• Software restriction policies set in the registry don't update Local Group Policy

  The joys of a Samba domain... First off Domain Group policy can't be used until Samba 4 arrives. We need to setup Software Restriction Policies (SRPs) on most of the computers in our Samba domain and I would dearly like to automate this. (We are moving away from just disabling the Windows installer). The traditional way is to set SRPs using Local Group Policy (LGP) Computer Conf-Windows Settings-SRP but this involves visiting every machine as it can't be set using in NTConfig.pol. It is possible to attempt to create the SRPs directly in the registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Safer\CodeIdentifiers\262144\Paths\{30628f61-eb47-4d87-823b-6683a09eda87}] "LastModified"=hex(b):40,a2,94,09,b5,5d,ca,01 "Description"="" "SaferFlags"=dword:00000000 "ItemData"="C:\\location\\subfolder" SaferFlags DWORD seems to be what turns it on or off, but although this seems to work it does not update the Local Group Policy - SRPs still show as "No SRPs Defined". Where does the LGP store this setting - is it even in the registry and more importantly - Is there a cleverer way of setting up SRPs?

• Cannot exclude a path from basic auth when using a front controller script

  I have a small PHP/Apache2 web application wherein I'd like to do two seemingly incompatible operations: Route all requests through a single PHP script (a "front controller", if you will) Secure everything except API calls with HTTP basic authentication I can satisfy either requirement just fine in isolation, it's when I try to do both at once that I am blocked. For no good reason I'm trying to accomplish these requirements solely with Apache configuration. Here are the requirements stated as an example. A GET request for this URL: http://basic/api/listcars?max=10 should be sent through front.php without requiring basic auth. front.php will get /api/listcars?max=10 and do whatever it needs to with that. Here's what I think should work. In my /etc/hosts I added 127.0.0.1 basic and I am using this Apache config: <Location /> AuthType Basic AuthName "Home Secure" AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/passwords require valid-user </Location> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName basic DocumentRoot /var/www/basic <Directory /var/www/basic> <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /front.php/$1 [QSA,L] </IfModule> </Directory> <Location /api> Order deny,allow Allow from all Satisfy any </Location> </VirtualHost> But I still always get a HTTP 401: Authorization Required response. I can make it work by changing <Location /api> into <Location ~ /api> but this allows more than I want to past basic auth. I also tried changing the <Directory /var/www/basic> section into <Location />, but this doesn't work either (and it results in some strange values for PATH_TRANSLATED being passed to the script). I searched around and found many examples of selective exclusion of basic auth, but none that also incorporated a front controller. I could certainly do something like handle basic auth in the front controller, but if I can have Apache do that instead I'll be able to keep all authentication logic out of my PHP code. A friend suggested splitting this into two vhosts, which I know also works. This used to be two separate vhosts, actually. I'm using Apache 2.2.22 / PHP 5.3.10 on Ubuntu 12.04.

• Restart Fibre channel controller after blade bootup IBM HS bladecentre

  I have a remote system that needs to resume on startup. If the system is simply powered on then the blades boot before the SAN is online and then the only thing you can do is restart the systems. Is it possible to restart the fibre channel controller? That way I could have a system restart the controller after boot, connect to the SAN and then restart all servers requiring SAN information? Please note that I'm not a sys admin, just shooting for ideas to get a clean startup to work, apologies if my terminology is wrong.

• Custom IIdentity and passing data from an attribute to a controller

  Here's my scenario: I've successfully created a custom IIdentity that I pass to a GenericPrincipal. When I access that IIdentity in my controller I have to cast the IIdentity in order to use the custom properties. example: public ActionResult Test() { MyCustomIdentity identity = (MyCustomIdentity)User.Identity; int userID = identity.UserID; ...etc... } Since I need to do this casting for nearly every action I would like to wrap this functionality in an ActionFilterAttribute. I can't do it in the controller's constructor because the context isn't initialized yet. My thought would be to have the ActionFilterAttribute populate a private property on the controller that I can use in each action method. example: public class TestController : Controller { private MyCustomIdentity identity; [CastCustomIdentity] public ActionResult() { int userID = identity.UserID; ...etc... } } Question: Is this possible and how? Is there a better solution? I've racked my brain trying to figure out how to pass public properties that are populated in an attribute to the controller and I can't get it.

• Intel 520 SSD drives not working with lsi controller on VMware esxi 5

  We have a problem with our LSI 9266 controller. LSI have vmware drivers which normally show the health status of connected drives, raid controller, battery etc from within the vSphere Client. This driver also allows connectivity from the LSI MSM utility from a windows workstation. The problem is as soon as I connect my intel 520 SSD drives the health status in the vsphere client disappears, also we lose connectivity via the LSI MSM utlity. Any other drives we test are fine, 1TB SAS drives, other SSD drives etc are all OK. The Intel drives are on the compatability list and are supported by LSI but dont work with the VMware driver. If I install a windows OS on the physical server we have no problems. I have logged a ticket with LSI but they havent been very helpful. I am trying to find other people that may have had the same issue and maybe even a fix

