• Is it possible to remove/hide Windows title bars?

  I'm very used to my Linux desktop, but in my new job I'm forced to use Windows. For efficiency, I'm veeery used to minimize/maximize using keyboard shortcuts and move/resize windows using alt+mouse. Thus, window titlebars and borders are useless, and I can remove them using Compiz. My question is: is this remotely possible to be done in Windows Vista? I could manage to quite reduce the borders, but the titlebars still bother me. I also found that Win+M minimizes a window, and I think that would help with the shortcuts also. As a help to understand how I'm used to live, here's a completely normal [reduced] window of my home computer:

  Is there a way to remove windows line endings on a basic windows 7 install. I'm working on a windows 7 computer with notepad and word 2010 at work. I'm trying to demo markdown without installing additional text editor, and keeping it installed locally. I've tried Word with replace on \r\n, special characters and other ways and it can't locate. Notepad same issue. Or is there a markdown converter that an online markdown converter that will handle windows line endings?

  Windows 8.1 upgrade created a second recovery partition. Can I remove the original? Prior to this the partitions were Recovery, EFI, OS(C:), Data(D:). After the upgrade partitions are Recovery, EFI, OS(C:), Recovery, Data(D:). The first Recovery partition is 1023MB the second is 350MB The "Create a system image" tool selects the EFI, OS(C:), and the second 350MB Recovery partitions. The first 1023MB Recovery partition is not listed, I have to "assume" it is now redundant. The factory (HP) Recovery Partition was removed using the HP provided tool after creating recovery disks, and the D: partition created months ago.

  We have a lab with multiple RedHat EL5 machines running the Gnome desktop environment. When developers are done using the machine sometimes they miss the logout button and click the Shutdown button by mistake (easy to do, I've done it myself). Needless to say, for those remoted into the lab it's sometimes devastating. Is there a way to remove the Shutdown entry for all users from the Gnome menu? Note: I do not mean Shutdown on the greeter, but the Shutdown button on the menu drop down that is next to logout, sleep, etc.

  I've restored a database which came from a server on which Slony was running. The server on which the database has been restored does not have Slony installed. When the database restored, there were a lot of errors reported, with Slony related objects not getting created due to Slony related logins being missing. This I thought was not a problem, as losing the Slony objects didn't seem to matter, and infact seemed desirable. However, now I've got an anoying, if not critical problem. Whenever one clicks on a table in the newly restored DB in PGAdmin, a Slony related error popup ... pops up. The first one reads: "An error has occured: ERROR: function _rmscl.getlocalnodeid(unknown) does not exist" I notice that under the Replication node in PGAdmin, that there is a Slony replication cluster. Trying to drop this cluster results in more object missing type errors. Does anyone have any ideas how we can remove the last vestiges of Slony from this database?

  This is the opposite of this question. Basically I've been using Ubuntu for a while but decided to give KDE a shot so I went through the process of getting the latest KDE installed. I'm very impressed with KDE and the Kwin window manager seems like a better WM than Compiz which is what I was using for Gnome (sure that's an oppinion). This was an Ubuntu Jaunty install. So how do I go about removing the Gnome desktop? Is there an automated way similar to what my previous question covered? UPDATE: Should there be any packages I should NOT remove in the process?

  I tried to add a network printer at www.xxx.yyy.zzz, but halfway it when it asked for a driver, I cancelled it because I do not have the driver at hand. Later when I try to add again, it tells me the port (www.xxx.yyy.zzz), which is automatically specified as the same as the IP for the printer, is already in use and then suggest www.xxx.yyy.zzz_1 Now, I cannot find the www.xxx.yyy.zzz printer anywhere such that I can remove it and use back the same port.   How can I the remove DRM from books I have purchased for my Kindle? A solution that works on Mac OS X and/or Linux would be ideal, but a Windows-only solution is also acceptable. Moral aside: I do not plan to share or pirate books; I am very happy with the Amazon Kindle store and have purchased more books from there since getting my Kindle a month ago than I had in the previous two years. However, I do not feel comfortable keeping them in an encrypted format that only a single company's software will allow me to access. I may also want to convert them into a format for other readers in the future, which is not possible without first removing the DRM.

However I recently updated to Windows 8.1 and it forces you to use a microsoft account. I did not want to create an account so one of my friends used his and I logged in. After logging in all the friend's details like apps, wallpaper, lock screen, search mechanism, when I use search i see the friends facebook friends popping up. it is really annoying. • Presentation software requires admin rights to install - any way to remove this requirement?

