• ffmpeg cutting video duration

  When using ffmpeg on linux, my 4.3GB 2.21 second video is being chopped down to 1.56 duration. • Server Recovery from Denial of Service

  I'm looking at a server that might be misconfigured to handle Denial of Service. The database was knocked offline after the attack, and was unable to restart itself after it failed to restart when the attack subsided. Details of the Attack: The Attacker either intentionally or unintentionally sent 1000's of search queries using the applications search query url within a couple of seconds. For example: sren armcross It will change the session name to armcross (ARM gcc cross compiler) and output something like: screen session name changed from '25278.pts-15.linux-ic37' to 'armcross' So, the key question now is how to get current session name. Not only for display the old session name, but according to Is it possible to change GNU screen session name after created? , I have to know it(pass to -d -r) before I can change it to something else. Can we use $STY for current session name? No. $STY will not change after you have changed the session name to a user-defined one. However, for command screen -d -r <oldsessname> -X sessionname armcross should be the user-defined name(if ever defined) instead of $STY, otherwise, screen spouts error "No screen session found." Maybe, there is a verbose way, use screen -list to list all sessions(user-defined name listed), then, match the pid part from $STY against those listed sessions and we will find current session's user-defined name. It should not be so verbose for such a straightforward question. Don't you think so? The -d -D and -r -R options seems to expose too much implementation detail to screen's user. I am using Ansible to provision my instance. It is a Digital Ocean single core 512MB VM. I have been using vagrant / ansible with the same config locally for dev and it has compiled fine, this is the first cloud VM I am attempting to provision. The only difference is the base image for my DO server is coming from DO and for my local dev, I built my own Vagrant box via VirtualBox from a stock CentOS basic server install. I pull it down from my DropBox. • Mount an VHD on Mac OS X

  Is it possible (how) to mount an VHD file created by Windows 7 in OS X? I found some information about how to do this on linux. There is a fuse fs "vdfuse" which uses virtualbox libs to mount filesystems supported by virtualbox. However I was unable to compile the package on osx because nearly all headers are missing and I doubt that it would work anyway... EDIT #2: Okay I got my hands dirty and finally compiled vdfuse (http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=33355&start=0) on osx. As a starting point I used macfuse (http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/) and looked at the example file systems. So now I can partially mount vhds. The separate partitions appear as block files Partition1, Partition2, ... on my mount point. However Mac OS X does not include a loopback file system and macfuse's loopback fs does not work with block files, so we need a loopback fs to mount the blockfiles as actual partitions.

Activity monitor gives me a mysqld process running by me, and everytime i KILL the process both via Activity Monitor and via kill =9 pid it starts right back up.. Sampling the process points back to the MAMP mysqld.. wtf?! About to throw MAMP out the window and boot up a VM of CentOS =)

• fglrx-legacy-driver not seeing Radeon HD 4650 AGP

  I am running Debian Squeeze on an old Dell Dimension 8300 box. It has an AGP Radeon HD 4650 card. I use this machine to mine bitcoins, and today I noticed that the machine had rebooted! My precious uptime! Anyway, my miner wouldn't start, so I figured might as well update my graphics driver, maybe that would fix the issue. I went to amd.com and downloaded the newest driver (12.6 legacy), but after installing it, aticonfig gave an error: aticonfig: No supported adapters detected I uninstalled the driver and figured I'd try to install it from apt. AMD has dropped support for the HD 4000 series in fglrx, forcing me to use fglrx-legacy-driver (currently only in experimental). In order to install this, I had to update libc6 (and some other important packages, like gcc), I had to use their wheezy versions. I finally got fglrx-legacy-driver installed, but I still got: aticonfig: No supported adapters detected Why isn't the driver finding my video card? I have a hunch it has something to do with the fact that it's an AGP video card. Thing is, since I am on kernel 3.2, I need to apply this patch to common/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/firegl_public.c. I thought ATI dropped support for the 4xxx series after 12.4. Why doesn't 12.6 legacy work?

  So, I see similar questions, but none of the answers work for me. I updated Python to 3.1.3 from 2.6.1. Everything works, except: When I type python into Terminal, I get: Python 2.6.1 (r261:67515, Jun 24 2010, 21:47:49) [GCC 4.2.1 (Apple Inc. build 5646)] on darwin Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> So, how do I change the version of Python that runs in the Shell? I've tried the script that they provide. It adds their directory to my $PATH, but it still doesn't change the version that'd displayed from Terminal. Here's what I get when I echo $PATH: /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/bin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/bin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin It appears that the script provided has added their directory for every time I ran the script (I tried it a few times, naturally).   I am new to Linux. I am compiling Linux kernel (ver: 2.6.34.12) in gcc in traditional manner in VMware machine in Ubuntu (kernel version - 2.6.38-8-generic) 11.04 version. I am unable to find, where to update about newly compiled kernel in the grub.cfg file. I updated the newly created image version name in the existing image. Then VMware didn't able to load new kernel. I have searched in internet but I didn't find. So anyone can help me, to update in the grub.cfg and to successfully load new kernel. Few things about what I have done: Make bzImage to create image file. Make modules_install && make install to install modules and then sudo mkinitramfs -o initramfs.img-2.6.34 2.6.34. Then sudo gedit grub.cfg. In that at the mementry I updated the version of vmlinuz and initrd from 2.6.38-8 to 2.6.34.12. This is I have done.

