• Copy files with filter (XP)

  I have a huge folder (over 6GB) with multiple sub-folders that I want to copy onto an external hard drive, however I do not want it to copy any PDF, EXE or ZIP files across to save space. Is there any software that will help me achieve this? I have looked at TeraCopy but this doesn't seem to have any filter mechanism on it. I am using Windows XP (* sigh *). *edit: found the xcopy command, will this do it? Can anyone help me with the syntax?

• Folders disappear every timeWindows XP starts up

  Whenever my Windows XP machine starts up, subfolders disappear from the first top-level folder, listed alphabetically (eg. from "C:\AA Backups"). The first time it happened I suspected user error (such as an unintentional delete or copy). But I then found it happens on every start-up, sometimes affecting huge numbers of files. Renaming the affected folder (eg to "ZZ Backups") just means that a different folder is affected the next time. Avast found no virus or malware that would seem to be responsible. The missing files are not visible to an undelete utility such as NTFSUndelete. Running "chkdsk/f" found no problems and did not fix the problem. File permissions also appear corrupted - a few files which should be accessible are missing "read" permission. What's happened to this machine?? Any ideas or reports of similar experiences would be most welcome.

• Is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Video Card Compatbile with a Mac Pro Running Windows 7 Pro 64?

  I have a Mac Pro (early 2008) and I'm running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) natively (i.e., with just Windows installed and no OSX or boot camp) on it. If I buy an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 video card, will it work or do I have to buy a card that is Mac-specific (e.g., GeForce GTX 285 'for Mac')? Also, more generally, will Windows video cards work on Intel Macs running Windows (in case I pick a cheaper card)? I can't tell if it matters that a Mac does not have a bios. I searched other boards and I gathered that video cards would work fine because Windows has the proper drivers for them and OSX doesn't and not having the BIOS doesn't make a difference. I found one thread on here that seemed to indicate that as well, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks.

• Power Outage Interrupted Upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate, Reverted to Vista, Now Vista is failing... What Next?

  I was in the midst of what seemed to be a successful upgrade from Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate when there was a brief blackout. The upgrade failed and Windows reverted back to Vista. Now Vista is very slow to boot, has problems waking back-up from inactivity and quickly loses it's wireless connection. The wake-up problem manifests itself as the mouse is clearly shown on a black screen but I have no access to the Desktop or Taskbar or Explorer. Even Alt-Ctrl-Delete doesn't seem to work. No task menu, no reboot. Hitting the reset button reboots the machine with the usual Black Screen warnings offering Safe Mode. I tried to do a system restore to a point before the upgrade. That didn't seem to work. My guess is that my system is a mutant with parts of Vista and parts of 7 crashing each other. I would like avoid a clean install if at all possible to avoid reinstalling other software. What should I try now? My thoughts are: My a system back-up to lock the computer in place Trying a second 7 upgrade If that appears to be working make another back-up If not reload back-up and try a repairing Vista from DVD. If that appears to work make another back-up, let system stablize about a week then try 7 install again If that doesn't work are there any other options to try before settling for a clean install? Another complication, I am doing this by "remote control". I'm traveling with my job and I'll be talking my son through it over the phone. (Kind of like the landing the 747 cliche from all the 70's adventure shows!) So is there a way of simplifying the steps? Thanks Ted

  When I click start, and then 'All Programs' (or select a sub menu of all programs) I get a grey menu which does not respond for about 5 seconds - after this it is ok. Any idea what is causing the menu to behave sluggishly? What can be done to fix this?   I have a 64-bit Windows XP machine which has hard crashed several times today. The symptoms are that the screen just goes blank, then the reboot cycle starts. There is no blue screen and even though it is switched on, no crash dump file is created. On all occasions it has happened during a period of high CPU/memory activity. I have run a full Dell diagnostics with no failures. Any ideas how to track this down further? Thanks.

• Using my System as the server- need advice

  We are deploying my web application in my system in jboss. And I am planning to use my system as the server as well. There are no html pages or jsp pages deployed. The client requests for resources and the server provides the resources in the form of objects. We are also using databases(Postgresql-15 tables) as the database server(this will also reside in my machine). My system configuration is Windows Vista, 2.3 GHZ, 4GB Ram, 32 bit. There can be many requests coming in at the same time. So is this configuration enough? Should we go with a different Operating System like Windows Server? I have never used Windows Server OS. How will it be different from other windows operating systems? Or if you feel please some other OS will be good in this situation, please suggest.