• Jquery html grab + calling a controller action using javascript (ruby on rails)

  Preface: I consider myself "slightly effective" in ruby on rails, and a complete novice in javascript. Also, yes, I have installed jQuery and associated plugins instead of the default Prototype library. I am in a situation where I am pulling in a table from off-site in an iframe (which is taking care of all internal JS for me) such that when a part of the table is clicked, a td will gain the class "active." What I would like to do is take this info (I'm assuming I can get it in a string format), and pass it to a method (in my controller, I'm assuming) which will parse the html, pull out the pertinent info, and then call a creation method in the same controller with the parsed info, the end result being a new item in that table. What I have so far is javascript which I believe is correct so far: <script type="text/javascript"> var ImportInfo = function() { var info = $('td.active').html(); // call controller action which parses the given string, //checks for existence in database, and adds new row if needed } $("#Import").click(ImportInfo); </script> and, of course, a button with id="ImportLocation." I have looked at this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1334447/using-jquery-to-call-a-controller-action but am somewhat unsure as to how to call a controller action to pass the contents of the td as a string. Is this doable with the jQuery post method?

However I still want to have the URLs look like /module/4711/ therefore I added this to my routes.rb: map.connect '/module/:module_id', :controller => 'xpmodule', :action => 'index' map.connect '/module/:module_id/subscribe', :controller => 'xpmodule', :action => 'subscribe' Now I want to test this controller with Rspec: describe XpmoduleController do fixtures :xpmodules context "index" do it "should assign the current xpmodule" do xpm = mock_model(Xpmodule) Xpmodule.should_receive(:find).and_return(xpm) get "index" assigns[:xpmodule].should be_an_instance_of(Xpmodule) end end end for which I get No route matches {:action=>"index", :controller=>"xpmodule"}. Which of course is sort-of right, but I don't want to add this route just for testing purposes. Is there a way to tell Rspec to call a different URL in get?

  Recently we renamed our domain from single domain name COMPANY to COMPANY.LOCAL due to multiple problems. However now I get this information from BPA. Issue: The Active Directory integrated DNS zone _msdcs.COMPANY.LOCAL was not found. Impact: DNS queries for the Active Directory integrated zone _msdcs.COMPANY.LOCAL might fail. Resolution: Restore the Active Directory integrated DNS zone _msdcs.COMPANY.LOCAL. Clearly there is no _msdcs.COMPANY.LOCAL as there is only old one _msdcs.COMPANY however when i check under COMPANY there is no _msdsc, but there is one when i check inside COMPANY.LOCAL. So it seems to me that _msdcs.COMPANY.LOCAL should use the one that is inside COMPANY.LOCAL? Should it not? Should I try to recreate it by hand (since it wasn't created on domain rename).

• Linux Mint 14 severe overheating

  I've tried switching to Mint (it was Mint 12) about 6 months ago, but failed to do it due to enormous overheating which made it virtually impossible to run any applications more complex than Gedit. Time had passed, and now I'm back again with Mint 14, but feeling way more determined. • Check if user password input is valid in Powershell script

  I am working with a Powershell script that adds scheduled tasks to systems in our domain. When I run this script, it will prompt me for my password. I sometimes fat finger the password and the process starts, which locks out my account. Is there a way to verify my credentials to make sure that what I typed in will validate with the Domain? I'd like to find a way to query the Domain controller. I've done some Google searches and I should be able to do a WMI query and trap for an error. I would like to avoid that style of validation if possible. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• gpupdate failing when using Samba 4 AD DC

  I have a Samba 4 AD domain running with 2 DCs on Centos 6.5, with a named DNS backend. I have multiple Windows 7 machines joined to this domain, which is fine. However, I can't get GPOs to apply. When running gpupdate, I get the following output The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \\sysvol\\Policies{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini Obviously, you don't normally see what it's trying to connect to when it's successful, but I would have thought the first place shows up, I should be seeing So, what governs what data gets put in between those angle brackets? If it is just supposed to be the domain, then what else could be going wrong? Thanks in advance for any help.

  So what we are looking for is the ability to do the following: We have an application that can load certain settings based on the domain that it is being accessed from. So if you come from xyz.com we show a different logo and if you come from abc.com we show a different logo. The code is the same, running from same server just detects the domain on the run Now we want to get a dedicated server (any suggestions?) that will enable us to point all the doamins that we want to this server (we change the DNS for the domains to that of our server) and then when the user goes to a certain domain they run the same application. Now as far as I can understand we will need to create a "VirtualHost" in apache to handle this. Can we create a wildcard virtualhost that catches all the domains? I am not an expert with Apache at all. So please forgive if this comes out to be a silly question. Any detailed help would be great. Thanks

• Laptop wakes from sleep, once, due to audio controller (Windows 7)

  The laptop is a recent Dell XPS 15z and the problem is as follows (reproducible about 90% of tries): put laptop to sleep using either Start-Sleep or closing the lid laptop goes to sleep after about 5 seconds, but instantly wakes again showing a black screen (touching the keyboard or moving the mouse shows the login screen one normally gets after wake) login again, put laptop to sleep latop stays in sleep mode output of powercfg -lastwake after the first instant wake shows the audio controller is responsible. Why would that be, why only the first try, and how to fix this?   I had a DC and Exchange 2010 installed on the same machine. I removed the DC role, and Exchange server went crazy. I tried to install the DC role again to fix the problem but ran into this error when running DCPROMO: Active Directory Domain Services could not create the NTDS Settings object for this Active Directory Domain Controller CN=NTDS Settings,CN=DC1,CN=Servers,CN=Manukau,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=AccessGroupnz,DC=com on the remote AD DC Server1.AccessGroupnz.com. Ensure the provided network credentials have sufficient permissions. "The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure." Do you think I need to run this in an elevated command prompt, or change credentials somewhere to domain admin? Or is it something else?

