    I have got a table which contains 5 column and query requirements: update row no 8 (or id=8) set its column 2, column 3's value from id 9th column 2, column 3 value. means all value of column 2, 3 should be shifted to column 2, 3 of upper row (start from row no 8) and value of last row's 2, 3 will be null For example, with just 3 rows, the first row is untouched, the second to N-1th rows are shifted once, and the Nth row has nulls. id math science sst hindi english 1 11 12 13 14 15 2 21 22 23 24 25 3 31 32 33 34 35 The result of query of id=2 should be: id math science sst hindi english 1 11 12 13 14 15 2 31 32 23 24 25 //value of 3rd row (col 2,3) shifted to row 2 3 null null 33 34 35 This process should run for all rows whose id 2 Please help me to create this update query I am using MS sqlserver 2005

  • Performance improvement to a big if clause in SQL Server function

    I am maintaining a function in SQL Server 2005, that based on an integer input parameter needs to call different functions e.g. IF @rule_id = 1 -- execute function 1 ELSE IF @rule_id = 2 -- execute function 2 ELSE IF @rule_id = 3 ... etc The problem is that there are a fair few rules (about 100), and although the above is fairly readable, its performance isn't great. At the moment it's implemented as a series of IF's that do a binary-chop, which is much faster, but becomes fairly unpleasant to read and maintain. Any alternative ideas for something that performs well and is fairly maintainable?

    Hi I am trying to find rows that are not in one table and insert them into another. The table I am trying to insert into has less columns then the other one. These columns are null but it would be cool if I could hardcode a value before I do the insert. But I am having so much trouble with just trying to get it to insert. I have something like this SELECT p.ProductId, p.ProductName INTO SomeTable FROM Product as p WHERE p.ProductName != 'iPad' I will get a error like this though Msg 4104, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The multi-part identifier "p.ProductId" could not be bound. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I copied and pasted the names in so I don't think it is a spelling mistake. I am using ms sql 2005 express.

  • Persistent SQL Table lock from C#

    I'm trying to create a persistent SQL (SQL Server 2005) lock on a table level. I'm not updating/querying the specified table, but I need to prevent a third party application from updating the locked table as a means to prevent transactions from being posted (the table I wish to lock is the key on their transaction that interferes with my processing). From my experience the table is only locked for the time a specific transaction is taking place. Any ideas? The 3rd party developer has logged this feature as an enhancement, but since they are in the middle of rolling out a major release I can expect to wait at least 6 months for this. I know that this isn't a great solution, since their software will fall over but it is of a critical enough nature that we're willing to live with the consequences.

In that i have a table named "resourcetable" which has two columns. now i need to read the data in the table into a datagridview. I can do this by using the connection string and querry by giving the table name. But my problem is i have a button and if i click on that button, an open dialog box should open and i should be able to select a database amomng many databases and in that selected database i have to select one table amomg many tables. i.e select a table ofa particular database. and the contents of that table are to be displayed in a datagridview.

    I've never been able to find a good script or plugin for sql server Management Studio (2005 and or 2008) for a very common scripting need: specifying a few/all rows in a table and scripting their insert. You can guess my story: I've got some configuration data in my dev db and I need to script it for deployment to UAT and then production. I've found a few cludgy systems in the past, that were more trouble than they were worth. I need something free and unobtrusive. Once I find it I'll share it with the other 20 developers in my shop who are annoyed by this. Aren't we all annoyed by this by the way? What is the best, easiest, free, way to specify a few/all rows in a table and get a script their insert?

