• Nagios SSH remote checks and WMI Check

  I have install Nagios Core and I am using WMI Checks for Windows and Created a script to execute remote commands through ssh on my Linux machines. When Installing Nagios there is an option to run NsClient++, but I went with the WMI Checks because it is agent less. What are the advantages of using NsClient++ for Nagios? Also would calling too many commands through WMI or SSH hinder the performance of the remote host?

  I am using RealVNC 4.5 Enterprise on my Windows 7 client. I use this to connect to a remote system which is also running RealVNC 4.5 (on Windows 7 again). And then i logoff the remote system (server) and all of a sudden the realvnc viewer on the client closes with the message : "Read/Select:Connection reset by peer (10054)" It also asks if i want to reconnect again. Any idea why this is happening and how do i resolve this?

• Volume widget issue with sound card hotplugging

  When plugging a USB sound card may sometimes cause the current audio output (ie. Banshee and PC speakers) to switch immediately. But the volume controls (sound widget in systray, volume keyboard keys) are stuck on the old sound card. Plug a soundcard and amplifier while the volume is set to ultra high for the pc speakers. You can't control the volume without opening the sound settings or alsamixer. This could probably cause neighbour disturbance in some countries. You can't control it with the sound widget of the systray nor the volume keyboard keys. How to disable auto switch of hardware audio output, or enable auto switch of software volume controls ? It would be great to make the software behaviour consistent with the hardware's. Ubuntu 11.10 vanilla up to date.

  I want to define bash functions and aliases in my remote shell automatically on login. I can't put the definitions into .profile or similar because the users I log in as are often shared with others who use the same systems and I don't have control of this. What I'm trying to do is execute a few bash function definitions in the remote process and then continue as a login shell. • Cache-control for permanent 301 redirects nginx

  I was wondering if there is a way to control lifetime of the redirects in Nginx? We would liek to cache 301 redirects in CDN for specific amount of time, let say 20 minutes and the CDN is controlled by the standard caching headers. By default there is no Cache-control or Expires directives with the Nginx redirect. That could cause the redirect to be cached for a really long time. By having specific redirect lifetime the system could have a chance to correct itself, knowing that even "permanent" redirect change from time to time.. The other thing is that those redirects are included from the Server block, which according the nginx specification should be evaluated before locations. I tried to add add_header Cache-Control "max-age=1200, public"; to the bottom of the redirects file, but the problem is that Cache-control gets added twice - first comes let say from the backend script and the other one added by the add_header directive.. In Apache there is the environment variable trick to control headers for rewrites: RewriteRule /taxonomy/term/(\d+)/feed /taxonomy/term/$1 [R=301,E=expire:1] Header always set Cache-Control "store, max-age=1200" env=expire But I'm not sure how to accomplish this in Nginx.

• Should Git be used for documentation and project management? Should the code be in a separate repository?

  I'm starting up a Git repository for a group project. Does it make sense to store documents in the same Git repository as code - it seems like this conflicts with the nature of the git revision flow. Here is a summary of my question(s): Is the Git revisioning style going to be confusing if both code and documents are checked into the same repository? Experiences with this? Is Git a good fit for documentation revision control? I am NOT asking if a Revision Control System in general should or shouldn't be used for documentation - it should.   Very recently I have started to write python scripts that need to connect few databases on mySQL server. The problem is that when I work from office my script works fine but running a script from my home while on office VPN generates connection error. I also noticed the mySQL client Squirrel also cannot connect from my home but works fine on Office computer. I think both are giving problem for the same reason.   Obviously, the easiest way to solve a bug is to be able to reproduce it in house. However, sometimes that is not practical. For starters, users are often not very good at providing you with useful information. Costumer Service: "what seems to be the issue?" User: "It crashed!" To further compound that, sometimes the bug only occurs under certain environmentally conditions that can not be adequately replicated in house. With that in mind, it is important to build some sort of diagnostic framework into your product. What type of solutions have you seen or used in your experience? Logging seems to be the predominate method, which makes sense. We have a fairly sophisticated logging frame work in place with different levels of verbosity and the ability to filter on specific modules (actually we can filter down to the granularity of a single file). Error logs are placed strategically to manufacture a pretty good representation of a stack trace when an error occurs. We don't have the luxury of 10 million terabytes of disk space since I work on embedded platforms, so we have two ways of getting them off the system: a serial port and a syslog server. However, an issue we run into sometimes is actually getting the user to turn the logs on. Our current framework often requires some user interaction.

