• A Kingdom To Conquer: Character Sketches

  Still not 100% sold on my title so it remains a working title for now, but here’s a series of character sketches I’ve done for a turn based strategy game I’m playing at making. I’ve been sketching these on various pieces of paper throughout the last two weeks and just finished the last of them today (my plan was for 16 different types of units and well, now I have them, so I consider that done!).                    Pretty rough sketches for now, but I’m pretty happy with the art style overall. I was wrestling for quite a while just HOW I wanted the game to look and then I finally stumbled across Art Baltazar and I was like, THAT’S IT! There’s a few characters I need to re-do a bit more, I feel they’re a bit TOO much like some of the characters that inspired them but I’m happy that the ideas are finally sketched out. I’ve also been playing a bit in InkScape working on making these guys digital. A pretty new experience for me since I’m not used to working with vector images but I think I’ll get the hang of it. Here’s the Knight all vectorized. Now if I could just start making some progress on the actual game itself…

• New ZFSSA code release - April 2012

  A new version of the ZFSSA code was released over the weekend. In case you have missed a few, we are now on code 2011.1.2.1. This minor update is very important for our friends with the older SAS1 cards on the older 7x10 systems. This 2.1 minor release was made specifically for them, and fixes the issue that their SAS1 card had with the last major release. They can now go ahead and upgrade straight from the 2010.Q3.2.1 code directly to 2011.1.2.1. If you are on a 7x20 series, and already running 2011.1.2.0, there is no real reason why you need to upgrade to 1.2.1, as it's really only the Pandora SAS1 HBA fix. If you are not already on 1.2.0, then go ahead and upgrade all the way to 2011.1.2.1. I hope everyone out there is having a good April so far. • Powershell (sqlps) lastbackupdate not changing despite having run a sqlserver backup

  I'm using Powershell to check last backup times across all our sqlserver databases. • Did you forget me?

  I know it has been a long time since I last blogged. Still at it, looking for work in the “IT” field. Had another phone interview (only found out during the interview that it was for one year contract job, but I still would take it) for a Help Desk job. Didn’t get it, they thought I was not a application support person and more of a hardware support. Gee..I started out in “IT” as a programmer. Then a programmer/computer operator, then a Tandem/Lan operator and finally a Network operator. I had to deal with so many different operating systems, software and applications.   And they thought I was too hardware. Well I am working a temp day job with the U.S. Census. It gets me out of the house and out in the country. If find getting paid to check for living quarters not bad job, except for the many houses I find that are up for sale and looks like it was not the owners (former owners it seems) idea, with the kids toys still in the yards. Not good for some one with a over active imagine or for my truck. So far I have backed in to ditch (and had to be pulled out), in to power pole (no damage to pole and very little to truck) and a mail box (no damage to truck but mail box was leaning a little) in the last two weeks.   Oh an I have started reading/using “The Love Dare” book from the movie “Fireproof”. I restarted (yes I have had to go back to day one from day five) the dare this Sunday. Dare one dare/day one “Love Is Patient” and the first dare is (reading from the book is): “The first part of this dare is fairly simple. Although Love is communicated in a number of ways. Our words often reflect the condition of our heart. For the next day, resolve to demonstrate patience and to sys nothing negative to your spouse at all. If the temptation arises, choose not to say anything. It’s better to hold your tongue that to say something you’ll regret. “. This was almost too easy as I can hold back from saying anything bad to any one but, this can also be a problem in life (you hold back for so long and!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • MySQL-5.5.10 - Lost connection to MySQL server during query (Both Web Clients and MySQL Slaves)

  We've just upgraded our existing MySQL5.1 DB servers to newer (much better) hardware with MySQL 5.5, and things have been going mostly smoothly for almost 6 weeks. Just the last few days, I've noticed a few errors, such as: From a MySQL Slave: [ERROR] Error reading packet from server: Lost connection to MySQL server during query ( server_errno=2013) Or From Apache/Other: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 110 At one point this evening, many webnodes reported this error for a three minute period (many such reports as this was in a busy period). However, the issues don't appear to correspond with any times of extreme load. For all intents and purposes, the connection/thread load on MySQL is at a normal rate (between about 10 and 40 connected threads), and Web load has been a LOT higher at times over the last few weeks. Could there bee other reasons for these connection errors, that I'm not seeing?

• Where is the bottleneck?