  • Creating audit triggers in SQL Server

    I need to implement change tracking on two tables in my SQL Server 2005 database. I need to audit additions, deletions, updates (with detail on what was updated). I was planning on using a trigger to do this, but after poking around on Google I found that it was incredibly easy to do this incorrectly, and I wanted to avoid that on the get-go. Can anybody post an example of an update trigger that accomplishes this successfully and in an elegant manner? I am hoping to end up with an audit table with the following structure: ID LogDate TableName TransactionType (update/insert/delete) RecordID FieldName OldValue NewValue ... but I am open for suggestions. In this part Serdar looks at configuration guidelines for SQL Server memory management. Part 3: Configuration Guidelines for Hyper-V Dynamic Memory and SQL Server Now that we understand SQL Server Memory Management and Hyper-V Dynamic Memory basics, let’s take a look at general configuration guidelines in order to utilize benefits of Hyper-V Dynamic Memory in your SQL Server VMs. Requirements Host Operating System Requirements Hyper-V Dynamic Memory feature is introduced with Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Therefore in order to use Dynamic Memory for your virtual machines, you need to have Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 in your Hyper-V host. Guest Operating System Requirements In addition to this Dynamic Memory is only supported in Standard, Web, Enterprise and Datacenter editions of windows running inside VMs. Make sure that your VM is running one of these editions. For additional requirements on each operating system see “Dynamic Memory Configuration Guidelines” here. SQL Server Requirements All versions of SQL Server support Hyper-V Dynamic Memory. However, only certain editions of SQL Server are aware of dynamically changing system memory. To have a truly dynamic environment for your SQL Server VMs make sure that you are running one of the SQL Server editions listed below: ·         SQL Server 2005 Enterprise ·         SQL Server 2008 Enterprise / Datacenter Editions ·         SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise / Datacenter Editions Configuration guidelines for other versions of SQL Server are covered below in the FAQ section. Guidelines for configuring Dynamic Memory Parameters Here is how to configure Dynamic Memory for your SQL VMs in a nutshell: Hyper-V Dynamic Memory Parameter Recommendation Startup RAM 1 GB + SQL Min Server Memory Maximum RAM > SQL Max Server Memory Memory Buffer % 5 Memory Weight Based on performance needs   Startup RAM In order to ensure that your SQL Server VMs can start correctly, ensure that Startup RAM is higher than configured SQL Min Server Memory for your VMs. Otherwise SQL Server service will need to do paging in order to start since it will not be able to see enough memory during startup. Also note that Startup Memory will always be reserved for your VMs. This will guarantee a certain level of performance for your SQL Servers, however setting this too high will limit the consolidation benefits you’ll get out of your virtualization environment. Maximum RAM This one is obvious. If you’ve configured SQL Max Server Memory for your SQL Server, make sure that Dynamic Memory Maximum RAM configuration is higher than this value. Otherwise your SQL Server will not grow to memory values higher than the value configured for Dynamic Memory. Memory Buffer % Memory buffer configuration is used to provision file cache to virtual machines in order to improve performance. Due to the fact that SQL Server is managing its own buffer pool, Memory Buffer setting should be configured to the lowest value possible, 5%. Configuring a higher memory buffer will prevent low resource notifications from Windows Memory Manager and it will prevent reclaiming memory from SQL Server VMs. Memory Weight Memory weight configuration defines the importance of memory to a VM. Configure higher values for the VMs that have higher performance requirements. VMs with higher memory weight will have more memory under high memory pressure conditions on your host. Questions and Answers Q1 – Which SQL Server memory model is best for Dynamic Memory? The best SQL Server model for Dynamic Memory is “Locked Page Memory Model”. This memory model ensures that SQL Server memory is never paged out and it’s also adaptive to dynamically changing memory in the system. This will be extremely useful when Dynamic Memory is attempting to remove memory from SQL Server VMs ensuring no SQL Server memory is paged out. You can find instructions on configuring “Locked Page Memory Model” for your SQL Servers here. Q2 – What about other SQL Server Editions, how should I configure Dynamic Memory for them? Other editions of SQL Server do not adapt to dynamically changing environments. They will determine how much memory they should allocate during startup and don’t change this value afterwards. Therefore make sure that you configure a higher startup memory for your VM because that will be all the memory that SQL Server utilize Tune Maximum Memory and Memory Buffer based on the other workloads running on the system. If there are no other workloads consider using Static Memory for these editions. Q3 – What if I have multiple SQL Server instances in a VM? Having multiple SQL Server instances in a VM is not a general recommendation for predictable performance, manageability and isolation. In order to achieve a predictable behavior make sure that you configure SQL Min Server Memory and SQL Max Server Memory for each instance in the VM. And make sure that: ·         Dynamic Memory Startup Memory is greater than the sum of SQL Min Server Memory values for the instances in the VM ·         Dynamic Memory Maximum Memory is greater than the sum of SQL Max Server Memory values for the instances in the VM Q4 – I’m using Large Page Memory Model for my SQL Server. Can I still use Dynamic Memory? The short answer is no. SQL Server does not dynamically change its memory size when configured with Large Page Memory Model. In virtualized environments Hyper-V provides large page support by default. Most of the time, Large Page Memory Model doesn’t bring any benefits to a SQL Server if it’s running in virtualized environments. Q5 – How do I monitor SQL performance when I’m trying Dynamic Memory on my VMs? Use the performance counters below to monitor memory performance for SQL Server: Process - Working Set: This counter is available in the VM via process performance counters. It represents the actual amount of physical memory being used by SQL Server process in the VM. SQL Server – Buffer Cache Hit Ratio: This counter is available in the VM via SQL Server counters. This represents the paging being done by SQL Server. A rate of 90% or higher is desirable. Conclusion These blog posts are a quick start to a story that will be developing more in the near future. We’re still continuing our testing and investigations to provide more detailed configuration guidelines with example performance numbers with a white paper in the upcoming months. Now it’s time to give SQL Server and Hyper-V Dynamic Memory a try. Use this guidelines to kick-start your environment.   • Problem with MS DTC on SQL2008 win server 2k8 with linked server from sql2000 win server 2k

