In a new article, now up on otn/java, titled “New JavaServer Faces 2.2 Feature: The viewAction Component,” Tom McGinn, Oracle’s Principal Curriculum Developer for Oracle Server Technologies, explores the advantages offered by the JavaServer Faces 2.2 view action feature, which, according to McGinn, “simplifies the process for performing conditional checks on initial and postback requests, enables control over which phase of the lifecycle an action is performed in, and enables both implicit and declarative navigation.”As McGinn observes: “A view action operates like a button command (UICommand) component. By default, it is executed during the Invoke Application phase in response to an initial request.   Kb. 1 éve, június elején kezdtem a blogot írni. Az elmúlt egy év alatt 3395 egyedi látogatója volt a blognak, a látogatók alkalmanként átlagosan 59 másodpercet töltöttek el itt. Azt is el kell ismerni, hogy elég nagy a visszafordulási arány (83,5%), azaz az idetévedok kevesebb mint ötöde találja hasznosnak a tartalmat. Ennek persze lehet egy fontos oka, hogy az IT kifejezésekre keresések miatt külföldiek számára is feljön a keresokben a blogom, így csak megnyitva a blogot észlelik, hogy nem értenek magyarul :-). Jól mutatja az alábbi térkép is, hogy a világ számos pontjáról idetalálnak (van aki egyébként használ valami webes fordító megoldást a nyelvi akadály leküzdésére), de az is látszik hogy a célközönséget is sikerül elérni, azaz a látogatók zöme Magyarországról érkezik (3505 látogatás az összes 5082-bol). Érdekes, hogy a legtöbb látogató a "vb tippjáték" (110 látogató) kifejezésre talált ide, ezt követi az "oracle junior képzés" (42), majd a "kyte" (40) (nem biztos hogy Tom Kyte-ra gondoltak :-)). Csupán a 4. helyen áll az elso igazi IT keresés: "oracle workflow" (37), majd "oracle enterprise manager" (33). A napi csúcslátogatást (76) is a vb tippjátékra keresoknek köszönheti a blog... Az 1. születésnap örömére próbáltam valami újítást csinálni. A fejléc alatt látható új menüsorba próbálom összeszedni azokat a hasznos oldalakat, amelyek kapcsolódnak a blog témájához, ám esetleg nem annyira egyszeru rátalálni a weben. Tervezem még ezt tovább bovíteni, esetleg egy külön oldalt is létrehozni erre a célra a blog mögött. Remélem ezzel segítem a blog olvasók munkáját.

• A quick hello to the Western Kentucky .NET User Group

  A few days back, I got a chance to speak at the Western Kentucky .NET User Group meeting in Murray, Kentucky.  The opportunity came up because the original speaker, Jeff Blankenburg, had another obligation and was thus unable to come to this meeting.  I volunteered to deliver his presentation, which is an overview of MIX10 conference. It was a great experience for me; got to drive around and do a little bit of sight-seeing – can’t say I’ve ever been to Kentucky before, so first trip ever there.  I got to meet the user group’s current lead, Tom Turner and got to chat and discuss about all kinds of stuff with the other members.  Cheers to Matt Gawarecki and Brandon Sharp! The presentation itself mostly covers new features in Visual Studio 2010, which was recently released on April 12 – got to demonstrate Historical Debugging in IntelliTrace, Parallel Stacks, View Call Hierarchy and show some Extensions.  We also covered some of the new functionalities in Silverlight 4 (using webcams, drag & drop support among others) and I got to show off Scott Guthrie’s Windows Phone 7 Twitter app.  Altogether, it was quite a bit to cover in 70 minutes or so, but I think everyone enjoyed it. Jeff provided me with the presentation slides (which I modify a bit) and demo applications; so I’m putting it up here for those that may be interested in downloading them.  Please keep in mind that all the demos were made with VS2010 RC, so there may be slight tweaks to get it to work on the RTM version.

