  • How do you record how much memory an app is using on OS X

    I'm on a Mac Mini with OS X 10.8.2. I am an app developer, but in this case am building an app in C++, so I can not use Xcode for this question. I would like to track how much memory my app is using, but I don't want to manually record it. How do I do this. MORE INFO: I want to record it all day long. I will have the app running all day, so that I can compare peaks in memory. I am not opposed to 3rd party apps, as long as they are reliable. Thanks.

    This version adds support for SQL Server 2012 RC0 and fixes a few bugs with SQL History. Because of the support for regions in SSMS 2012 the regions and debug sections feature has been removed from SSMS Tools Pack for SQL Server 2012. The feature is still available for previous SSMS versions. In other news SSMS Tools Pack has won the SQL Magazine bronze award for best free tool of 2011.   • Dual pane file manager for Mac OS X

    Is there a good customizable dual-pane file manager for Mac like Total Commander / Far Manager in Windows, or like Krusader / Midnight Commander in Linux? I used to work on Windows for quite a while and mostly used Far Manager and sometimes Total Commander, then I switched to Ubuntu Linux and used Krusader, now I switched to Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and I'm having a hard time trying to find a good file manager... Many of the existing applications are trying to replace the Finder with "multimedia capabilities nobody cares about in file manager - IMHO" (Path Finder, ForkLift), some of them are almost good dual-pane file managers (couldn't remember examples), but none of them worked for me mostly because of one reason: I couldn't integrate my file/folder comparison utility (Araxis Merge for Mac) with them... The way it worked for me in Windows and Linux is that I was setting the cursor on one file in the left pane, then setting the right-pane cursor on another file in right pane, then I pressed a hotkey that launched Araxis Merge with those to files/folders comparison results. It was very easy to set up in Far Manager (Windows) and Krusader (Linux, actually in Linux I used "Meld" instead of Araxis Merge...) The tool I'm looking for doesn't necessarily has to be free...   • Xmonad on windows laptop

    I'm a Linux developer in the market for a laptop. 90% of my time is spent in Emacs, the terminal, and Google Chrome, and I want to use them within the excellent Xmonad tiling windows manager. Given these constraints, I can only see two options: Run Linux on a laptop Run Windows on the laptop, and spend all of my time working within a Linux VM. Years of experience suggest that the first option will take many frustrating hours and probably be suboptimal w.r.t. battery life, wifi, and fn keys like screen brightness or audio adjustment. For the second option, what would be the ideal setup? I've had a lot of luck with Cooperative Linux on my Samsung NC-10 netbook (Windows XP), but I would have to setup the X11 server myself. What about using VirtualBox (which includes the guest VM's GUI)? Has anyone tried this? Hardware-wise, I'm looking for something in the "Macbook Air killer" category; Samsung Series 9 laptop, Lenovo IdeaPad U300s, &c. (i.e., matte screen, 5h+ battery life, 3ish pound weight). Price is not a consideration; any suggestions?

  • What is a good third-party SMTP software for custom logging?

    I am currently using IIS 6 SMTP to send out some of our mail and I unfortunately amn't finding the logging performed by it to be verbose enough - nor am I able to customise it to the level I would find verbose enough. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a piece of third-party SMTP software which would allow for customisability of the logging down to the point where I can inject in my own columns or perform regular expressions on the outgoing message data or headers.

  • Fast extraction of a time range from syslog logfile?

    I've got a logfile in the standard syslog format. It looks like this, except with hundreds of lines per second: Jan 11 07:48:46 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:49:00 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:50:13 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:51:22 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:58:04 blahblahblah... It doesn't roll at exactly midnight, but it'll never have more than two days in it. I often have to extract a timeslice from this file. I'd like to write a general-purpose script for this, that I can call like: $ timegrep 22:30-02:00 /logs/something.log ...and have it pull out the lines from 22:30, onward across the midnight boundary, until 2am the next day. There are a few caveats: I don't want to have to bother typing the date(s) on the command line, just the times. The program should be smart enough to figure them out. The log date format doesn't include the year, so it should guess based on the current year, but nonetheless do the right thing around New Year's Day. I want it to be fast -- it should use the fact that the lines are in order to seek around in the file and use a binary search. Before I spend a bunch of time writing this, does it already exist?

