?

• Lost Windows 7 files

  My intention was to have a dual boot system with Ubuntu and Windows 7. Obviously I did something wrong because although I had a system menu on booting (is it normal to appear DOS-like?) which gave me an option of booting into windows 7, I was unable to do so. Also, when I booted into Ubuntu, my Windows 7 drive was not available. The Windows 7 drive was an internal 1TB drive partitioned into a 200GB (OS) and a second partition making up the remainder. I was still unable to access this Windows 7 drive even after deleting Ubuntu as I kept getting an 'requires an NTFS drive' error, or something similar. I could not even re-install Windows 7 as the disk was not recognised. I did eventually get the drive back by but I cannot for the life of me remember how. I did try to recover my lost W7 data using Ontrack Easy Recovery (which has always been succesfull in the past for post format recovery) but it would not recognise the 1TB although it was now formatted as NTFS. From other posts on this site, I gather that this is considered a 'Windows 7 Site' problem by Linux users. However, I would dearly love to recover some of my lost Windows 7 files. I had resigned myself to a lot of lost personal data but I happened to notice that a 2TB drive I had connected through a USB docking station had been repartitioned. It must have happened when I installed Ubuntu as I can think of no other explanation. I certainly do not remember consciously requiring Ubuntu to do this.   One note of clarification: I'm getting a lot of comments saying that this question is too personal, too relative, subjective, and that career-path questions get quickly deleted. This is not a question about me or my career. This question is just what the title says: What fields exist that converge programming and business. Now the question: I read this answer regarding off-topic questions, and I was afraid this might be, so I'll try to keep it general and helpful for others. Also, this one has a similar background but formulates a different question from it. I have a Business Administration degree, but I've programmed since I can remember, and it's been my only job for years. However, my problem is the same that the majority of "amateuressional" programmers have: - Incomplete knowledge of the fundamentals. - Anxiety to keep up. - Feeling of not making anything useful of "the other degree". - Afraid of finally becoming a jack of all trades (master of none). Which further studies (specific degrees or fields) exist that allow a person with a BS degree converge into a programming career, without having to sacrifice coding, allowing to further expand the knowledge of C.S. fundamentals, and also without completely sacrificing the first?

• O'reilly certification in PHP worth it?

  I asked this question over on stack overflow but I didn't realise it wasn't really the place for not so technical questions. I've seen quite a few related threads on this forum so I thought I'd try and get some feedback here: This is my first time asking a question on this forum, though I´ve read it a lot. I apologise if this is repeating a thread. I´m interested in getting into web development. I am a video editor by trade but living in Spain the way things are at the moment its very difficult to find work. I have some very basic knowledge of HTML and CSS and a little bit of flash and have designed a few little personal websites myself. I also worked for a online marketing production company where I worked a little on blog design in Blogger amongst other social media. So thats my background, but I´m trying to expand my skills and get into web development as a career or in general part of my skill base, I was thinking particularly about PHP/MySQL. I have worked a little on some of the Lynda.com tutorials and have invested in a book (Sams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache). I´m still finding it very difficult to progress. I know I should really try some practice projects (any reccomendations would be welcome). But I was also thinking about doing one of the O´Reilly certification courses and was wondering whether it would be worthwhile for a noob like me. I hear that the courses are associated with an American University which I guess gives it more clout. Any other thoughts you guys have about how to make progress in learning web development would be fantasic. Thanks in advance.

• Is file permission secured when it transferred from Ubuntu to Windows?

