• Converting mp3 to ogg, suggestive?

  I'm thinking about converting my mp3 based music library to ogg, due to ogg being a free and open standard format (I guess there are other reasons too). As far as I know there's a chance of losing some sound quality when converting mp3 to ogg and vice versa (?). Would you suggest converting mp3 to ogg, or is it such a bad idea that I'd have to rip all CDs to ogg instead of converting? (if this would turn up I'd rip to flac anyway I guess). How would I be able to convert mp3 to ogg the easiest way, copying ID3-Tags too? (on a *nix-based environment) Best regards!

• Using 2-port LSI 2308-8e card to control 24 SAS HDDs

  I would like to rely on a RAID-on-chip solution to control 24 SAS hard drives in a direct-attached environment. How would you approach this to get best bandwidth given that I'd like to spend less than $10,000 on the interconnect. I've read that LSI 2308 chip can easily handle 8-drive SSD RAID6 in hardware. I'd like to harness its power to control 24 SAS hard drives over an expander in an external enclosure. Currently I use an Infortrend S24S-G2240 external enclosure. It provides its own controller and expander. I'd like to use LSI 2308 controller for RAID6 somehow instead of the mystery controller in the enclosure. P.S. I tried to create SAS-expander as a tag, but my rep on this site is low.

• Windows 7 complaint

  Let me start by saying that I love Windows 7. I think it's the best OS that Microsoft has put out in ages, possibly ever. However, I do have one little complaint. Actually it's not that little, it's become a real pain in the butt for me. I'm talking about Forced Updates. Yes, I know it's always been a problem and that Windows would occasionally force a reboot while you were away, in order to install some important update. That's not quite what I'm referring to. I mean the new "feature" where you don't have the choice to skip updates when shutting down. This isn't a big deal to those of you with desktop machines, but for those of us with laptops, it is rapidly becoming an unforgivable pain in the ass. Let me see if I can make myself a little clearer... If I am shutting down my LAPTOP, 99% of the time it's because I need to get up and go. Not wait around for FORCED UPDATES!! I travel a lot, and there are few things more annoying than shutting down to head to the airport, or shutting down so I can board my flight, or shutting down because we're about to land, etc... and having to wait 5-10 minutes while Win 7 does it's thing. It's damn inconvenient. There has to be a way you can detect if I'm on a laptop and give me the option to postpone updates, or skip them or (here's a thought) run them on startup instead of on shutdown. I'm usually not in a hurry when my machine is booting up, but if I'm powering down it's because I'm ready to GO! Please fix this. Windows 7 rocks in almost every other way I can think of.

  The first Bay Area JUG Roundup (#roundup10) convened at Oracle HQ on Wednesday evening, in the palatial surroundings of the Oracle Conference Center. (Yes, there will be more!) A couple hundred people were there, I'd say. More came out of this meetup than a bunch of new contacts and some mild indigestion (or even a mild hangover): - We (meaning, Oracle) announced the opening of the eight annual Duke's Choice Awards. As described on the Web page, "The awards celebrate extreme innovation in the world of Java technology and are granted to the best and most innovative projects using the Java platform." Entries will be accepted through July 1, with winners announced at JavaOne 2010. - Even more exciting, we offered a sneak preview of the Java Road Trip, a cross-country, 20-stop bus tour this Summer involving one rock-star bus, one full-time blogger/videographer, a whole bunch of Java demos and speakers, and lots of beer and prizes. Stay tuned for more info about this. - Sonya Barry, Java.net community manager, announced the beta.java.net project - which will be the end result of the java.net migration to a Kenai back-end and retooled social/community layer (already in progress). Sonya also announced that Maven support for Java.net projects is imminent, with just a contract to be signed in the next couple of weeks. • What amount of physical RAM would a typical "commodity class" server have, as of late 2013?

  I'm trying to spec out servers for my company's infrastructure group to build. They tell me anything more than 2GB is too much, which I find ridiculous considering cheap DRAM is about 15 bucks a dimm in bulk and our particular software runs better with more memory. I tried to find out how much google servers use, and pinning down a number is hard. Best I could find in a google research paper was that in 2008, their commodity servers were using 2 and 4GB dimms, but the paper never said how many. I realize "commodity server" is a vague term, but I'm just looking for a rough range in RAM used. I suspect at least 16GB is going to be the norm.

• A bounce-rate attack to manipulate SEO ?