  • Third-party Information Screen Opening Blank

    I'm working with a client who is trying to use our software, which accesses information (sends & receives) from a third-party website. When this client tries to access these pages, a window opens, as expected, but is completely blank and no error message is received. This is the first time I've seen this with many other clients successfully using this product, which leads me to believe that it has something to do with the settings on the computer somewhere, but cannot figure out what might be happening. Windows Server 2003 R2, Standard Edition, Service Pack 2. Firewall is already off. Tried AVG on & temporarily disabled.

    I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 in a physical x86-64 machine. Today Update Manager reminded me that there are some updates to install and I confirmed the action. I should had read the update list but I didn't. I can only remember there is an update about cups. After the upgrading, Update Manager requires a restart and I confirmed too. But after the restart, the computer can't start up. There are errors in the console. Begin: Running /scripts/init-premount ... done. Begin: Mounting root file system ...   • Command-line tool to deduplicate a single humongous file?

    I make regular snapshots of my VM using a nightly script. These backups are compressed using WinRAR and do shrink considerably, but I suspect it's not as efficient as had the file had been deduplicated first (just a hunch which I'm hoping to test). So instead of compressing the VHD itself, I would like to deduplicate the single file first, and then compress the output of the deduplicator. Is anyone aware of such a CLI tool?

  • Copy filename to clipboard

    I am looking for a Windows utility that can copy the currently selected filename, including the path, to the clipboard, ideally through the right-click menu. Some degree of flexibility would be useful, like the ability to copy just the filename, path+filename, filename minus extension, etc. This isn't essential, though, as long as it can copy the path+filename. Must be compatible with XP, Vista and Win7. Free and/or open source would be ideal. Thanks!

Some of the machines( we have no information regarding their ip, name and no physical access to the servers) in the network are connected to internet and they run an http proxy at some port say 3128. Is there a program which can be run on Windows or Linux which will give me the list of machines(ip addresses and ports if possible) acting as proxy servers?

  • How to repeat a POST request using Chrome's developer tools?

    Not sure if this is the right stack exchange to ask this, but here goes... I'm trying to wean myself off of Firebug, which has served me very well for a lot of years. One feature that seems to be missing in Chrome's dev tools is the ability to repeat an AJAX POST. In firebug I can right click on the request in the console and hit "Open in new tab" and the request is repeated exactly as it was originally sent. In Chrome, the same action just does a normal GET on the link, without any of the post data. Is there any way to repeat an AJAX POST in Chrome's dev tools?

  • Lightweight tool for viewing raw HTTP messages?

    Hi, I'm investigating differences in behaviour between a couple of Web servers. I need to see raw response data from the servers (i.e. before the response is de-chunked if it has "Transfer-Encoding:chunked" and before it is decompressed if it has "Content-Encoding:gzip"). I can find plenty of simple HTTP client that nearly do what I need (e.g. Poster, RESTClient), but they tend to decode the response one step too far. Network analysers like Wireshark give me what I need but are a bit heavyweight. Telnet is my best bet so far, but is a bit too simplistic (actions like capturing data or entering requests are a bit laborious). Can anyone recommend a good, lightweight tool for sending / viewing the raw data that constitute HTTP messages? Edit: I should add that I'm on Windows. Also, the tool would need to work both with remote and local servers.

  • How to see the properties of a DOM element as they change in realtime?

    JavaScript code can update the properties/attributes of DOM elements in real time by responding to events and so on. Here is an example. In the table on that page, move your mouse over the cells. Notice how they change color when the mouse is on them, and the color goes away when you move the mouse to another cell. Now, using Firefox or Chrome (but not IE, Opera, etc.), I want to examine the background color, expressed in RGB or hex or whatever, of the cells updated in real time, as the mouse cursor enters and leaves the region and causes the JS to do its thing. The behavior that I observe, currently, is that the Inspect Element functionality of both Firefox and Chrome does not update the value of the properties as they are updated by JavaScript. So, in order to view the latest value of the property, I have to inspect the element again, and it takes a momentary "snapshot" of the values. But since the values only change while I have the mouse on them, I can't take a snapshot of the value I want while my mouse cursor is over the cell, because I have to remove my mouse from the cell to select the "Inspect Element" item in the right-click list! If it is possible to have the values updated in real time using either Firefox or Chrome, or an extension, on any recent version of the software (up to the latest stable), please provide instructions for doing so.