    Hi, We have migrated our db from sql2000 win server 2k to sql2008 win server 2k8. We have linked server from sql2000 win server 2k. By our opinion the problem is with DTC and we have made a lot of setting that we found as solution for our problem, but still the problem exist. There is no any error or worning or information niether in the sql log nor in win event viewer. The application is hanging out and at the end the time out exception is shown. What we have done till now: Enable Network DTC Access with inbound and outbound with No Authentication Required on win 2k8 We have opened RPC dynamic port allocation through registry on 2k and 2k8 We have entered subkey TurnOffRpcSecurity in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSDTC and made it enable on 2k and 2k8 We have added exception for DTC in firewall for all entities What we have notice that when we restart SQL service and make the first try for our transaction the following is shown: "Attempting to initialize Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC). This is an informational message only. No user action is required." and after it: "Recovery of any in-doubt distributed transactions involving Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) has completed.   • SQL 2005 Transaction Rollback Hung–unresolved deadlock

    Encountered an interesting issue recently with a SQL 2005 sp3 Enterprise Edition system. Every weekend, a full database reindex was being run on this system – normally this took around one and a half hours. Then, one weekend, the job ran for over 17 hours  - and had yet to complete... At this point, DBA cancelled the job. Job status is now cancelled – issue over…   However, cancelling the job had not killed the reindex transaction – DBCC OPENTRAN was still showing the transaction being open. The oldest open transaction in the database was now over 17 hours old.  Consequently, transaction log % used growing dramatically and locks still being held in the database... Further attempts to kill the transaction did nothing. ie we had a transaction which could not be killed. In sysprocesses, it was apparent the SPID was in rollback status, but the spid was not accumulating CPU or IO. Was the SPID stuck ? On examination of the SQL errorlog – shortly after the reindex had started, a whole bunch of deadlock output had been produced by trace flag 1222. Then this :- spid5s      ***Stack Dump being sent to   xxxxxxx\SQLDump0042.txt spid5s      * ******************************************************************************* spid5s      * spid5s      * BEGIN STACK DUMP: spid5s      *   12/05/10 01:04:47 spid 5 spid5s      * spid5s      * Unresolved deadlock spid5s      * spid5s      *   spid5s      * ******************************************************************************* spid5s      * ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- spid5s      * Short Stack Dump spid5s      Stack Signature for the dump is 0x000001D7 spid5s      External dump process return code 0x20000001. Unresolved deadlock – don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these before…. A quick call to Microsoft support confirmed the following bug had been hit :- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961479 So, only option to get rid of the hung spid – to restart SQL Server… Fortunately SQL Server restarted without any issues. I was pleasantly surprised to see that recovery on this particular database was fast. However, restarting SQL Server to fix an issue is not something I would normally rush to do... Short term fix – the reindex was changed to use MAXDOP of 1. Longer term fix will be to apply the correct CU, or wait for SQL 2005 sp 4 ?? This should be released any day soon I hope..

    I'd like to have a macro in Visual Studio 2005 that calls a DOS command and redirects the output (stdout and stderr) to a file. Just calling the command and "" redirecting it will not capture stderr, so there are two parts to this: calling a DOS command capturing both stderr and stdout to a file during that call I'd then like to open this file in Visual Studio after the command completes. I'm new to Visual Studio 2005 macro writing, and VB/VBA, so that's the kind of help that I'm looking for. Thanks, Mark

Say by joining to another table perhaps?

This can either be done in a SQL Stored Procedure, or it can be incorporated into the .Net app that's generating this data, so the solution doesn't really need to be "one big SQL script", but can be :) (SQL-2005)

    I'm trying to drop a SQL Server database from .NET code. I've tried using the SMO classes but get an exception saying the database is in use. Then I tried executing a query (opening a SqlConnection, executing a SqlCommand), along the lines of: ALTER DATABASE foo SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE (pause) DROP DATABASE foo But still I get an exception saying the database is in use. How do I do this? (Or, how does SQL Server Management Studio implement the Drop database and close existing connections?)

    Hi. Does each column of a table in SQL Server have a unique id? I've looked into sys.columns and the column_id there is merely the order of the columns which changes if the order of the column is changed. I'd like to know if SQL Server maintains a unique id for each column as it does for each table and other objects. And if it does, how can I get that? Thanks.
