• Linq to SQL Repository ~theory~ - Generic but now uses Linq to Objects?

  The project I am currently working on used Linq to SQL as an ORM data access technology. Its an MVC3 Web app. The problem I faced was primarily due to the inability to mock (for testing) the DataContext which gets autogenerated by the DBML designer. So to solve this issue (after much reading) I refactored the repository system which was in place - single repository with seperate and duplicated access methods for each table which ended up with something like 300 methods only 10 of which were unique - into a single repository with generic methods taking the table and returning more generic types to the upper reaches of the application. My question revolves more around the design I've used to get thus far and the differences I'm noticing in the structure of the app. 1) Having refactored the code from the dark ages which used classic Linq to SQL queries: public Billing GetBilling(int id) { var result = ( from bil in _bicDc.Billings where bil.BillingId == id select bil).SingleOrDefault(); return (result); } it now looks like: public T GetRecordWhere<T>(Expression<Func<T, bool>> predicate) where T : class { T result; try { result = _dataContext.GetTable<T>().Where(predicate).SingleOrDefault(); } catch (Exception ex) { throw ex; } return result; } and is used by the controller with a query along the lines of: _repository.GetRecordWhere<Billing>(x => x.BillingId == 1); which is fine, and precisely what I wanted to achieve. ...however.... I'm also having to do the following to get precisely the result set i require in the controller class (the highest point of the app in essence)... viewModel.RecentRequests = _model.GetAllRecordsWhere<Billing>(x => x.BillingId == 1) .Where(x => x.BillingId == Convert.ToInt32(BillingType.Submitted)) .OrderByDescending(x => x.DateCreated). Take(5).ToList(); This - as far as my understanding is correct - is now using Linq to Objects rather than the Linq to SQL queries I was previously? Is this okay practise? It feels wrong to me but I dont know why. Probably because the logic of the queries is in the very highest tier of the app, rather than the lowest, but... I defer to you good people for advice. One of the issues I considered was bringing the entire table into memory but I understand that using the Iqeryable return type the where clause is taken to the database and evaluated there. Thus returning only the resultset i require... i may be wrong. And if you've made it this far, well done. Thank you, and if you have any advice it is very much appreciated!!

• Brainstorming: Weird JPA problem, possibly classpath or jar versioning problem???

  I'm seeing a weird error message and am looking for some ideas as to what the problem could be. I'm sort of new to using the JPA. I have an application where I'm using Spring's Entity Manager Factory (LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean), EclipseLink as my ORM provider, connected to a MySQL DB and built with Maven. I'm not sure if any of this matters..... When I deploy this application to Glassfish, the application works as expected. The problem is, I've created a set of stand alone unit tests to run outside of Glassfish that aren't working correctly. I get the following error (I've edited the class names a little) com.xyz.abc.services.persistence.entity.MyEntity cannot be cast to com.xyz.abc.services.persistence.entity.MyEntity The object cannot be cast to a class of the same type? How can that be?   Weird error and this is driving me crazy all the day. To me it seems a bug because there are no positional parameters in my query. • Castle ActiveRecord - schema generation without enforcing referential integrity?

  Hi all, I've just started playing with Castle active record as it seems like a gentle way into NHibernate. I really like the idea of the database schema being generate from my classes during development. I want to do something similar to the following: [ActiveRecord] public class Camera : ActiveRecordBase<Camera> { [PrimaryKey] public int CameraId {get; set;} [Property] public int CamKitId {get; set;} [Property] public string serialNo {get; set;} } [ActiveRecord] public class Tripod : ActiveRecordBase<Tripod> { [PrimaryKey] public int TripodId {get; set;} [Property] public int CamKitId {get; set;} [Property] public string serialNo {get; set;} } [ActiveRecord] public class CameraKit : ActiveRecordBase<CameraKit> { [PrimaryKey] public int CamKitId {get; set;} [Property] public string description {get; set;} [HasMany(Inverse=true, Table="Cameras", ColumnKey="CamKitId")] public IList<Camera> Cameras {get; set;} [HasMany(Inverse=true, Table="Tripods", ColumnKey="CamKitId")] public IList<Camera> Tripods {get; set;} } A camerakit should contain any number of tripods and cameras. Camera kits exist independently of cameras and tripods, but are sometimes related. The problem is, if I use createschema, this will put foreign key constraints on the Camera and Tripod tables. I don't want this, I want to be able to to set CamKitId to null on the tripod and camera tables to indicate that it is not part of a CameraKit. Is there a way to tell activerecord/nhibernate to still see it as related, without enforcing the integrity? I was thinking I could have a cameraKit record in there to indicate "no camera kit", but it seems like oeverkill. Or is my schema wrong? Am I doing something I shouldn't with an ORM? (I've not really used ORMs much) Thanks!