  I am having 9GB text file which is encrypted . This file contains some confidential data . Which is on my system(Ubuntu) and my external HDD (ntfs) . This file get daily updated and then encrypted . But it has to be shared among 2-3 (Windows) person. I defined permission so that no other person can even read this file(chmod 660). It is too large file, so I can't upload it anywhere and it get updated daily basis. But this file travel on Windows OS and Ubuntu also. Even I am having copy of this on my personal computer. Recently it was deleted by some other user over Windows . I just want to know how can I set permission over that file so that it cannot be deleted from any other operating system. If someone delete this file, then I am having data old for couple of days, which is only on my system. I gone through this question it says there is nothing. And from this question I am not able to understand how can I protect it. Can I do anything for preventing this file from being deleted. Then how can I secure this files from getting deleted any suggestion or software or ideas. Maybe I sound silly or this is stupid question. Please don't close it, thanks for any suggestion or solution.

  Do you prefer keeping your Taskbar hidden but still need to keep watch on what time it is? Now you can keep track of the time without the Taskbar using the Date Today extension for Google Chrome. A Look at Date Today with Different Themes This extension does one thing and does it well…it provides you with an “active icon” clock that will let you view the time and date in two fashions. The first is by hovering your mouse over the “Toolbar Clock Button”… And the second is by clicking on the “Toolbar Clock Button” to view an enlarged version. Here you can see the extension in use with five different themes to get an idea of how it might look with the theme that you are currently using. It does stand out very nicely with brighter or darker colored themes. Conclusion While this extension is obviously not for everyone it will make a nice (and useful) addition to Chrome for those who prefer keeping their Taskbar hidden. • Is there an idiot's guide to software licensing somewhere?

  Basically, my knowledge on the issue is zilch other than the fact that open-source and closed-source exists. I'm a web developer (not a designer in the slightest), so I look online for things like icons. I've always been a big fan of these icons, which have a Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License. As far as I can see, this license says 'do whatever you want with them as long as you have a link back to me somewhere'. Is that assumption correct? Just today I found a new icon set, with a much more confusing license (found here), and to be quite honest I have no idea if I'm allowed to use them or not. At the moment I want to just use them for toy stuff that might never see the light of day, but then my source code is stored on Github, is it legal to store the icons there where they're publicly accessible? If I put them on my personal website that might have ads on it to make me five cents every now and then, is that legal? If I use them on a site that offers a free service to users, is that legal? If that site then starts making money (via things like paid subscriptions) or gets bought out by someone (highly unlikely but one day possible) is that legal? Is there some noob guide out there that explains all this stuff, because I would hate to start using this sort of stuff now only to have to change it all later. Even if I buy the icons, there's still licensing issues that I don't understand! :( And this sort of stuff keeps popping up more and more often...

• How to connect to my own WiFi using Broadcom STA drivers?

  I'm trying hard to switch to Linux from Windows because of my engineering project. Unfortunately, everything is against that change! Before I have installed Broadcom STA proprietary drivers, I was seeing on NetworkManager and nm-applet only local radio-internet-access networks. After I installed Broadcom STA, I see my neighbor's wireless network (channel 11, WEP) Neither before nor after the installation is own wireless network available. Computer: Asus Lamborghini VX6 Ubuntu: 12.04 LTS 64-bit Router: ASUS N55U (A1) with newest AsusWRT firmware Network: Channel 5 (tried also 10 and 11, both on 20 and 40MHz bands), WPA2 Personal, 2,4 + 5 GHz (what is not very important, 'cause the wlan card in VX6 is only 2,4GHz). Network works fine on Windows, also through D-Link repeater on the other floor. Unfortunately, same network is invisible to Ubuntu on same machine. I have tried some combinations with other GUIs but it did not work. Are there any better drivers for Ubuntu? I need that network badly, but I'm an Ubuntu newbie, so I don't know how to solve that problem. Please help.

• What's the canonical process for backing up a website?

  This is going to sound terrible, but bear with me. I currently have a cron job that does a mysql dump, a git add all and commit, and a git push to bitbucket. I set this up almost a year ago, when I didn't know much about git, backups, and general web development and administration. I haven't had the time to fix this and do it properly, but the repo has now grown quite big from accumulating large temporary files from my forum, so now I have to do something and I want to do it properly this time around. What processes do semi-large websites and personal site admins use for backing up server content? Based on what I've learned since I set this up, what I'm currently think of doing is: Making changes on a development domain and committing the code frequently Archiving the entire site after a successful deployment from the development domain Having automatic daily database and user-content backups. I still like the idea of backing up sqldumps with git, though. I know git isn't a backup tool and that this is beyond its purpose, but the textual queries that are exported would be easily managed by git and would save a lot of space in archives.

