  I'm not sure if I should be asking this here or on StackOverflow, but here goes: I'm part of a team maintaining a document management application, and I'm trying to figure out Windows file locking permissions. We use a utility somebody downloaded years ago called psunlock to remotely close all locks on a file. We recently discovered that this does not work across different domains on our VPN. A little bit of digging lead me to the samba manual's discussion of file locking. I still don't really "get it", though. Does anyone have any insight to share into how the process of locking and breaking locks on files works in a network context? My thinking is that privileges are required both on the file appliance and on the client workstations which hold locks. Is that accurate? Can anyone give a more specific version? Ideally I'm looking for something along the lines of A user must have privilege level X in order to break locks held from a client workstation. In practice I'd be happy with a hotlink to a good white paper on the subject.

  I have a .net4 web application running in a 64 bits 2008 server. I can only get it to run when I set the app pool to Enable 32-bits application to true. All dlls are compiled for .net4 (verified with corflags.exe). How can I figure out why Enable 32-bit is required? • Is execution of sync(8) still required before shutting down linux?

  I still see people recommend use of "sync; sync; sync; sleep 30; halt" incantations when talking about shutting down or rebooting Linux. I've been running Linux since its inception and although this was the recommended procedure in the BSD 4.2/4.3 and SunOS 4 days, I can't recall that I had to do that for at least the last ten years, during which I probably went through shutdown/reboot of Linux maybe thousands of times. I suspect that this is an anachronism since the days that the kernel couldn't unmount and sync the root filesystem and other critical filesystems required even during single-user mode (e.g. /tmp), and therefore it was necessary to tell it explicitly to flush as much data as it can to disk. These days, without finding the relevant code in the kernel source yet (digging through http://lxr.linux.no and google), I suspect that the kernel is smart enough to cleanly unmount even the root filesystem and the filesystem is smart enough to effectively do a sync(2) before unmounting itself during a normal "shutdown"/"reboot"/"poweorff". The "sync; sync; sync" is only necessary in extreme cases where the filesystem won't unmount cleanly (e.g. physical disk failure) or the system is in a state that only forcing a direct reboot(8) will get it out of its freeze (e.g. the load is too high to let it schedule the shutdown command). I also never do the "sync" procedure before unmounting removable devices, and never hit a problem. Another example - Xen allows the DomU to be sent a "shutdown" command from the Dom0, this is considered a "clean shutdown" without anyone having to login and type the magical "sync; sync; sync" first. Am I right or was I lucky for a few thousands of system shutdowns?

• Which steps are required to avoid my server being considered as spam sender?

  I'm looking to set up a webmail server that will be used by a lots of users that will receive and send emails. They will also have the possibility to forward emails they receive. I'd like to know which steps are recommanded/required to indicate to others Mail services (GMail, Outlook, etc) that my server is not used as a spam sender (disclaimer : IT's NOT ! :p) but a legitimate one. I know I have to define a SPF TXT records for example, but what others steps would you recommend me to do ? For example, is there a formula like having a proportional number of servers based on the amount of email sent (for having a different IP address) ? (something like sending a maximum of 1M emails / per IP / per day ?) Something else I'm missing ? I tried to search online, but I mostly find how to avoid emails sent with scripts (like PHP) being put in the SPAM folder. I'm looking for a server/dns configuration side.   I wonder if a modem is required to be programmed when using with an internet provider? If yes, what is the purpose of programming a modem? Do both a DSL and a cable ISP both require a modem to be used in an individual home? For example, I have a Motorola modem SURFboard Model:SB5101, Customer S/N: xxx S/N? xxx HFC MAC ID: xxx USB CPE MAC ID: xxx a coil of cable and a splitter from Comcast High-Speed internet Self-Installation Kit, which were bought 5 years ago, when I purchased Comcast internet service from its retailer www.comcastoffers.com. With them, I was hoping to reduce the amount of fee by avoiding to ask Comcast people to come over to install. But I remember at that time Comcast sent its technician here, dismissed my idea of self-installation, saying they needed to use their own modem and charging me a hefty fee, and so my equipments have never been used. I haven't been using Comcast for a long time. I wonder if my modem, cable and splitter (brand new, never used) are still good to use with an internet provider such as Comcast? If needed, we can ignore their policy and just consider the technology side? Or they are not good to use and I must throw them away like trash? Thanks and regards!

  I have an Excel spreadsheet. I am connecting to an Access database via ODBC. Set oQuery = oConn.CreateQueryDef("tmpQuery") oQuery.Sql = "SELECT idField, memoField FROM myTable" Set oRs = oQuery.OpenRecordset The problem now arises. My field is a dbMemo because the maximum content length is up to a few hundred chars. It's not that long, and in fact the value I'm reading is only a dozen characters. But Excel just doesn't seem able to handle the Memo field content at all. My code... ActiveCell = oRs.Fields("memoField") ...gives error Run-time error '3146': ODBC--call failed. Any suggestions? Can Excel VBA actually get at memo field data? Or is it just completely impossible. I get exactly the same error from GetChunk as well. ActiveCell = oRs.Fields("memoField").GetChunk(0, 2) ...also gives error Run-time error '3146': ODBC--call failed. Converting to a text field makes everything work fine. However some data is truncated to 255 characters of course, which means that isn't a workable solution.

