    I'm seeing some intermittent CPU usage spikes to 100%, sort of correlated to these log entries: [27-Feb-2012 13:29:29] PHP Fatal error: PHP Startup: apc_mmap: mmap failed: in Unknown on line 0 [27-Feb-2012 13:29:30] PHP Fatal error: PHP Startup: apc_mmap: mmap failed: in Unknown on line 0 [27-Feb-2012 13:29:31] PHP Fatal error: PHP Startup: apc_mmap: mmap failed: in Unknown on line 0 [27-Feb-2012 13:29:31] PHP Fatal error: PHP Startup: apc_mmap: mmap failed: in Unknown on line 0 phpinfo() indicates that APC is set up, and as far as I can tell this error doesn't cause visible 500 errors on the live site, which is a WordPress install that gets about 600k views monthly. Google's been unhelpful so far, and I was hoping that someone here had some insight as to what's causing this and how to fix it. Curiously, this error only shows up /usr/local/apache2/logs/error_log and not the error_log for the cpanel-configured site.

  • Cron stopped working, partially working.

    Our cron script stopped working in different dates in August. What can be the possible reasons? We did not change anything. Our hosting showed us a log where we can see that cron is executing our scripts. But, nothing is happening in our scripts. If we manually execute the scripts, we're getting correct results like before. I showed the commands to hosting and they showed me that the commands are working. What should I tell my hosting? what should I do? They are php scripts which are executed by CRON and they just post to facebook and twitter. They don't execute any hard or huge things. I even asked my hosting if we broke any rules.

    In Chrome 20 and older versions, you could simply open any .user.js file in Chrome and it would prompt you to install the user script. However, in Chrome 21 and up, it downloads the file instead, and displays a warning at the top saying “Extensions, apps, and user scripts can only be added from the Chrome Web Store”. The “Learn More” link points to http://support.google.com/chrome_webstore/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2664769, but that page doesn’t say anything about user scripts, only about extensions in .crx format, apps, and themes. This part sounded interesting: Enterprise Administrators: You can specify URLs that are allowed to install extensions, apps, and themes directly through the ExtensionInstallSources policy. So, I ran the following commands, then restarted Chrome and Chrome Canary: defaults write com.google.Chrome ExtensionInstallSources -array "https://gist.github.com/*" defaults write com.google.Chrome.canary ExtensionInstallSources -array "https://gist.github.com/*" Sadly, these settings only seem to affect extensions, apps, and themes (as it says in the text), not user scripts. (I’ve filed a bug asking to make this setting affect user scripts as well.) Any ideas on how to install a private user script (that I don’t want to add to the Chrome Web Store) in Chrome 21+? Update: The problem was that gist.github.com’s raw URLs redirect to a different domain.   • MySQL taking a long time to start

    I'm running Windows Server 2008 with MySQL installed and every time I reboot the server the MySQL Service doesn't start right away. A look into the Windows Eventlog shows that the MySQL Service was hung at startup. Looking at the Services.msc console shows the service state at Starting... Eventually, like 10 minutes, the MySQL Service actually finishes the startup process and the database becomes available for my Wordpress server... I looked at the MySQL .err files and didn't find anything that would indicate a delay in the statup process... Can anyone suggest a way to determine what is causing the delay, and more importantly, how to prevent the delay in the MySQL Startup? UPDATE: Here is the .err log contents from the shutdown to the startup complete.   • What can cause Powershell execution policy not to be taken into account?

    We have in our infrastructure a number of powershell scripts used for various tasks ranging from user login to support technician simulating a user context. These scripts are centralized on our file server (through DFS) for easier management. Some of them are run at logon, some are run through published Citrix applications. We have applied a policy for the whole domain and all users that sets the Powershell execution policy to "unrestricted" so that the scripts can run from the file server. This works perfectly fine for logon script (at least, so far) but for scripts that are run later (usually through a published application but the same applies when using terminal services and a full desktop), the results are inconsistent: some users can run the script fine, some are always prompted in the powershell console for letting the scripts run. I cannot find anything that could cause this behavior and it's really inconsistent: if I start powershell manually and runs get-executionpolicy, I am told that the current policy is unrestricted. Yet, if from the same session I try to run a script through a program that calls powershell <script file name> <parameters> I get prompted before the script can run. What could cause such behavior ?