  I have some wireless presentation software which I use in a meeting room in order to allow end users to hold presentations here and wirelessly have their laptop screens showing on the TV on the wall. Unfortunately the .exe file requires admin rights to install therefore requiring that either the user requests temporary admin rights beforehand, I install it using my admin account or that we use a VGA/HDMI cable. Is there a way to remove the admin right requirement from a .exe or a .msi file so that it can be installed freely by any user? We are using XP for now but will be moving to 7 soon. Thanks James

Files may have changed since they were created, so searching according to last modification date is not good.   Whenever I log into a server using ssh. The prompt gives me "last login" information. I was wondering where this information comes from. How can I remove this record so when someone else log into the same server, the person would see my login info with my ip in it? So how can I do this? For the record, I am not hacking someone's computer and the server runs Ubuntu 12.04. EDIT: which file logs this kind of information? If I find the file, then I can do anything to it as root.   I like being able to run commands straight from my Task Bar. So, I've enabled the Address toolbar on my new Windows 7 system - just like I had on my old XP system. However, the bar seems to have a mandatory minimum length (I've posted a separate question about that) that's a bit longer than I'd prefer. Additionally, a bit more horizontal space is consumed by a Refresh button at the end of it. This Refresh button appears similar to the Go button that used to show by default in older versions. That button was easily removed by changing a registry value that doesn't seem to exist in Windows 7. Is there a similar registry hack I can use to remove the new Refresh button?

  The background for this question: I currently have to do a lot of my work in terminal over ssh, and I use screen quite a bit. Because I found the ctrl-a key binding for screen commands so annoying since I'm accustomed to using ctrl-a to go to the beginning of a line, I changed it to ctrl-z. The only problem with this is that when I'm in Matlab, think I am in Screen but am not, pressing ctrl-z will instantly kill my Matlab session, because ctrl-z is the key binding for suspending processes in *nix. So the question is: can I remove the key binding for ctrl-z in my shell so that it does no longer suspend a process? My shell is terminal.app on OSX.

  [Originally posted this to opscode forum, got no response] I’m testing out a free hosted chef-server account and multiple subcommands are failing with ‘Unexpected Errors’. Perhaps my version and the server version are incompatible? OS: Ubuntu 12.04LTS Local Chef: 10.12.0 (Installed through gem) Local Ruby: 1.8.7 Also, the workstation machine has been manually configured, but the client(s) I’ve been experimenting with are launched with the Rackspace plugin (using ‘knife rackspace server create…’) The problem commands seem to fail when talking to the host chef-server, however, before it ever tries to modify the client, so I don’t believe that’s where the problem exists. The virtual-servers that are launched by ‘knife rackspace server create’ are launched properly but then deleting them with knife fails. If I include a recipe in the run_list when I create the server, the recipe is properly added to the run_list. If I try to add it later or remove the one that there server was initialized with, those commands fail.   It's not possible to remove it using the standard extension disablement/removal features in Chrome - the checkbox is disabled. I also found that the extension gets installed under C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\ - tried to delete it there, but it's still active. In fact, I tried deleting the whole C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\ directory, but the next time Chrome starts, it recreates it and the extension gets recreated. Seems like there is something running in Windows that keeps detecting that Chrome extension is not there anymore and reinstates it. Any ideas how to get rid of it?

  I have a couple of collections of DVD Box-Sets I've ripped to my mac. Now I'd like to sweeten the viewing experience by removing the title sequences and credits so that viewing doesn't mean I have to keep reaching for the remote to skip 30 seconds of annoying music (think watching multiple episodes of Family Guy). If I can find an app that will let me do this reasonably quickly manually that would be great, but it would be perfect if I could dump a load of commands into a file and have everything trimmed while the mac is "inactive". I'm thinking that if I can specify chunks of time to remove from the original file that would be perfect. I had a quick look at importing into iMovie to do it manually and gave up at the "Processing Thumbnails" stage as it said it would be a couple of hours to produce them for a 45min mp4 file, which I can understand at 25fps but I'm not willing to wait, especially when I've got over a week's worth of files. Any suggestions?

• How do I remove Lenovo Veriface from the login screen?

  I have a Lenovo laptop which came preloaded with Windows 7. Every time I start the computer and get to the Windows log-in screen (where you enter the user password) I get a message about Veriface software giving me the option to use it. I'd like to disable this. I went over the Program's settings and there is nothing that allows you to disable it from loading with Windows. Also, I thought that it might be a service to disable, but I don't see it in the list of services, nor is it in the list of start-up Processes (either in msconfig or in the registry). I'm considering uninstalling it completely, but since it's a part of the lenovo software pack that came with the computer and I do use some of these software, I'm not sure if uninstalling it might also remove wanted things (and uninstalling and reinstalling if needed seems like a mess). Anybody know if there's an easy way to achieve this?
