• Is using jquery to call a WCF Data Service from the UI violating the MVC pattern.

  I'm fairly new to ASP.Net MVC 2 and understand the MVC pattern in itself. But my question is what's the best way to populate dropdownlists in the UI sticking to the MVC pattern. Should I be going through the controller? Every article I've seen to do this shows how to do it using javascript and jquery. I have a test application that I'm re-writing in MVC2 I have my dropdowns working with jquery basically calling a WCF Data Service that returns JSON which populates the dropdowns. Seems to me though that this is bypassing the controller and going straight to the model therefore strictly violating the MVC pattern. Or am I missing something obvious here. You thoughts or best practices would be greatly welcome here. Thanks

• Inheriting from class that inherits from DynamicObject

  Hello there, I'm experimenting with C# 4.0's dynamic object model. I've created an abstract class named "Block" that inherits from DynamicObject. It overrides TryGetMember and TrySetMember. Furthermore I've created a usable class named "Brush" that inherits from "Block". I want it to be usable dynamically. But when I create a dynamic object from it and try to access a runtime bound member, it pelts me with an exception telling me that the member doesn't exist. The overridden TryGetMember or TrySetMember methods of the abstract parent class aren't getting called. Is this behaviour to be expected? Thank you!

  I have the following classes: Project Person Person Developer Person Manager In the Project model I have added the following statements: has_and_belongs_to_many :people accepts_nested_attributes_for :people And of course the appropriate statements in the class Person. How can I add an Developer to a Project through the nested_attributes method? The following does not work: @p.people_attributes = [{:name => "Epic Beard Man", :type => "Developer"}] @p.people => [#<Person id: nil, name: "Epic Beard Man", type: nil>] As you can see the type attributes is set to nil instead of Developer.

• Mock Repository vs. Real Repository w/Mocked Data

  I must be doing something fundamentally wrong. I am implmenting my repositories and then testing them with mocked data. All is well. Now I want to test my domain objects so I point them at mock repositories. But I'm finding that I have to re-implement logic from the 'real' repositories into the mocks, or, create 'helper classes' that encapsulate the logic and interact with the repositories (real or mock), and then I have to test those too. So what am I missing - why implement and test mock repositories when I could use the real ones with mocked data? EDIT: To clarify, by 'mocked data' I do not hit the actual database. I have a 'DB mock layer' I can insert under the real repositories that returns known-data.

  Greetings! I run into a problem/bug in production environment with SQL Error: 1104 when deploying a project secured with the ACL tutorial. The full error: SQL Error: 1104: The SELECT would examine more than MAX_JOIN_SIZE rows; check your WHERE and use SET SQL_BIG_SELECTS=1 or SET SQL_MAX_JOIN_SIZE=# if the SELECT is okay [CORE/cake/libs/model/datasources/dbo_source.php, line 666] I've build a small site, worked through the ACL tutorial from the official cake book and locally everything is spiffy. dev. setup consists of: XAMPP: myslq 5.1.33, php 5.3 cakePHP 1.2.7 prod. setup: mysql 5.0.33 php 5.2.2 One of the differences I noticed with mysql setup between local and production servers, is that SQL_BIG_SELECTS is disabled on the production server ( and I don't have privileges to change that, posted a support ticked, didn't hear anything yet) Is there anything I can do about this from my end? • Django equivalent for latest entry for each user

  Hi, I'm surprised this question hasn't come up. Couldn't find much on the web. Using Entry.objects.latest('created_at') I can recover the latest entry for all Entry objects, but say if I want the latest entry for each user? This is something similar to an SQL latest record query. But how do I achieve this using the ORM? Here is my approach I'm wondering if it is the most efficient way to do what I want. First I perform a sub query: Objects are grouped by user and the Max (latest) created_by field is returned for each user (created_at__max) I then filter Entry objects based on the results in the subquery and get the required objects. Entry.objects.filter(created_at__in=Entry.objects.values('user').annotate(Max('created_at')).values_list('created_at__max')) or using a manager: class UsersLatest(models.Manager): def get_query_set(self): return Super(UsersLatest,self).get_query_set().filter(created_at__in=self.model.objects.values('user').annotate(Max('created_at')).values_list('created_at__max')) Is there a more efficient way? possibly without sub query?   Hi, I've configured google apps (google services) to my domain for access mails some thing like mail.mysite.com. I've configured successfully all the accounts include admin and users also. But here the surpricing thing is I cant able to recieve any mails when i sent mails to [email protected]. But I can able to send mails from the same account ([email protected])to any other email ids. Anybody know the reason? I'm working on the same thing from the week. Thanks in advance

• What is the purpose of Managers / Transactions?

  I'm building a spring application for the first time. I'm running into lots of problems with concurrency, and I suspect that there is something wrong with the way I'm managing the backend. The only difference I can see between my backend code and examples I've seen are manager classes. In my code, I have my model (managed by hibernate) and my DAOs on top of that to do CRUD/searching/etc on the models. In example code I have looked at, they never use the DAO directly. Instead, they use manager classes that call the DAOs indirectly. To me, this just seems like pointless code duplication. What are these manager classes for? I've read that they wrap my code in "transactions," but why would I want that?

  Hi, I have a time series based mining model in SQL 2005 Analysis Serveries. I understand in 2008 you can do what if analysis by using EXTEND_MODEL_CASES with a Natural Prediction Join. I'm looking for a workaround or some method of doing the same thing but with 2005. My time series has 3 inputs, and one predict_only. I'd like to use the prediction function to see what types of prediction it makes for 6-12 time intervals in the future with inputs in a separate table.   If invoices can be voided, should they be used as quotations? I have an Invoices tables that is created from inventory associated with a Job. I could have a Quotes table as a halfway-house between inventory and invoices, but it feels like I would have duplicate data structures and logic just to handle an "Is this a quote?" bit. From a business perspective, quotes are different from invoices: a quote is sent prior to an undertaking and an invoice is sent once it is complete and payment is due, but how to represent this in my repository and model. What is an elegant way to store and manage quotes & invoices in a database?