• Two views of Federation: inside out, and outside in

  IDM customers that I speak to have spent a lot of time thinking about enterprise SSO - asking your employees to log in to multiple systems, each with distinct hard to guess (translation: hard to remember) passwords that fit the corporate security policy for length and complexity is a strategy that is just begging for a lot of help-desk password reset calls. So forward thinking organizations have implemented SSO for as many systems as possible. With the mix of Enterprise Apps moving to the cloud, it makes sense to continue this SSO strategy by Federating with those cloud apps and services.  Organizations maintain control, since employee access to the externally hosted apps is provided via the enterprise account.  If the employee leaves, their access to the cloud app is terminated when their enterprise account is disabled.  The employees don't have to remember another username and password - so life is good. From the outside in - I am excited about the increasing use of Social Sign-on - or BYOI (Bring your own Identity).  The convenience of single-sign on is extended to customers/users/prospects when organizations enable access to business services using a social ID.  The last thing I want when visiting a website or blog is to create another account.  So using my Google or Twitter ID is a very nice quick way to get access without having to go through a registration process that creates another username/password that I have to try to remember. The convenience of not having to maintain multiple passwords is obvious, whether you are an employee or customer - and the security benefit of not having lots of passwords to lose or forget is there as well. Are enterprises allowing employees to use their personal (social) IDs for enterprise apps?  Not yet, but we are moving in the right direction, and we will get there some day.

• What do you do to balance the upper or lower case style to name file or folder between work and life? [on hold]

  I am a programmer from China. And I like to use English words to name my files and folders Whether it is for work or life. For example, suck as Movie, Work, QtProjects, Music and so on.And I keep the habit of initial the first letter for file name or folder name in Windows. But now I work on Ubuntu, and I found that all file name and folder name are lowercase in addition to the default folder such as Music, Movie and so on. And then I realize that in Linux world, most peoloe like to use all lowercase to name their files and folders for two reasons (1. Linux is Case sensitive. 2. It is fast for shell command.). And after work, when I switch from Linux to Windows, I confuse to use all lowercase or the first letter uppercase style to name my files in Windows. I'm caught in a dilemma. I think that all lowercase is more efficiency but the first letter uppercase is more readable. I thought for a long time and want to come up with a good answer to blance the two style name conversion. But I failed. I want to ask you that how you balance the uppercase or lowercase habbit in Windows, Mac, Linux between work and personal life style? Thank you very much! (My current solution is that when I am in Linux, I use all lowercase for files and folders, but when I am in Windows and Mac OS X, I couldn't find a good reason to convince me to use all lowercase ( I think in Windows and Mac OS X, the first letter uppercase style for me is more readable and beautiful).

• Photos being copied all over the place

  We have a rather popular website with plenty of photos. Our whole business depends on our content - and the photos are important in this. We invest a lot of time, effort, and money into taking these pictures. On our website we have clear copyright notices, we have the website name and logo in the photos, and we have a Photo Licensing page which states the prices of licensing our photos. Despite all this, our photos are copied by personal and commercial websites alike. We really want to do something about this. We do not want them to take out the photos and leave it at that. We want them to pay for the usage, as we clearly state on our website. Now a few questions come to mind: Can we legally force them to pay right away? Or are we obligated to first write a "Cease and Desist" letter? Photos are used on websites throughout the world. Are there any worldwide rules for this? Has anybody experience with doing these things outside of their home country? Should we hire a lawyer in any country? Or could a local lawyer contact oversees companies directly?

• Is Apple getting out of the general purpose development platform business?

