• What is the most reliable session storage in PHP: Memcache, database or files?

  What is the best and most safest way to handle PHP sessions. Is the best way to store sessions in: Database (more reliable, but high bottleneck, slow speed, not good for high database usage websites)? Memcache (super fast, but distributed more security problems, chances of loosing data when the server restarted and chances of loosing data when the cache is full)? Files (default option, I guess slow since it reads and writes from file I/O, less security, etc). Which method is the best? What are the problems and good things of each of those approaches?

  I am NOT doing test driven development and I write my test classes after the actual code is written. In my current project I have a test coverage of(Line coverage) %70 for 3000 lines of Java code.(Using JUnit, Mockito and Sonar for testing) But while I feel actually I am not covering and catching %70 of the problems that can occur. So my question is in theory is that possible to have a %100 Line coverage but in reality it is meaningless because of low quality of the test code and maybe a %40 well written test code is much better than a bad %100 coverage? or we can always say line coverage more or less gives the percentage of all covered issues?

• Hosting a magnet link site which could possibly infringe copyrighted material?

  I have for the last 3 months built a crawler, indexer and alot of other things for what started out to be a home project for indexing magnet links on the internet. As my project grew I have thought about releasing my collected data (which at the minute is on a public domain but with no access) to the public. Whatever the crawler sucks in goes in, and whatever the indexer decides to index gets indexed as it is a fully automated process. My question is as follows; Considering that most of the data that is collected from what I have built points to illegal copyrighted material (as most magnet links do) where would it be best to host such a site. I notice all of the already public torrent sites are hosted in India is this because there laws are less strict on copyright infringement? Have any of you hosted such a site, and if so what problems have you ran into? And as always any advice on being a webmaster for this type website?

• What is a right datatype in C++ for OpenGL scene representation with use of GLSL

  I am programming in C++ OpenGl with GLSL. Until now I have been using a data structure that is composed of std::vector filled with structures of vertexes and with their parameters (position , normal, color ...) as a global variable for all the code. My question is, as I am using VBOs for drawing - is this a good approach to this problem? I am asking because I happen to have a lot of memory related trouble with this structure. I am trying to generate a terrain with a lot of vertices - more than 1 million. This seems to work, but as I refill the buffer I get memory related issues (crushes that occur, more or less randomly). So again the question is, is this a good data structure to use / and look for the faults in my code, or should I change to something else? Or what data structure would be advisable?

• Multi Column Block Too Narrow in Chrome

  My Web site displays song lyrics in a multi-column format, using CSS3. Both Firefox & MSIE 10+ display the multi-column text perfectly, but Chrome does not. This sample page shows the problem: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/test/html5/html5-multicolumn-test.htm The page uses a media selector, so your Chrome window must be at least 1280 pixels wide to see the effect. In fact, if you make the Chrome window less than 1280 pixels, you'll see the lyrics block change to a single column, of the same overall width. In other words, when Chrome shifts to 1-column to 2-column mode (due to the wider browser window), the lyrics block remains the same width, causing text to be squeezed together. Has anyone else seen this behavior, or know a solution? Is this a Chrome bug, or I am I doing something wrong? I posted this question on a Chrome forum a while back, but got no reply.

  We are on the stage of planning a CakePHP project. It is a relatively a big project for us, as a developer+project manager, I want to hire someone to work with me. But what I really want is to spend less time on actual coding, without losing control of the code quality. What I want to do is that I will design all the functions of the project in CakePHP, at least all the model's functions, and leave the implementation part to the coder who I am going to hire. But my worry is still if I am going to lose control of the code quality using this approach? is it feasible to do so or it is going to turn this project to a chaos.   I'm using a quadtree to prune collision detection pairs in a 2d world. How should I choose to what depth said quadtree is calculated? The world is made mostly of moving objects1, so the cost of dispatching the objects between the quadtree cells matters. What is the relationship between the gain from less collision checking and the loss from more dispatching? How can I strike a balance that performs optimally? 1 To be completely explicit, they are autonomous self-replicating cells competing for food sources.   Possible Duplicate: Cross-Platform Audio API Suggestions What options are out there these days for audio playback/mixing in C++? Primarily for Windows, but portability (particularly to Mac and iOS) would be desirable. For a small indie game, potentially commercial, though - so I'm looking for something free/low-cost. My requirements are fairly basic - I don't need 3D sound, or many-channels - simple stereo is fine. Just need to be able to mix sound effects and a music stream, maybe decoding one or more compressed audio formats (.ogg/.mp3 etc), with all the basic controls over looping, pitch, volume, etc. Is OpenAL more-or-less the standard choice, or are there other good options out there?

