  • Error codes 80070490 and 8024200D in Windows Update

    How do get past these stupid errors? The way I have set things up is that Windows Update tells me when there are new updates available and then I review them before installing them. Yesterday it told me that there were 11 new updates. So I reviewed them and I saw that about half of them were security updates for Vista x64 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, and half of them were just regular updates for Vista x64. I checked them all and hit the Install button. It seemed to work at first, updates were being downloaded and installed, but then at update 11 of 11 total it got stuck and gave me the two error codes you see in the title. Here are some screenshots to give you an idea of what it looks like. This is what it looks like when it presents the updates to me. This is how it looks like when the installation fails. I'm not sure if you're gonna see this very well but these are the updates it's trying to install. Update: This is on Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit with integrated SP2, installed only two weeks ago on 2012-10-02. Aside from this, the install is working flawlessly. I have not done any major changes to the system like installing new devices or drivers. What I have tried so far: - I tried installing the System Update Readiness Tool (the correct one for Vista x64) from Microsoft. This did not solve the issue. As I have done so and it didn't solve the problem the next step would be to try to repair Windows. Before I do that, is there anything else I can try? Microsoft automatic troubleshooter If I click the automatic troubleshooter link available on the solution web page above it directs me to download a file called windowsupdate.diagcab. But after download this file is not associated to any Windows program. Is this the so called Microsoft Fix It program? It doesn't have its icon, it's just blank file. Does it need to be associated? And to what Windows program?

  • Mouse wheel scrolling in less and vim using urxvt

    I have started working with rxvt-unicode (aka urxvt) but found an issue with mouse-wheel scrolling, as compared to gnome-terminal and konsole. The mouse wheel works fine for going through the scrollback buffer, but it doesn't work for automatic scrolling in less/most or vim (though in vim, setting mouse=a makes it work, but in a very different way, which I don't have to do with gnome-terminal/konsole). Is there a way to make urxvt behave like gnome-terminal and konsole when in less and vim where the mouse wheel Just Works?

  • Is post-sudden-power-loss filesystem corruption on an SSD drive's ext3 partition "expected behavior"?

    My company makes an embedded Debian Linux device that boots from an ext3 partition on an internal SSD drive. Because the device is an embedded "black box", it is usually shut down the rude way, by simply cutting power to the device via an external switch. This is normally okay, as ext3's journalling keeps things in order, so other than the occasional loss of part of a log file, things keep chugging along fine. However, we've recently seen a number of units where after a number of hard-power-cycles the ext3 partition starts to develop structural issues -- in particular, we run e2fsck on the ext3 partition and it finds a number of issues like those shown in the output listing at the bottom of this Question. Running e2fsck until it stops reporting errors (or reformatting the partition) clears the issues. My question is... what are the implications of seeing problems like this on an ext3/SSD system that has been subjected to lots of sudden/unexpected shutdowns? My feeling is that this might be a sign of a software or hardware problem in our system, since my understanding is that (barring a bug or hardware problem) ext3's journalling feature is supposed to prevent these sorts of filesystem-integrity errors. (Note: I understand that user-data is not journalled and so munged/missing/truncated user-files can happen; I'm specifically talking here about filesystem-metadata errors like those shown below) My co-worker, on the other hand, says that this is known/expected behavior because SSD controllers sometimes re-order write commands and that can cause the ext3 journal to get confused. In particular, he believes that even given normally functioning hardware and bug-free software, the ext3 journal only makes filesystem corruption less likely, not impossible, so we should not be surprised to see problems like this from time to time. Which of us is right?     I've got a MacBook with a Core 2 Duo CPU. I've got CoreDuoTemp installed which can show the current speed of the CPU. It appears to always show: Mini : 1.0 GHz Maxi : 2.0 GHz Current : 2.0 GHz I believe my laptop would run longer on battery if it were to run at a maximum of 1 GHz. Is there a way to configure this, or is the CPU speed adjustment completely automatic?

  • Is Windows Update deleting Sticky Notes (StikyNot.exe)?

    I got a Windows 7 computer for Christmas and I like the Sticky Notes application. But twice now, the sticky notes have disappeared after an automatic Windows Update. I managed to navigate system restore and recover them, but it was a pain. The update seems to be deleting StikyNot.exe, but I haven't been able to find any info on why. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas how to prevent it from happening again?

    In one tablet computer yesterday I make the usually automatic updates from ms. This tablet have comodo firewall, and and old nod32. After that I notice very soon, that something start sending hundred smtp e-mail the moment the tablet computer is connected to the internet. Also the previous t time I have make updates, some 'virus' gets on the computer but I find very easy and stop it from run. I find using the autostart from sysinternals, and the process explorer. This virus has also break the automatic update from ms, and lost a lot of time to fix it. This is my usually practice when some call me to delete a virus from xp, I use the process explorer and autostart to locate the program, and delete it from everywhere. How ever the last one is so hard to locate. 0.I delete everything from temp directorys and search for suspicious files everywhere, run the nod32, 1.I use the TCPView to see witch program sending the smpt (I see hundred open smpt connections sending emails) but the SMTP was opened by the main service program. 2. I use the process monitor to locate whats happens but find again the main service that do the job. 3.I start delete many thinks on process explorer, but did not found the one that send the emails 4.I open many times the autorun but did not find there also something suspicion, I stop some thinks, but nothing happends. 5.From the last time that I suspect that this virus come to my computer and I partial remove it, he has broke my windows update, to fix it I lost a lot of time, searching on Internet for the error - it was just a register to a dll. 6.From what I suspect something is trigger after the ms update. 7.For the moment I block the email ports, and try to find a way to locate it. I like to notice here that everything is genius - and I mean everything. I believe that this virus pass from a page, or from an e-mail that this computer receive it in the past. Any help or information are appreciate. If you know anything similar, if you know how this virus send emails and how can I locate it, if you know any anti-virus anti-spyware program that maybe can find it.   • Windows remote administration suite that doesn't rely on Active Directory, Domains, etc

    I know there are a number of suites out there that allow Windows machines on a Domain, or in Active Directory to be remotely administrated (windows updates, program installs, maintenance, etc); but does there exist a package that does this for non-AD/Domain setups? The kind of things I'm looking for: manage windows updates, + automatic applying custom package pushing (custom scripts, etc) general maintenance, visibily of health works for 2003/2008/2008R2 works without Active Directory or being part of a Domain (Might be able to manage putting all the machines on a Workgroup, if that helps)

  • Windows update deleting Sticky Notes (StikyNot.exe)?

    Got a win7 computer for xmas and like the Sticky Notes But twice now, after running an automatic update, the sticky notes disappeared Managed to navigate system restore and recover it, but what a pain in the butt. The update seems to be deleting the exe, but I haven't been able to find any info on why. Anyone else experience this? Any ideas how to prevent it happening again? Cheers

  • Windows 7 DNS stuck at manual

    I am using the google dns servers most of the time, but for one particular wifi connection it blocks that ip so I have to revert back to automatically choosing DNS... The problem now is everytime I connect to this network, I have to change it back to automatic DNS manually (ironically), it's stuck on using the google DNS by default... It's a trivial problem, but would be fab if someone can help me out here...

  • Network Diagramming software options?

    I've used The Dude to map my network, but I can only export the network map as a graphics file. I've also used Dia and Vision to manually diagram portions of my network. Does anyone out there have a solution where I can do automatic network mapping using a tool like "The Dude", then pull that file over to a manually editable format for cleaning up and/or enhancing in Visio or Dia?