  Slipping some (non-root) user a piece of malignant code that he or she executes might be considered as one of the highest security breaches possible. (The only higher I can see is actually accessing the root user) What can an attacker effectively do when he/she gets a standard, (let's say a normal Ubuntu user) to execute code? Where would an attacker go from there? What would that piece of code do? Let's say that the user is not stupid enough to be lured into entering the root/sudo password into a form/program she doesn't know. Only software from trusted sources is installed. The way I see it there is not really much one could do, is there? Addition: I partially ask this because I am thinking of granting some people shell (non-root) access to my server. They should be able to have normal access to programs. I want them to be able to compile programs with gcc. So there will definitely be arbitrary code run in user-space...

• EC2 AMI won't boot after edit

  I did something stupid, I got a new laptop and copied everything over to the new one, then wiped the old one clean. Then I realized that I forgot to copy the private key out of .ssh that I use to connect to my AWS EBS backed instance. So I can't log in to my custom AMI. So I created a new Volume from the Snapshot of the AMI, then started up a public instance and attached the Volume to it, edit the sshd_config to allow for password log in. Unmounted the volume, detached it, made a snapshot of it, then made a new AMI from the snapshot. The new AMI launches, but never passes the Status Checks and is not reachable. What am I doing wrong? Or alternatively how can I fix my problem? • RHEL 5.3 Kickstart - How specify location of individual package in Workstation folder?

  I keep getting "package does not exist" errors during the install. I made a kickstart ISO to create an unattended install of a RHEL 5.3 build machine for C++ software releases. It pulls the kickstart config file from our internal web server. This is handy; it makes it easy to test and modify without having to make a new ISO. And I plan to check it in to version control if I can get it working. Anyway, the rpm packages are located in two folders on the disk; Client and Workstation. The packages install fine for the ones that are physically located under the Client folder. It cannot find those under the Workstation folder such as as doxygen and subversion complaining that packages do not exist.   I have a specific URL pattern on a site which needs to be redirected to the HTTPS version. This is a Django site; Nginx checks each URL in memcached, and if it doesn't find a cached version it proxies the request to Apache/mod_python for Django to render the page. The relevant configuration block is rewrite ^/certificate https://mysite.com/certificate ; rewrite ^/([a-zA-Z]{2})/certificate https://mysite.com/certificate ; ...and it doesn't appear to be working at all. • Mysqld shutting down by itself

  I'm running a Wordpress Blog that gets medium-high traffic. It is hosted in an Ubuntu Server 2GB Memory 2 Core Processor 40GB SSD Disk, 3TB Transfer. The problem is that MySQL shuts down by itself after an hour or two. I had to restart mysql each and every time this happens. • How to set an executable white list?

  Under Linux, is it possible to set a white-list of executables for a certain group of users? I need them to be unable to use, for example, make, gcc and executables on removable disks. How can this be done? Edit, let me explain better. I'm dealing with a high school IT system, young geeks that (during the lessons) want to play, surf the net, damage those computer however they can. The major step to achieve this goal was to remove the system they're familiar with and install Ubuntu in all the computers. This actually works quite well, but recent events proved that this is not enough. I want to allow them to execute certain safe programs, like Open Office, and to deny any other program, whether it is preinstalled software, something they carry in usb drives, a downloaded program or a script they program on site. It's possible to remove the 'x' permission on any file on the pc, but of course it would be impractical. Furthermore, they would be able to run anything they download. I thought the best solution would be to make a white-list of safe programs and to deny anything else, but I don't really know how to do it. Any idea is helpful.