  I have my primary domain with wildcard subdomains setup already. username.maindomain.com and maindomain.com I want to provide my users with additional domains that they can select. additional1.com, additional2.com, additional3.com... These additional domains would also need to support wildcard subdomains (as the subdomains route to a username). Anyone know how to properly configure this in DNS and VirtualHost config? Currently I have the additional domains as A records pointing to the same IP as my main domain (with a wildcard subdomain A record for each as well). In my VirtualHost config I am placing the additional domain names in the ServerAlias directive. Let me know if any more detail is needed.

  How can I create a routing structure for a project management application where there are discrete controllers for all the relevant pieces such as TaskController, DocumentController etc and an Over arching controller. I would essentially like a structure like: http://server/Project/123/Task http://server/Project/123/Document I am using mvc1 so I have no access to areas etc. The project section will have a separate master page for project controllers such as task, document etc with a dfferent menu navigaton.   I'm having a problem getting a controller method that returns a JsonResult to accept parameters passed via the JQuery getJSON method. The code I’m working on works fine when the second parameter ("data") of the getJSON method call is null. But when I attempt to pass in a value there, it seems as if the controller method never even gets called. In this example case, I just want to use an integer. The getJSON call that works fine looks like this: $.getJSON(”/News/ListNewsJson/”, null, ListNews_OnReturn); The controller method is like this: public JsonResult ListNewsJson(int? id) { … return Json(toReturn); } By putting a breakpoint in the ListNewsJson method, I see that this method gets called when the data parameter of getJSON is null, but when I replace it with value, such as, say, 3: $.getJSON(”/News/ListNewsJson/”, 3, ListNews_OnReturn); … the controller method/breakpoint is never hit. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I should also mention that the controller method works fine if I manually go to the address via my browser ("/News/ListNewsJson/3").

I know how to solve this: Stop the Computer Browser service on clients, but I don't know how to avoid this since the problem comes back every time I add a new client and I forget to stop the Computer Browser service. Error message: The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer [computer] that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{#######-####-####-#. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced. Is there an configuration of the server to avoid this problem?

• My linux server takes more than an hour to boot. Suggestions?

  I am building a CentOS 5.4 system that boots off a compact flash card using a card reader that emulates an IDE drive. It literally takes about an hour to boot. The ultra-slow part occurs when Grub is loading the kernel. Once that's done, the rest of the boot process only takes about a minute to get to a login prompt. Does anyone have any suggestions? I suspect that it may have to do with UDMA. Everything IDE-related in my BIOS seems to checkout. The read performance hdparm is telling me 1.77 MB/s. Ouch! • Rspec stubing view for anonymous controller

  I'm trying to test a method on the application controller that will be used as a before filter. To do this I have setup an anonymous controller in my test with the before filter applied to ensure that it functions correctly. The test currently looks like this: describe ApplicationController do controller do before_filter :authenticated def index end end describe "user authenticated" do let(:session_id){"session_id"} let(:user){OpenStruct.new(:email => "[email protected]", :name => "Colin Gemmell")} before do request.cookies[:session_id] = session_id UserSession.stub!(:find).with(session_id).and_return(user) get :index end it { should assign_to(:user){user} } end end And the application controller is like this: class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base protect_from_forgery def authenticated @user = nil end end My problem is when ever I run the test I'm getting the following error 1) ApplicationController user authenticated Failure/Error: get :index ActionView::MissingTemplate: Missing template stub_resources/index with {:handlers=>[:erb, :rjs, :builder, :rhtml, :rxml, :haml], :formats=>[:html], :locale=>[:en, :en]} in view paths "#<RSpec::Rails::ViewRendering::PathSetDelegatorResolver:0x984f310>" According to the docs the view is not rendered when running controller tests however this points to no stub existing for this action (which is understandable as the view doesn't exist) Anyone have a clue how to solve this problem or stub the view out. • IIS7 & WIndows Authentication - authenticating to the wrong domain

  I have an IIS 7 web app that is using Windows authentication. Currently, everything is set up correctly based on all that I've been able to find on the web. What's happening is when a user tries to get to that domain, they see the authentication popup, but they are being requested to authenticate to "servername.domain" instead of just the domain .... How do I get IIS 7 (or the browser for that matter) to realize that windows authentication should be to the domain, not to the machine hosting the IIS 7 instance?? Thanks, Steve G.
