• Use DivX settings to encode to mp4 with ffmpeg

  I'm used to use VirtualDub to encode a video to AVI container with DivX-codec (and MP3 for audio). Now I'm planning to use ffmpeg to encode videos to MP4 container with h264-codec. What I've figured out is that I need to use libx264 and one of those presets to make anything work. However, I'm amazed about the video bitrate ffmpeg uses for encoding. What I currently have is this little batch file: @ECHO OFF SETLOCAL SET IN=source.avs SET FFMPEG_PATH=C:\Program Files (x86)\ffmpeg SET PRESET=-fpre "%FFMPEG_PATH%\presets\libx264-lossless_slow.ffpreset" SET AUDIO=-acodec libmp3lame -ab 128000 SET VIDEO=-vcodec libx264 -vb 1978000 "%FFMPEG_PATH%\ffmpeg.exe" -i %IN% %AUDIO% %VIDEO% %PRESET% test.mp4 ENDLOCAL With this I tell ffmpeg to use 1978k as the bitrate, but ffmpeg uses 15000k+! I tried other presets, but they don't use my specified bitrate. Just in case you wonder how I came up with the 1978000, I'm using this formula which I found valid for DivX-files (I'm guessing the bitrate won't change that much for h264): width * height * 25 * 0.22 / 1000 I'm not sure if the 0.22 correlates with the CRF somehow. Overall I forgot to say the I will use a two-pass scenario, which is why I don't use the CRF here. I will try to read more about this. Currently I'm just trying to get something running that shows me that I'm doing something right (ffmpeg isn't the easiest tool to understand ;)).   I am using Windows XP. My hard drive (Seagate 160gig Barracuda) is about to fail. Its already developed bad sectors and it seems to get worse everyday. Data transfer mode is down to PIO mode 2, chkdsk runs every now and then, registry and important windows files get corrupted and I spend 30-60 minutes running chkdsk /f /r from the recovery console. I've got a replacement (Seagate 5000gig Barracuda) and now i want to transfer each and every thing on to the new drive. I don't want to go through windows and software installation, I spent ages getting all those software installed and configured on that hard drive. Need advice: whats the best way to transfer everything onto the new drive so that it behaves just like the old one. And are there any "gotchas".

  I'm trying to set the Language for Non-Unicode Programs from English to Japanese (I'm using Windows XP SP 3), but it won't let me. It looks like I've got the East Asian Language packs installed, but when I select "Japanese" from the drop-down box and hit "Apply" I get an error that says "Setup was unable to install the chosen locale. Please contact your system administrator". I'm already logged in as the administrator, and I've restarted several times but it still won't let me. Can anyone give me an idea as to how to solve this problem? Reinstalling Windows is absolutely out of the question.

Running the script from the terminal works (although I had to change its permissions first), but clicking on a mailto: link does nothing. Note: I am using the Chromium Daily Builds for my browser. I would mailto: links in all applications to point to gmail, not just the ones that I click on in my browser.

• XenServer VM's lose network settings

  We deploy virtual machines using Citrix XenServer 6.0 for our clients. Two seperate clients experience the same issue: when a Server 2008 virtual machine is restarted, the static IP addresses (network address, subnet, gateway, primary DNS) don't appear to apply correctly as the IP's cannot be pinged, network services cannot be accessed etc. The issue is resolved by manually switching the network adapters to DHCP, then re-setting them to the original static IP's. While not a major issue, it's a pain when restarting servers due to Windows Updates, plus iSCSI drives need to be manually connected to Windows again via iSCSI Initiator. We have tried removed the network adapters from the virtual machine under XenCentre but without luck. Anyone experienced similar issues?

• Malware Defense Shows Up in PlayOn Settings/Logs Although System Has Been Thoroughly Cleaned

