• Historical / auditable database

  Hi all, This question is related to the schema that can be found in one of my other questions here. Basically in my database I store users, locations, sensors amongst other things. All of these things are editable in the system by users, and deletable. However - when an item is edited or deleted I need to store the old data; I need to be able to see what the data was before the change. There are also non-editable items in the database, such as "readings". They are more of a log really. Readings are logged against sensors, because its the reading for a particular sensor. If I generate a report of readings, I need to be able to see what the attributes for a location or sensor was at the time of the reading. Basically I should be able to reconstruct the data for any point in time. Now, I've done this before and got it working well by adding the following columns to each editable table: valid_from valid_to edited_by If valid_to = 9999-12-31 23:59:59 then that's the current record. If valid_to equals valid_from, then the record is deleted. However, I was never happy with the triggers I needed to use to enforce foreign key consistency. I can possibly avoid triggers by using the extension to the "PostgreSQL" database. This provides a column type called "period" which allows you to store a period of time between two dates, and then allows you to do CHECK constraints to prevent overlapping periods. That might be an answer. I am wondering though if there is another way. I've seen people mention using special historical tables, but I don't really like the thought of maintainling 2 tables for almost every 1 table (though it still might be a possibility). Maybe I could cut down my initial implementation to not bother checking the consistency of records that aren't "current" - i.e. only bother to check constraints on records where the valid_to is 9999-12-31 23:59:59. Afterall, the people who use historical tables do not seem to have constraint checks on those tables (for the same reason, you'd need triggers). Does anyone have any thoughts about this? PS - the title also mentions auditable database. In the previous system I mentioned, there is always the edited_by field. This allowed all changes to be tracked so we could always see who changed a record. Not sure how much difference that might make. Thanks.

• Which HTTP redirect status code is best for this REST API scenario?

  I'm working on a REST API. The key objects ("nouns") are "items", and each item has a unique ID. E.g. to get info on the item with ID foo: GET http://api.example.com/v1/item/foo New items can be created, but the client doesn't get to pick the ID. Instead, the client sends some info that represents that item. So to create a new item: POST http://api.example.com/v1/item/ hello=world&hokey=pokey With that command, the server checks if we already have an item for the info hello=world&hokey=pokey. So there are two cases here. Case 1: the item doesn't exist; it's created. This case is easy. 201 Created Location: http://api.example.com/v1/item/bar Case 2: the item already exists. Here's where I'm struggling... not sure what's the best redirect code to use. 301 Moved Permanently? 302 Found? 303 See Other? 307 Temporary Redirect? Location: http://api.example.com/v1/item/foo I've studied the Wikipedia descriptions and RFC 2616, and none of these seem to be perfect. Here are the specific characteristics I'm looking for in this case: The redirect is permanent, as the ID will never change. So for efficiency, the client can and should make all future requests to the ID endpoint directly. This suggests 301, as the other three are meant to be temporary. The redirect should use GET, even though this request is POST. This suggests 303, as all others are technically supposed to re-use the POST method. In practice, browsers will use GET for 301 and 302, but this is a REST API, not a website meant to be used by regular users in browsers. It should be broadly usable and easy to play with. Specifically, 303 is HTTP/1.1 whereas 301 and 302 are HTTP/1.0. I'm not sure how much of an issue this is. At this point, I'm leaning towards 303 just to be semantically correct (use GET, don't re-POST) and just suck it up on the "temporary" part. But I'm not sure if 302 would be better since in practice it's been the same behavior as 303, but without requiring HTTP/1.1. But if I go down that line, I wonder if 301 is even better for the same reason plus the "permanent" part. Thoughts appreciated!

• Alternatives to requiring users to register for an account?

