  • How to build form completion/document merge application with Winforms or WPF?

    I need to build an application that accepts user input data (such as name, address, amount, etc.) and then merges it with a pre-loaded document template (order form) and then prints this merged document. I can use Windows Forms or WPF for this project. Any suggestions on how best to approach this? I'm experienced with Winforms development, but don't have any idea how to handle merging the data to the document for printing.

  • Automatically registering "commands" for a command line program in python

    I would like to develop a command-line program that can process and give "help" for subcommands. To be concrete, say I have a single script called "cgent" and I would like to have subcommands "abc", "def", and "xyz" execute and accept the rest of the sys.args for processing by optparse. cgent abc [options] cgent help abc .... All of this is straightforward if I hard-code the subcommand names. However, I would like to be able to continue to add subcommands by adding a class or module (?). This is similar to the idea that is used by web frameworks for adding controllers, for example. I have tried digging through pylons to see if I can recreate what is done there, but I have not unravelled the logic. Any suggestions on how to do this? Thanks, Sean

  • Can I use GNU Screen completely transparently/automatically?

    Screen is amazing, of course, but I don't want to have to think about it. I often ssh to a machine, start doing a bunch of stuff, and then think "gosh, I wish I had thought to start a screen session before doing all that so I could reconnect to this from home later". I'd like to have screen automatically started whenever I log in to a machine. And when I get disconnected, I want to be able to immediately and simply reconnect without fussing with "screen -ls" and "screen -dr". I have a script that implements one solution to this problem which I'll post as an answer. I'm interested to see other approaches.

  • Controlling rsync with Python?

    I've been wanting to write a python script that would run several instances of rsync in sequence for backing up data to a different computer. At the moment I just have this text file with the commands I use and I've just been copy-pasting them into the terminal, and it seems kinda silly. I want to be able to use python to do this for me. I know very vaguely how to use subprocess.popen, but I have no clue how to get python to interact with rsync directly, like for entering my password for me. Can python do that? Something like: if theProccess.proccessResponse == "Password:" : theProccess.respond(string) Or is the best that I can do is just have it, or even a bash script, just run the rsyncs in sequence and have to type my password in over and over again?   • How to use condition in a TestGen4Web script for a child popup window?

    I have TestGen4Web script for automating testing on a web-based user interface that has a popup window (hey i didn't write that ui..). In order to write a complete test script that branches the flow based on the some presence of some content in the popup window, I need to write a simple if condition that does something like if document.getElementById("xyz").value - that will run on the popup window and not the parent window. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? currently, the condition fails because it runs on the parent window. Also, how to extract some text from the dom and spit it out to a file at the end of the test?

  • Zend Framework 1.1 Modules setup

    i used zend_tool to setup a project then to create module blog with index controller etc but i guess the default config setup by zend_tool does not work with modules so i edited it resources.frontController.moduleDirectory = APPLICATION_PATH "/modules" resources.frontController.moduleDirectoryControllerName = "controllers" i guess these are required for modules? also i moved the folders, controllers, models, views into the modules/ folder but i get a blank screen when i try to go to http://servername which shld load Default module's index controller and action. even if i try to go http://servername/nonexistentpage it also shows a blank screen instead of a 404

  • jquery/ajax load new content when available

    I know this is quite a vague question -- sorry about that. If I have a forum, shoutbox or something similar where users enter and submit data, running on PHP and MySQL, what is the best way to have the newly submitted content automatically display on the page for all users when it is submitted? Much like a live newsfeed, if you like... The effect sort-of works here at stackoverflow, when you are answering a question you are told when new answer is submitted. I want to test for newly submitted content and then display it automatically. Any suggestions? Many thanks :)

  • Are there any FTP programs which can automatically send the contents of a folder to a remote server?

    Are there any FTP programs which can automatically copy (or rather 'move') the contents of a folder to a remote server? I have of course googled this but only really found one or two ancient products which look really clunky and unmaintained. I was wondering if there's a way to do this from the command line or any better solution to the base problem. In more detail, new files get written to a folder every few hours. These new files need to be FTP'd elsewhere and then deleted. Mirroring or synchonisation systems are probably out of the picture as we need to delete the source files once they've been successfully transferred. If it's easier, the 'solution' could pull the files off the server (rather than the server pushing them to the client). The computers will both be Windows OS.

