• SQL - How can I apply a "semi-unique" constraint?

  Hi, I have a (simplified) table consisting of three columns: id INT PRIMARY KEY NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, foreignID INT NOT NULL, name VARCHAR NOT NULL Basically, I would like to add a constraint (at the database level rather than at the application level) where it only possible for one unique 'name' to exist per foreignID. For example, given the data (id, foreignid, name): 1,1,Name1 2,1,Name2 3,1,Name3 4,2,Name1 5,2,Name2 I want the constraint to fail if the user tries to insert another 'Name3' under foreignId 1, but succeed if the user tries to insert 'Name3' under foreignId 2. For this reason I cannot simply make the whole column UNIQUE. I am having difficulty coming up with a SQL expression to achieve this, can anybody help me? Thanks

  Hi guys, I'm looking for a way to do this ... SELECT FirstName, LastName, Split(AddressBlock, ' ', 1), Split(AddressBlock, ' ', 2), PostCode FROM Contacts The arguments I want to pass are ... The address The separator (current situation requires 2 spaces but this might be a comma or a space followed by a comma) or something else (it varies). The address part I want to return (i don't always need all parts of the split result). I seem to be able to find a few examples of splitting functions about the internet but they return a table containing the entire set of split parts. My SQL skills aren't that great so I need the answer to be ultra simple. I'm always working with nvarchar data and the function needs to be reusable.

  Hey Guys .. I am new to programming in Objective C . I checked many tutorials on reading data in sqlite3 , but almost all of them have show the data in UITableView . I have a page where the user types in the password, the password lets say 1234 is saved in the database ( I have created a table already ) . I have got the database into the project folder . I just want a statement like if(databasepassword == correct from the uitextfield ) { show next page } else { password is incorrect.text } I will figure out on how to show the next page and display the password is incorrect.text I just want a method to cross check with the password saved in the database .   Hi all, I was searching for a light data access framework based on NHibernate. I needed simple CRUD and some simple HQL or LINQ-to-NHhibernate queries. Performance was not an important issue and applications which I'm working on have simple table structure but many tables. This data access framework is going to be used in a ASP.NET Webform application. Once a time I found S#harp architecture, but it was developed for ASP.NET MVC. Just today I found Castle ActiveRecord. But I'm wondering: If any one has any experience with it? Is it suitable for me? Should I consider any specific matter? What about its future? Is Castle ActiveRecord supposed to be developed and be active in coming years? Thanks in Advance

However when i run my code i get the following exception: StrongTypingException The value for column 'CANTITATE' in table 'XLSFacturi' is DBNull. How am I supposed to resolve this ?

• Complicated idea - how to create car racing for my RPG game's players

  So, I want to create car racing for my RPG game's players. Player can create race and choose how many participants can participate in race. After race is being created, other people can join it. When the maximum participants are collected, race begins. My idea, when the last participant joins, then instantly choose the winner (who's car is the best, that person wins), but how can I do it? If I choose to pick the winner after the last participant joins, then I have to put many queries in one page (select data from table, then delete the race, then select players' cars' statistics and pick the winner and then again, using mysql, send message to everyone). But this idea is really not optimal and it will lag cruelly for that last person. Maybe you have any ideas how I can avoid lag and make it more optimal. Thank you very much.

I'm need to write an stored procedure for SQL Server 2008 for performing some huge select query and I need filter it results with specifying filtering type via procedure's parameters (parameterize where clause). • JavaScript: Change to Absolute Positioning

  I'm trying to center a page on any resolution while still being able to use absolute positioning to move pictures. I figure that the best way would be to have a table positioned relatively in the beginning in the center of the page, then change it to absolute positioning in the onload of the page. I think the correct line is: document.getElementById("Object").style.position = "absolute"; However, I put an alert box after it asking where the left side of the object is, I get undefined. But, if I directly assign it to a position (Object.style.left = 500) I will get that number. So I can assign it a value, meaning it is in absolute position, but I cannot pull a value out of that. Kind of confusing but hopefully it makes sense and someone knows what to do. Thanks.

But I think I need to use some columns of this model for the few QListViews in QWizard to fill main table in the right way (for user). For example: use the column2 as the QListView's model on the page1 of the wizard; column3 for page2 for its QListView etc. Please, help me to understand just two things: Am I on the right way? • Conditional Join - join 1 tables 2 ways

  I have a set of (not very well normalised or relational) tables named PLAN, GROUP, PRODUCT CLIENT Most have linkage i.e. PLAN - CLIENT on clno GROUP to PRODUCT on PRODCD However, the linkage between PLAN and GROUP is tricky. A plan has 2 field of interest GRPNO and PRODCD. What I want to do is if GRPNO != 0 then join GROUP on GRPNO. However if GRPNO = 0 then I want to join GROUP on PRODCD. The frustrating thing is that the fileds I want to return in my queries are the same across the board I just need to be able to vary the join, or join the same table twice. The best I can come up with is 2 queries and merge them using datasets, or possibly using a union. Is there a nifty way to do this in one select? I should point out I am access Foxpro over ODBC to do this. Thank you!

