• How is network mounted software executed?

  I would like to understand how network mounted software works. For example, at my place of work, we have a software server. Each client machine (hundreds of them) automatically mounts directories from the software server on boot. For example, a program like Matlab is installed just once on the software server, but each client machine can start up an instance of Matlab. What is going on under the hood? Let's say I run /opt/bin/matlab and /opt/ is mounted from the software server, what happens when I press Enter to execute matlab on a client machine? The process is on the client machine, and I've already narrowed down that there isn't any implicit or hidden file transfer (i.e. copying matlab to my machine temporarily for that session) by running matlab on a computer with nearly zero disk space (i.e. not enough room to transfer). Since Matlab was installed on the server, how is my client computer executing it? What mechanism is controlling this? What is happening behind the scenes?

  I have one analog monitor connected through dvi adapter one digital monitor connected through dvi tv connected through hdmi I'm unable to run all 3 at the same time, when I try to extend desktop it asks me to disable one of the monitors so I can only have 2 at one time. I tried finding solution but according to some forums I should be able to achieve it since one is analog I should be able to run 3 outputs with hdmi that way. Does any one have any suggestions? • How to set up Pegasus Mail in non-admin account?

  I'm using Pegasus Mail for my mail client, and on my old computer (XP Pro), I could log in as the guest or admin account and it would still work. I recently got a new computer, with XP Pro, and I've set the mail client to work fine when I log in to the admin account, but when I log into the guest account, it always wants the SMTP, POP, and other connection information. How do I get it to remember that? I tried making an admin account, setting it up, and then downgrading that account, but that didn't work either. Does anyone even use PMail?

• Deploying Sharepoint Features in a Load Balanced Environment

  Last night we deployed a new set of Sharepoint features to a load balanced environment. For some reason the new features are on 1 box but are not showing in the sharepoint sites on the others. We have 4 servers and we deployed to them by pulling 1 server out of rotation, stopping the app pool and deploying our new code and the new features. Then we would fire it back up and add it to the rotation. For the remaining servers we would only remove the server from rotation, stop the app pool, and deploy the code, NOT the features, then fire it back up and add it to the rotation. Any thoughts on why the features are not showing up on the other servers? Also, any thoughts on forcing the features to show up? Thanks in advance.

• Best server OS for running up-to date software

  I need to configure a server (*nix) that runs our (bespoke) CMS and Applications. In the bast I have defaulted to using Cent OS 5, but I find this difficult to upgrade the software to the versions we require. For example, we need PHP 5.3, but CentOS 5 has 5.2. Updating is fine but breaks something else (normally MySQL support in PHP). Eventually it will get to a situation where I can't upgrade because of missing dependancies and incompatible versions. Error: Missing Dependency: httpd = 2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3 is needed by package httpd-devel-2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3.i386 (updates) Is there a better alternative OS for hassle free updates, I need: Apache 2.2.17 (the development version for apxs) MySQL 5.5.8 PHP 5.3.5

• Any good resources on setting up an ubuntu virtual machine for web development?

  I'm currently on my placement year at uni with 4 months left. Before working at my current place, I have not used a nix environment for web development and have used WAMP. Over the past year I have found some very interesting new tech that requires a bit more than my shared hosting even to play with (eg node.js, RoR 3). At work we use a Virtual Machine for development, but that's all been set up and configured to match the live servers, and is managed with a Puppet server. Are there any really good resources for setting up and configuring an Ubuntu VM as a web server? Work currently uses Ubuntu so I would assume this is a good OS to use. I do of course know how to use google, but the noise ratio is just too big, so thought I'd ask here, as I know many of you will have a ton of bookmarks. Cheers.

• Upgrade manually-installed msi by assigning software through gpo

  In the past I rolled out software by manually installing it on a "golden" workstation, creating an (ghost)image from that and rolling that out to the other workstations. I try not to do that any more for simple/small software, and when possible (if it's an .msi) I assign the software through gpo. I'm having a problem with one of those. The software was manually installed on the image, which was rolled out, and now I have an update for that software (new msi) and I'd like to assign it through gpo. Don't know if it's relevant but it's user assigned. The new version gets installed alongside with the old version (this is possible since the program folder is different between those versions). When I install the same msi by hand, it properly removes/upgrades the old version though. Is what I am trying to do possible?

  nsd3 is very little-known but super-lightweight and stable DNS server which makes it a great alternative to bind9 be used on low-end boxes. There is a very good tutorial here that describe how to set it up. My problem is that I need to set up a subdomain subd1.example.com that will be severed on another VPS. I tried to add subdmn1.mymaindomain.com. IN 1.2.3.5 (Assuming that my destination IP is 1.2.3.5) Then I nsdc rebuild service nsd3 restart However the subdmn1.mymaindomain.com fails to resolve to the IP. Any clues will be much appreciated.