  There is a limit on connections somewhere along the line here... On a windows server 2008 machine, each request to a url running on localhost takes ~3 seconds to complete. This is fine and normal for the url. However, if i open the same localhost url in about 10 tabs, and set them to reload all at the same time, they finish sequentially, 3 seconds after each other. Meaning the last tab has taken 30 seconds to load (3s x 10). What is especially odd is that firebug reports each page as taking 3seconds to load. Another point to add is that the status bar just sits at 'done' for the last tab until 3 seconds before completing, where it then changes to 'waiting for localhost'. I am praying there is some connection limit somewhere otherwise this would be a disaster if more than one user ever visited the site at a time! Maybe a limit or something where one pc cant make more than 2 simultaneous requests to a url at a given time?

• The Social Business Thought Leaders - Steve Denning

  How is the average organization doing? Not very well according to a number of recent books and reports. A few indicators provide quite a gloomy picture: Return on assets and invested capitals dropped to 25% of its value in 1965 in the entire US market (see The Shift Index by John Hagel) Firms are dying faster and faster with the average lifespan of companies listed in the S&P 500 index gone from 67 years in the 1920s to 15 years today (see Creative Disruption by Richard Foster) Employee engagement ratio, a high level indicator of an organization’s health proved to affect performance outcomes, does not exceed on average 20%-30% (see Employee Engagement, Gallup or The Engagement Gap, Towers Perrin) In one of the most enjoyable keynotes of the Social Business Forum 2012, Steve Denning (Author of Radical Management and Independent Management Consultant) explained why this is happening and especially what leaders should do to reverse the worrying trends. In this Social Business Thought Leaders series, we asked Steve to collapse some key suggestions in a 2 minutes video that we strongly recommend. Steve discusses traditional management - that set of principles and practices born in the early 20th century and largely inspired by thinkers such as Frederick Taylor and Henry Ford - as the main responsible for the declining performance of modern organizations. While so many things have changed in the last 100 or so years, most companies are in fact still primarily focused on maximizing profits and efficiency, cutting costs, coordinating individuals top-down through command and control. • Learning Objective-C for iPad/iPhone/iPod Development

  I am learning how to write apps for the iPad/iPhone/iPod!  Why, well several reasons.  One reason, I have 5 devices in my house on the platform.  I had an iPad and iPhone, Michelle has an iPhone, and each of the kids have iPod Touches.  They are excellent devices for life management, entertainment, and learning.  I am amazed at how well the kids pick up on it and how much it effects the way they learn.  My two year old knows how to use it better than any other device we own and she is learning new words and letters so quickly. Because of this saturation at home, it would be fun to write some apps my family could use.  Some games to bring the hobby of development back into my life.  Second reason is we want to have a Geekswithblogs app for the iPhone and iPad.  We are not sure if it is purely informational (blog posts and tweets) or if members want to be able to publish from the app.  Creating a blog editor would be tough stuff, but could be just the right challenge. There are so many more reasons, but the last one that really makes me excited is that it is a new domain of development where I get excited when I think about writing apps.  That excitement level where I want to see if there are User Groups and if we are just watching TV, to break out the MBP and start working on it.  That excitement level where I could really read a development book cover to cover and not just use as a reference.  I really do like this feeling. Who knows how long this will last and I am definitely not leaving .NET.  Microsoft software will always be my main focus, but for the time, my hobby is changing and I am getting excited about development again.   Technorati Tags: Apple,iPad Development,Objective-C,New Frontiers Image: Courtesy of Apple

• LINQ: Single vs. SingleOrDefault

  Like all other LINQ API methods that extract a scalar value from a sequence, Single has a companion SingleOrDefault. The documentation of SingleOrDefault states that it returns a single, specific element of a sequence of values, or a default value if no such element is found, although, in my opinion, it should state that it returns a single, specific element of a sequence of values, or a default value if no such element is found. Nevertheless, what this method does is return the default value of the source type if the sequence is empty or, like Single, throws an exception if the sequence has more than one element. I received several comments to my last post saying that SingleOrDefault could be used to avoid an exception. Well, it only “solves” half of the “problem”. If the sequence has more than one element, an exception will be thrown anyway. In the end, it all comes down to semantics and intent. If it is expected that the sequence may have none or one element, than SingleOrDefault should be used. If it’s not expect that the sequence is empty and the sequence is empty, than it’s an exceptional situation and an exception should be thrown right there. And, in that case, why not use Single instead? In my opinion, when a failure occurs, it’s best to fail fast and early than slow and late. Other methods in the LINQ API that use the same companion pattern are: ElementAt/ElementAtOrDefault, First/FirstOrDefault and Last/LastOrDefault.