• Dual Boot Win8 and Win7 - Win 7 fails while booting

  Below are my dual boot settings. Both are on different partitions, default is Windows 8. Both were working fine. There are multiple users of this machine, few run 8 while few 7. All 7's users are novice and they use Internet only. I frequently update Windows 8 but not 7. Few weeks ago, Win 7 stopped booting. Machine gets restarted while booting with 7(Windows 7 start up glowing-Win-logo-screen does not appear) and the 8's loader reappears. • Downloading content greater than 2000 bytes from local network hangs in browser on Windows XP

  We have web application that runs under Tomcat in a local network. Our customers experience strange problem using this web application. Let's say Tomcat server runs on host1 and we open webapp URL in browser on host2. Any browser on host 2 starts opening page and downloading of content "hangs" for hours. We've made bunch of experiments and found that any content larger than 2000 bytes makes browser request hang. Tried in Internet Explorer 8, Opera 12, Firefox. At the same time if user opens website from internet, it works. Opening webapp from the same host1 where Tomcat is running works normally. Local network is organized with D-Link DGS-3120-48TC switch. Additional info. During experiments we've noticed XP Tweaker installed on hosts. • Infected Win XP disk not openable on a Vista computer

  How can I read a WinXP partioned disk that is infected and shows up on a USB connection to Win Vista computer as a single partition that Vista cannot see the contents? The XP computer HDD is partioned into 4 partitions. It became infected, and all attempts to clean it have failed. Applications begin to launch, but are then shut down by the infecting agent. Using a major Anti-virus Co. boot disk (which was unable to connect to the Web, probably because the infecting agent stopped it) with virus definitions dated after the disk became infected, the resultant scan showed no infection. I bought a USB cable to connect the IDE drive to my Vista computer, but when I open Win Explorer, it sees the disk, but does not show any contents. It indicates it is a single partition that is valid. However in all the ways I have tried it does not show drive contents. Any suggestions on what to do next?

  After I installed MS wireless keyboard and mouse and associated software, I started getting this annoying message titled "Hardware installation" telling me the software I am trying to install did not pass the XP logo tests. The software is for "HID non-user input data filter" and I have two options Continue anyway or stop installation. Now, if I try to continue the installation fails, if stop installing another message pops up with a little mouse logo and the whole process repeats itself. after I am done with that message a third dialog appears. This is happening every time I boot up my PC (a desktop), I tried following an advice I found in some forum and download windows update for ID non-user input data filter, but that installation failed as well. The thing is, that both keyboard and mouse are working fine Is there anyway to get past these dialogs ?

  Lately my Win XP SP3 started to make problems. From time to time it freezes completely. Which means that the system does not react to mouse and keyboard. Keyboard led indicators also do not react to CAPS-, SCROLL-, NUM- LOCK keys. The problem is that I don't understand what causes this behavior and it seems to happen randomly. System event log also does not contain any clues. I'm thinking this could be some driver/hardware problem, but I don't know which.   Hi there I feel so stupid, because I have to fix my dad computer(which was mine years ago). So it is an old computer on which I have installed windows xp and the drivers for main-board. The device manager says that I have no more problems with the hardware. That computer has to connect to a router from my room but it doesn't. On ping 192.168.2.1 I get "Request time out"., The other computers are connecting to that router. Only the old computer doesn't connect to the LAN and later to the internet. Also it doesn't get a good IP(from the same class). After running ipconfig command I know that i have an IP with 169.... What can I do? Do you have any tips for me?

  On the Intel site I'm struggling to find what the latest driver version is for certain chipsets. From a system info tool I have several PCs (laptops) with the following reported graphics: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family Intel(R) Q35 Express Chipset Family Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset All use the same driver igxprd32.dll at version 6.14.0010.4xxx (last 3 digits vary). All PCs are XP 32 bit. I am not certain but I think these are all using the same basic chipset. More than likely the drivers were never updated so I wondered what version might be relevant. Any help on tracking down the latest driver version (I just need the number, so I can see how out of date they are) and figuring out which chips these cards are would be great.

