I’m back, now with Windows Live Writer goodness

I’ve reimaged my home laptop. I’m trying to populate it with as much free goodness as possible to see if the free way is as good as the old pay way. Turns out, I’ve got access to Windows Live Writer. I’m not sure where that came from, maybe with Vista Ultimate. I don’t know. Either way, it makes my blog posting a whole lot easier. So, maybe, just maybe, it will make me more likely to post. Changing file permissions on USB external hard drive

I am using an external USB hard drive for a long time in Ubuntu 10.04, both at work and at home. Now I've installed 12.04 at home. Today I used the USB drive for the first time. I can read the disk but can't change the permissions of a file I wanted. Output of "mount" /dev/sdb1 on /media/FREECOM HDD type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077, utf8=1,showexec,flush,uhelper=udisks) What I try sudo chmod u+w bsst-hdf_to_bsst-h5 and what I get -rw-r--r-- 1 paco paco 2956 dic 19 10:27 bsst-hdf_to_bsst-h5 Any idea would be appreciated. You'll probably find that you create read-only dependency properties much less often than read-write properties, but this should still save you some typing when you do need to do so. Making dummy applications while not involved in LIVE work [closed]

I know this is subjective but I am looking for some real time helpful points/advice here, which will be helpful for some to get motivated. In our company so many people are on bench(not assigned with real time work) and they do not want to experiment things by their own. What would be a good motivation for them to keep their learning spirit? I personally feel that one can learn and give more effort in live client work than regular practicing things and making dummies. Am I right here or it is just my thinking only?

Set nomodeset in usb installation (efi loader with iso)

I'm working with the studyblast solution (http://studyblast.wordpress.com/2011/08/14/guide-mac-os-x-lion-how-to-boot-a-linux-live-system-from-a-usb-drive-how-to-update-any-ocz-ssds-firmware/) to creating a live usb for osx. I managed to get Ubuntu booted but the screen looks like a corrupt/glitch image. I can just about make out the clock on the bottom right and a few icons. I've been told that this is an easy fix and that nomodeset needs to be set for the graphics card but all the solutions i find are for a hard drive installed Ubuntu where you can cd in and edit the grub file - how do you do this is it's in an iso? Fix Windows MBR using Ubuntu Live CD

I already have the ms-sys installed but from the threads that I saw, I'm not completely sure in which /dev I should execute the command: sudo ms-sys --mbr7 /dev/??? computer doesn't boot from usb ubuntu installer when trying to install it alongside windows 7

I'm very noob at linux and installing techniques. I want to install ubuntu 12.04 from bootable usb flash alongside windows 7 ( also tried live CD but now working ) but computer is not booting from usb flash or LIVE-CD and boots windows 7 ( acer aspire 4750g ). and of course I have set the bios priority in the right way. There is one important point to tell that I have installed Fedora 16 on my laptop successfully and now I have it on my system. when I was trying to install fedora i got some error and searched about it and got this point that I should delete a .efi file and then installation went right. In this case , what should I do to solve the problem? ( I also don't need my Fedora anymore )

Seeking questions about creating Microsoft Live Labs Pivot collections

I've spent the past 3 weeks working a lot with Pivot from Microsoft Live Labs (http://getpivot.com/). Pivot is a tool that allows you to visually explore data. Its an interesting take on visual data mining. Anyway, I've been writing a lot of code that creates a hierarchy of Pivot collections, where one item in the collection drills down into an entirly new collection. The dev community around Pivot is still very young, so there isnt much tribal knowledge built up yet. I've spent a lot of time trying to get things to work through trial and error, as well as digging around in Reflector. But I've finally got a framework built for programatically creating DeepZoom images, Pivot collections, Sparse Images, etc. If anyone has any questions, or suggestions on a post topic, leave a comment and I'll try and answer your question.