• Final Man vs. Machine Round of Jeopardy Unfolds; Watson Dominates

  The final round of IBM’s Watson against Ken Jenning and Brad Rutter ended last night with Watson coming out in a strong lead against its two human opponents. Read on to catch a video of the match and see just how quick Watson is on the draw. Watson tore through many of the answers, the little probability bar at the bottom of the screen denoting it was often 95%+ confident in its answers. Some of the more interesting stumbles were, like in the last matches, based on nuance. By far the biggest “What?” moment of the night, however, was when it answered the Daily Double question of “The New Yorker’s 1959 review of this said in its brevity and clarity, it is ‘unlike most such manuals, a book as well as a tool’”. • Is the view history in Firefox 3.6.3 broken or is there an "undocumented feature"?

  Firefox View History Before Firefox 3.6.3 when I clicked Ctrl+H it would display my browsing history and I would be able to search it, sort it by Most Visited, Last Visited, etc. Since 3.6.3 I have been having issues: Firefox does not display any entries when filtering by Most Visited or Last Visited. Searching does not work regardless of what keyword I use (i.e. if I type stackoverflow it won't even find it, although it's one of the most visited web sites in my history). Is anybody experiencing similar problems? Are there any known issues that might be causing the problems that I'm seeing?

• Implementation details of database synchronisation API

  I want to achieve a database synchronisation between my server database and a client application. The server would run MySQL and the applications may run different database technologies, their implementation isn't important. I have a MySQL database online and web accessible via an API I wrote in PHP (just a detail). My client application ships with a copy of the online data. As time passes my goal is to check for any changes in the online database and make these updates available to the client app via an API call, by sending a date to an API endpoint corresponding to the last date the app was updated, the response would be a JSON filled with all new objects and updated objects, and delete IDs, this makes possible to update the local store appropriately. Essentially I want to do this: http://dbconvert.com/synchronization.php My question is about the implementation details. Would I need to add a column to my database tables with a "last modified" date? Since the client app could be very out of date if it's been offline for a long time, does that also mean I shouldn't delete data from the online database but instead have another column called "delete" set to 1 and a modified date updated appropriately? Would my SQL query simply check for all data with a modified date superior then the date passed into the API request by the client? I feel like there's a lot more to it then having a ton of dates everywhere. And also, worry that I will need to persist a lot of old data in order to ensure that old versions of the client app always have the opportunity to delete parts of their data when they are able to sync.

For example, an eCommerce store may offer a "printable receipt" option that, when selected, displays a PDF file within the browser. Last week's article, Filling in PDF Forms with ASP.NET and iTextSharp, looked at how to work with a special kind of PDF document, namely one that has one or more fields defined. • CentOS default never fsck root partition on start up?

  Most documentation or sites will say use "tune2fs -l " to check if the system will do fsck on the system partitions on next boot, in particular, should look at "Mount count" and "Maximum mount count" values. However, I notice for default CentOS 5 or 6 installation, when I check against the root partition, I always noticed something like this from tune2fs output: ... Mount count: 91 Maximum mount count: -1 Last checked: Thu Oct 29 18:48:14 2009 Check interval: 0 (<none>) ... i.e. the max. mount count is set to "-1". That makes me wonder does it mean CentOS (or Red Hat) won't check the root partition at all? I check the fstab, the last number for root partition is still "1" as usual. If the OS does fsck the root partition during startup, how can I tell when (i.e. after how many reboots or when) will the OS will start fsck the root parition during startup?

• I Admit I Misspoke

  OK.  I admit it.  The last post I hade mentioned that we moved the XAF DSL to the Entity Framework.  This has caused a lot of confusion.  I meant to say that we have used the ADO.NET Entity Data Model extensions.  This is the design surface that can be tailored to create Entity Framework. We leveraged the code generation within the ADO.NET Entity Data Model (EDMX) file to generate XAF/XPO classes.  This allows you to visually create the entity model, set a few XAF properties and then generate the business objects from there.  I am presenting all these topics at the Kansas City Developers Conference on June 19th.  I will post the presentation after the conference.  I have a full presentation that will demonstrate the power of the ADO.NET Entity Data Model extensions, create a small project and then add the OData layer to XAF to connect to the PowerPivot in Excel 2010. • Backup Exec 12.5 or 2010? [closed]

  Backup Exec 2010 has just dropped, and I'm about to implement a new BEWS infrastructure, complete with CALs and new central servers. When I specced this up last year, I ignored 2010 and focused on Backup Exec 12.5, since it's a mature product. In previous experience, major released of BE had numerous technical issues and seemed to improve significantly at the first service pack. However, our refresh cycle on the backup infrastructure is slow, the main driver usually being lack of support for some new server type (in this case, ESX has driven our current upgrade need). With this in mind, I'm wondering if Backup Exec 2010 should be my first choice, as it'll last longer under current support than 12.5, which will approach EOL soon. Has anyone got any perspective they could add to this? Right now, I'm leaning towards biting the bullet and going with 2010.