  I'm working on a side project to build a new web app idea of mine. For the sake of discussion, let's say this app displays a random photograph of a famous work of art. On a scale of 1 to 5, users are asked to rate how well they like each piece of art, and then are shown the next photo. Eventually, the app is able to get an sense of the person's style and is able to recommend artwork that he/she may find pleasing. The whole concept is similar to Netflix. I understand how to do all the preference matching logic (although not as sophisticated as Netflix). But I'd like to find a way to do this without requiring that users create an account first. This is a novelty website that a typical user might use only a handful of times. Requiring registration is overkill and will likely drastically reduce it's utility. I'd like to allow people to begin rating artwork within five seconds of their initial pageview, yet maintain the integrity of the voting (since recommendations are predicated on how other people have rated the various pieces of artwork). Can it be done? Some ideas: OpenID. The perfect solution except for the fact that it's not wildly used and my target audience isn't the most technically adept demographic. Text message. User inputs phone number and is texted a four digit code to key into the web app. Quick, easy, and great way to limit abuse. However, privacy concerns abound... people are probably even less likely to give me their phone number than their email address. Facebook login. I personally don't have a Facebook account due to privacy concerns. And I'd really hate to support such a proprietary platform. Hash code/Bookmark. Vistor's initial pageview generates a 5 or 6 digit alphanumeric code that is embedded in each subsequent URL. They can bookmark any page to save their state. Good: Very simple system that doesn't require any user action. Bad: Very easy to stuff the ballot box, might be difficult to account for users sharing the link containing their ID code via email or social networking sites.

• Problem in retrieving the ini file through web page

  Hi All, I am using an .ini file to store some values and retrieve values from it using the iniparser. When I give (hardcode) the query and retrive the value through the command line, I am able to retrive the ini file and do some operation. But when I pass the query through http, then I am getting an error (file not found), i.e., the ini file couldn't be loaded. • Calculate # of Rowspans and Colspans based on keys in a Multi-Array

  Ok, I have these 2 types of layouts, basically, it can be any layout really. I have decided to use tables for this, since using div tags cause undesirable results in some possible layout types. Here are 2 pics that describe the returned results of row and column: This would return the $layout array like so: $layout[0][0] $layout[0][1] $layout[1][1] In this layout type: $layout[1][0] is NOT SET, or doesn't exist. Row 1, Column 0 doesn't exist in here. So how can we use this to help us determine the rowspans...? Ok, this layout type would now return the following: $layout[0][0] $layout[0][1] $layout[1][0] $layout[2][0] $layout[2][1] $layout[3][1] Again, there are some that are NOT SET in here: $layout[1][1] $layout[3][0] Ok, I have an array called $layout that does a foreach on the row and column, but it doesn't grab the rows and columns that are NOT SET. So I created a for loop (with the correct counts of how many rows there are and how many columns there are). Now looping through them all and determining whether it's NOT SET, tells me that either a rowspan or a colspan needs to be put into something somewhere. I'm completely lost here. Basically, I would like to have an array returned here, something like this: $spans['row'][ row # ][ column # ] = Number of rowspans for that <td> element. $spans['column'][ row # ][ column # ] = Number of colspans for that <td> element. It's either going to need a colspan or a rowspan, it will definitely never need both for the same element. Am I going about this whole thing the wrong way? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!! I've been driving myself crazy with this for days! Pllleaase...

• Verify Authenticode signature as being from our company for automatic updater

  I am implementing an automatic update feature and need some advice on how to do this securely using best practices. I would like to use the downloaded file's Authenticode signature to verify that it is safe to run (i.e. originates from our company and hasn't been tampered with). My question is very similar to question #2008519. The bottom-line question: what's the best, most secure way to check Authenticode signatures for an automatic update feature? What fields in the certificate should be checked? Requirements being: (1) check signature is valid, (2) check it's my signature, (3) old clients can still update when my certificate expires and I get a new one. Here's some background information / ideas from my research: I believe this could be broken into two steps: Verify that the signature is valid. I believe this should be easy using WinVerifyTrust as outlined in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa382384(VS.85).aspx - I don't expect problems here. Verify that the signature corresponds to our company, and not another company. This seems to be a more difficult question to answer: One possibility is to check some of the strings in the signature. Could be obtained via code at MS KB article #323809, but this article doesn't make recommendations on what fields should be checked for this type of application (or any other, for that matter). Question #1072540 also illustrates how to get some certificate info, but again doesn't recommend what fields to actually check. My concern is that the strings might not be the best check: what if another person is able to obtain a certificate with the same name, for example? Or if there's a valid reason for us to change the strings in the future? The person at question #2008519 has a very similar requirement. His need for a "TrustedByUs" function is identical to mine. However, he goes about doing the check by comparing public keys. While this would work in the short-term, it seems like it won't work for an automatic update feature. This is because code signing certificates are only valid for 2 - 3 years max. Therefore, in the future, when we buy a new certificate in 2 years, the old clients wouldn't be able to update any more due to the change in public key.

