• Windows shuts down unexpectedly when waking up from sleep

  I've been facing this issue since yesterday, whenever I put the computer into sleep mode and when I wake up, it takes me to boot menu with choices; start Windows normally, safe mode, etc. in short, it shuts down unexpectedly while waking up. I have my laptop dual booted with up-to-date Windows 7 SP1 (32-bit) and Ubuntu 10.10. This problem is not happening with Ubuntu. I googled the issue and went through this, this and this page. But, none of the threads were helpful to solve it. I've found that there's something to do with device drivers. What can be done to resolve the issue? Can SFC utility solve it if it is due to corrupt system files?

• HOWTO run Wordpress site along with Tomcat web aplication on the same server

  I am building a solution where the CMS part of the site (i.e. About US, Contact etc) will be run on Wordpress & the private pages will be a Java-Servlet based stack run on Tomcat 7. Both of these "apps" have to run on the same server for budget reasons, at least for now. What I want to know how to make this happen (via configurations, setups etc)? So that whenever users come to public pages they will be served content from Wordpress but for private pages (here I am assuming there will be a URL pattern differentiating this) then it will be served by Tomcat I am assuming here that I will be using Apache as the server for fronting the wordpress requests. Also it is an Ubuntu 12.04 server.

• HAProxy with 'backup' failure

  I have a simple configuration of 2 MySQL being load balanced by HAProxy. For an unfortunate reason I need to use them in Passive\Active mode. So I thought I'd configure one DB as 'backup' and go to sleep. But I was wrong. Whenever I add the 'backup' to the server line HAProxy throws a communication link error (essentially saying 'no DB available" (with the 'backup' it works great). It just doesnt consider that server as a valid option any more... I have tried this configuration: listen mysql 10.0.0.109:3307 mode tcp balance roundrobin option httpchk server db01 10.0.0.236:3306 server db02 10.0.0.68:3306 backup and also this configuration: frontend mysql_proxy bind 10.0.0.109:3307 default_backend mysql backend mysql mode tcp balance roundrobin option httpchk server db01 10.0.0.236:3306 server db02 10.0.0.68:3306 backup Nothing worked! • MacBook makes a noise from the power adapter every time I flip a widget...

  OK this is bizarre. But basically, what happens is on my MacBook (latest model) whenever I 'flip' a Dashboard Widget I hear a little noise for the duration of the flip: like a tiny continuous squeak noise. It's quite strange. However, it only ever happens when the MagSafe cable is plugged in. WHY?! :'( The noise appears to me emitted from the MagSafe area itself, but, there's not any other CoreAnimation or Quartzey bits that cause this to happen, it only happens with Dashboard widgets... The noise is very quiet and you can only hear it in a silent room. Edit: Running the latest Snow Leopard.

• Apache 2.0.55/PHP 5.3.5 Hangs

  Recently inherited a Windows 2k3 server running XAMPP, including ancient copies of PHP, MySQL and Apache. I'm attempting to install a second, up-to-date PHP installation on the machine so I can reference that in future instead of XAMPP's old one. Apache starts up with this new PHP installation happily. Unfortunately, when Apache references the new PHP install, whenever I try a view a page (even a non-PHP page) it hangs. The server simply doesn't respond to any HTTP request - it doesn't crash either. It just sits there with the connection open. There are no errors/warnings/notices in either the PHP or Apache logs. I've pretty much ruled out PHP's extensions (by process of systematic elimination) and most of the INI settings. I've tried reinstalling PHP from scratch. The PHP installation is PHP 5.3.5 x86 thread-safe compiled w/ VC6. The Apache installation is Apache 2.0.55. Anyone encountered similar behaviour?

• How can I disable the automatic switch to "library" mode in Windows 7's Media Player 12?

  Whenever I plug any USB device into my computer while running Windows Media Player 12 in Windows 7, it will automatically swtich the player from the Now Playing mode to Library mode. This is intended to faciliate syncing between Media Player and MP3 players, but it happens for any USB device. I'd like this to not happen since it's infuriating to see this take place while I'm watching something on a separate screen in Media Player just from plugging in a USB key. This has nothing to do with Windows autorun, and nothing to do with versions of Windows pre-7. And no, switching to some other video player is not an option; I've tried them all, none are as good as stock Media Player in 7.

• Word 2007 cannot open old doc files anymore

  Since last week I am unable to open old doc files with Microsoft Word 2007. Whenever I try that I first get a warning about converters being a security issue. (I can disable that in the registry). After accepting (or disabling) this warning, however, I just get the following error message: Unglütiger Datentyp (Word 6.0/95 für Windows & Macintosh which means in English: Invalid document type (Word 6.0/95 for Windows & Macintosh I tried to goolge both the German and the translated error message but did not find anything related. The files in question can be opened by other users for the windows terminal server without problems.

