• Oracle Developer Day, Romania, 2012

  I'm on the way back from a great experience in Cluj, Romania: the Oracle Developer Day that was held here today. After the Oracle Developer Day in Warsaw, two days ago, I flew to Bucharest and then had to wait about 6 hours for the flight to Cluj. So I spent several of those hours in a taxi, with a very nice driver who showed me all over the place in Bucharest, such as the Palace of Parliament (according to Wikipedia, "the world's largest civilian building, most expensive administrative building, and heaviest building"): He also taught me a lot of Romanian. (My current phonetic-based vocabulary can be admired and/or ridiculed here.) Meeting Emilian Bold (third on the right below) from the NetBeans Dream Team was a definite highlight: The above shows the three speakers on the Java Track "preparing" for their sessions; me, Lukas Jungmann, and Emilian Bold. In Oracle's Gregor Rayman's keynote, this particular slide responded well to my NetBeans heart: The "Java Track" had sessions on Java EE 6, the NetBeans Platform, and Java Web Services, as well as "What's New in NetBeans IDE 7.1", where Emilian, shown in action below, outlined the NetBeans community, e.g., the NetBeans Dream Team and the NetBeans governance board. (But it was all in Romanian so I'm not really sure what was said exactly!) Finally, there was time to recover from the whole day, right before my trip back to Bucharest: All in all a great day! Looking forward to remaining in touch with the many people I met today.

He is the principal consultant at Kodewerk Ltd. He speaks frequently at conferences and co-authored the Ant Developer's Handbook. In the rapidly shifting world of information technology, Pepperdine, as much as anyone, keeps up with what's happening with Java performance tuning. Pepperdine will participate in the following sessions: CON5405 - Are Your Garbage Collection Logs Speaking to You? BOF6540 - Java Champions and JUG Leaders Meet Oracle Executives (with Jeff Genender, Mattias Karlsson, Henrik Stahl, Georges Saab) HOL6500 - Finding and Solving Java Deadlocks (with Heinz Kabutz, Ellen Kraffmiller Martijn Verburg, Jeff Genender, and Henri Tremblay) I asked him what technological changes need to be taken into account in performance tuning. “The volume of data we're dealing with just seems to be getting bigger and bigger all the time,” observed Pepperdine. “A couple of years ago you'd never think of needing a heap that was 64g, but today there are deployments where the heap has grown to 256g and tomorrow there are plans for heaps that are even larger. Dealing with all that data simply requires more horse power and some very specialized techniques. In some cases, teams are trying to push hardware to the breaking point. Under those conditions, you need to be very clever just to get things to work -- let alone to get them to be fast. We are very quickly moving from a world where everything happens in a transaction to one where if you were to even consider using a transaction, you've lost." When asked about the greatest misconceptions about performance tuning that he currently encounters, he said, “If you have a performance problem, you should start looking at code at the very least and for that extra step, whip out an execution profiler. I'm not going to say that I never use execution profilers or look at code. What I will say is that execution profilers are effective for a small subset of performance problems and code is literally the last thing you should look at.And what is the most exciting thing happening in the world of Java today? “Interesting question because so many people would say that nothing exciting is happening in Java. Some might be disappointed that a few features have slipped in terms of scheduling. But I'd disagree with the first group and I'm not so concerned about the slippage because I still see a lot of exciting things happening. First, lambda will finally be with us and with lambda will come better ways.” For JavaOne, he is proctoring for Heinz Kabutz's lab. “I'm actually looking forward to that more than I am to my own talk,” he remarked. “Heinz will be the third non-Sun/Oracle employee to present a lab and the first since Oracle began hosting JavaOne. He's got a great message. He's spent a ton of time making sure things are going to work, and we've got a great team of proctors to help out. After that, getting my talk done, the Java Champion's panel session and then kicking back and just meeting up and talking to some Java heads."Finally, what should Java developers know that they currently do not know? “’Write Once, Run Everywhere’ is a great slogan and Java has come closer to that dream than any other technology stack that I've used. That said, different hardware bits work differently and as hard as we try, the JVM can't hide all the differences. Plus, if we are to get good performance we need to work with our hardware and not against it. All this implies that Java developers need to know more about the hardware they are deploying to.”