  I've been doing general ANSI C/Console C++/Java/Web development on Mac hardware for about ten years. I make no claims of objective superiority over other platforms, it just satisfies my personal tastes. With the success of the iPhone and the related App store there was some speculation that Apple would get out of the general purpose computer market, and become a closed software ecosystem, focusing on consumer appliances. I pooh-poohed the speculation at the time, but this week Apple announced that a) they were opening an App store for the Mac, b) Java applications would not be eligible for the App store, c) the Apple JVM was being deprecated and might not be available for future releases of OS X. I'm not a Java developer per se, but I work in a research lab that occasionally writes Java applications, and also depends on tools written Java. This has the potential to be a huge pain in the butt for us. As of now, there is no other JVM for OS X that we can point our end users to. Soy Latte and OpenJDK might be appropriate for developers, but the complexity of the installation makes them inappropriate for end users. Eventually I expect Oracle/SUN will produce a replacement JVM for OS X. More worrisome to me is that Apple used to specifically advertise that it was an excellent platform for scientific development, because they supported all major language platforms. Is the deprecation of their JVM a sign that this market no longer interests them?

• Impact of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) on Business and IT Operations

  The impact of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) on business and IT operations varies from company to company. I think more and more companies are starting to view SOA as just another technology that they can incorporate in an existing or new system. One of the driving factors in using SOA is the reduction in maintenance costs and decrease in the time needed to bring products to market. The reductions in costs, and reduced turnaround time can be directly converted in to increased profitability due to less expenditures that are needed in order to maintain or create new systems. My personal perspective on SOA is that it is great for what it is actually intended to do. SOA allows systems to be distributed across networks or even the world while ensuring enterprise processing consistency, data integrity and preventing code duplication. This being said a lot of preparation and work goes into properly designing and implementing an SOA especially if an enterprise wants to take full advantage of its benefits. Even though SOA has recently gotten a lot of hype about its benefits it does not a perfect fit for all situations. At the end of the day SOA is just another tool in my tool belt that I can pull from to create solutions that meet the business’s needs. Based on current industry trends SOA appears to be a very solid technology to use moving forward, especially as more and more companies shift towards cloud based computing. It is important to remember that SOA is one of many technologies that can be used in creating business solutions and I think more time will be spent in the future evaluating if SOA is the right technology for a solution once the initial hype of SOA has calmed down.

• How can find out the device Id of my unmounted DVD?

  When I put a DVD into the DVD drive, it appears in Nautilus Places, but is not automatically mounted. (this is by personal choice). In this unmounted state, mount (of course) reports nothing, and likewise for df.. but Nautilus is aware of the DVD hardware unit and has read the Label; which it shows in Places So it seems to me that Nautilus has already accessed the DVD devices (Did it temporarily mount it?)... The main point of my question was to determine how to find the device Id of an unmounted device .. but as I've been writing this, I now think it may not be as simple as that... This issue came up because I wanted to test this command cat iso-pieces.* | growisofs -Z /dev/dvd=/dev/stdin, but then realized that I didn't know how to get my DVD's device Id. ... and does the above command requires a mounted device, or does it write directly to the device? ... as you can see, I'm a bit vague about devices :) Come to think of it maybe Nautalus read the DVD device directly, because when all is said and done, something has to read/write directly to it. info growisofs says: Under Linux it will most likely be an ide-scsi device such as "/dev/scd0 How can I find this Id via a script?

• One good reason for a rewrite

  I have a personal web project I cut my teeth on learning how to program. I wrote it in PHP and learned as I went. I eventually I re-factored it to use MVC and removed all mixing of php/html. Right now it has no users, save myself, and it makes no money. I have a strong desire to rewrite the entire app. Which really isn't that large of an app. I have a lot of reasons why I should not rewrite it. I know that I should move forward. It's a working app now and it will only set me back to rewrite it. But I can't shake this feeling that I would be better off using a different programming language in the long run. That I'd enjoy it more. That I'd feel comfortable with it. I feel like my one good reason to rewrite my app is that I have a gut feeling that I should. PHP seems like a hack thrown together. I want to use a language that feels more elegant to me. Any feedback you have would be welcome.