    I have eAccelerator installed on a server running Wordpress using PHP/Apache on CentOS. I am occassionally getting persistent "white pages", which presumably are PHP Fatal Errors (although these errors don't appear in my error_log). These "white pages" are sprinkled here and there throughout the site. They persist until I go to my eAccelerator control.php page and clear/clean/purge my caches, which suggests to me that I've configured eAccelerator improperly. Here are my current /etc/php.ini settings: memory_limit = 128M; eaccelerator.shm_size="64", where shm.size is "the amount of shared memory eAccelerator should allocate to cache PHP scripts" (see http://eaccelerator.net/wiki/Settings) eaccelerator.shm_max="0", where shm_max is "the maximum size a user can put in shared memory with functions like eaccelerator_put ... The default value is "0" which disables the limit" eaccelerator.shm_ttl="0" - "When eAccelerator doesn't have enough free shared memory to cache a new script it will remove all scripts from shared memory cache that haven't been accessed in at least shm_ttl seconds. By default this value is set to "0" which means that eAccelerator won't try to remove any old scripts from shared memory." eaccelerator.shm_prune_period="0" - "When eAccelerator doesn't have enough free shared memory to cache a script it tries to remove old scripts if the previous try was made more then "shm_prune_period" seconds ago. Default value is "0" which means that eAccelerator won't try to remove any old script from shared memory." eaccelerator.keys = "shm_only" - "These settings control the places eAccelerator may cache user content. ... 'shm_only' cache[s] data in shared memory" On my phpinfo page, it says: memory_limit 128M Version 0.9.5.3 and Caching Enabled true On my eAccelerator control.php page, it says 64 MB of total RAM available Memory usage 77.70% (49.73MB/ 64.00MB) 27.6 MB is used by cached scripts in the PHP opcode cache (I added up the file sizes myself) 22.1 MB is used by the cache keys, which is populated by the Wordpress object cache. My questions are: Is it true that there is only 36.4 MB of room in the eAccelerator cache for total "cache keys" (64 MB of total RAM minus whatever is taken by cached scripts, which is 27.6 MB at the moment)? What happens if my app tries to write more than 22.1 MB of cache keys to the eAccelerator memory cache? Does this cause eAccelerator to go crazy, like I've seen? If I change eaccelerator.shm_max to be equal to (say) 32 MB, would that avoid this problem? Do I also need to change shm_ttl and shm_prune_period to make eAccelerator respect the MB limit set by shm_max? Thanks! :-)

    I have umpteen backups trying to restore my scripts I had in the netlogon share but when I go to them the folder is empty. Does backup not back those scripts in netlogon up?     Say you have a computer with the system drive encrypted by BitLocker and you're not using a PIN so the computer will boot up unattended. What happens if an attacker boots the system up into the Windows Preinstallation Environment? Will they have access to the encrypted drive? Does it change if you have a TPM vs. using only a USB startup key? What I'm trying to determine is whether the TPM / USB startup key is usable without booting from the original operating system. In other words, if you're using a USB startup key and the machine is rebooted normally then the data would still be protected unless an attacker was able to log in. But what if the hacker just boots the server into a Windows Preinstallation Environment with the USB startup key plugged in? Would they then have access to the data? Or would that require the recovery key? Ideally the recovery key would be required when booted like this, but I haven't seen this documented anywhere.

    I have the following problem: I need to run some scripts on a Ubuntu machine but I do not want those scripts to be visible by anybody. What could be the best way to do that ? I was thinking of the following: create a particular user Add the scripts in this user's home directory Protect + crypt the user's home directory = Can I run the script from outside if the directory is crypted ? Can superuser see the content of the home dir ? Is there a right way to do this ? UPDATE I thing the best way would be that root own those scripts. In this case I would need to allow an another user to modify the network configuration. Is it possible to ONLY provide network rights to a user ? (via sudo or else)

    How to execute /home/scripts/test.sh file in php Previously i have placed 'test.sh' file in the /usr/bin and calling in my php file like this exec('test.sh ' . escapeshellarg($testString)); But for security reasons i moved .sh file to /home/scripts directory and in my php i am calling like this exec('/home/scripts/test.sh ' . escapeshellarg($testString)); But it is not working now. Please suggest me how to achieve this.