• Announcing Spacewalk Support for Oracle Linux Basic and Premier Customers

  Over the years, customers migrating to Oracle Linux have asked for options to provide a transitional solution for their existing system management tools (such as Red Hat Satellite Server) while evaluating and planning migrations to Oracle's Enterprise Manager, which is offered at no additional charge with Oracle Linux Support Subscriptions.  Based on this request, we are pleased to announce support for the open-source community project, Spacewalk, which is the basis for both Red Hat Satellite Server and SUSE Manager.  Effective today, customers with Oracle Linux Basic and Premier Support subscriptions have access to a fully supported Spacewalk build which can be setup to easily manage Oracle Linux systems.   Spacewalk support for Oracle Linux requires Oracle Linux 6, x86_64 for the server and provides support for Oracle Linux 5 and Oracle Linux 6 (x86, x86_64) clients.  This solution requires Oracle Database 11g Release 2 as the  supported database repository for Spacewalk with Oracle Linux.  Within the next several weeks, a limited use license for the Oracle Database will be included with this offer.  Until this is complete, customers may use an existing Oracle database license or they may begin by downloading a 30-day trial license from eDelivery.  Customers with Oracle Linux Basic and Premier subscriptions will automatically have access to the channel hosting the supported build.  Please review the release notes for further instructions. Oracle Enterprise Manager is still the recommended enterprise solution for managing Oracle Linux systems and we want to provide the easiest transition path for our customers.  We are excited to offer this solution to our Oracle Linux customers while they plan and implement their migration to Oracle Enterprise Manager.

• UNHCR and Stanyslas Matayo Receive Duke's Choice Award 2012

  This year, NetBeans Platform applications winning Duke's Choice Awards were not only AgroSense, by Ordina in the Netherlands, and the air command and control system by NATO... but also Level One, the UNHCR registration and emergency management system. Unfortunately, Stanyslas Matayo, the architect and lead engineer of Level One, was unable to be at JavaOne to receive his award. It would have been really cool to meet him in person, of course, and he would have joined the NetBeans Party and NetBeans Day, as well as the NetBeans Platform panel discussions that happened at various stages throughout JavaOne. Instead, he received his award at Oracle Day 2012 Nairobi, some days ago, where he presented Level One and received the Duke's Choice Award: Level One is the UNHCR (UN refugee agency) application for capturing information on the first level details of refugees in an emergency context. In its recently released initial version, the application was used in Niger to register information about families in emergency contexts. Read more about it here and see the screenshot below. • A new SQL, a new Analysis Services, a new Workshop! #ssas #sql2012