  This is a question to experienced people that might help us shed some light on the issue. We noticed a very strange behavior on our site, in Google Analytics. Some dude from Finland, namely, from Kouvola city is hitting one of our pages - only one page on our site, 'bout a hundred times per day, all with an average bounce rate of 90%+... This is causing our overall bounce rate to go up by 1 to 3% per day... which is very disturbing.. since we're trying to do our best in order to keep it as low as possible. And obviously having it jumped from ~24% to 27%, just because of that crazy dude is not making us happy at all... We tried implementing a geo-targeted script in order to catch this particular visitor and deliver him a juicy message, and it seemed like it helped in the beginning, it has stopped for a day or two, but now he's back... The geo-targeted script was also logging all IP addresses for page requests originating from Finland in order to find out more details and (in order to block them on the server level, later).. but thing is, it was all mainly cable or DSL connections with various, but not constantly repeating IPs... we are all wondering what is he up to really ? I think that this page should be kept updated with ideas on how to combat this and perhaps someone could also shed light on what it might be ? What is the reason for doing this "bounce-rate attack", as I call it? I am looking for a ready-made Windows application to recurse a directory tree and .. at the very least, notify me of all files which contain non-ascii characters It would be nice if it would also do any of the following (in no particular order) Let me specify which file extensions to scan Show the file contents, with the non-ascii characters highlighted Automagically remove such characters, or ... • Packet logging on PIX firewall

  We have a Cisco PIX 515 firewall and I would like to set up a simple logging that would give us a traffic breakdown for billing by: source destination protocol port size time PIX is plugged into Catalyst 2970 and I was told that the best thing since sliced bread for logging is to get Netflow and get Catalyst to log. My concern, however, (besides the Netflow cost) is that I really don't want to "listen" to the internal noise and all I'm interested in are the external traffic stats above for billing and analysis purposes. What would be the simplest and the easiest solution? Cheers George

  Note:My question is not about Javascript. I'm developing a plugin for jQuery/Mootols/Prototype, that work with DOM. This plugin will be to improve page performance (better user experience). The plugin will be distributed to other developers so that they can use in their projects. How does the lazyload: The images are only loaded when you scroll down the page (will look like this: http://www.appelsiini.net/projects/lazyload/enabled_timeout.html LazyLoad). But he does not need HTML5, I refer to this attribute: data-src="image.jpg" Two good examples of website use LazyLoad are: youtube.com (suggested videos) and facebook.com (photo gallery). I believe that the best alternative would be to use: <A href="image.jpg">Content for ALT=""</a> and convert using javascript, for this: <IMG alt="Content for ALT=\"\"" src="image.jpg"> Then you question me: Why do you want to do that anyway? I'll tell you: Because HTML5 is not supported by any browser (especially mobile) And the attribute data-src="image.jpg" not work at all Indexers. I need a piece of HTML code to be fully accessible to search engines. Otherwise the plugin will not be something good for other developers. I thought about doing so to help in indexing: <noscript><img src="teste.jpg"></noscript> But noscript has negative effect on the index (I refer to the contents of noscript) I want a plugin that will not obstruct the image indexing in search engines. This plugin will be used by other developers (and me too). This is my question: How to make a HTML images accessible to search engines, which can minimize the requests?

• Microsoft Terminology: .NET C++ vs. traditional C++

  I've recently been working with a team that's using both .NET C++ and pre-.NET C++. I fully understand the technical differences between the two technologies. However, I sometimes feel like I'm floundering when it comes to the terminology used to differentiate the two. Example: Say we have two projects: ProjectA contains "C++" code that builds a .NET assembly DLL. ProjectB contains Visual C++ code that builds a traditional native Windows DLL. What is the best way to succinctly and terminologically draw a distinction between the two projects? Again, I'm not asking for an in-depth technical description of the differences between the two technologies. I'm just looking for names and labels. This is how, today, I might try to make the distinction when talking to someone: "ProjectA is a managed .NET C++ project" and "ProjectB is an unmanaged native C++ DLL project." However I am not at all certain that this terminology is ideal, or even correct. Please describe what you feel the ideal language to use in this situation (or similar situations) might be. Feel free to motivate your answer.

• korgac - init.d kill script on shutdown

  I'm new to Ubuntu 12.04 and Linux and my English is not the best, so I'm sorry for incorrect or stupid questions. I've installed KOrganizer and to start the reminder when I boot the system, I added the korgac command to the autostart. This works fine. But now, every time I want to reboot or shutdown my system, there appears a message that tells me that an unknown process is still running... so I have kill it manually before reboot/shutdown. I knew that it is the korgac process that causes this problem, so I decided to create an init.d script. I've created a script, put it into init.d, and created 2 symbolic links: to rc0.d and to rc6.d. The name starts with K10script... (I hope it is correct so). K10korgac_kill: #! /bin/sh pkill korgac exit 0 Unfortunately this wasn't able to resolve my problem. Maybe my script is wrong. • How can I create a custom OpenOffice / LibreOffice Writer table AutoFormat scheme?

  None of the basic table AutoFormat schemes in LibreOffice Writer have both an alternation style defined and no sum column/row style defined. If they have alternation, they always seem to have sums. Because of this I'd like to define my own table scheme. What is the easiest way to accomplish this? A WYSIWYG isn't totally necessary. I am not scared of editing simple XML files as long as I have examples to work from, and if I don't have to edit base install files. If I can place them in a custom area or my user profile directory then that would be best. If there is a way to get the GUI Add functionality to properly recognize an alternation then that would also be helpful.