    Hi, I'm having a VARIANT with its type set to VT_R8. Subsequently I need to change its type to VT_BSTR. I would like know whether there is a way of resetting a VARIANT status. Thus, I noticed that every time I set value to the VARIANT (in my case, its double) , VARIANT itself set its bstrVal member to a bad pointer, even though I set bstrVal member to NULL at the initialization of VARIANT. Why such thing is happening ? Is it safe to use a VARIANT as structure where both dbVal and bstrVal member are set ? Please clarify, thank you.

    Some of my users download several pdf files from an internet website regularly. They'd like to automate the process to save a few minutes every day, and most importantly, to minimize errors. I tried mechanize but failed as mechanize does not process javascripts. Since the download links in the remote site are all triggered by javescript, I am looking for solutions to automate the browser itself.   • How can I automate new system provisioning with scripts under Mac OS X 10.6?

    I've been working on this for days but simply cannot find the correct references to make it work. The idea is to have a script that will baseline newly purchased Macs that comes into the company with basic stuffs like set autologin to off, create a new admin user (for remote admins to access for support, set password to unlock screensaver and etc) . Sample list for baseline that admins have to do on each new machine: Click the Login Options button Set Automatic Login: OFF Check: Show the Restart, Sleep, and Shutdown buttons Uncheck: Show input menu in login window Uncheck: Show password hints Uncheck: Use voice over in the login window Check: Show fast user switching menu as Short Name (note: this is only part of a long list to do on each machine) I've managed to find some references to make some parts work. Like autologin can be unset with: defaults write /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences com.apple.userspref.DisableAutoLogin -bool TRUE and I've kinda found ways to muscle in a new user creation (including prompts) with AppleScript and shell commands. But generally its tough finding ways to do somewhat simple things like turn on password to get out of screensaver or to allow fast user switching. References are either too limited or just no where to be seen (e.g. I can unset autologin via cli but the very next setting on the system preference "show restart, sleep and shutdown buttons" is somewhere else and I can't find any command line to make it set) Does anyone have any ideas on a list, document, reference or anything of where each setting on the system resides so that I can be pointed to make it work? or maybe sample scripts for the above example... My thanks for reading thus far—a huge thank you for whoever that has any info on the above.

    Using urllib2, we can get the http response from a web server. If that server simply holds a list of files, we could parse through the files and download each individually. However, I'm not sure what the easiest, most pythonic way to parse through the files would be. When you get a whole http response of the generic file server list, through urllib2's urlopen() method, how can we neatly download each file?

  • Unit Tests as a learning tool - a good idea?

    I'm interested in ways and means for learning (a) programming language(s) efficiently. I believe that using Unit Test concepts and infrastructure early in that process is a good thing, even better than starting with "Hello world". Why: To write a decent program even for a toy/restricted problem in a new language, you'll have to master many heterogenous concepts (control flow & variables & IO ...), you are tempted to glance over details just to get your program 'to work'. Putting (your understanding of) the facts about the new language in assertions with good descriptions (=success messages) enforces thinking thru/clearness/precision. Grouping topics and adding assertions to such groups is much easier than incorporation features from the 2. chapter of your "Learning X" book to your chapter 1 program. Why not: 'Real' Unit Tests are meant to output "1234 tests ok; 1 failure: saveWorld() chokes on negative input"; 'didactic' Unit Tests should output relevant facts about the new language like perl6 10-string.t # ### p5chop ... ok 13 - p5chop( "cbä" ) returns "ä" ok 14 - after that, victim is changed to "cb" # ### (p6) chop ... ok 27 - (p6) chop( "cbä" ) returns chopped copy: "cb" ok 18 - after that, victim is unchanged: "cbä" # ### chomp ... So (mis?)using Unit Tests may be counterproductive - practicing actions while learning you wouldn't use professionally. How: Writing 'didactic' Unit Tests in languages with lightweight testing systems (Perl 5/6) is easy; (mis?)using more elaborate systems (JUnit, CppUnit) may be not worth the effort or not suitable for a person just starting with a new language. So Is using Unit Tests as a learning tool a bad idea? Can the Unit Test tool(s) of your favourite language(s) used didactically? Should implementation details (eventually) be discussed here or over at stackoverflow.com?

