  • Refactor/rewrite code or continue?

    I just completed a complex piece of code. It works to spec, it meets performance requirements etc etc but I feel a bit anxious about it and am considering rewriting and/or refactoring it. Should I do this (spending time that could otherwise be spent on features that users will actually notice)? The reasons I feel anxious about the code are: The class hierarchy is complex and not obvious Some classes don't have a well defined purpose (they do a number of unrelated things) Some classes use others internals (they're declared as friend classes) to bypass the layers of abstraction for performance, but I feel they break encapsulation by doing this Some classes leak implementation details (eg, I changed a map to a hash map earlier and found myself having to modify code in other source files to make the change work) My memory management/pooling system is kinda clunky and less-than transparent They look like excellent reasons to refactor and clean code, aiding future maintenance and extension, but could be quite time consuming. Also, I'll never be perfectly happy with any code I write anyway... So, what does stackoverflow think? Clean code or work on features?

    Hi, I'm writing a Maven plugin that merges CSS files together. So all the CSS files that match /foo/bar/*.css might get merged to /foo/merged.css. A concern is that in a file such as /foo/bar/baz.css there might be a property such as: background: url("images/pic.jpg") So when the file is merged into /foo/merged.css this will need to be changed to background: url("bar/images/pic.jpg") The recalculated URL obviously depends on 3 factors: original URL original CSS file location merged CSS file location Assuming that the original and merged CSS files are both on the same filesystem, is there a general formula (or Java library) that can be used to calculate the new url given these 3 inputs?     I have multiple domain names assigned to the same site and I want all possible access combinations redirected to one domain. The logic would be: if entire URL does NOT start with https://maindomain.ext then REDIRECT to https://maindomain.ext/(plus_whatever_else_that_followed).   • With AMD style modules in JavaScript is there any benefit to namespaces?

    Coming from C++ originally and seeing lots of Java programmers doing the same we brought namespaces to JavaScript. See Google's closure library as an example where they have a main namespace, goog and under that many more namespaces like goog.async, goog.graphics But now, having learned the AMD style of requiring modules it seems like namespaces are kind of pointless in JavaScript. Not only pointless but even arguably an anti-pattern. What is AMD? It's a way of defining and including modules that removes all direct dependencies. Effectively you do this // some/module.js define([ 'name/of/needed/module', 'name/of/someother/needed/module', ], function( RefToNeededModule, RefToSomeOtherNeededModule) { ...code... return object or function }); This format lets the AMD support code know that this module needs name/of/needed/module.js and name/of/someother/needed/module.js loaded. The AMD code can load all the modules and then, assuming no circular dependencies, call the define function on each module in the correct order, record the object/function returned by the module as it calls them, and then call any other modules' define function with references to those modules. This seems to remove any need for namespaces. In your own code you can call the reference to any other module anything you want. For example if you had 2 string libraries, even if they define similar functions, as long as they follow the AMD pattern you can easily use both in the same module. No need for namespaces to solve that. It also means there's no hard coded dependencies. For example in Google's closure any module could directly reference another module with something like var value = goog.math.someMathFunc(otherValue) and if you're unlucky it will magically work where as with AMD style you'd have to explicitly include the math library otherwise the module wouldn't have a reference to it since there are no globals with AMD. On top of that dependency injection for testing becomes easy. None of the code in the AMD module references things by namespace so there is no hardcoded namespace paths, you can easily mock classes at testing time. Is there any other point to namespaces or is that something that C++ / Java programmers are bringing to JavaScript that arguably doesn't really belong?

    I have a site and already trying to do a little url rewritting but want to know if there is a solution to make it better my current state urls look like this http://snit.us/Home/tabid/314/CN/1/RE/23/United_States_Missouri.aspx I want to change them to something more ordered so in my new scheme i want to do this http://snit.us/Home/United_States/Missouri/default.aspx obviously the point is that if i remove missouri from the new url it would find all United_States - etc etc etc even better would be to have http://snit.us/Home/United_States/Missouri so its even less cluttered

    Hi, There exists a blog at domain.com I wish to do a 301 redirect on anything that is after domain.com/[category/[post-name] to domain.com/blog/[category]/[post-name] The key here is when someone hits domain.com they just stay there. Only if there's any reference to posts within domain.com that I wish for the redirect to work. Will hold this for at most 6 months, until SEO settles, and then remove the redirect. What is the best way of achieving this with .htaccess ?     Hi guys, I have an internal app (Jira) that i want to use internally and externally, now there might be another way of doing this in which case i'm open to it, but this is what i have so far: URL one: https://domainname.com/jira - external domain name for it URL two: https://domainname.local/jira - internal network name for it. I am running Apache as a reverse proxy and I have this: <Location /jira> ProxyPass http://127.0.0.1:8080/jira ProxyPassReverse http://127.0.0.1:8080/jira </Location> Jira creates all of its links using a base url, which in this case is set to 'https://domainname.local/jira', so obviously when pages get served to the outside world they have .local on them. The question is, is there a way to have the content rewritten as it is served in order to change the .local addresses within the HTML to be the .com ones? Or am i being a retard and there is an easier way to solve this? Cheers for any help.... Andy

    We have some code which needs to run faster. Its already profiled so we would like to make use of multiple threads. Usually I would setup an in memory queue, and have a number of threads taking jobs of the queue and calculating the results. For the shared data I would use a ConcurrentHashMap or similar. I don't really want to go down that route again. From what I have read using actors will result in cleaner code and if I use akka migrating to more than 1 jvm should be easier. Is that true? However, I don't know how to think in actors so I am not sure where to start.