  I'm using ActiveScaffold to create an Admin UI. I have two models: Post and Comments. A Post has-many Comments, and a Comment belongs-to a post. There's a validates_presences_of :text validation the Comment model. The problem is that when I create a new Post from the Admin UI without creating a new Comment in the subform, ActiveScaffold complains about the validation. I can create the Post if I also create a Comment associated with it, which is not what I Want. I can create a new Post manually from script/console. What gives?

• UITableView's cellForRowAtIndexPath is not getting called after low memory warning

  I am new to COCOA and Objective C. I am working on an application which have two controllers with one table view in each, clicking an item form this table will lead to another controller to be pushed to the stack. All was working fine till i started handling low memory warning in app delegate. What i am doing in app delegate's applicationDidReceiveMemoryWarning is, deleting all of my model and popping out all controllers to its root view using popToRootViewControllerAnimated. Now my problem starts, once low mem warning is received table's cellForRowAtIndexPath is not getting called. All other methods of UITableViewDataSource is properly called. What i get on screen is a blank white screen. I am testing my app in iPhone OS 3.0 and development is done in Xcode V 3.1.3. Hope you guys can help me to nail this. Thanks in advance, Jinesh.

  I needed to filter a list of results using the combination of two properties. A plain SQL statement would look like this: SELECT TOP 10 * FROM Person WHERE FirstName + ' ' + LastName LIKE '%' + @Term + '%' The ICriteria in NHibernate that I ended up using was: ICriteria criteria = Session.CreateCriteria(typeof(Person)); criteria.Add(Expression.Sql( "FirstName + ' ' + LastName LIKE ?", "%" + term + "%", NHibernateUtil.String)); criteria.SetMaxResults(10); It works perfectly, but I'm not sure if it is the ideal solution since I'm still learning about NHibernate's Criteria API. What are the recommended alternatives? Is there something besides Expression.Sql that would perform the same operation? I tried Expression.Like but couldn't figure out how to combine the first and last names. Should I map a FullName property to the formula "FirstName + ' ' + LastName" in the mapping class? Should I create a read only FullName property on the domain object then map it to a column?

  You may argue that this question has a legal flavor to it, and that would be correct. Still, it is also a question from a developer's perspective that may help others. I'm building an image community web site/application. Users can upload images. During upload, users have to select the license (copyrighted, attribution non-commercial or public domain). No matter which license they choose, it is just a piece of data. No matter the license, all users can view all images and also download all images, as you normally do on websites. My question is: what responsibility do I have as a "platform" to comply with these licenses? Do I need to actively prevent certain actions on these images, and into what extend? Is displaying the license enough to be legally safe? What if one of my users uploads images for which he has no license? Is it enough to just implement a "report this" feature?

  New to objective-c xcode and core-data so sorry for the remedial question. I have set up a very simple data model: Entity1 and Entity2, both contain a single attribute (String) and a one-to-many relationship with the other. I want to scan Entity1 and depending on the results of the scan create one or more Entity2 objects that link to Entity1. How can I do this? I don’t understand how I create Entity2 type objects in code and how I would define the relationship to the Entity1 object they are related to. I come from a SQL programming background where inserting elements into the Entity2 table with the ID of the related Entiry1 entry is easy. I can’t get my head around the xcode core-data abstraction and would appreciate any help.

• Polymorphic association in reverse

  Let's say that I have two models - one called Post and one other called Video. I then have a third model - Comment - that is polymorphically associated to to each of these models. I can then easily do post.comments and video.comments to find comments assosciated to records of these models. All easy so far. But what if I want to go the other way and I want to find ALL posts and videos that have been commented on and display these in a list sorted on the date that the comment was made? Is this possible? If it helps I'm working on Rails 3 beta.

  Hi, I have an edit form that uses an ajax form to submit to the controller. Depending on the data submitted I redirect the user to one of two pages (by returning a partial view). Both pages rely on javascript/jquery and neither use anything common between the pages. What is the best way to initialise these javascripts on each page? I know there is the AjaxOption OnComplete but both pages are quite dynamic depending on the Model passed and I would rather keep the javascript for both pages seperate rather than having a common method. • Hibernate: can I override an identifier generator using XML with a custom generator?

  I want to use a custom sequence generator in my application, but the entity is located in a domain model jar that is shared with other applications. Apparently entity annotations can be overridden in orm.xml but I can't figure out the proper XML incantation to get this to work. I can modify the annotation in the entity like this this: @GenericGenerator(name = "MYGEN", strategy = "MyCustomGenerator") @GeneratedValue(generator = "MYGEN") But I need to somehow map this to orm.xml in order to override the original annotation. Looking at the orm.xml schema here it appears that I can't even specify a generation type besides "sequence" and "table".

• Password Protected Wordpress MU

  I have a MU site related to Doctors and they will be publishing information that I cannot let outside sources and robots view. Is there a way that when you go to the main domain url, it shows a user/pass login for WP. I would set up the user/pass in the backend. Then they would login, then be able to view the website? I can't have it load up for anyone, I need the website to be password protected to even view the website in general. I know I can use .htaccess to have a user/pass, but it would be ideal to use the user/pass generated by WP so I don't have to mess with code when I create a user. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
