• Interconnect nodes in a Java distributed infrastructure for tweet processing

- by David Moreno García
I'm working in a new version of an old project that I used to download and process user statuses from Twitter. The main problem of that project was its infrastructure. I used multiple instances of a java application (trackers) to download from Twitter given an specific task (basically terms to search for), connected with a central node (a web application) that had to process all tweets once per day and generate a new task for each trackers once each 15 minutes. The central node also had to monitor all trackers and enable/disable them under user petition. This, as I said, was too slow because I had multiple bottlenecks, so in this new version I want to improve the infrastructure and isolate all functionalities in specific nodes. I also need a good notification system to receive notifications for any node. So, in the next diagram I show the components that I'll need in this new version: As you can see, there are more nodes. Here are some notes about them: Dashboard: Controls trackers statuses and send a single task to each of them (under user request). The trackers will use this task until replaced with a new one (if done, not each 15 minutes like before). Search engine: I need to store all the tweets. They are firstly stored in a local database for each tracker but after that I'm thinking on using something like Elasticsearch to be able to do fast searches. Tweet processor: Just and isolated component with its own database (maybe something like the search engine to have fast access to info generated by the module). In the future more could be added. Application UI: A web application with a shared database with the Dashboard (mainly to store users information and preferences). Indeed, both could be merged into a single web. The main difference with the previous version of the project is that now they will be isolated and they will only show information and send requests. I will not do any heavy task in them (like process tweets as I did before). So, having this components, my main headache is how to structure all to not have to rewrite a lot of code every time I need to access any new data. Another headache is how can I interconnect nodes. I could use sockets but that is a pain in the ass. Maybe a REST layer? And finally, if all the nodes are isolated, how could I generate notifications for each user which info is only in the database used by the Application UI? I'm programming this using Java and Spring (at least I used them in the last version) but I have no problems with changing the language if I can take advantage of a tool/library/engine to make my life easier and have a better platform. Any comment will be appreciated.

• Make the Taskbar Buttons Switch to the Last Active Window in Windows 7

- by The Geek
The new Windows 7 taskbar’s Aero Peek feature, with the live thumbnails of every window, is awesome… but sometimes you just want to be able to click the taskbar button and have the last open window show up instead. Here’s a quick hack to make it work better. To better understand the problem, imagine having nine windows of the same type open on your screen, but you are primarily working in just one of the windows at a time. So every time you want to switch back, you have to click the taskbar button, and then choose the one you are using from the list, which can be pretty annoying… Now if you know your Windows 7 shortcuts, you’d know that you can simply hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on the taskbar button, and the last window will show up. In fact, you can keep holding down the Ctrl key and keep clicking, and Windows will cycle through the open windows. It’s a useful shortcut, but hardly something you want to do every single time. Instead, we’ll use a quick registry hack to make the normal click switch to the last open window—if you still want to see the thumbnail list, just hover your mouse over the button for half a second to see the full list. Manual Registry Hack for Last Active Window Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then head down to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced Once you’re there, create a new 32-bit DWORD value on the right hand side, give it the name LastActiveClick, and set the value to 1. Once you are done, it should look something like this: Once you are done, you’ll have to log off and back on, or you can kill Explorer.exe through Task Manager and re-open it. Download the Registry Hack Instead Since you probably don’t feel like registry hacking, we’ve provided you an easy downloadable version. You can simply download the file, extract it, and then double-click on the LastActiveClick.reg file. Once you are done, you’ll have to log off and back on, just like with the manual registry hack. • What are the algorithms that are used for working with large data in popular web applications

- by Moss Farmer
I am looking for some well known algorithms that can be considered while handling very large amount of data.(Edit- By large amount of data I refer to records in a database excluding blobs). These algorithms if not in totality but in parts may be used in big web applications like Twitter, Last.fm , Amazon ,etc. Specifically, I'm looking for names or links to such algorithms. My primary interest lies in developing a very deep understanding on working with large database records and writing efficient code for working with the same.