• set up re-direct for lan clients to local t&c page

  Hi, I'm trying to set up something on my network so that when users connect and try and use the internet they are re-directed to a locally-hosted terms and conditions and policy page. Once they click "accept" then they will be passed through to their homepage, otherwise if they decline then the window will close or show them an error message. I've spent a while looking into this and am wondering if it's possible to do witout having to setup/add to a firewall. Otheriwse let me know what my options are and I can pass it on. Many Thanks Tom

• Google Chrome 4.0.249.89 not working

  Good day to you, I am running Google Chrome 4.0.249.89 and noticed a weird behavior with it. It loads but I get this error, notice there is an absent of commonly used pages in the display itself and displays the message. Upon closer inspection within the directory which I've captured here on pastebin.com Has google chrome ceased to function after a certain limit...? I have tried the setup --rename-chrome-exe trick which did not work...I just don't want to lose my bookmarks... Thanks for your help, Best regards, Tom.

• Hosting a web site at home: ISP Blocking port 80?

  Hello, I presume this is a better place to put this rather than server fault. I'm interested in setting up a small site to host at home as a "proof of concept" exercise, i.e. to prrove that I know how to do it. I've got a (virtual) server 2003 machine with a site on it, all configured with port forwarding through to 80 on my server. I have a Belkin F5D7634 which I have put my DYNDNS details in but when I try to go to my DYNDNS address it comes up with the page cannot be displayed. My ISP is Carphone Warehouse/AOL and I've been unable to find any information if they block port 80. If they do, can anybody reccomend a home provider that does not block port 80? Regards, Tom.

• WordPress - Open Link in New Windows Default

  Hey SuperUsers, is it possible to make some sort of change or add a plugin that allows me to make every 'external' link open in a new window? Just an example: if my blog was called http//timmy.com/ and I wanted to link to http//tom.com/, it would open a new window instead of the same window, but I wanted to link from http//timmy.com/ to http//timmy.com/somewhere/ in the same window. So I want all external link from my website to another in a new window/tab, but I want every internal link, from my website to somewhere else on my website, to be in the same window/tab. Is this possible?

• Would Apple be able to tell if I'm running Mac OS inside a VM?

  Just as the question/title says. I understand that running Mac OS inside of a VM is against the EULA for the consumer version (but not the server, which is much more expensive!) If I were to purchase a legal copy of Mac OS, and install it to a VM, then register as an Apple Developer, would they shut me out? Is there a way they can tell the difference between emulated hardware and Apple computers? I'm slightly unfamiliar with how all of Apple's software works. Windows goes through this "genuine" test whenever installing service packs, but I don't know if Mac goes through the same trouble. Many thanks, -Tom

• Oracle as a Service in the Cloud

  This should really be a Tweet, but I guess I'm writing a bit more. In theme of data migration and legacy modernization, I am seeing more and more of a push to consolidate data sources, especially from non-oracle to oracle in an effort to save dollars. From a modernization perspective, this fits in quite well. We are able to migrate things like Terradata, Sybase and DB2 and put that all into an Oracle database and then provide that as a OaaS (Oracle as a Service) Cloud offering. This seems to be a growing trend, and not unlike the cool RDS Amazon Database cloud being built on Oracle as well. We again find ourselves back in the similar theme of migration, however. The target technology sounds like a winner (COBOL to Java/SOA...DB2/Datacom/Adabas to Oracle) but the age-old problem of how to get there still persists. It it not trivial to migrate large amounts of pre-relational or "devolved" relational data. To do this, we again must revert back to a tight roadmap to migration and leverage the growing tools and services that we have. I'm working on a couple of new sections and chapters for a book that Tom and Prakash and I are writing around Database Migration and Consolidation. I'll share some snipits shortly.

• SQL language drawbacks, The Third Manifesto

  Sometime ago I read about SQL language drawbacks (the basic language specification, not vendor specific), and one of the drawbacks was that the language does not allow to create a set of tuples that don't come from a table. For instance, SELECT firstName, lastName from people; this creates a set of tuples coming from the table people. Now, if I don't have this table people, and I want to return a constant, I'd need something like this to return a set of two tuples (this would not require to have a table): SELECT VALUES('james', 'dean'), ('tom', 'cruisse'); Why I would need that? Because of the same reasons that we can define constants (not only basic types, but objects and arrays also) in any advanced programming language. Workarounds, Yes, I could create a temporal table, fill the data, and SELECT from that table. This is a hack, to overcome the drawbacks of the poor SQL language. I think that I read about this somewhere in "The Third Manifesto", but I don't find the paragraph/example talking about this concrete drawback anymore. Do you know a reference about it?

