• VS2010 Launch Presentations

  Last week I was in Vegas to present at the DevConnections / VS2010 Launch event.  The show was well-attended and everybody I spoke to agreed it was educational and enjoyable.  My three talks were all on Wednesday, 14 April 2010, including one at 8am for which I was impressed to see a large turnout in attendance.   Pragmatic ASP.NET Tips, Tricks, and Tools My first session was on tips, tricks, and tools for ASP.NET developers.  This is a talk Ive given in past years, but which I refine every time.  I usually like to have a full session to devote to tools, and a separate talk just for Tips and Tricks, but for this show I was only given the one 75-minute slot, so I had to cut some materials to make things fit.  The talk went well, all the demos work, and the attendees seemed to enjoy it, and I like giving it, so hopefully I can continue to present on this topic in future DevConnections shows. Download the ASP.NET Tips, Tricks, and Tools slides and demos.   Whats New in ASP.NET MVC 2 My second talk of the day followed immediately after the Tips and Tricks talk, and was a brand new talk for me.  I have to throw out a thank-you to Phil for letting me see his MIX slide deck before he gave his talk, as that was a big help.  The official whats new document online is also worth checking out if youre interested in this subject.  Download the Whats New in ASP.NET MVC 2 slides and demos.   SOLIDify Your ASP.NET MVC 2 Application Just because youre using a ASP.NET MVC doesnt mean your code cant still end up being a big ball of mud.  This session describes a number of principles of software design that can help ensure applications remain loosely-coupled and malleable even as they age and increase in features and complexity.  This was my last talk of the day and did have one minor demo failure involving a database constraint.  Ive given this talk many times before, and in this case I had to fit it into a 60-minute timeslot, so Im not sure I had quite enough time to drive home all of the concepts to everyone in the audience.  That said, I did hear a number of positive comments on how the talk went, so thats encouraging. • PHP framework suggestions

  I'm going to be creating a site for a business with the following: Single Item purchases with Paypal, Google Checkout and Amazon Checkout Digital Downloads for members from a CDN Forum Voting on different items While that seems rather simple having to deal with the three different payment gateways is a big pain in the ass. Django has a great payment library which works for all three but I'm not able to find one for any of the PHP frameworks. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm posting here as suggested by someone at Stackoverflow.

• Interactive Fiction engine and Tech Support - has anyone done this? [on hold]

  I've always been a big fan of Interactive Fiction and have been wanting to try my hand at it for a while. I have a need to create a decision tree for my tech support group (L1-L3) and feel as though presenting a decision tree in the form of an IF game would be rather interesting and helpful. I plan on using Inform7, but am curious if anyone has done anything like this in the past. If so, can you present examples, links to examples, opinions? Thanks, Larry

• Install of mod_proxy to get ProxyPass to work

  I've been trying to follow these instructions, so that I could get the Citadel mail server to work alongside Apache, but I get an error when I try to restart Apache: Invalid command 'ProxyPass', ... I was told in the Apache docs that this is from the mod_proxy module, but apt-get install mod_proxy gives E: Couldn't find package mod_proxy, and I was unable to find it on the big list on the Apache site. What do I need to do to get the ProxyPass working in Ubuntu 10.04 TLS?

• Five Fake Sounds Engineered to Make Your Feel Better [Science]

  As objects in our environment (like cars, ATMs, and phones) have grown lighter and quieter scientists have been carefully engineering their sounds so that they continue to sound like we expect them to. Read on to see how. At the design blog Humans Invent they share five interesting ways that the world around us is being engineered so it sounds the way we expect it to. They start with the example of the car door. Years ago cars were almost entirely steel, the doors were weighty, and when you slammed them it sounded like one big hunk of steel locking into another big hunk of steel (which, in fact, it was). Newer cars are lighter but people still crave that substantial clunk. Humans Invent highlights the effect of consumer desire: A car door is essentially a hollow shell with parts placed inside it. Without careful design the door frame amplifies the rattling of mechanisms inside. Car companies know that if buyers don’t get a satisfying thud when they close the door, it dents their confidence in the entire vehicle. To produce the ideal clunk, car doors are designed to minimise the amount of high frequencies produced (we associate them with fragility and weakness) and emphasise low, bass-heavy frequencies that suggest solidity. The effect is achieved in a range of different ways – car companies have piled up hundreds of patents on the subject – but usually involves some form of dampener fitted in the door cavity. Locking mechanisms are also tailored to produce the right sort of click and the way seals make contact is precisely controlled. On average it takes 1.8 seconds to close a car door but in that time you’re witnessing a strange kind of symphony composed by engineers and designers whose goal is to reassure you that its rock solid. They mention lock mechanisms, something you may never have thought about. A friend of mine had a Ford Focus some years ago and that particular model had electric locks that, instead of giving a satisfying thunk or solid click, made this horrible gates-of-the-prison-buzzing sound that was completely unnerving.   I'm in charge of a relatively big corporate website (circa 95K pages) and need to perform a cookie audit. I can see cookies issued on a per-page basis with Chrome or Firefox console, but given the amount of pages I need a tool to automate the process. I tried to google for website cookie scanner but my search was unfruitful and found: either online tools which only scan the home page paid services (ex1, ex2) Does any of you know about a tool to scan an entire website and generate a report showing which cookies are being used and which page set them?