  In the last two weeks, when I was using MPC-HC (Media Player Classic Home Cinema) to watch some "justyfied" episodes, my F-Secure Client Security antivirus software alerted me that there was a threat in file A0027132.exe (the number increased each of the three times that the antivirus found a new threat). All these three threats are now quarantined and the files are: 1) C:/System Volume Information/_restore/{72AACB12-6526-40F2-81D7-69DF5809DD8A}\A0027132.exe 2) D:/System Volume Information/_restore/{72AACB12-6526-40F2-81D7-69DF5809DD8A}\A0027133.exe 3) D:/System Volume Information/_restore/{72AACB12-6526-40F2-81D7-69DF5809DD8A}\A0027134.exe The three threats are recognized like: 1. Backdoor.Generic.360086 2. Trojan.Packed.8707 3. Trojan.Packed.8807 F-secure and the OS are both updated at the last release/virus definition.

• Will HTML5/JS Eventually Replace All Client Side Languages? [closed]

  I'm just wondering about the future of it all. IMHO, there are 4 forces that define where technology goes: Microsoft, Apple, Google, Adobe. It looks like in Apple's iPhone/iPad iADs can now be programmed in HTML5. So does that mean HTML5 will eventually replace objective-c? Also, Microsoft has now shifted it's focus from WPF/Silverlight to HTML5 and I assume Visual Studio 2011 will be all about tooling support for HTML5. Because that's what Microsoft do. (Tools). In a few months IE9 the last major browser will support HTML5. Similarly Adobe is getting on the HTML5 bandwagon and allows to export flash content to HTML5 in their latest tools. And we all know how much in bed Google is with html5. Heck, their latest Operating System (Chrome OS) is nothing but a big fat web browser. Apps for Mobile (i.e., iPhone, Android, WM7) are very hard for a company to program especially for many different devices (each with their own language) so I'm assuming this won't last too long. I.e., HTML5 will be the unifying language. Which is somewhat sad for app developers because now users will be able to play the "cool" html5 apps for free on the web and it'll be hard to charge for them. So are strongly-typed languages really doomed, and in the future, say 5-10 years, will client side programming only be in HTML5? Will all of us become javascript programmers? :) Because the signs are sure pointing that way...

• Unable to connect to mysql through JDBC connector through Tomcat or externally.

  I've installed a stock mysql 5.5 installation, and while I can connect to the mysql service via the mysql command, and the service seems to be running, I cannot connect to it through spring+tomcat or from an external jdbc connector. I'm using the following URL: jdbc:mysql://myserver.com:myport/mydb with proper username/password, but I receive the following message: server.com: Communications link failure The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. the driver has not received any packets from the server. and tomcat throws: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: Communications link failure The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. • Making Google Talk messages appear on all logged in clients.

  We're using Google Talk as our unofficial-official chat client around the office at work. One thing that poses a big problem almost every day is the fact that Google Talk only sends a message to the clients that you last used. Even though you may be logged into GTalk on 3 different machines, if you start talking on one machine, that becomes your "active" machine, and if you go to another machine, you will still only get messages on the last active machine. Is there a way that you can force Google Talk to send messages to ALL logged in clients, regardless of which client you are actively using? That way, you don't miss any messages during the time between when you get up from the active machine and then make the new client "active".

• Reinstallation version Windows 7?

  I ordered a Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit os online and just received a DVD & Key Code sticker. The DVD label shows it to be a reinstallation DVD, Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit Dell branded and states that the DVD is only to be used to reinstall the OS on a Dell PC. I built this PC & it previously has had XP Pro installed for the last several years. A couple of weeks ago I had a problem with some Malware & made the mistake of attempting to reinstall the XP Pro only to find out that MS has locked out my key, the same one I have been using on this built PC for the last 3 years. The previous PC was built by a local PC builder & I just reinstalled the OS on the new system. Should I send this Win7 DVD back to where I bought it, or can I use it? What a mess, Thanks DWB
