• What's the cleanest way to programmatically kill and restart explorer.exe?

  Greetings all, I'm working on a Windows program whose installation necessitates restarting explorer.exe. I know "Reboot your computer to complete the installation" is the standard method here, but I'd like my installer to give users the option of just restarting Explorer so they can start using my program immediately. What's the best way to do that? Of course I could just find and kill the process, but that seems rather icky. Is there some trick to, say, make Explorer think the user is logging off and close cleanly? Thanks!

• Client fails to connect with RMI registry when using ProcessBuilder

  If i'm creating the RMI registry from command line, the client has no problem in binding objects to the registry. However, if i'm starting the RMI registry using ProcessBuilder, it's giving error. • Legacy Database, Fluent NHibernate, and Testing my mappings

  As the post title implies, I have a legacy database (not sure if that matters), I'm using Fluent NHibernate and I'm attempting to test my mappings using the Fluent NHibernate PersistenceSpecification class. My question is really a process one, I want to test these when I build locally in Visual Studio using the built in Unit Testing framework for now. Obviously this implies (I think) that I'm going to need a database. What are some options for getting this into the build? If I use an in memory database does NHibernate or Fluent NHibernate have some some mechanism for sucking the database schema from a target database or maybe the in memory database can do this? Will I need to manually get the schema to feed to an in memory database? Ideally I would like to get this this setup to where the other developers don't really have to think about it other than when they break the build because the tests don't pass.

• What are some tips for troubleshooting builds of complicated software?

  Sometimes I want to build Python or GCC from scratch just for fun, but I can't parse the errors I get, or don't understand statements like "libtool link error # XYZ". What are some tricks that unix/systems gurus use to compile software of this size from scratch? Of course I already do things like read config.log (if there is one), google around, and post in newsgroups. I'm looking for things that either make the process go smoother or get me more information about the error to help me understand and fix it. It's a little tough to get this information sometimes, because some compile bugs can be quite obscure. What can I do at that point?

• What is a TFS Agile Issue?

  With TFS2010 using the "MSF for Agile Software Development v5" process template, I'm having some difficulty in understanding exactly what an Issue is. The most specific documentation I've been able to find is this. Is an Issue a higher-level item for which we will probably generate a Bug for after some investigation in code/requirements? Or is an Issue something different than a Bug because it has not actually a mistake in code but is more of a critical oversight in design (for example, there was never an attempt to create a datepicker for all date fields and this is a UX issue but not really a bug) and therefore a change request of sorts? Or is it something different?

• Partial compilation of openwrt project

  I would like to get an idea or reference to compile only subset on the openwrt project. i am aware of the menuconfig utility but this is not enough for my goal. i would like to compile only the tool-chain (binutils + gcc + glibc) for a specific target (ar71xx) and also the kernel. now, after looking in the makefiles etc, i have noticed that most of the work in actually patching the toolchain and the kernel and then compile it. is there any option to stop build process after the patching so i can have only the source code patched and i can write my own make file to compile it?

• Named semaphores in Python?

  Hi, I have a script in python which uses a resource which can not be used by more than a certain amount of concurrent scripts running. Classically, this would be solved by a named semaphores but I can not find those in the documentation of the multiprocessing module or threading . Am I missing something or are named semaphores not implemented / exposed by Python? and more importantly, if the answer is no, what is the best way to emulate one? Thanks, Boaz PS. For reasons which are not so relevant to this question, I can not aggregate the task to a continuously running process/daemon or work with spawned processed - both of which, it seems, would have worked with the python API.

• What are your build and release steps? When to increment build numbers?