• Arguments for moving from LINQtoSQL to Nhibernate?

  Backstory: Hi all, I just spent a lot of time reading many of the LINQ vs Nhibernate threads here and on other sites. I work in a small development team of 4 people and we don't even have really any super experienced developers. We work for a small company that has a lot of technical needs but not enough developers to implement them (and hiring more is out of the question right now). Typically our projects (which individually are fairly small) have been coded separately and weren't really layered in anyway, code wasn't re-used, no class libraries, and we just use the LINQtoSQL .dbml files for our pojects, we really don't even use objects but pass around values and stuff, the only time we use objects is when inserting to a database (heck not even querying since you don't need to assign it to a type and can just bind to gridview). Despite all this as I said our company has a lot of technical needs, no one could come to us for a year and we would have plenty of work to implement requested features. Well I have decided to change that a bit first by creating class libraries and actually adding layers to our applications. I am trying to meet these guys halfway by still using LINQtoSQL as the ORM yet and still use VB as the language. However I am finding it a b***h of a time dealing with so many thing in LINQtoSQL that I found easy in Nhibernate (automatic handling of the session, criteria creation easier than expression trees, generic an dynamic querying easier etc.) So... Question: How can I convince my lead developers and other senior programmers that switching to Nhibernate is a good thing? That being in control of our domain objects is a good thing? That being able to implement interfaces is a good? I've tried exlpaining the advantages of this before but it's not understood by them because they've never programmed in a true OO & layered way. Also one of the counter arguments to this I can see is sqlMetal generates those classes automatically and therefore it saves a lot of time. I can't really counter that other than saying spending more time on infrastructure to make it more scalable and flexible is good, but they can't see how. Again, I know the features and advantages (somewhat enough I believe) of each, but I need arguments applicable to my context, hence why I provided the context. I just am not a very good arguer I guess. (Caveat: For all the LINQtoSQL lovers, I may just not be super proficient as LINQ, but I find it very cumbersome that you are required to download some extra library for dynamic queries which don't by default support guid comparisons, and I also find the way of updating entitites to be cumbersome as well in terms of data context managing, so it could just be that I suck hehe.)

• Does Hibernate create tables in the database automatically.