This feature works in other projects, but this time is failing when trying to save the file to the remote server. • Remote GDM login

  Is it possible to remotely (via ssh) make a login to GDM? I'll explain a situation in which I'd need this: I'm on my laptop and connect to my desktop via ssh. I realize there are some updates available. I install them all, but I need to reboot the computer. The problem is that once the desktop has rebooted, there will be no GDM session available, since it's necessary to log in. Can I somehow perform the GDM login remotely from my laptop? Edit: I can't find FreeNX for Maverick, and I haven't been able to configure x11vnc + vncviewer to work. Isn't there an easy way?

• Is there an easy way to configure an Ubuntu system to function as a proxy/file server from behind an NAT?

  Sorry for the long question, but the situation/desire is quite complex. Here is my setup: I have a laptop which I carry around everywhere and I have a desktop sitting at home, connected to the internet through a router using NAT. My objective is to create a connection from my laptop to my desktop that can allow me to (in order of priority): Use the desktop as a proxy server Access files on the desktop remotely Control said desktop from the laptop using VNC or similar. Now here is the scene. I have already looked up and tried several ways to achieve the above goals. Teamviewer - I used it and didn't like it. This is not an option. SSH - This seems ideal, I have figured a way to use this for both proxy and file sharing. However, I am currently unable to connect it due to the NAT. I have a separate thread trying to get that to work here. VPN - I've figured out how to use this method for proxy, but not file sharing. However this faces the same problem as the above: I can't get it to connect through the NAT. Does anyone have any other solutions for what I want? Otherwise, if there are solutions to connecting through the NAT, please tell me (in the other thread). Thanks

  I'm using Unity 3D Let's say the player is an ice cube. You control it like a normal player. On press of a button, ice transforms (with animation) into water. You control it completely different than the ice cube. Another great example would be: Player is human being and has normal FPS controls. On press of a button human transforms into birds and now has completely different controls. Now, my question is, what would be easier and better: make one object with animation transition and to stay in that state of anim. until button is pressed again make two object: ice and water. Ice has an animation of turning into water. So replace ice (with animation) with water object And if anyone knows this one too: how to switch between 2 different types of player controls.

  sometimes the sound of videos isn't enough for me. so i reach the sound indicator , over sound preferences and change it to a level higher than 100%. the question is how can i do it from the keyboard? now i can control the volume from the keyboard but it's maximum is 100%. is there a way to do that? EDIT 1: how to use amixer to do it? (as Lyrositor suggested) EDIT2: the closest answer , as Jo-erland, suggested is to set a hotkey to bring up the gnome-volume-control, and then to use left and right arrows to change volume also beyond the 100% mark. any other suggestions, to make this 1 step only? is it possible to set a hotkey to do a sequence of commands ?

  I have one computer running Ubuntu 10.04, and is running Vino, the default VNC server. I have a second Windows box which is running a VNC client, but does not have any X11 capabilities. I am ssh'd into the Ubuntu host from the Windows host, but I forgot to enable VNC access on the Ubuntu host. On the Ubuntu host, is there a way for me to enable VNC connections from the Ubuntu commandline? Update: As @koanhead says below, there is no man page for vino (e.g. man -k vino and info vino return nothing), and vino --help doesn't show any help).

• Mount drive on remote machine

  My current set up is: I have my main machine (Darkseid) upstairs which has a drive with all my films on it, which I don't keep mounted. Downstairs, next to the tv, I have a htpc (Archangel) which has xbmc installed on it, which points to a samba share on the main machine. Everything works fine when the drive is mounted, but is there a script I can write to send a command to the upstairs machine from the downstairs machine to mount the drive to save the walk upstairs? #lazy Both machines are Ubuntu 12.04

  My client asked me that a website that is hosted in one server (and pointing there through a domain) should also be accessed (into a specific directory) from another domain, which is not pointing there. For example: http://www.foo.com, hosted at GoDaddy, with the full website http://www.bar.com, hosted at Bluehost, needs to access http://www.foo.com/bar, as if it was the http://www.bar.com's root. So, if anybody enters through http://www.bar.com, it should internally load http://www.foo.com/bar, without visually changing the url. I amb not sure if this is possible using .htaccess or anything like this. Could anybody show me some light? Thanks in advance

  I'm doing the following to mount a remote server to a specific path on my server: sshfs [email protected]:/backup/folder/ /home/myuser/server-backups/ However when I mount the server the folder permissions change (they become 700), and when I test my rsnapshot.conf file I get the following error: snapshot_root /home/myuser/server-backups/ - snapshot_root exists \ but is not readable What am I doing wrong ? should I mount the remote server with another user ?