  I am having trouble defining and automating my build process despite simple requirements: Every build should have a unique build number. Every tagged release should be reproducible What I have: A C++, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x, Subversion development environment. A build machine ( actually a virtual machine ) A version.h file with #defines for major, minor, and buildnumber. A script for incrementing the version.h buildnumber. A rpmbuild spec file that exports the tagged Subversion source, builds, and makes the rpm installer packages. Questions: Assuming multiple developers per project, when should the build number be incremented and version.h file be checked-in? The build machine? Some sort of Subversion hook?   Agile methodologies are rather prevalent these days, but I cannot seem to find much documentation on what metrics are most useful and why. I have found many more things saying that some traditional metrics like LOC and code coverage of tests are not appropriate, leaving two main questions: Why are those two (and other) metrics inappropriate? What metrics are best for Agile and why? Even with an Agile process, wouldn't you want to know how much code coverage you have with your unit tests? Or is it simply that this metric (and others) just are not as useful as other metrics like cyclomatic complexity and velocity?

• How do I execute a cmd in C#, then in the same window execute another command that follows?

  Hey Guys, Right what im trying to accomplish is a program that basically sets the active partition in 1 click, saving the effort time and skill of using cmd prompt etc. I have looked into the System.Management name space but couldn't work out how to use it :( So i have resorted to using CMD, i have got a module application written in C# and basically i want to run "DISKPART" which then starts the diskpart in the cmd window, then i want to ask it to "Select disk 0" followed by "select partition 1" finally followed by "active". Doing this in CMD yourself works fine but with an application its proved to be awkward :( What ive managed to get it to do is run DiskPart fine in one window with Process.Start, then get it to open a new window and run the next piece of code but because the new window hasnt ran the diskpart cmd it doesnt work :( Any suggestions? • Processes sharing cores on Ubuntu system

  My coworkers and I share an 8-core server running Ubuntu for our batch processes. I tend to run 4 processes at a time, each of which consumes 100% CPU per core when nothing else is running. When a coworker runs his processes (typically about 4 at a time), his also get 100% per. However, when both of us run ours (he always goes first), his still get 100% and mine seem to divide the remaining processing power and linger in the 10-40% range. I even reniced his process to a lower value and it did not change. What are the issues that may cause this?

• Forbid developer to commit code because of making weekly build

  Our development team (about 40 developers) has a formal build every two weeks. We have a process that in the "build day", every developers are forbiden to commit code into SVN. I don't think this is a good idea because: Build will take days (even weeks in bad time) to make and BVT. People couldn't comit code as they will, they will not work. People will comit all codes in a hurge pack, so the common is hard to write. I want know if your team has same policy, and if not how do you take this situation. Thanks

  To me this sounds like a really stupid question. Why would you not use a build tool? However, I need to explain my co-worker why he should be using a build tool of some sort. He's getting really into the idea of working as a team with more programmers, but he isn't understanding the bigger picture of what needs to change in the build process in order to work with a larger team; (i.e. defensive programming/unit testing your code, having a bug database, programming modular libraries, and using sub-repositories to store modules in version control. This is a rather large stack of technologies that I need to prove the ROI of...so I figured I'd start with the ROI of using a build tool rather than just...say...clicking compile.

  I wrote code that injects a function in Internet Explorer/Chrome but it doesn't work with these processes. Basically, it fills one big structure with all the APIs my function needs, strings, and other data, then it opens a process to get a handle, virtualallocex to allocate enough memory to store a function and structure there, and it writes the function and the structure in allocated memory. It then runs createremotethread there with the function as a starting address and structure as parameter. It works all great with calc/notepad/winamp processes but I have problems with browser injection. • Is everyone baking the same CI cake?

  I can't help but wonder about this whole Continous Integration process and wanted to know what you think about it all. From my perspective, we're constructing our own 'flavour' of NAnt/Ivy/CruiseControl.Net in-house and can't help but get the feeling that other dev shops are doing exactly the same work, but then everybody is finding out the same problems and pitfalls with it. I'm not complaining about NAnt, Ivy or CruiseControl at all, as they've been brilliant in helping our team of developers become more sure of the quality of their code, but it just seems strange that these tools are very popular, yet we're all re-inventing the CI-wheel. Is there a pre-made solution for building .Net applications, using the tools mentioned above, and if so, why aren't we all using them??