  When I tried to start my computer running Windows XP yesterday, as I turned on the screen it was stuck at the "Welcome" screen. I had to reset it. After that, I got stuck at the point where the BIOS should load the OS - I turn on the PC, the Motherboard and BIOS post message shows up, then the blinking "thing" in the top left corner shows up 2 seconds, then everything is black. • Installing ethernet controller driver after clean windows XP install

  I've been having trouble getting internet access through an ethernet connection since doing a fresh install of windows XP. It appears that I'm missing the driver for the ethernet controller. Looking in 'device manager' under the network adapters section there's an apparently working '1394 Net Adaptor' but under unknown devices there's the question-marked ethernet controller, which I believe is what I want the driver for. I found an old cd that contains the driver for it (Realtek 8139 or some 81xx). There's no setup tool, but only 3 files (a .cat file, .inf file and .sys file). I've tried right-clicking on the .inf file and using 'install' and also tried just copying the .sys file into the system32/drivers folder but neither have got me anywhere after restarting. The ethernet controller is still listed in 'unknown devices'. EDIT: I've also tried updating the driver in the device manager, pointing it at the folder containing the driver, but this hasn't worked either. Any ideas? Thanks

  On Windows XP I've made a copy of my home directory. Now I want to remove it, but there's a directory with two files which I can't get rid of: N:\COPY-OF-HOME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CardSpace The directory is read-only, and I can't change it (access denied). Cacls shows the following Everyone:(special access:) READ_CONTROL SYNCHRONIZE FILE_READ_ATTRIBUTES BUILTIN\Administrators:(special access:) READ_CONTROL SYNCHRONIZE FILE_GENERIC_READ FILE_READ_DATA FILE_READ_EA FILE_READ_ATTRIBUTES and I can't change it either. I do have the administrator privileges. For copying I didn't use any fancy tool, so I'd expect me to be the owner of the copy. Why can't I delete it? Do I need to boot Linux?

  I have a Dell 1525 which I reinstalled xp on recently due to a hard disk problem. Apparently I've missed something, it's taken to restarting for no apparent reason (I believe it's too frequent for windows updates which was my first thought). • How to make mouse in Windows 7 act the same as Windows XP

  In Windows XP using TweakUI I could enable an option so that when my mouse goes over an inactive window, it makes that window the active window. There is also another separate option so that if the window becomes active, it automatically becomes the topmost window. I like to enable the former but not the latter. For Windows 7 I have not been able to find the same thing. What I found instead is an option inside windows that does something similar. If I move my mouse over an inactive window, I have to hover over it for a while before it becomes active. It is not instantaneous. The second problem is that once it does become active, it automatically makes itself the topmost window, covering other things I don't want covered. In summary, this is what I want in Windows 7: When my mouse goes over an inactive window, it immediately makes it the active window. When it activates the window, it does not raise it above other windows.

I found the disk in the "disk management", I click "initialize" to init it, then creates a primary partition with size 950G, then select quick format to format the disk, the "disk management" will then complains: The disk configuration operation did not complete. Check the system event log for more information on the error. Verify the status of your storage devices before retrying. If that does not solve the problem, close the disk management console, then restart disk management or restart the computer. What could be the reason?

• Versioning files in Windows XP

  I would like to set up an archive folder in Windows XP that would allow me to drop several different versions of the same file, and have it store each version. I would envision this to work similar to the recycle bin, where you can drop the same file 10 times and it stores each version. Anybody know how I can do this? Thanks! Edit: Using a Version Control System is complete overkill for this situation. I may just write a script that appends a date/time stamp to the file when added to the folder.

• Windows XP doesn't like small subnets?

  This totally sounds like a bug to me, because my subnet mask and IP address should be valid by all accounts. My ISP has assigned me a fixed IP address of 65.110.7.20, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.252. Which sounds about right, because we're trying to set up a router with a /31 network - just 4 ip addresses. But when I try to set this IP and netmask up in Windows XP, I get the following error: "The combination of IP address and subnet mask are invalid. All of the bits in the host address portion of the IP address are set to 0." But they're not all set to 0. That would be a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255. Even then, that too is a valid subnet mask, consisting of a network of 1 IP address. Is there a way around this? A registry hack maybe?

  So, my kid's computer has Windows XP, with no disks. I'm pretty sure it has some viruses on the computer, of the type that don't seem to come out despite trying multiple anti-viral programs on it. I'm ready to just format it and start over again. I have a license sticker on the box, but no media to install it. I strongly suspect the license is OEM, but I don't have any proof. What suggestions would you have? I should say, the computer originally belonged to a business, is probably 6 years old, and I am willing to pay a small charge if required. I don't want to change the OS installed either.