Does the Hibernate handle it automatically by creating tables and fields once i specify them.   I'm trying to migrate my flat php project to Symfony2, but its coming to be very hard. For instance, I have a table of Products specification that have several specifications and are distinguishables by its "cat" attribute in that Extraspecs DB table. Therefore I've created a Entity for that table and want to make an array of just the specifications with "cat" = 0... I supose the code is this one.. right? $typeavailable = $this->getDoctrine() ->getRepository('LabsCatalogBundle:ProductExtraspecsSpecs') ->findBy(array('cat' => '0')); Now how can i put this in an array to work with a form like this?: form = $this ->createFormBuilder($product) ->add('specs', 'choice', array('choices' => $typeavailableArray), 'multiple' => true) Thank you in advance :) # Thank you all.. I want to require a generic type passed into my class to have a constructor like this: new(IDictionary<string,object>) so the class would look like this public MyClass<T> where T : new(IDictionary<string,object>) { T CreateObject(IDictionary<string,object> values) { return new T(values); } } But the compiler doesn't support this, it doesn't really know what I'm asking. Some of you might ask, why do you want to do this? Well I'm working on a pet project of an ORM so I get values from the DB and then create the object and load the values. I thought it would be cleaner to allow the object just create itself with the values I give it. As far as I can tell I have two options: 1) Use reflection(which I'm trying to avoid) to grab the PropertyInfo[] array and then use that to load the values. 2) require T to support an interface like so: public interface ILoadValues { void LoadValues(IDictionary values); } and then do this public MyClass<T> where T:new(),ILoadValues { T CreateObject(IDictionary<string,object> values) { T obj = new T(); obj.LoadValues(values); return obj; } } The problem I have with the interface I guess is philosophical, I don't really want to expose a public method for people to load the values.   I have a table Car in my db, one of the columns is purchaseDate. I want to be able to tag every car with a number of Policies (limited to 10 policies). Each policy has a time to life (ttl, a duration of time, like '5 years', '10 months' etc), that is, for how long since the car's purchaseDate the policy can be applied. I need to perform the following actions: when inserting a Car, it will be set with a number of Policies (at least one is set) sometimes a Car will be updated to add/remove a Policy searches must be done taking into account date/policies, for example: 'select all cars that are not covered by any policy as of today' My current design is (pol0..pol9 are the policies): CREATE TABLE Car ( id int NOT NULL IDENTITY(1,1), purchaseDate datetime NOT NULL, //more stuff... pol0 smallint default NULL, pol1 smallint default NULL, pol2 smallint default NULL, pol3 smallint default NULL, pol4 smallint default NULL, pol5 smallint default NULL, pol6 smallint default NULL, pol7 smallint default NULL, pol8 smallint default NULL, pol9 smallint default NULL, PRIMARY KEY (id) ) CREATE TABLE Policy ( id smallint NOT NULL, name varchar(50) collate Latin1_General_BIN NOT NULL, ttl varchar(100) collate Latin1_General_BIN NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (id) ) The problem I am facing is that the sql to perform the query above is a nightmare to write. As I don't know in which column each policy can be, so I have to check all columns for every policy etc etc. So I am wondering wether it is worth changing this. My questions are: The smallint as Policy id was chosen instead of an 'int IDENTITY' in order to save some space as there are going to be millions of Car records. It just adds complexity when creating a Policy as we must handle the id etc. Was it worth doing this? I am thinking that maybe there is a much better design? Obviously we could move the policy/car relation to its own table CarPolicy, benefits would be: no limit on 10 policies per car adding/removing etc much easier when only the default policy is applied (when no others are applied one called Default policy is applied), we could signal that by not having any entry in CarPolicy, now this is just done inserting the Default policy id in one of the columns. The cons are that we would need to change the DB, ORM classes etc. What would you recommend? Maybe there is another smart way to implement this that we are not aware without using the CarPolicy table?

  Can this code be optimized or re-factored? Is this an optimal approach to tagging? The following code is a callback in my posts model. It creates a record that associates a tag with a post in a QuestionsTags joiner table. When necessary, if a given tag does not already exist in the tags table, the function creates it, then uses its id to create the new record in the QuestionsTags table. The difficulty with this approach is the QuestionsTags table depends on data in the tags table which may or may not exist. The function assumes the following tables: tags(id, tagName), posts(tags) // Comma delimited list questionsTags(postId, tagId) The idea is to loop over a delimited list of tags submitted with a post and check to see if each tag already exists in the tags table If tag exists: Check to see if there's already a QuestionTag record for this post and this tag in the QuestionTags table.   Possible Duplicate: My server’s been hacked EMERGENCY I run a webserver which over the last few days seems to have become infected with malware that tries to include content from "http://g00glestatic.com/s.js" It appears the attacker gained access to one of the user accounts (not root), made a few changes, added a few files and ran a few bash commands. These changes stuck out clearly to me because it is not a shared server and I am the only person with access through very secure passwords. "; printf "install uprobes /bin/sh" > ololo.conf; MODPROBE_OPTIONS="-C ololo.conf" staprun -u ololo rm -f ololo.conf fi Other Noticeable Edits Any files that contain: ([.htaccess]|[index|header|footer].php|[*.js]) will have been modified and all system file and directory permissions will have been changed to: x--x--x My steps to remove this malware re uploaded original php/js files to revert any changes Changed all user passwords Modified hosts.allow to a static ip so that only I have access Removed the above 4 files and checked all modified file dates within that directory to check for any other recent modifications, none can be found Conclusion I'm hoping that as they did not have root access, any changes they wished to make higher up failed and they were only able to display an iframe on the site for a short amount of time? What else do I need to look for to check the malware infection has not spread? Second Conclusion This malware sinks too deep to 'clean', if you get infected I recommend a server nuke and rebuild from backups with increased security. Possibility It's possible that Filezilla ftp passwords were stolen through a trojan as they're unfortunately stored unencrypted. However Trend Micro Titanium has not found any. The settings box to disable passwords being saved has now been ticked, I also recommend that you take this action.