• Unexpected cross threading issue

  I'm trying to do something very simple in principal, but I keep getting a cross-threading exception which has me stumped because I'm not setting out to use multiple threads. I have a Windows Forms application. It launches another Windows Forms application (using the System.Diagnostics.Process class) , and catches the Exited event when that application is closed. My application event handler then tries to copy text from the clipboard to a control on the current displayed form. At this point a Cross-threading exception is thrown. I assume that the problem is that the event from the closing application is in another thread (I'm outside my comfort zone here, so bear with me), so the question boils down to "How do I prevent this exception?" I'm somewhat constrained into having to copy from the clipboard, but I could launch the other application a different way if that would solve the problem.

• C# : Redirect console application output : How to flush the output?

  I am spawning external console application and use async output redirect. as shown in this SO post My problem is it seems that the spawned process needs to produce certain amount of output before I get the OutputDataReceived event notification. I want to receive the OutputDataReceived event as soon as possible. I have a bare-bones redirecting application, and here are some observations: 1. When I call a simple 'while(true) print("X");' console application (C#) I receive output event immediately. 2. When I call a 3d party app I am trying to wrap from the command line I see the line-by-line output. 3. When I call that 3d party app from my bare-bone wrapper (see 1) - the output comes in chunks (about one page size). What happens inside that app? FYI: The app in question is a "USBee DX Data Exctarctor (Async bus) v1.0".

• How many months of fixing somebody else's bugs would you endure?

  I understand that fixing bugs is a way to learn the system for the new people. But what if the system is so large that you can fix other people's bugs for 2 years and still not learn about every aspect of it? I would imagine that most people would get bored and not give their 100% to fixing bugs caused by others. Is there something wrong with the process? Everybody is chanting "Scrum! Scrum!" and getting certified, but that is just another phrase to me. How do you get noticed if all you do is fix bugs? Stand by a water-cooler perhaps and brag about how cool my bug fixes are? My political beliefs seem to be opposite from everybody else's at the company, and I have zero interest in pop culture/trivia/Tiger Woods scandals - there goes my opportunity to socialize during a lunch hour.

  Rake (like make) is able to have many targets/tasks specified on invocation. Is it possible for a rake task to access the list of tasks the user invoked, in order to do its job? Scenario: Consider a Rake-based build tool. A help task would like to know what tasks were also specified in order to print their usage and halt the build process. The benefit of this as opposed to rake-style parameter passing are cleaner syntax (rake help build instead of rake help task=build) and chaining (rake help build run_tests would print usage for both).

• GIT vs. Perforce- Two VCS will enter... one will leave.

  So I'm in the process of getting GIT sold at work. First thing I need is to convince everyone that GIT is better at what they're already used to doing. We currently use Perforce. Anybody else go through a similar sale? Any good links/advice? One of the big wins is that we can worth with it disconnected from the network. Another win imo is the way adds/checkouts are handled. • Redirect window of command line tool to your app (Windows)

  Hello, is there a way (on Windows XP+) to redirect the output of a window created by a process created with e.g. CreateProcess to a window of your own program? I'd like to make a nicer GUI for ffplay.exe which is an open source video player. It is a command line tool, which opens a simple window in which it plays back the video. Can I "capture" this window and display the output in my own program somehow? Thanks for any hints you can provide.

• Do you use Phing?

  Does anyone use Phing to deploy PHP applications, and if so how do you use it? We currently have a hand-written "setup" script that we run whenever we deploy a new instance of our project. We just checkout from SVN and run it. It sets some basic configuration variables, installs or reloads the database, and generates a v-host for the site instance. I have often thought that maybe we should be using Phing. I haven't used ant much, so I don't have a real sense of what Phing is supposed to do other than script the copying of files from one place to another much as our setup script does. What are some more advanced uses that you can give examples of to help me understand why we would or would not want to integrate Phing into our process.