  The mysqldump option --tab=path writes the creation script of each table in a separate file. But I can't find the stored procedures, except in the screen dump. I need to have the stored procedures also in separate files. The current solution I am working on is to split the screen dump programatically. Is there a easier way? The code I am using so far is: mysqldump -p$PASSWORD --routines --skip-dump-date --no-create-info --no-data --skip-opt $DATABASE > $BACKUP_PATH/$DATABASE.sql mysqldump -p$PASSWORD --tab=$BACKUP_PATH --skip-dump-date --no-data --skip-opt $DATABASE

• Is there a Oracle equivalent of mysqldump

  Is there a way to dump the content of a oracle table in to a file formated as INSERT statements. I can't use oradump as it is on GPL. I will be running it from a perl CGI script. I am looking for something to dump data directly from oracle server using a single command. Running a select and creating insert statements using perl is too slow as there will be lot of data. I know I can probably do this using spool command and a plsql block at server side. But is there a built in command to do this instead of formating the INSERT statements myself?

  I have a table with an auto-incrementing ID. After inserting a new row, I would like to retrieve the new ID. I found an article that used the MySQL function LAST_INSERT_ID(). The article says to create a new query and submit it. I'm using MySQL Connector C++, Windows XP and Vista, and Visual Studio 9. Here are my questions: Is there an API, for the connector, that will fetch the ID out of the record? Does the result set, after an insert/append, contain the new ID? The LAST_INSERT_ID is MySQL specific. Is there an SQL standard method for obtaining the new ID?

I can execute: SELECT COUNT (Field1) WHERE (Field1 <> '') AS Field1Count SELECT COUNT (Field2) WHERE (Field2 <> '') AS Field2Count SELECT COUNT (Field3) WHERE (Field3 <> '') AS Field3Count SELECT COUNT (Field4) WHERE (Field4 <> '') AS Field4Count Is it possible to roll up these separate SQL statements into one that will return the 4 results in one hit? Is there any performance advantage to doing so (given that the number of columns and rows may be quite large in practice)?

• iPad launch orientation

  After reading many posts, I still haven't got a clue how to solve this problem... The first view of my app is a tableViewController. I override (BOOL) shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: (UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation and it always returns YES. If I hold my iPad upright under landscape orientation, it rotates right after I launch the app. However, if I put my iPad flat on the table, even though my homepage is in landscape orientation, it launches in protrait orientation. So I guess the problem is, how can I get the orientation of my homepage and launch my app with that orientation?

  I am using a Drag-able and re-sizeable DIV's in this HTML file. Where the user will place the DIV tag to his desired place in a main parent DIV tag. Now I want to print this main DIV tag, but the problem is that the code which I'm using to PRINT this main DIV is printing in a sequence, like not the way user has arranged the DIV's. • Ruby Rack: startup and teardown operations (Tokyo Cabinet connection)

  I have built a pretty simple REST service in Sinatra, on Rack. It's backed by 3 Tokyo Cabinet/Table datastores, which have connections that need to be opened and closed. I have two model classes written in straight Ruby that currently simply connect, get or put what they need, and then disconnect. Obviously, this isn't going to work long-term. I also have some Rack middleware like Warden that rely on these model classes. What's the best way to manage opening and closing the connections? Rack doesn't provide startup/shutdown hooks as I'm aware. I thought about inserting a piece of middleware that provides reference to the TC/TT object in env, but then I'd have to pipe that through Sinatra to the models, which doesn't seem efficient either; and that would only get be a per-request connection to TC. I'd imagine that per-server-instance-lifecycle would be a more appropriate lifespan. Thanks!

• MS Sql Full-text search vs. LIKE expression

  Hi. I'm currently looking for a way to search a big database (500MB - 10GB or more on 10 tables) with a lot of different fields(nvarchars and bigints). Many of the fields, that should be searched are not in the same table. An example: A search for '5124 Peter' should return all items, that ... have an ID with 5124 in it, have 'Peter' in the title or description have item type id with 5124 in it created by a user named 'peter' or a user whose id has 5124 in it created by a user with '5124' or 'peter' in his street address. How should i do the search? I read that the full-text search of MS-Sql is a lot more performant than a query with the LIKE keyword and i think the syntax is more clear, but i think it cant search on bigint(id) values and i read it has performance problems with indexing and therefore slows down inserts to the DB. In my project there will be more inserting than reading, so this could be a matter. Thanks in advance, Marks

• Partition of tables in MySQL

  Hello, I have read that in a case where a table has many columns, but most of the time only one of them is used (say a title column in a forum post), a way to increase performance would be a partition to two tables, where one will contain only the title and the other one will contain the other columns (such as the forum post body). However, in case I use select ForumTitle from Forum; won't that be good enough to prevent the load of all columns (such as the forum post's body) to the memory, and eliminate the need of partition?   Quick Story: I started a new job where everyone funneled their questions to 'the geek'. Being an experienced developer, I can do most of my assignments without consultation with the geek - thinks such as how to select the top 10 rows in a table. Question: Is there a preferred way of handling these cases without offending the existing geek while ensuring the best solution gets implemented? My issue is the the existing geek is very young and makes a lot of mistakes, but still sounds authoritative because the other coders are just out of school and don't know better.