    The Ubuntu Heads-Up Display (HUD) - you love it or you hate it. Personally I rather like a classic desktop, so I use Xfce or GNOME-fork Cinnamon, and I'd like to keep those menu's where they are. But the HUD is pretty awesome when your menus are complex and you forgot where an option sits. This makes that search trick very interesting. I know the HUD is Unity specific. I am looking for a HUD-like tool to complement the menu in shells other than Unity. There is Appmenu Runner for KDE that does this. There is also appmenu-qt for KDE. Problem with the above is that it uses KDE libs, and it only works for KDE apps. This is Linux, there aught to be something like this for GNOME/GTK apps, right? Looking for any tool that can search the menus. I already use(d) Synapse, Kupfer and GNOME Do, but those are simply app-launchers (with some tricks). Something like that would suffice if only they included searching the menus for the currently focused application. The HUD allows users to activate menu items by typing part of the name. It uses a fuzzy search algorithm that will highlight partial matches. It can match menu items that are multiple layers deep in an application's menu hierarchy. The feature, which replaces traditional menu accelerators, is activated by pressing the alt key.   • How do I remove the tool tips on the launch bar?

    The title is the question. These tool tips stay until I try to click past them. They're annoying since they constantly pop up and block the view of what I'm trying to do. Unfortunately I need the launch bar because Ubuntu is running on VMware and the console does not allow me to use the keyboard for switching tasks (to my knowledge). How do I disable them? I'd post an image as an example, but this site will not let me. UPDATE: unity 5.16.0 UPDATE 2: I discovered that this may only be a problem with users who run Ubuntu on a full screen VMware console that is situated on the right monitor. When the mouse is moved to the left monitor the tooltips popup and remain until the mouse is clicked twice in the VMware console window to make it active. Unfortunately my problem is one involving a rare situation I think. However, I'd love to be able to disable these tool tips if possible. It would also be nice if new features were added that can allow further customization of the launch bar.

  • Is there a product planning tool that has these specific features? [closed]

    I am working on a web startup in the early stages, and we are struggling a bit to manage the scope and scheduling of our product. We have loads of high-level features in the pipeline, but we need a good way of scheduling them for release iterations and breaking them into actual tasks that can be scheduled (that could be a separate tool, but integration would be preferred). I would say that our product can be pretty cleanly divided into "aspects", and we want to be able to separate features by the aspect to which they apply. Perhaps most importantly, it should be really simple to create and move features between target release points. We don't have physical space for a war room type setup, so whatever we settle upon should ideally have a cloud-type web interface. Right now, we're using Excel to make a grid of product aspects vs. target releases, and we store features at the intersections. But this is not providing a good way of indexing tasks to those features or being able to move them around. I would much rather have something that automates the grid overview. I'm less interested in something that helps with low-level scheduling than I am in something that is good at organizing the product plan at the long-term, high-level view. Is there a product planning tool out there that matches these specifications?

  • SQL SERVER – Introduction to Adaptive ETL Tool – How adaptive is your ETL?

    I am often reminded by the fact that BI/data warehousing infrastructure is very brittle and not very adaptive to change. There are lots of basic use cases where data needs to be frequently loaded into SQL Server or another database. What I have found is that as long as the sources and targets stay the same, SSIS or any other ETL tool for that matter does a pretty good job handling these types of scenarios. But what happens when you are faced with more challenging scenarios, where the data formats and possibly the data types of the source data are changing from customer to customer?  Let’s examine a real life situation where a health management company receives claims data from their customers in various source formats. Even though this company supplied all their customers with the same claims forms, they ended up building one-off ETL applications to process the claims for each customer. Why, you ask? Well, it turned out that the claims data from various regional hospitals they needed to process had slightly different data formats, e.g. “integer” versus “string” data field definitions.  Moreover the data itself was represented with slight nuances, e.g. “0001124” or “1124” or “0000001124” to represent a particular account number, which forced them, as I eluded above, to build new ETL processes for each customer in order to overcome the inconsistencies in the various claims forms.  As a result, they experienced a lot of redundancy in these ETL processes and recognized quickly that their system would become more difficult to maintain over time. So imagine for a moment that you could use an ETL tool that helps you abstract the data formats so that your ETL transformation process becomes more reusable. Imagine that one claims form represents a data item as a string – acc_no(varchar) – while a second claims form represents the same data item as an integer – account_no(integer). This would break your traditional ETL process as the data mappings are hard-wired.  But in a world of abstracted definitions, all you need to do is create parallel data mappings to a common data representation used within your ETL application; that is, map both external data fields to a common attribute whose name and type remain unchanged within the application. acc_no(varchar) is mapped to account_number(integer) expressor Studio first claim form schema mapping account_no(integer) is also mapped to account_number(integer) expressor Studio second claim form schema mapping All the data processing logic that follows manipulates the data as an integer value named account_number. Well, these are the kind of problems that that the expressor data integration solution automates for you.  I’ve been following them since last year and encourage you to check them out by downloading their free expressor Studio ETL software.