• Anti-depressant and programming: does it reduce your thinking and focusing abilities ?

  I wanted to ask your opinion on anti-depressants, since I took them daily for 3 years now, but I can't be sure if I'm less perfomant with them or without, since I never withdrawed. I'm still at school at the age of 25, still having some motivation problems (for example I can't get used to do something at school if I don't think it will teach me something), but I'm quite motivated to work in the video-game field, since I have some personnal projects in mind. I know C++ programming etc, I'm still learning techniques, but do you think I should try more to do my project instead of just following the work I'm assigned to ? Have you had experience with depression or anti-depressants ? How did it affect your work ? Do you think that being depressed or half-depressed can improve creativity ?   We have the requirement to find a result in a collection of records based on a prioritised set of search criteria against a relational db (I'm talking indexed field matching here rather than text search). The way we are thinking about designing the query is to begin with a highly refined and specific set of criteria. If there are no results for this initial query we want to progressively reduce the criteria one by one in order of reducing priority, querying each time such a less specific set of criteria until we find a result we can accept. Alternatively, we have considered starting with a smaller set of criteria and increasing until we have reduced number of results down to the last set. What I would like to know is if an existing term to describe this type of query exists? So that we can look to model our own on existing patterns and use best practice.

• How do I tell my boss he made the wrong choice? [migrated]

  Recently, our biggest product failed majorly because we'd only used outsourced labor to do it, and they never tested anything, etc. Finally, our CEO decided that the US team should learn the code and fix it up. (Not a total rewrite, but lots of formatting/style changes, refactoring, etc). However, he knows next to nothing about programming (thankfully, he admits it). He had been grooming me to take on the project manager position, but I had to go back to college. Now he gave it to another programmer who is naive and inexperienced. I don't feel the naive programmer will do nearly as well. The CEO's reasoning is that the naive programmer can work full time and I can only do part time, so the less senior programmer could put more work into it. How can I convince him that 15 hours of my time is worth more than the other guy's 40?

• Is it better to cut and store all sprites needed from a spritesheet in memory, or cut them out just-in-time?

  I'm not sure what's best practice here as I have little experience with this. Essentially what I am asking is... if it's better to get your single PNG with all your different sprites on it for use in-game, cut out every sprite on startup and store them in memory, then access the already-cut-out sprite from memory quickly or Only have the single PNG with all the different sprites residing in memory, and when you need, for example, a tree. You cut out the tree from the PNG and then continue to use it as normal. I imagine the former is more CPU friendly than the latter but less memory friendly, vice versa for the latter. I want to know what the norm is for game dev. This is a pixel based game using 2D art. Each PNG is actually an avatar's sprite sheet with each body part separated and then later joined to form the full body of the avatar.

• How to read data from a large number of files in a folder? [closed]

  I seem to be having some trouble figuring out a solution for a problem. See the thing is, my code is supposed to read a lot of data from a bunch of files. I've been thinking of two different approaches: 1) the first one seems simpler, I ask the user if they would like to examine the next file or just quit out of the program.( I believe this is simpler and would take less time to run through.) 2)It reads through all the files and outputs the results for each of them, and then a shared result for all of them.( I think this would be better for what I've been asked to do and it saves the user some hassle.) If anyone can tell me how to code either of these in C++, I would be very grateful. Here is a sample of the file: 0 -- 19 weight 0 -- 20 weight I use this to determine density and possibly ignore the weights which is a number.