  OK I've read tons of fourms of people getting the onboard RTL8192SE working and the RTL8192SU working dif is U = USB they are both N and i have both Toshiba L500D-00T pre-installed Win Vistax64-HP and i have obtained the free Win7x64-HP upgrade the onboard wificard sucks and can't hold a stable connection for more then 20minutes in windows but the usb is amazing. Now problem is i tried both Ubuntu and Mandriva with no resolve the issue is the onboard drive detects and actually SHOWS that it's there but no wireless networks detect so it's saying no SSID's are broadcasting which i know is a lie since I'm running a 2wire bell dsl modem with built in wifi and a Linksys wrt54g w/ DD-WRT firmware and both are broadcasting fine. Why don't i use the USB? In the hardware device manager in mandriva it shows up as unknown but shows that it's realtek and that it's a 8192 chipset. but no option to for a driver install and when i do a make in terminal i get this error and no clue what it means [root@John-PC rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit]# make make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-desktop-3mnb/build: No such file or directory. • Is there an high quality natural text reader for the mac?

  I'm reading about 150 pages of text on screen, every day. I will have to read about 15.000 in the next upcoming months. No joke. Well, the problem is this: I suffer from a sort of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder which forces me to read every sentence up to 10 times until I really get it. Mac OS X Snow Leopard has a built-in text reader with the name "Alex". Although it is already pretty good quality, I know there are far better natural sounding voices out there. I have heard already voices that are absolutely amazing compared to Alex. They're so good, that you can't tell anymore the difference between a real person or a computer. Alex still has this "metal factor" in its voice, which makes my ears hurt after 8 hours of listening. The next problem with Alex is, that he never makes a break after a sentence. Also, it's not possible to think about a sentence and then continue reading. It's also not possible to have him repeat a sentence, without tedious text selection and shortcut usage. Actually, the best tool I can imagine would have the option to read a sentence and move on to the next one after pressing a special key, OR repeating the previously one after pressing a special key. That would help so much! And if that's even with one of those bell lab / AT&T / whatever super-natural voices, even better! But it would be already a great relief if there was just a better tool to control Alex. To let him make breaks after sentences or let him speak big chunks of text sentence-by-sentence with fine-grained control over repetition and moving on. Is there anything?

• Sharing files between 2 different routers

  I realize this has been asked before and I have read as much as I could find on the topic but I still need help with this because there are so many different approaches and the ones I am trying aren't working. So I have 2 routers, lets call them A and B. Both have a wireless feature and are active. A is in the basement and receives the internet. There is a TV on the ground floor that is connected to A through an ethernet wire. B is upstairs and gets the internet from A through an ethernet wire. Connected to B, is a desktop running Plex Media Server. What I want to do is make sure devices connected to both routes can access the Plex Media Server. So what I have read is that I should plug in the ethernet wire connecting B to a into a LAN port instead of the WAN port. After that I should turn off DHCP. I have tried this and B stops receiving internet. What am I doing wrong? Another thing I have read is to use Router B in bridge mode but Router B is running openwrt and I have QoS on it so gaming/VoIP/browsing is unaffected by heavy downloading/uploading. I would prefer to keep this active. I realize it might be ineffective if a device in Router A is doing some hardcore downloading but all that stuff is done on Router B anyway so it doesn't matter. Router A can't get openwrt because it is a shitty one provided by Bell. So, how do I proceed with this?

• Some HTTPS connections via NAT fail, but work on firewall itself.

  Hi, I am having trouble establishing some HTTPS connections from internal machines, even though these same connections work if initiated on the firewall itself. The firewall machine is running Ubuntu 10.04.1 and shorewall 4.4.6. The internet connection is Bell PPPoE DSL (in Canada). I have tried various MTU settings, it doesn't seem to make any difference. Other protocols (HTTP, FTP, etc) generally work. • [tcpdump] Proxy delegate refusing connexion ?

  Hi guys, I'm a little disapointed ! My aim was to build a VERY simple smtp proxy under debian to handle mail from a port (51234) and forward it to the standard 25 port. I compile and install a "delegate" witch can handle easily that. It's working very well like that : delegated SERVER="smtp://anotherSmtpServer:25" -P51234 The strange thing is, it's working on my virtual test machine and on the dedicated server in local but I can't manage to use it trought internet.