  I have a legacy schema that cannot be changed. I am using a base class for the common features and it contains an embedded object. There is a field that is normally mapped in the embedded object that needs to be in the persistence id for only one (of many) subclasses. I have made a new id class that includes it but then I get the error that the field is mapped twice. Here is some example code that is much simplified to maintain the sanity of the reader: @MappedSuperclass class BaseClass { @Embedded private Data data; } @Entity class SubClass extends BaseClass { @EmbeddedId private SubClassId id; } @Embeddable class Data { private int location; private String name; } @Embeddable class SubClassId { private int thingy; private int location; } I have tried @AttributeOverride but I can only get it to rename the field. I have tried to set it to updatable = false, insertable = false but this did not seem to work when used in the @AttributeOverride annotation. See answer below for the solution to this issue. I realise I could change the base class but I really do not want to split up the embedded object to separate the shared field as it would make the surrounding code more complex and require some ugly wrapping code. I could also redesign the whole system for this corner case but I would really rather not. I am using Hibernate as my JPA provider.

  I'm using the better_exposed_filters module to create a set of exposed filters for a view. One of the filters is being displayed as a select field, and I would like the field to only display options that are actually associated with content in the database. Currently, I am doing this using the hook_form_alter() method. I'm open to an entirely different way of weeding out filter options, if need be, or a way that I can figure out how to address that error.

One of the criteria I need is the read/unread status of an message. But the "field" dropdown does not contain a field corresponding to read/unread status (see screen shot below). This is odd because the read/unread status is available in the "More Choices" tab, but seemingly not in the "advanced" tab. How do I create an advanced search folder criteria which incorporates the read/unread status of a message?

  Is it possible to update an infopath field with the result of a call to submit to a webservice? We have an infopath form used to create items in the database. I would like to add a read only field for the id (primary key) of the item in the infopath form which is filled when the form is submitted to the webservice by the return value. Is there a way to use the return value as part of a rule with a "Set a field's value" action? I could not find a way to do this with rules gui. Is it possible to do this using c# code? Or am I missing something in the GUI?

  I'm looking at an inherited SSIS package, and a stored procedure is sending records to a recordset called USER:NEW_RECORDS. It's of type Object, and the value is System.Object. It is then used for inputting that data to a SQL table. We're getting an error, because it seems that the numeric results of the stored procedure are being put in a DT_WSTR field, and then failing when it is then put into a decimal field in the database. Most of the records are working, but one, which happens to have a longer number of decimal digits, is failing. I want to see exactly what my SSIS recordset field types are, and probably change them, so I can force the data to be truncated properly and copied. Or, perhaps, I'm not even looking at this correctly. The data is put into the recordset using a SQL Task that executes the stored procedure.

  I just came across a query that does an inner join on a non-distinct field. I've never seen this before and I'm a little confused about this usage. Something like: SELECT distinct all, my, stuff FROM myTable INNER JOIN myOtherTable ON myTable.nonDistinctField = myOtherTable.nonDistinctField (WHERE some filters here...) I'm not quite sure what my question is or how to phrase it, or why exactly this confuses me, but I was wondering if anyone could explain why someone would need to do an inner join on a non-distinct field and then select only distinct values...? Is there ever a legitimate use of an inner join on a non-distinct field? What would be the purpose? And if there's is a legitimate reason for such a query, can you give examples of where it would be used?

  In SQL, it is obvious that whenever we want to do a search on millions of record, say CustomerID in a Transactios table, then we want to add an index for CustomerID. Is another situation we want to add an index to a field when we need to do inner join or outer join using that field as a criteria? Such as Inner join on t1.custumerID = t2.customerID. Then if we don't have an index on customerID on both tables, we are looking at O(n^2) because we need to loop through the 2 tables sequentially. If we have index on customerID on both tables, then it becomes O( (log n) ^ 2 ) and it is much faster. Any other situation where we want to add an index to a field in a table? What about adding index for 2 fields combined in a table. That is, one index, for 2 fields together?

However, after I refreshed, the new column was blank even though I know it has data. The view is refreshing successfully, but the new field is still blank. What else is there to add this new column to this view? Heres my current query which finds if the phrase does occur SELECT pads.padid, pads.programname, keywords.word FROM Pads JOIN keywords ON Pads.Padid = keywords.Padid WHERE pads.Programname = keywords.word AND RemoveMeDate = '2001-01-01 00:00:00' My problem is that the field word contains other words too. I need to produce a count of where there isn't a keywords record with keywords.word equal to pads.programname ?   Our webapp has a form with fields and values that change depending on values entered. Each time there is a change event on one of the form elements, we use an expensive AJAX call to update other elements on the page. This works great for selects, radio buttons and checkboxes. The issue comes in when a user adds content to a text field, and then clicks a link without taking the focus from the text field. The browser moves to a new page, and the contents of the text field are never saved. Is there an easy way to code around this? The AJAX call is too expensive to call with each key press. I have over 40,000 artists in this table. So, I'd like to convert all artists names to search friendly. What is the best way to accomplish this? Not looking for code here, just ideas.