• Do I expect too much work from an employer? [closed]

  I recently switched jobs because I was not challenged enough, the work would come in waves, and I HATED the people I worked with. I am a recent college grad, May 2009, and based off the 3 internships I had, and 2 full time jobs I obtained, I am finding that employers can not keep me satisfied with the amount of work. At my new job, I like the people I work with, I am challenged, but I still do not get enough work. I hate down time. I always want to have something to work on AT LEAST 6 out of the 8 hours. I was surprised that my new employer actually hired me because the majority of the technologies they implement, I had minimal exposure to. I never programmed in the technologies they use outside of one class in college. My greatest strength is that I am an extremely fast learner. I can pick up new technologies with relative ease. They gave me a project to work on by myself and I think they assumed it would take me longer to complete. Now that I finished that app, they are struggling to find something for me to do. I am not sure if it is bad timing being close to the holidays, my manager dealing with personal issues at home, how quickly I finished the first project, or that I expect too much out of an employer? If so, what are good things to do on all this downtime?! EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback! EDIT 2: I am going to "unaccept" the answer in an effort to keep the question open. As a few people have mentioned, this is a great discussion on how to grow as a new worker in the programming field. • Pros and cons of PHP vs C,C++ as language in a programming interview ?

  Hi All, Though this is a matter of personal choice and comfort. I would want your views on a situation like this. Programmer A has been working on PHP for some years, and has had prior experience in C.C++ during algorithm courses in university. The current fluency is good is PHP,but C,C++ can also be brushed up. So for interviews with major companies who put lot of emphasis on algorithms and data structures in programming interview e.g. binary trees, linked lists, arrays , strings . What should programmer A do ? Try to implement those things in PHP ( which is generally more suited for web development rather than programming contests/interviews ) or Or brush up the C,C++ skills and keep them as primary tool for tackling interview questions. What are advantages/ disadvantages of each language for an environment like programming contest or an interview ? Why would you recommend,not recommend Programmer A to participate in a contest like google code Jam/ ACM ICPC using PHP instead of C++ ? ( assuming PHP is allowed as a language there)

• Should I use a config file or database for storing business rules?

I am currently programming a web app that has some models that have properties that can only be from a set of values, e.g. (not actual example as the web app data confidential): light-type = sphere / cube / cylinder The light type can only be the above three values but according to TPP I should always code as if they could change and place their values in a config file. As there are several incidents of this throughout the app, my question is: Should I store possibly values like these in: a config file: 'light-types' = array(sphere, cube, cylinder), 'other-type' = value, 'etc = etc-value a single table in a database with one line for each config item a database with a table for each config item (e.g. table: light_types; columns: id, name) some other way? • Facebook - Isn't this a big vulnerability risk for users? (After Password Change)

  I would like to know you opinions as programmers / developers. When I changed my Facebook password yesterday, by mistake I entered the old one and got this: Am I missing something here or this is a big potencial risk for users. In my opinion this is a problem BECAUSE it is FaceBook and is used by, well, everyone and the latest statistics show that 76.3% of the users are idiots [source:me], that is more that 3/4!! All kidding aside: Isn't this useful information for an attacker? It reveals private information about the user! It could help the attacker gain access to another site in which the user used the same password Granted, you should't use use the same password twice (but remember: 76.3%!!!) Doesn't this simply increase the surface area for attackers? It increases the chances of getting useful information at least. In a site like Facebook 1st choice for hackers and (bad) people interested in valued personal information shouldn't anything increasing the chance of a vulnerability be removed? Am I missing something? Am I being paranoid? Will 76.3% of the accounts will be hacked after this post? Thanks in advance!!