  • Creating ip alias on bonded interface ie. bond0:1

    System: HP Proliant DL360 G5 running CentOS 5.4 Bonded interface is working fine for a long time. I just went to add an alias the way I always have on a regular interface, and on first check it works (pinging on the local box) but it is not accessable from outside (iptables is turned off). In addition with this setup the normal network response started to decline, hanging for around a minute before I could get a prompt on login.   • Please help me get rid of asmonitor.exe

    It might be silly and I trully apologize if the question is not apropriate here, but I have really tried and got to nowhere. I have a windows xp startup error which indicates something about asmonitor.exe program from the ActualSpy keylogger. I had installed but removed ActualSpy keylogger using Superantispyware or something close. I have searched the registries and found a asmonitor entry deleted. I looked at startup programs and can not find the asmonitor program. In addition, I searched the c: drive using regular explorer search and searched using ESET NOD32 antivirus. In each case I cannot find the application... I have even looked at startup programs using msinfo32 command. msconfig-startup NOTHING! it drives me crazy! I can't get rid of it. it is still showing up at windows startup! Where do I find this little program? where is it located? I don't want it to keep showing up. I don't want programs that can do it.. or maybe free ones. But I prefer manual solutions. aren't are any?

  • How to fix Windows 7 when System Recovery Options hangs?

    The battery power ran out on my HP G60 laptop and it shut down. Even after recharging, Windows 7 will now not start up. After any attempted startup, it bluescreens and takes me to the "Startup Repair (recommended)" / "Start Windows Normally" console screen. "Startup Repair (recommended)" appears to be the right choice, but when I choose it, I get taken to a screen which appears to be System Recovery Options (it's the same wallpaper as the screenshots here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html). However, I just get a cursor with nothing else; no "System Recovery Options" window ever pops up. (A black console screen does pop up for a split-second but too fast to be able to read the text.) The empty screen with cursor hangs indefinitely. System Recovery Options normally runs off of a partition on the laptop hard drive. When I got the laptop, I also created a System Repair Disc (in fact I have more than one) and when I try use any of them; they all result in the same wallpaper and empty screen with lone cursor. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing. The computer did not come with a Windows 7 installation disc, so there's no obvious way to reinstall Windows 7. Safe mode does not work; startup fails and I just get sent back to the "Startup Repair (recommended)"/"Start Windows Normally" console screen. "Start in last good state" does not work either, same result as above. Running a memory & hard disk check found no errors. Do I have any options at all? "System Recovery Options" seems to be what I want, but the screen that is supposed to take me to them just hangs.

Script works just fine if I call it from terminal, but it doesn't work if executed from crontab using @reboot: #!/usr/bin/env bash #1 make sure we have enough workspaces gconftool-2 --set -t int /apps/metacity/general/num_workspaces 7 #2. Update 2 I've tried to launch script from System Preferences Startup Applications /home/andrei/andreiscripts/startup.sh >> /home/andrei/Desktop/out.txt 2>&1 but script only opened first gnome-terminal in workspace 6... and wouldn't continue executing the rest of the script until I close that gnome-terminal and so on....

  • IIS 7 SSO stops working during high CPU load? [migrated]

    On our IIS7 site (Windows 2008 Server), we have set up single sign-on (SSO). It seems to work fine most of the time, but when the CPU load becomes high, SSO authentication completely stops working. I did some research and tried this suggestion to increase the max number of worker processes in the default app pool, but the increase did not help. Some details: The site is a WordPress blog. The server has plenty of RAM (2 GB) and free disk space. SSO is achieved by putting a copy of the WordPress login page (wp-login.php) into a subfolder below the root that has anonymous authentication disabled, and then redirecting the browser to it. This was the recommendation of Microsoft given to our consultants. To increase CPU load for testing, I have three scripts hit the home page simultaneously, over and over. This drives CPU to 100%. When these scripts are running, SSO authentication simply doesn't happen. As soon as I stop the scripts, SSO works again. (I should mention that the SSO problem also happens when many users visit the site at once....) The WordPress database process (mysqld) is not stressed at all by the scripts. I would be happy to provide further diagnostics. Any help appreciated!

  • Is it okay to use a language that isn't supported by your company for some tasks?

    I work for a company that supports several languages: COBOL, VB6, C# and Java. I use those languages for my primary work, but I often find myself to coding some minor programs (e.g. scripts) in Python because I found it to be the best tool for that type of task. For example: An analyst gives me a complex CSV file to populate some DB tables, so I would use Python to parse it and create a DB script. What's the problem? The main problem I see is that a few parts of these quick & dirty scripts are slowly gaining importance and: My company does not support Python They're not version controlled (I back them up in another way) My coworkers do not know Python The analysts have even started referencing them in email ("launch the script that exports..."), so they are needed more often than I initially thought. I should add that these scripts are just utilities that are not part of the main project; they simply help to get trivial tasks done in less time. For my own small tasks they help a lot. In short, if I were a lottery winner to be in a accident, my coworkers would need to keep the project alive without those scripts; they would spend more time in fixing CSV errors by hand for example. Is this a common scenario? Am I doing something wrong? What should I do?