  Yes, I've read and done the steps listed here with no results: Disable 'Save changes' dialog in Adobe Reader Basically what happens is with certain pdf documents, whenever I try to close them, it prompts me to save changes. This baffles me, as per their FAQ, Reader can't save anything, and I didn't make changes to the document in the first place. The one cause I could think of would be that the documents may not have been created with Adobe software, and as such may not write the pdfs in a way that makes Adobe happy.

• server shrinks html file to 0bytes on upload

  Hi there, I have come across a very unusual problem. I am working on a website at the moment and whenever I upload a file to the server, it becomes a 0kb file. I have changed ftp software to filezilla to see would this help and it hasn't. I have compared it to other sites I am working on the permissions are the same numbers 0644 but on the site that I am having the trouble with the permissions have the prefix- flcdmpe(0644). Would this be the problem and if so any ideas how to change it?, changing the permissions doesn't work. I have been onto the host company and they cannot figure it out at all. • Test ethernet port for data loss

  We are trying to test the ethernet phy on our linux box for data loss. As of now we just establish a tftp connection to a server to upload and download a file. Whenever a mismatch occurs, it is reported as failure. This is not a very nice test, as any mismatch might have been caused by the network itself and not a phy problem. Can you suggest a way to test the ethernet phy in a better way for data loss? Thanks...

• How to fix monitor detection on Windows 7?

  Hi, I'm using Windows 7 + Windows Media Center for my HTPC. It works great except from one annoying issue. Whenever I turn off my TV while listening the music, the music stop for a second or while Windows 7 tries to figure out what monitor is attached. After that second it settles down on a default 800x640. While not a big deal, it is annoying as I don't want to have the TV on while playing music. Is there anyway to fix the monitor/disable monitor auto-detection on Windows 7 so it would not start recalibrating everything when I turn off my TV? Thanks, Boaz

• NFS denies mount, even though the client is listed in exports

  We have a couple of servers (part of an HPC cluster) in which we're currently seeing some NFS behavior which is not making sense to me. node1 exports its /lscratch directory via NFS to node2, mounted at /scratch/node1. node2 also exports its own lscratch, which is correspondingly mounted at /scratch/node2 on node1. Unfortunately, whenever I attempt to mount either NFS export on the opposite node, I get the following error: mount: node1:/lscratch failed, reason given by server: Permission denied This despite the fact that I have included first the IP range (10.6.0.0) and then the specific IPs (10.6.7.1, 10.6.7.2) in /etc/exports. Any suggestions? Edit to remove ambiguity: I've made sure that exports only contains either the range, or the specific IPs, not both at the same time.

• How can I quickly change display settings from dual monitor to single monitor on laptop?

  I have my laptop (running Windows XP SP3) at work hooked up to an external monitor. Whenever I unplug the external monitor (time to go home!) I have to manually change the display settings. This takes time and involves a lot of clicks. Is there a way to automate changing these settings? I'm thinking of a hotkey solution or a little application that I can start with Launchy to toggle between two profiles. I use the MultiMon tool for "extending" the taskbar to the second monitor - will I have to give that up?

  I have two servers: Server A (CentOS), where people can upload files to (upload root is /files) Server B (Win 2008), with FileZilla FTP Server (FTP root is C:\content) I want that whenever a file is uploaded to Server A, to any subfolder under /files, the file is automatically copied to the exact same subfolder on Server B. Thus, if a user uploads "flowers.jpg" to /files/photos/12345/ then the file must be copied over FTP to C:\content\photos\12345 So far I have this bash script, it does copy the files to server B, but all files are placed in C:\content, and not in the corresponding subfolders. • A specific user is unable to log in to vsftpd

  I am setting up a new user let his name be ftpguy. He has access to only one directory /var/www/xxx. I have already chowned the directory so that he has write and read privileges. The user is also unable to login via ssh as I have disabled that by changing his shell to /sbin/nologin. Also, in vsftpd config, I have enabled the chroot_local_user. Now whenever I log in from ftp, i get an auth error. Connect socket #1008 to xxxxxxxx, port 21... 220 Welcome to blah FTP service. USER ftpguy 331 Please specify the password. PASS ********** 530 Login incorrect. I changed the password to something different several times, using the passwd command, nothing happens, i still the above error. However I am able to log in with my ssh creditals to my ftp server without any problems.(I do not use a key).