• fglrx-legacy-driver not seeing Radeon HD 4650 AGP

  I am running Debian Squeeze on an old Dell Dimension 8300 box. It has an AGP Radeon HD 4650 card. I use this machine to mine bitcoins, and today I noticed that the machine had rebooted! My precious uptime! Anyway, my miner wouldn't start, so I figured might as well update my graphics driver, maybe that would fix the issue. I went to amd.com and downloaded the newest driver (12.6 legacy), but after installing it, aticonfig gave an error: aticonfig: No supported adapters detected I uninstalled the driver and figured I'd try to install it from apt. AMD has dropped support for the HD 4000 series in fglrx, forcing me to use fglrx-legacy-driver (currently only in experimental). In order to install this, I had to update libc6 (and some other important packages, like gcc), I had to use their wheezy versions. I finally got glrx-legacy-driver installed, but I still got: aticonfig: No supported adapters detected Why isn't the driver finding my video card? I have a hunch it has something to do with the fact that it's an AGP video card.   I am not sure whether this question belong to Stack Overflow or here, but here we go. I am designing a online 'C' compiler, which will compile and invoke the program if compilation succeeded. But When file.c That is the source code entered contains Infinite loop then This script crashes the server and utilizes a lot of memory and time. So here is my question: Is There any way to detect for how much time does the process file.exe is Running? How Much Space is Utilized by that process that is file.exe? Is There any way to kill the process file.exe if space and time utilization increases beyond certain limit? That Mean if we allocate time of 2.5sec and space of 40Mb at max for that process file.exe and if any one of those 2 constraints is violated then we should display appropriate error message to client Is it possible? I am Using WAMP (Windows 7).

• Different font SIZES in a Text Editor, based on Script(Alphabet) type (ie. per Unicode Code-Block)

  Some non-Latin-based scripts(alphabets) have more detail in their glyphs than do the Latin-based-script equivalents, and typically need a larger font to give the same degree of legibility (resolution-wise). Sometimes, both script types need to be present in the same file. Notepad++ allows different font SIZES (and colour, etc) courtesy of syntax-highlighting. This allows me to display larger-fonted non-Latin-based script in a // BIG-FONT comment. Although this has been quite handy for me in some situations, it is quite limited. A Word Processor can handle this scenario, but I'm not interested in that. I want a nice simple(?) plain(?) Text Editor to do it... on a per script-type basis... eg. mixing Latin-1 and Devanagari (and Mandarin, and ... Such a thing may not exits, but Notepad++ has shown that a simple(?) plain(?) Text Editor is capable of it. Does anyone know of such a Text Editor? ...Q. Why not a Word Processor? ...A. Because GCC and Python don't like that format! but UTF-8 is fine.

  When I convert an EXR file sequence with x264 using FFmpeg and convert the colorspace from linear to SRGB (with gamma 0.45454545) I get some heavy banding issues (most visible on a dark gradient). • USB software protection dongle for Java with an SDK which is cross-platform “for real”. Does it exist?

  What I'd like to ask is if anybody knows about an hardware USB-dongle for software protection which offers a very complete out-of-the-box API support for cross-platform Java deployments. Its SDK should provide a jar (only one, not one different library per OS & bitness) ready to be added to one's project as a library. The jar should contain all the native stuff for the various OSes and bitnesses From the application's point of view, one should continue to write (api calls) once and run everywhere, without having to care where the end-user will run the software The provided jar should itself deal with loading the appropriate native library Does such a thing exist? With what I've tried so far, you have different APIs and compiled libraries for win32, linux32, win64, linux64, etc (or you even have to compile stuff yourself on the target machine), but hey, we're doing Java here, we don't know (and don't care) where the program will run! And we can't expect the end-user to be a software engineer, tweak (and break!) its linux server, link libraries, mess with gcc, litter the filesystem, etc... In general, Java support (in a transparent cross-platform fashion) is quite bad with the dongle SDKs I've evaluated so far (e.g. KeyLok and SecuTech's UniKey). I even purchased (no free evaluation kit available) SecureMetric SDKs&dongles (they should've been "soooo" straighforward to integrate -- according to marketing material :\ ) and they were the worst ever: SecureDongle X has no 64bit support and SecureDongle SD is not cross-platform at all. So, has anyone out there been through this and found the ultimate Java security usb dongle for cross-platform deployments? Note: software is low-volume, high-value; application is off-line (intranet with no internet access), so no online-activation alternatives and the like. -- EDIT Tried out HASP dongles (used to be called "Aladdin"), and added them to the no-no list: here, too, there is no out-of-the-box (out-of-the-jar) support: e.g. end-linux-user has to manually put the .so library (the specific file for the appropriate bitness) in the right place on his filesystem, and export an env. variable accordingly. -- EDIT 2 I really don't understand all the negativity and all the downvoting: is this a taboo topic? Is it so hard to understand that a freelance developer has to put food on the table everyday to feed its family and pay the bills at the end of the month? Please don't talk about "adding value" as a supplier, because that'd be off-topic. Furthermore I'm not in direct contact with end-customers, but there's an intermediate reselling entity: it's this entity I want to prevent selling copies of the software without sharing the revenue. -- EDIT 3 I'd like to emphasize the fact that the question is looking for a technical answer, not one about opinions concerning business models, philosophical lucubrations on the concept of value, resellers' reliability, etc. I cannot change resellers, because this isn't a "general purpose" kind of sw, but a very vertical one and (for some reasons it's not worth explaining here) I must go through them. I just need to prevent the "we sold 2 copies, here's your share [bwahaha we sold 10]" scenario.
