  • Does language endorsement by different platforms (Android, iOS) hurt app development?

    Developing iOS or OSX based applications typically requires knowledge of Objective C, since XCode is highly tailored to this language. Android, on the other hand, has chosen Java as it's preferred language for app development. Now, I know other programming languages can be used to develop applications on either platform, but lets be honest, it's a lot easier (and encouraged) to develop apps using these "native languages." As a new app developer, it seems like it would be much easier if there was a common language and development environment for developing applications on all the major platforms. This thought is probably too idealistic for a programming discussion, and I wouldn't be surprised if the SE vultures flew in to close this topic. But, here's my question. Do you think that language endorsement creates unreasonable barriers to entry for new programmers, or do you think it's beneficial in some way (if so, why) for these platforms to use completely different development environments and languages for app development?

  • What IDE(s) or editor(s) do companies like Google, Apple, IBM, etc. use?

    Even though I have quite some experience in using various tools, I still can't make up my mind whether I prefer using IDE or a simple editor for code editing. Most IDEs I have experienced are written in Java (like Eclipse) which makes them slow and bulky. What's good about them is that it provides lots of tools. On the other hand editors are usually VERY fast. They can also be extended to become more similar to IDEs but usually I don't do that. However, there is Sublime Text 2 which has some basic code completion built-in. My question would be whether most Enterprise companies like Google, Apple, IBM and etc (except Microsoft because they have AMAZING IDE which, I assume, is used by MS developers) force their workers to use IDEs and whether using plain editor with external tools is considered being not professional? P.S. Not talking about cases like Android development where working without IDE barely possible.

    Im trying to swipe left and right on a listview and get the viewflipper to swtich. Just like the remeberthemilk app and the default news and weather app on the nexus one (Swiping through news topics).     I've been trying to track down why Spring Security isn't creating the SPRING_SECURITY_REMEMBER_ME_COOKIE so I turned on logging for org.springframework.security.web.authentication.rememberme. At first glance, the logs make it seem like the login is failing but the login is actually successful in the sense that if I navigate to a page that requires authentication I am not redirected back to the login page. However, the logs appear to be saying the login credentials are invalid. Any ideas as to what is going on?   • Problems with jQuery getJSON using local files in Chrome

    I have a very simple test page that uses XHR requests with jQuery's $.getJSON and $.ajax methods. The same page works in some situations and not in others. Specificially, it doesn't work in Chrome on Ubuntu. I'm testing on Ubuntu 9.10 with Chrome 5.0.342.7 beta and Mac OSX 10.6.2 with Chrome 5.0.307.9 beta. It works correctly when files are installed on a web server from both Ubuntu/Chrome and Mac/Chrome (try it out here). It works correctly when files are installed on local hard drive in Mac/Chrome (accessed with file:///...). It FAILS when files are installed on local hard drive in Ubuntu/Chrome (access with file:///...).     HI, I've surprisingly found problems, in Chrome browser, in calling window parent javascript functions. If I have a window with a javascript function defined in it <script type="text/javascript"> function dolink() { . . . } </script> and I have an iframe inside that window that makes this call using jquery <script type="text/javascript"> $(function() { $('a.arglink').click(function() { window.parent.dolink($(this).attr('href')); return false; }); }); </script> the call to dolink function doesn't work. Stepping with chrome javascript debugger, it appears that window.parent.dolink is undefined. It's by design or a mistake that I made? In Firefox and IE it works fine.

  • onServiceConnected never called after bindService method

    Hi, I have a particular situation: a service started by a broadcast receiver starts an activity. I want to make it possible for this activity to communicate back to the service. I have chosen to use AIDL to make it possible. Everything seems works good except for bindService() method called in onCreate() of the activity. bindService(), in fact, throws a null pointer exception because onServiceConnected() is never called while onBind() method of the service is. Anyway bindService() returns true. The service is obviously active because it starts the activity. I know that calling an activity from a service could sound strange, but unfortunately this is the only way to have speech recognition in a service. Thanks in advance

I can find devices, get their MAC address, create a RFCOMM socket, but when I start the connection, I get the following error message : Service discovery failed. 1)Is it because of the UUID which is not the same on my application and on my PC ? 2)How can I get the correct UUID on my PC ?     Hi Al, I need to make a page which displays a video. Firefox and and Opera support the OGG format, no problem there. Chrome is ... "stupid" and does not recognize OGG. Does Chrome on Windows know how to handle WMV? I already have them encoded, and no I cannot recode new videos since the media is limited in spaced (CDROM). It seems to me that if I can just create an instance of a Chrome browser it should be a similar process, but creating an instance of Chrome is proving to be a tricky task. I am currently looking at: WatiN.Core.Native.Chrome.ChromeBrowser Am I on the right track? Or am I missing assemblies for a WatiN.Core.Chrome?

  • Syntax error on token "QUOTE", VariableDeclaratorId expected after this token

    I've posted a bigger chunk of the code below. You can see that initially QUOTE was procedural- coded in place. I'm trying to learn how to use declarative design so I want to do the same thing but by using resources. It seems like I need to access the string.xml thru the @R.id tag and identify QUOTE with that string value. But I don't know enough to negotiate this. Any tips?     After I had a lot of problems with preemptive authentication , I got it finally working. Now the next problem. I want to get a file with it, but I don't know how. I thought the file data might be in the variable response, but it isn't. Any ideas how this might work?     Hi, I'm having a headache figuring how to retrieve the gwt Radio Buttons values in the server side. Here is my UiBinder form: <g:FormPanel ui:field="form"><g:VerticalPanel ui:field="fruitPanel"> <g:RadioButton name="fruit">apple</g:RadioButton> <g:RadioButton name="fruit">banana</g:RadioButton> <g:SubmitButton>Submit</g:SubmitButton> ... Here is how i initialize the form: form.setAction("/submit"); form.setMethod(FormPanel.METHOD_POST); So i though i would have to do this on the servlet: fruit = req.getParameter("fruit") But of course this doesn't work, parameter fruit doesn't exist :/ Edit: Ok i get parameter fruit but it's always "on" I also did try to add the radio button in java with: RadioButton rb0 = new RadioButton("fruit", "apple"); RadioButton rb1 = new RadioButton("fruit", "banana"); fruitPanel.add(rb0); fruitPanel.add(rb1); So how should i do?
