Lee writes: I don’t really monitor my computer constantly, only when something is hanging up and I need to see what’s causing it. That being said, I do have Rainmeter so I can quickly see how much RAM or CPU is being used. For anything more detailed, I just go into the task manager and sort by RAM or CPU. • Smartassembly 5: it lives! Early Access builds now available

  I'm pleased to announce that, late last week, we put out the first early access build for Smartassembly 5, Red Gate's fantastic code protection and error reporting tool, which we acquired last September. You can download it via: http://www.red-gate.com/messageboard/viewforum.php?f=116 It's obviously pretty early days, so please do not try to use this to protect a production application, but we've already done a lot of work in some key areas: We're simplifying and streamlining the licensing model (you won't see this yet, but a lot of the work on this has already been done). We've improved usability of the product, with a better menu, reordering of project settings, and better defaults. We've also fixed a load of bugs, which I'll let Alex blog about in more detail. On a slightly more trivial level, the curly braces are also no more. Over the coming weeks, we'll be adding more improvements, and starting usability tests. • How to act when you get the last warning? [closed]

  I'm a software developer, currently working on web development. We are a small company a team with 2 persons, a developer and a designer and we have no-one to test our applications. From the last week I was somehow rushed to finish a task within a project programmed by someone else and I released it with a bug which I did not see. Today I got the last warning and if there is a release with a bug I will be fired. So is this fair enough to get fired because releases with bugs without any testers around or should I really improve my skills on testing?

• Silverlight Goes Mobile!

  The most exciting announcements from Mix 2010 last week for me were the release of the Windows Phone 7 Series SDK and the news that the platform utilizes Silverlight for the application development technology. From the press and exposure that the platform is being given and the experience that is promised it looks like the Windows Phone 7 Series could eventually compete with the iPhone. For me this is exciting as Silverlight can now be used to develop RIA apps, easily deployed desktop apps and mobile apps. As someone who delivers enterprise technology solutions this equates to a whole bunch of opportunity knocking at the door and asking to join the party. Watch this space for future posts on developing apps on the Windows Phone 7 Series platform!

• Hacking Windows 7 Phone

  So here is the Hack of the Week. For those who have had their heads in the closet and haven't heard Microsoft is coming out with this Windows Phone 7 - the mythical vapor ware for a number of years now has been made public. Like many Silverlight geeks especially we are estatic as this phone now public will run Silverlight as the primary way to develop applications for it. On the downside if you installed the developer kit, the VM for the phone lacks pretty much... um... everything... no sensors,...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • the "additional drivers" shows nothing

  I started using Ubuntu 32 bit last week. I love it but I recognized there was a problem with the cooling system. the fan doesn't stop and slightly loud all the time (that wasn't the case while running with windows 7). I told a friend who claimed that it should be a drivers problem. My machine is dell inspiron n5110 and the official site recommends win 7 64 bit only. there's no support for linux. (the page showing the machine drivers and system recommendation I tried to fix the problem using the "additional drivers", it opens but it shows nothing (no drivers to activate, just the help and the close buttons) is there a way to fix this?

• Trying to Organise a Software Craftsman Pilgrimage

  As I have previously written, I am trying to organise a software craftsman pilgrimage. The idea is to donate some time working with quality developers so that we learn from each other. To be honest I am also trying to be the worst. “Always be the worst guy in every band you’re in.” Pat Metheny I ended up posting a message to both the software craftsmanship group and the Seattle Alt.NET group and I got a good response from both. I have had discussions with people based in: Seattle, New York, Long Island, Austin and Chicago. Over the next week I have to juggle my schedule and confirm the company(s) I will be spending time with, but the good news is it seems that I will not be left hanging.

• How to deal with project managers who micromanage?

  Perhaps I'm just naive, but when I try to decipher the wall of tasks I'm targeted to do over the course of a week, I just can't help but think whoever builds the project schedule needs to get some remedial training on basic project management. For example, I am assigned 13 tasks today, the shortest lasting .13 days (default time metric in Microsoft Project), and the longest lasting .75 days. I can't help but think that it is blatant micromanagement scheduling projects in sub 10 minute intervals. The effects of management are becoming evident in slipped tasks, resource assignment exceeding capacity by a factor of two at some points in time, and spending more time clearing tasks and figuring out what comes next than actually doing work. How can I convince the project manager to create tasks with larger duration and to see the larger picture?

• how to remove update repo that always fails

  A week or so ago I tried to add a new package repo that supposedly had a package I wanted. Unfortunately, the information about it was out of date, and I found that it fails to connect to it each time. I'd like to just remove the new repo, but I'm not sure how to do that.   I mentioned this awhile back on twitter, but UppercuT (UC) has support for Mercurial for versioning your assemblies. In the settings file, all you need to do it tell UC to use hg. When you build your assemblies, they will use the changeset number in the version, and in the informational version, you get the hash, just like you do when using Git. Pretty sweet. By the way, UC also supports .NET 4.0 as of last week. With this knowledge you shall build.

• Where do I get extra Compiz plugins?

  I installed Compiz on my laptop running Ubuntu 11.10 last week. The way I installed it was kind of different, I opened up a terminal and typed this command: sudo apt-cache search compiz After that, I installed all the packages that appeared in the terminal window. I enjoyed all the effects of Compiz like Paint fire on screen, Desktop Cube, but I can't help but noticing people having some extra plugins which I don't have, such as Atlantis, Snow, Tile and much more. Where are they getting all those plugins and how do I get them?

• Microsoft Interview Attire

  Hi all, I have an interview with Microsoft in a week and am wondering what to wear. The recruiter said Business Casual but that means very little to me. I'm sure some people here have already had interviews at MS. Anyone care to share what the interviewers were wearing? Would I be out of place with jeans and a polo shirt? Honestly, I feel more comfortable with casual clothes (some people are the opposite) but I don't want to look under dressed either. Thanks for the tips.

• Why is my google translate data not showing up in analytics?

  I have a google translate widget on my website with gaTrack set to true and the correct gaId, but no translate events show up in analytics under content Events Overview after a week of the widget being live. The code snippet below was auto generated by the translate website, and works fine on the site. • Oracle Open World 2012 SOA Presentations now available on OTN

  Oracle Open World 2012 has been over for a bit more than a week now and we're catching up with post-OOW tasks while still marvelling over what I remember as the best Open World yet. We had a steady traffic at our demo pods, all hands on labs were fully booked (stay tuned for those labs), sessions were very well visited and we met innumerable customers for discussions, feedback and Q&A. If you missed any of the sessions or want to share the information with your colleagues, you can go to the Oracle Open World website and search for the respective presentation.