How to connect to the internet through broadband through ALFA USB adapter

Hi evryone I have question that really make me mad..I search every where and I couldn't find the answer.pleas read the details carefully: I have broadband (Wan mini-port PPPOE) account from a wierless network near from us...I'm receiving the signal with grid and Alfa AWUS036H wireless usb adapter.In all of windows version I can connect through my broadband when I do these steps 1.setup new connection or network 2.connect to the internet 3.setup new broadband connection then I but the ISP name(not Important just to remember my broadband connection) and then i put the username and password then connect. I can find and connect to my wireless networkbut when I make Dsl connection in ubuntu 12.04LTS and I put the username and password I couldn't connect.. I tried this tool"gnome dial up tool" and wouldn't work.. in other way..(how can I connect to broadband connection through ALFA USB adapter??) my wireless network have a servers when i check with winbox: mac adress ip adress server name version router board verson and I connect PPP through them... any answer will help me ..so we could solve this problem. thanks.

Install wont boot up, stuck on loading text dots / restarts

Friend gave me her laptop, we agreed on Ubuntu, but I have troubles even booting up live version (see the notebook). I tried 12.04 64bit on USB stick, it does nothing, when I choose booting live version, it just restarts PC. Then I tried 32bit version, it starts loading, but its stuck on loading components, printing on black screen just dots ........... I Googled it, found similar problem - somebody suggested to use older version and then upgrade it. I went through 11.04, 10.04 - 64 and 32 same result. Restart or infinite loading. I did memtest, it showed 4 errors, Windows Vista is running "fine", no "bluescreens" etc. Any ideas what am I doing wrong?

12.10 live dvd no video input

Hi I have been trying install Ubuntu 12.10, but as soon as it gets past my bios and to the screen with the blinking line in the top left, I get a no video input message on my tv (like when you turn the tv on with nothing connected). I have used live dvd's of both betas, alphas and daily build all with exactly the same results. Has any one else had this ? Is there a fix ? Dose this mean I can never upgrade my Ubuntu again ? (12.04 works ive been using since beta) My pc ,while old, should run this fine CPU = 2x Intel P4 HT @ 3ghz GPU = Nvidia Geforce 310 via HDMI RAM = 2 Gb DDR 2 HDD = 2 x 7200 rpm SATA Please help me I use Ubuntu exclusively on my pc and would like to keep doings so.

Xubuntu keeps loading on install with usb stick

I'm trying to install Xubuntu on my computer. I've followed a guide to create a USB bootable drive. I've inserted the USB stick and started the computer. I can see Xubuntu loading and after a minute or 2 it shows me a screen asking me if I'd like to use the live version or if I'd like to install. I choose install. Then on the next screen I select English as language. When I click continue, Xubuntu just keeps loading. It doesn't really freeze as I can still quit and move the cursor. When I clicked quit, I see the live version and all is working just fine. I can browse the internet, etc. What could be wrong?

Why Ubuntu is not booting anymore from USB live?

I have just purchased a brand new laptop Samsung 300e5c with Windows 7. So I have reduce the windows partition and I have installed ubuntu 12.04 from my USB pen drive. Then I have tried to boot again from USB pen drive but it doesn't work anymore. I have tryed to boot on others laptop from my USB pen drive and it does work perfectly. but on my laptop, NO :(. I have set all USB drive as first boot device in BIOS. I have tryed on each USB port of my laptop but it doesn't work. Only the first time it did work when I installed ubuntu and now it doesn't work anymore. It's very strange I can see the content of the usb pen drive on my laptop and on others laptop without problems. why it doesn't work anymore ?

busybox initramfs prompt while attempting to install from live cd on 2nd hdd I've created a partition in ext3 on my second hdd to intall linux however when i come to boot the CD i get directed to a busybox prompt with no other choice than help. Other topics i've read on the subject where bound to the idea ubuntu has been already installed, and that the partition needs to be just indicated or else... But since i've no ubuntu installed, neither have i any partition that ubuntu should consider like that... How can i go through that?