  I was hit really hard by some nasty malware: Malware Defense. I was doing something I should not have been doing when I got it (surfing Pirate Bay for TV shows). It locked up my system and I had to reboot in safe mode. I was able to shut down the process and remove it using a malware killer tool. I then installed, after my machine was cleaned up a bit, Clamwin, Malwarebytes, and another AV tool. I cleaned the heck out of my system. Simultaneously, while this was going on, I was having trouble with my media-server, PlayOn. This tool is great, but has some bugs. One in particular is that it will not function well with AV software running. I found a way to allow the new AV software to run while using PlayOn, but it still says I have Malware Defense on. Firstly, Malware Defense is long gone. I cleaned all remnants from my registry and scoured my system with the above tools multiple times. PlayOn is getting some information that I have this crap installed on my system, but it's not. The system runs OK, but not optimally. I have a feeling it is causing my streaming to be interrupted sometimes. How is it that I can't even find Malware Defense on my system if I tried but yet somehow PlayOn is getting a finger print of it somewhere? I have gone back and forth with MediaMall to no avail. I kind of just gave up, because the streaming works OK. BTW, I also uninstalled/reinstalled PlayOn several times, reverted back to previous versions, etc. The only thing I haven't done is reformat my disk and reinstall Windows. I really don't want to do this if there is another way to remove this little print. Any ideas?

  I have autoindent enabled in my .vimrc file but have run into an annoying bug/feature. For example, when I'm tabbed in 3 times, and I hit return, the new line is also tabbed in 3 times. Then when I hit enter again, that new line is also indented 3 times, as it should. The problem occurs when I go back up to the previous line (the first of the 2 new lines). VIM automatically removes the whitespace because it saw it as an empty line. Is there a way to disable this from happening?   I'm looking for a way to track myself and receive quality data upon which I can write future scripts/programs. For example, I use Google Reader a lot. I'd like to track the hrefs that garner my clicks. Further, I'd like to drop all of the words of each href into a database where they can be stacked in a hierarchical manner. At the end of the week I want to know that "Ubuntu" garnered 448 clicks and "Cheetos" garnered 2. :) That's just one example... I'd like this tracking and data-collecting to extend beyond my browser.   Hello All, I am banging my head against the wall on this one. I followed the MX setup tutorials for Google Mail and it didn't work. I can send email from google apps mail but I can not recieve any email. It gives me the following error: Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 #5.1.0 Address rejected [email protected] Now I already tried following the slicehost MX article instructions straight as well and they did not work out for me. The domain has already been verified by google and it says the email is activated from their end. Any help would be appreciated : )

• Nginx, HAproxy, Unicorn, Rails and Node settings

  Our application is currently only a "regular" web app, with no fancy things like streaming HTTP or websockets. It's mostly a Rails app, served by a few (20 on 2 machines) Unicorn workers, proxied by a venerable nginx server which deals with load balancing. This has been working quite well for the past year and the app now serves between 400 and 800 requests per second at any point during the day. We're soon releasing 2 new APIs, which are both served by a Node application : a websocket one, as well as a long polling HTTP one. (the fancy thing like the Twitter streaming API where HTTP connections never end). They both use the same port on node and since the node app is stateless, we can certainly deploy a few of them to handle the traffic. The app (node) is now deployed in 5 instances and are now listening on 5 different 'private' ports on the same host. We need to put something in front of them to load balance, but also something that is able to deal with sockets (either websocket or HTTP streaming) which are intended to stay 'up' for days. The question is then : what? I read somewhere that HAProxy does a better job than Nginx at this. What do you recommend?

Users are closing the rdc before these appear: The Microsoft solution involves the creation of the KeepProgressLevel registry entry along with a value of 1 for "pause on errors." I have implemented this across the domain for this problem, yet these 2 VM's continue to have the prompts. Today, I experimented by changing the KeepProgressLevel option to 0. This is not one of the options given by MS, yet I stopped getting the prompts. Can anyone tell me what I've done by setting the value to 0? Have I basically turned off the feature as if the KeepProgressLevel entry is gone? If so, why no more prompts? I did notice during logoff that there is a red x and error message, yet no prompt.

• TeamViewer: How to disable color dithering for low-bit-depth screen settings

  I am using Terminal Services and TeamViewer a lot to access other computers, partly over slow networks. The problem described below is not affected by which of the two remote access services I am using. When accessing Windows 7 Professional machines, a great deal of text is hard to read as the background is dithered. Even for exactly the same colors, Windows 2003 does not seem to dither at all, but to choose the closest available color. I strongly prefer the latter, as I don't care for the exact colors, I just want to be able to read easily. I am not sure whether this is operating system-related. The programs on the remote systems do not allow me to change the color choices for the various backgrounds to anything sane. Is there a way to disable this color dithering using some target operating system setting that will do the trick for both Terminal Services and TeamViewer?