• Detect Client Computer name when an RDP session is open

  Hey all, My manager has pointed out to me a few nifty things that one of our accounting applications can do because it can load different settings based on the machine name of the host and the machine name of the client when the package is opened in an RDP session. We want to provide similar functionality in one of my company's applications. I've found out on this site how to detect if I'm in an RDP session, but I'm having trouble finding information anywhere on how to detect the name of the client computer. Any pointers in the right direction would be great. I'm coding in C# for .NET 3.5 EDIT The sample code I cobbled together from the advice below - it should be enough for anyone who has a use for the WTSQuerySessionInformation to get a feel for what's going on. • Can you find a pattern to sync files knowing only dates and filenames?

  Imagine if you will a operating system that had the following methods for files Create File: Creates (writes) a new file to disk. Calling this if a file exists causes a fault. Update File: Updates an existing file. Call this if a file doesn't exist causes a fault. Read File: Reads data from a file. Enumerate files: Gets all files in a folder. Files themselves in this operating system only have the following meta data: Created Time: The original date and time the file was created, by the Create File method. Modified Time: The date and time the file was last modified by the Update File method. If the file has never been modified, this will equal the Create Time. You have been given the task of writing an application which will sync the files between two directories (lets call them bill and ted) on a machine. However it is not that simple, the client has required that The application never faults (see methods above). That while the application is running the users can add and update files and those will be sync'd next time the application runs. Files can be added to either the ted or bill directories. File names cannot be altered. The application will perform one sync per time it is run. The application must be almost entirely in memory, in other words you cannot create a log of filenames and write that to disk and then check that the next time. The exception to point 6 is that you can store date and times between runs. Each date/time is associated with a key labeled A through J (so you have 10 to use) so you can compare keys between runs. There is no way to catch exceptions in the application. Answer will be accepted based on the following conditions: First answer to meet all requirements will be accepted. If there is no way to meet all requirements, the answer which ensures the smallest amount of missed changes per sync will be accepted. A bounty will be created (100 points) as soon as possible for the prize. The winner will be selected one day before the bounty ends. • PyOpenGL - passing transformation matrix into shader

  I am having trouble passing projection and modelview matrices into the GLSL shader from my PyOpenGL code. My understanding is that OpenGL matrices are column major, but when I pass in projection and modelview matrices as shown, I don't see anything. I tried the transpose of the matrices, and it worked for the modelview matrix, but the projection matrix doesn't work either way. • jQuery ajaxSubmit ignored by IE8

  Hi there, I am combing the jQuery validation plug-in with the jQuery Form Plugin to submit the form via AJAX. This works perfectly in Firefox & Chrome, but (as usual) Internet Explorer is being a pain. For reasons that are alluding me, IE is ignoring the ajaxSubmit, as a result it submits the form in the normal fashion.   I have question about a basic xml file I'm parsing and just putting in simple nextlines(Enters). I'll try to explain my problem with this next example. I'm( still) building an xml tree and all it has to do ( this is a testtree ) is put the summary in an itemlist. I then export it to a plist so I can see if everything is done correctly. • Spring validation errors not displayed

The validator is invoked as expected and works okay, but the errors i set on the Errors objects are not displayed, when i am sent back to my form because of the validation errors. The validator validates a command object containing a list of objects, so that's why i give a index on the list in the command object when registering an error message (for example: "fields["+index+"]".value). Or is it that the Errors object containing the errors is not available to my view? Any help is welcome and appreciated, it might give me a hint or point me in right direction.

• Castle ActiveRecord - schema generation without enforcing referential integrity?