• Tips on Managing Podcast Subscriptions

  I listen to a silly number of technical podcasts. I listen to enough of them that it is literally impossible to keep up. I nearly gave up and started dropping feeds from my subscription list when I heard Craig Shoemaker talk about his Polymorphic Podcast fast feed. The idea is he provides the same content at a higher speed so you can listen to his complete show in 3/4th the time. I tried it out with his recent jQuery Secrets with Dave Ward interview and I was shocked with the feed quality. It was a super clear, understandable conversation which only took a fraction of the time commitment. I experimented a bit and played the normal recording at 2x speed on my iPhone and the quality was once again just fine. But now I'm saving half of the time. I'm curious as to how you might manage your podcast subscriptions. Can you offer any tips or advice on how to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to technical podcast listening?

• Low-level GPU code and Shader Compilation

  Bear with me, because I will raise several questions at once. I still feel, though, that overall this can be treated as one question that may be answered succinctly. I recently dove into solidifying my understanding of the assembly language, low-level memory operations, CPU structure, and program optimizations. This also sparked my interest in how higher-level shading languages, GLSL and HLSL in particular, are compiled and optimized, as well as what formats they are reduced to before machine code is generated (assuming they are not converted directly into machine code). After a bit of research into this, the best resource I've found is this presentation from ATI about the compilation of and optimizations for HLSL. I also found sample ARB assembly code. This sort of addressed my original curiosity, but it raised several other questions. The assembler code in the ATI presentation seems like it contains instructions specifically targeted for the GPU, but is this merely a hypothetical example created for the purpose of conceptual understanding, or is this code really generated during shader compilation? If so, is it possible to inspect it, or even write it in place of the higher-level syntax? My initial searches for an answer to the last question tell me that this may be disallowed, but I have not dug too deep yet. Also, along the same lines, are GLSL shader programs compiled into ARB assembly code before machine code is generated, and is it possible to write direct ARB assembly? Lastly, and perhaps what I am most interested in finding out: are there comprehensive resources on shader compilation and low-level GPU code? I have been unable to find any thus far. I ask simply because I am curious :)

• Warnings When Undo Isn't Possible

  Enjoyed this post Never Use a Warning When you Mean Undo by Aza Raskin. It makes sense never to warn users if an undo option is possible. The examples given are from the web space. Here's the conclusion: Warnings cause us to lose our work, to mistrust our computers, and to blame ourselves. A simple but foolproof design methodology solves the problem: "Never use a warning when you mean undo." And when a user is deleting their work, you always mean undo. However, in enterprise apps you may find that an undo option isn't technically possible or desirable. Objects may be shared, part of a flow elsewhere, or undoing something committed to the database (a rollback I guess) may not be feasible if it becomes locked by another process. Plus, what constitutes user ownership of objects isn't always clear to users. The implications of delete (and other) actions need to be clearly communicated out in advance. Really, warnings are important in the enterprise space. Data has a very high value, and users can perform a wide variety of actions that may risk that data, not always within the application itself (at browser level, for example). That said, throwing warnings all over the place when an undo option is possible is annoying. Instead, treat warnings with respect. When there is no undo option possible, use warning messages to communicate potentially dangerous or irrecoverable actions or the downstream consequences of user actions on the process or task flow. Force the user to respond to a warning message by using a modal dialog with clearly labeled action buttons. Here's a couple of examples. A great article that got me thinking. Let's see more like that. Let's not forget there's more types of messages than just error messages. User assistance and user experience professionals need to understand when best to use confirmation, information, and warning types too!

• Sync Gmail, Google Contacts, Google Calendar with Microsoft Exchange

  At my work we only use Microsoft Exchange. As I hate Outlook and much prefer Google's services, I'd like to be able to sync my email, calendar, and contacts to a Gmail account. It looks like Google shut down their Google Sync service for Gmail accounts earlier this year: http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2716936. They are recommending IMAP, CalDAV, and CardDAV. I'm having trouble even setting up IMAP to work with Exchange. Is this the best way to go or is there a better solution?

• Windows 2008 R2 software RAID 1 (disk failure)

  I've bought myself a new server that I'm going to use for some various software developing projects. I have a simple question about Windows 2008 R2 x64 software raid. What if disk 1 fails? Will it automatically swap over to disk 2? And boot up on disk 2 after reboot? Or how do you handle this? Should I use some tools for monitoring my RAID 1? So if it fails or if there are any errors, I will receive an email. Do you know of a tool capable of this? Or can I do it by having a tool monitoring the event viewer? Finally, I'm looking for a tool to test the speed (read/write) of my harddrives, before and after introducing RAID 1. What's the best free tool out there?

• Rip authedicatation from LDAP to Local

  We are taking a small portion of out network offline, and running a separate network using that portion. (By small portion I mean 2 servers, that will be connected to 30 odd boxs that aren't usually part of our network, and don't need to authenicate) I intend to create a VM on one of the servers to provide general user services, and IRC server, remote shell etc. And I would like the users to be able to use there usual server log in details. Problem is the LDAP server that normally checks those details is not one of the severs. So I need to be able to some how take their details off LDAP and put them on the the server that is coming. One suggestion I had was to set a LDAP server on the VM locally, and clone the LDAP database onto it (using something called slapcat) is this the best way? Or can I I change the LDAP data into local authentication data?