  One week ago Microsoft SQL Server 2012 finally debuted with a virtual launch event and you can find many intro sessions there (20 minutes each). There is a lot of new content available if you want to learn more about SQL 2012 and in this blog post I’d like to provide a few link to sessions, documents, bits and courses that are available now or very soon. First of all, the release of Analysis Services 2012 has finally released PowerPivot 2012 (many of us called it PowerPivot v2 before this official name) and also the new Data Mining Add-in for Microsoft Office 2010, now available also for Excel 64bit! And, of course, don’t miss the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Feature Pack, there are a lot of upgrades for both DBAs and developers. I just discovered there is a new LocalDB version of SQL Express that can run in user mode without any setup. Is this the end of SQL CE? But now, back to Analysis Services: if you want some tutorial on Tabular, the Microsoft Virtual Academy has a whole track dedicated to Analysis Services 2012 but you will probably be interested also in the one about Reporting Services 2012. If you think that virtual is good but it’s not enough, there are plenty of conferences in the coming months – these are just those where I and Alberto will deliver some SSAS Tabular presentations: SQLBits X, London, March 29-31, 2012: if you are in London or want a good reason to go, this is the most important SQL Server event in Europe this year, no doubts about it. And not only because of the high number of attendees, but also because there is an impressive number of speakers (excluding me, of course) coming from all over the world. This is an event second only to PASS Summit in Seattle so there are no good reasons to not attend it. Microsoft SQL Server & Business Intelligence Conference 2012, Milan, March 28-29, 2012: this is an Italian conference so the language might be a barrier, but many of us also speak English and the food is good! TechEd North America, Orlando, June 11-14, 2012: you know, this is a big event and it contains everything – if you want to spend a whole day learning the SSAS Tabular model with me and Alberto, don’t miss our pre-conference day “Using BISM Tabular in Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services 2012” (be careful, it is on June 10, a nice study-Sunday!). TechEd Europe, Amsterdam, June 26-29, 2012: the European version of TechEd provides almost the same content and you don’t have to go overseas. We also run the same pre-conference day “Using BISM Tabular in Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services 2012” (in this case, it is on June 25, that’s a regular Monday). If it's a data table, you must use a heading for each column, and you should format this heading row as "table heading" style and select Table > Heading Rows Repeat.• For non data tables, it is not necessary to include a heading row.GraphicsTo create accessible graphics, add a caption to the graphic. In Microsoft Office 2000 and greater, right-click on the graphic and select Format Picture > Web (tab) > Alternative Text or select the graphic then Format > Picture > Web (tab) Alternative Text.   One week ago Microsoft SQL Server 2012 finally debuted with a virtual launch event and you can find many intro sessions there (20 minutes each). There is a lot of new content available if you want to learn more about SQL 2012 and in this blog post I’d like to provide a few link to sessions, documents, bits and courses that are available now or very soon. First of all, the release of Analysis Services 2012 has finally released PowerPivot 2012 (many of us called it PowerPivot v2 before this official name) and also the new Data Mining Add-in for Microsoft Office 2010, now available also for Excel 64bit! And, of course, don’t miss the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Feature Pack, there are a lot of upgrades for both DBAs and developers. I just discovered there is a new LocalDB version of SQL Express that can run in user mode without any setup. Is this the end of SQL CE? But now, back to Analysis Services: if you want some tutorial on Tabular, the Microsoft Virtual Academy has a whole track dedicated to Analysis Services 2012 but you will probably be interested also in the one about Reporting Services 2012. If you think that virtual is good but it’s not enough, there are plenty of conferences in the coming months – these are just those where I and Alberto will deliver some SSAS Tabular presentations: SQLBits X, London, March 29-31, 2012: if you are in London or want a good reason to go, this is the most important SQL Server event in Europe this year, no doubts about it. And not only because of the high number of attendees, but also because there is an impressive number of speakers (excluding me, of course) coming from all over the world. • Parleys Testimonial at GlassFish Community Event, JavaOne 2012

  Parleys.com is an e-learning platform that provide a unique experience of online and offline viewing presentations, with integrated movies and chaptering, from the top notch developer conferences and about 40 JUGs all around the world. Stephan Janssen (the Devoxx man and Parleys webmaster) presented at the GlassFish Community Event at JavaOne 2012 and shared why they moved from Tomcat to GlassFish. The move paid off as GlassFish was able to handle 2000 concurrent users very easily. Now they are also running Devoxx CFP and registration on this updated infrastructure. The GlassFish clustering, the asadmin CLI, application versioning, and JMS implementation are some of the features that made them a happy user. Recently they migrated their application from Spring to Java EE 6. This allows them to get locked into proprietary frameworks and also avoid 40MB WAR file deployments. Stateless application, JAX-RS, MongoDB, and Elastic Search is their magical forumla for success there. • 2012 Exadata & Manageability Partner Communities EMEA Forum - Istanbul, Turkey

  On March 14-15th we have celebrated our 2012 Exadata & Manageability Partner Communities EMEA Forum, in Istanbul, Turkey. It has been an intense two days, packed with great content and a lot of networking. Organizing the Manageability and the Exadata Partner Forums jointly has allowed participants to benefit from the content of both topcis, which have strong connections as the journey to cloud architectures request that the cloud infrastructures are built on the best building blocks and are managed automatically and in a self-service way. During the sessions we have listened to two thought-leaders in our industry, Ron Tolido, from Capgemini, and Julian Dontcheff, from Accenture. We thank our Exadata partners -ISE (Germany), Inserve (Sweden), Fors (Russia), Linkplus (Turkey) and Sogeti, for sharing with the community their experiences in selling and implementing Exadata and Manageability projects.