  Hi all, I've just started playing with Castle active record as it seems like a gentle way into NHibernate. I really like the idea of the database schema being generate from my classes during development. Camera kits exist independently of cameras and tripods, but are sometimes related. The problem is, if I use createschema, this will put foreign key constraints on the Camera and Tripod tables. I don't want this, I want to be able to to set CamKitId to null on the tripod and camera tables to indicate that it is not part of a CameraKit. Is there a way to tell activerecord/nhibernate to still see it as related, without enforcing the integrity? I was thinking I could have a cameraKit record in there to indicate "no camera kit", but it seems like oeverkill. Or is my schema wrong? Am I doing something I shouldn't with an ORM? (I've not really used ORMs much) Thanks!

• Entering and retrieving data from SQLite for an android List View

  Hi all, I started learning android development a few weeks ago and have gone through the developer.android.com tutorials etc. But now I have a problem. I'm trying to create an app which tracks the usage of each installed app. Therefore I'm pulling the names of all installed apps using the PackageManager and then trying to put them into an SQLite database table. I am using the Notepad Tutorial SQLite implementation but I'm running into some problems that I have tried for days to solve. I have 2 classes, the DBHelper class and the actual ListActivity class. For some reason the app force closes when I try and run my fillDatabase() function which gets all the app names from the PackageManager and tries to put them into the database: private void fillDatabase() { PackageManager manager = this.getPackageManager(); List<ApplicationInfo> appList = manager.getInstalledApplications(0); for(int i = 0; i < appList.size(); i++) { mDbHelper.addApp(manager.getApplicationLabel(appList.get(i)).toString(), 0); } } addApp() is a function defined in my AppsDbHelper class and looks as follows: public long createApp(String name, int usage) { ContentValues initialValues = new ContentValues(); initialValues.put(KEY_NAME, name); initialValues.put(KEY_USAGE, usage); return mDb.insert(DATABASE_TABLE, null, initialValues); } The database create is defined as follows: private static final String DATABASE_CREATE = "create table notes (_id integer primary key autoincrement, " + "title text not null, usage integer not null);"; I have commented out all statements that follow fillDatabase(); in the onCreate() method of the ListActivity and so know that it is definetely the problem but I don't know why. I am taking the appName and putting it into the KEY_NAME field of the row and putting 0 into the KEY_USAGE field of the row (because initially, my app will default the usage of each app to 0 (not used yet)). If my addApp() function doesn't take the usage and just puts KEY_NAME into the ContentValues and into the database, it seems to work fine, but I want a column for usage. • M-V-VM, isn't the Model leaking into the View?

  The point of M-V-VM as we all know is about speraration of concerns. In patterns like MVVM, MVC or MVP, the main purpose is to decouple the View from the Data thereby building more flexible components. I'll demonstrate first a very common scenario found in many WPF apps, and then I'll make my point: Say we have some StockQuote application that streams a bunch of quotes and displays them on screen.   Hi, I have found some example code that creates a gradient fill in a WPF rectangle control: <Rectangle Height="{Binding ElementName=txtName}" Width="{Binding ElementName=txtName}"> <Rectangle.Fill> <LinearGradientBrush> <GradientStop Color="Silver" Offset="0.0" /> <GradientStop Color="Black" Offset="0.5" /> <GradientStop Color="white" Offset="1.0" /> </LinearGradientBrush> </Rectangle.Fill> </Rectangle> I have some written some code that displays a collection of ListBox's that contain details from MyObject: <UserControl.Resources> <DataTemplate x:Key="CustomerTemplate"> <Border BorderThickness="2" BorderBrush="Silver" CornerRadius="5" Padding="1" Height="50"> <Grid x:Name="thisGrid"> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto" /> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" > <Image Source="C:\MyImage.jpg" Height="50" Width="100" ></Image> </StackPanel> <Border Grid.Column="1" Margin="0" Padding="0"> <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical"> <TextBlock Name="txtName" Text="{Binding Name}" Background="Silver" Foreground="Black" FontSize="16" FontWeight="Bold" Height="25"/> </StackPanel> </Border> </Grid> </Border> </DataTemplate> </UserControl.Resources> <ListBox ItemsSource="{Binding}" ItemTemplate="{StaticResource CustomerTemplate}" Name="grdList" HorizontalContentAlignment="Stretch" VerticalContentAlignment="Stretch" > </ListBox> I would like to apply the same stlye of fill that i get with the first example, in each of my ListBox's. I can't quite figure out how to do this. Can anyone help? Thanks