  I downloaded something and now, it is show this open file security warning. I have searched but I have only found how to disable security warnings globally. I only want to say NO forever to this warning, but it keeps showing up whenever Windows starts. The "Name" and "From" are: "C:/Users/MyUser/AppData/Local/Temp/Windows-Update.exe" I cannot even find that folder and file! I don't really know what was downloaded, I am helping someone else. (I am not a Windows user, so I am very lost here)

  I've got an ASUS G73JH, and whenever I suspend it or hibernate it, it will not wake up. The screen stays backlight but is black. I can't: Awaken it with the keyboard Awaken it with the mouse Soft power-off by pressing the power button I have to hold down the power button and shut it down that way, and this seems a little unreasonable. Is there a place I could look for more detail as to what's causing this? Is there a known quick-fix to this issue?

  Whenever I try to open a project in Visual Studio 2005 (Windows XP), my open project dialog become slow as molasses - navigating down one level of folders typically takes almost 60 seconds. Finding the project and opening it can take up 4-5 minutes, which is just ridiculous. I've checked the open project dialogs of other programs - only VS2005 is acting this way. What could be causing this problem and how do I go about solving it (apart from reinstalling VS2005 / windows) (Edit: Even VS2008 on the same machine does not have this problem.   I have this HUGELY irritating problem on Windows 7 (x64). Whenever I click on ANY link (that exists on a Word document, excel or Outlook), I get an alert box with the message: "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" I have been scouring my settings and the internet for a solution, but to no avail. Has anybody else encounted this problem? It even happens when I click anchors in word documents i.e. I can't even click on an entry in a Table of Contents to go to the appropriate page - I get this same error then. Is this a Windows 7 thing? Anyway to turn this off?

• One time torrent download

  I know about bittorrent but have never used it since it tends to be mostly used for illegal download of movies and software. Typically whenever I see a legitimate use for it (Linux distros) there is also a regular download option so I haven't had the need for a client until today. There is a large (500Mb) file I want to download that appears to only be accessible via bit torrent. For a one time use, is there an online resource that converts the torrent to a normal http no-special-client-software download? If not, what is an easy to use and light client to install/uninstall on WinXP for a one time use?

  I have a new 32" TV that I hooked up to the HDMI port on the back of my video card to use as a second monitor. I used an HDMI/DVI cable to hook it to the TV, and whenever I turn my TV off, XP disables the device tied to the TV so each time I want to use the TV as the monitor, I have to go into my display properties and enable it; it gets pretty annoying. How do I turn this 'feature' off? -- I have an NVidia card should it be specific to the nvidia control panel.

• Remove all HTTP bindings from an IIS 6 site while leaving SSL bindings

  We have a (remote, via a reseller) customer who configured their IIS6 server to not have any port 80 HTTP bindings, only port 443 SSL bindings. We would like to reproduce this without going through the three layers (!) to get to the customer to test some error scenerios. However, whenever I try to get IIS to not listen on IIS at all, I can't do it. If I do it in the UI, either leaving in the main properties page, or in the advanced bindings page, the UI does not let me proceed. If I remove the HTTP ServerBindings from the metabase.xml directly, IIS makes it port 80, all unassigned addresses anyway. Is there a way to get to the "SSL only" state naturally? Please note I am NOT talking about the "require SSL" checkbox or underlying metabase setting, as that still listens on port 80 (or whatever) to give the "SSL required" error message. I'm talking about not having any bindings listed at all for HTTP.

• Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid Server Minimal Install: Slow terminal scrolling

  I have a minimal install of Ubuntu 10.4 Server for testing and learning purposes. There is a very annoying occurrance: whenever I try to "man dpkg" or any command that load a few screens length of text (eg. "ls -al") the redraw speed of the console is just way too slow. I can see how each new line causes the whole screen to redraw. Note: that this doesn't happen inside X. No gui is installed. I have been experimenting with adding vesafb to the grub line as some guides suggested, but no speedups happened. You might be able to reproduce this behaviour on your linux system by switching to terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1. Is there any way to speed scrolling up?

• HDMI output issue in Ubuntu

  Hi, I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP notebook with a nVidia GT 130M graphics card. Whenever I connect a HDTV using the HDMI output and set all of the settings in the nVidia Control Panel, it will output to the HDTV, but cut off about 24 pixels on each side. Sometimes (but not often), it will work properly (display the entire screen), but I cannot get it to work thus consistently. I have tried using resolutions of 1920x1080, 1360x768, 800x600 with two HDTVs of different brands, with and without forcing full GPU scaling, with and without syncing to VBlank (what is this?), etc., and also using a Linux Mint 9 computer with integrated Intel (X4000-ish, don't remember exactly) graphics. The problem persists no matter what, but only with HDMI output (VGA works fine). The same computers works fine with HDTVs in Windows. Any ideas?