• Can't get whole picture on the screen of a new monitor

  I have a 24inch, VM2453mh-LED, Viewsonic monitor using a Radeon 6570HD video card. Both are new. Viewsonic says the optimum size is 1920x1080. At this size the picture is beautiful, but it overlaps the screen vertically and horizontally. I am using Ubuntu 11.10, the Gnome 3 version, not Unity. On the Overview screen, the vertical icons are nearly off screen. Only the right edge shows. I opened the monitor's control menus to see if I could adjust it, but both the H/V Position and Horizontal Size are grayed out. I tried a 1600x1200 setting, and the picture was in bounds, but the quality was less, and it was stretched horizontally. The two monitor menu options were grayed out just like with the 1920x1080 setting. Can someone tell me how to resolve this problem?

• hotkeys do not work sometimes in ubuntu 12.04

  I use Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity 2D and I've stumbled upon this issue: sometimes shortcut keys stop working in some windows. For instance, I have these windows opened usually: Google Chrome, Terminal, Skype, Pidgin. Sometimes everything is OK and shortcuts work no matter what window I hit them from, however, hotkeys hit from Skype (more often) or Pidgin (less often) do not work, but they still work from Terminal or Google Chrome. Moreover, not all hotkeys are affected, the problem holds only for locking the computer (Ctrl + Alt + L) and other custom shortcuts like executing some command or launching a program (I used zenity --entry with [Super | Ctrl] + [some letter: K, N, etc] for testing). Does anyone have a clue what is causing the problem and how to fix it?

Eps has a data type of double. • I've totally missed the point of distributed vcs [closed]

  I thought the major benefit of it was that each developers code gets stored within each others repository. My impression was that each developer has their working directory, their own repository, and then a copy of the other developers repository. Removing the need for central server, as you have as many backups as you have developers/repositories Turns out this is nto the case, and your code is only backed up (somewhere other than locally) when you push, the same as a commit in subversions. I am bit disappointed ... hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised when it handles merges better and there are less conflicts ?

  I am looking for beginner books into PHP 5 (Maybe with a bit into MySQL?) and HTML 5. I started self-teaching myself PHP although it has become a problem as the tutorials online are either outdated or just crap. I also managed to start learning with very little HTML knowledge so I am looking to brush up on my HTML knowledge and get more into PHP. I also am unsure weather I should be looking into XHTML or HTML5, or both so an answer to that would be splendid. I just want to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on other for my programming needs. I've searched Google for books but I'm just not sure which one is the "best" for me and makes for good practice and habits which brings me here.

• Can you recommend a good test plan template?

  Can you recommend a good test plan template for an agile testing team? I know there are templates for testing on the web and have already looked at some found by search engines, but I could really use something lightweight and something that has already been tried by skilled testers and is known to work well. Many templates I've seen give me the feeling that writing test documents is expected to be a third of the work that those testers are doing, but my team really prefers to use less documentation and more actual test writing. We use a wiki for documentation, so an approach that lends itself to living documents would be great. My hope is that using a more structured approach to test planning will increase the usefulness of my test plan while reducing the effort to create it by allowing me to think about the tests, and not the format and structure of the plan. My workplace does not have something already on hand, so whatever I start doing might be adopted by the company.

• Not assigning Bugs to a specific user

  My question: Is there a benefit to NOT assigning a Bug to a particular developer? Leaving it to the team as-a-whole? Our department has decided to be more Agile by not assigning Bugs/Defects to individuals. Using Team Foundation Server 2012, we'll place all Bugs in a development team's "Area" but leave the "Assigned To" field blank. The idea is that the team will create a Task work item which will be assigned to an individual and the Task will link to the Bug. The Team as a whole will therefore take responsibility for the Bug, not an individual, aligning to Scrum - apparently. I see the down side. The reporting tools built into TFS become less useful when you cannot sort by assigned vs unassigned, let alone sorting by which user Bugs are assigned. Is there a benefit I'm not seeing? Besides encouraging teamwork by putting the responsibility on the team-as-a-whole instead of an individual?

I want to write an article explaining how the user can obtain the best results.