- by AaronBertrand
This month, T-SQL Tuesday is being hosted by freshly minted MVP Jen McCown ( blog | twitter ), and her topic is " Resolutions! " I already gave a rough sort of overview on my goals for 2011 , but I thought I would be able to dig a little deeper with enough relevance to participate. • A little on speaking and evaluations...

- by AaronBertrand
Buck Woody ( blog | twitter ) just published a great post on session evaluations , and a lot of his points hit home for me. The premise is that the evaluations are not really meant for the attendee or the event organizers, but so that the speaker can get better and make the next session better. In light of this, at least in my opinion, the existing evaluation forms (and the way attendees tend to fill them out) do not achieve this at all. It may be a little more work for events to generate a more...(read more)

• Social media and special characters

- by John Paul Cook
I’ve previously blogged about using Unicode with T-SQL to put superscripts, subscripts, and special characters into text strings. Unicode is also useful in formatting social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and that dinosaur otherwise known as email. When you can’t set properties of text such as italicizing the subject line of an email message or adding subscripts to a Facebook post, Unicode can make it possible. There are Unicode characters that are intrinsically italicized. Others are intrinsically...(read more)

• How come Indiegogo links shared on G+ link to their page instead of displaying URL?

- by Ivan Vucica
If an Indiegogo link, such as this one, gets shared on G+, their G+ page is displayed in the post in the place where commonly the URL would be displayed. I've tried looking analyzing the HTML, but came up empty handed: there's Twitter cards metadata, there's OpenGraph, there is a G+ button -- but I found nothing that links to Indiegogo's page, not even rel="publisher". So, how does Indiegogo achieve this?

• Optimizing perceived load time for social sharing widgets on a page?

- by Lucka
I have placed the facebook "like" and some other social bookmarking websites link on my blog, such as Google Buzz, Digg, Twitter, etc. I just noticed that it takes a while to load my blog page as it need to load the data from the social networking sites (such as number of likes etc). How can I place the links efficiently so that first my blog content loads, and meanwhile it loads data from these websites -- in other words, these sharing widgets should not hang my blog page while waiting for data from external sites?

• Capturing index operations using a DDL trigger

- by AaronBertrand
Today on twitter the following question came up on the #sqlhelp hash tag, from DaveH0ward : Is there a DMV that can tell me the last time an index was rebuilt? SQL 2008 My initial response: I don't believe so, you'd have to be monitoring for that ... perhaps a DDL trigger capturing ALTER_INDEX? Then I remembered that the default trace in SQL Server ( as long as it is enabled ) will capture these events. My follow-up response: You can get it from the default trace, blog post forthcoming So here is...(read more)

• MOSSLover Lives On…

- by MOSSLover
A while back, maybe 6 months, I got some bad news about 2010. Microsoft was removing Office from the MOSS equivalent of 2010, so basically my alias would be obsolete the second 2010 caught on in the community. I thought about it for some time. I had some discussions with friends in the community. I even noticed that the MOSSMan changed his twitter id. I started my blog around a WSS 3.0 project when I worked for LRS in there St. Louis Office in February/March 2007. So I think it’s fitting to keep the name, because my community involvement centers around 2007. My first ever speaking ordeal was at the Kansas City Office Geeks meeting in November of 2007 on Disaster Recovery where about three people attended. The first user group meeting I ever attended was around the month of June 2007 at the KC .Net User Group about two weeks after my braces were installed. It’s definitely fitting to say that 2007 paved the way for everything that happened in the past 2/2 1/2 years. If anyone asks what MOSSLover means I added a description on twitter and I also added my name. I added my name for other reasons, because I’m sick of people thinking I am the guy in the photo. Also, I’d like people to recognize me for who I am. Everyone should expect less of the hat in the upcoming year and more of my hair. I’ve taken a vow to wear the hat less and less this year. I am sick of buying hats, plus I want to move forward to gain more self confidence. The hat does not really help. I will still wear a t-shirt and jeans in most of my presentations. That is who I am and it will not change any time soon. If you expect to see me in a skirt good luck with that as it won’t be happening unless I am forced at gun point. I hope you guys have a good weekend. Later all… Technorati Tags: MOSSLover,Cardinal's Hat,Becky Isserman