• Valid path to deploy vm on host

  I've recently added a VM to the library in SCVMM to use with MS Test Pro 2010, and run into a problem. I cannot import it using test pro, it just won't give me any option to import in the lab manager. Also, if I try to deploy it back to the host it came from, it gives me a error saying the path is not valid. Anyone have any insight into this? Also, SCVMM seems to freeze everytime I try to create a new VM from the template of the VM I've stored in the library, the same one thats giving me the problem when I try to deploy it on to the host.   We're using ImageX to deploy Windows 7 Professional. We've gotten the Windows partition to work, but the recovery partition (100-200MB at the front of the drive in a standard install) isn't as simple. Here's a Technet guide I found: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744280%28WS.10%29.aspx That looks like it could work, but would take alot of time if we need to do that for every single machine we deploy.   Just a quick question, I couldn't find this out by looking around and have not had the time to run a test myself: Is it possible to create image hierarchies in MDT? Take this example where we have three images. - Image 1: Base OS - Image 2: Company Wide Applications (built off Image 1) - Image 3: Specific Role Applications (built off Image 2) Now just say we change the version of an application in Image 2. The next time we build Image 3, will this take the new version of the application since it's basing its image off Image 2? Also, If we add a program to Image 1, leave Image 2 unchanged and re-build Image 3, would this include the new program? I'm trying to plan out a way of creating images such that if a change is required for an image that is on basically every machine (think, Image 1) then we only have to change it in one location. Has anyone actually done something like this and has any tips?

• Group Policy - Published software not upgrading

  I'm testing this with mercurial MSIs, but it's the same for other packages. I've created a new group policy and added an old version of mercurial to User software installation as a Published package. On a Windows 7 client I install the package through Programs and Features. The installation works fine. Now, I would like to publish an updated version of mercurial. I create a new Published package. Under 'Upgrades' I configure it to replace (upgrade also doesn't work) the old version and mark this upgrade as 'Required'. The old package is not removed. The Windows 7 client is then restarted. When I log back in, I see a status message saying something like 'Removing managed software Mercurial ...'. There is no message about installation of the upgrade. If I look in Programs and Features, I can see the new version of mercurial listed. However, the actual mercurial directory under Program Files is missing. It's as though the installation recorded information about the MSI, but didn't actually install anything after removing the old version. As I mentioned, this isn't specific to mercurial. I've tried using other apps and have yet to find one that can be upgraded via a Published package. Using Assigned packages in Computer Configuration works without problems, but I would like this software to be optional rather than required. Ideas?

When during testing, something was not right and the content of the application needs to be changed. The distribution point keeps on serving the old content to the clients. I was wondering what the proper procedure is for updating the DP's when the content of an application changes. I have tried redistributing to the distribution points and deleting old revisions but to no avail.

  Flash fill breaks a lot of things in older excel documents. It causes maddeningly slow transfers from cell to cell after updating. I am trying to find a way to turn off "flash fill" in Excel 2013 automatically before rolling the product out to the rest of the staff in my company.   I have configured syslog server on my linux machine like this Linux Machine (syslog client) -- Linux Machine (syslog server) I have configured it and its working properly. Now, the problem is I want to look at the logs located on remote server in a particular directory for example /var/log/host-ip/httpd.log. One way is that I use ssh for that and then see those logs using commands like tail etc. So is there any Browser based graphical utility which I can use on my machine in which I just give the remote folder location, ip-address etc. and the software shows me the logs present on that remote server.   I am installing tomcat on a linux server, and would want it to be available as a service. I have found two different ways to achieve this. The first one is to copy the daemon.sh from $CATALINA_HOME/bin to /etc/init.d, and the other one I have seen is to create a simple init script that class $CATALINA_HOME/bin/startup.sh, etc. Startup.sh calls catalina.sh. The contents of the daemon.sh and startup.sh look very similar (at least for the env variables, and stuff like that). Daemon.sh calls jsvc in the end. Catalina.sh calls java. What is the (practical) difference between using the two of these when setting up tomcat as a service?

• How would I prevent users from logging in a PC while software is installing?

  So I currently am looking for a solution to keeping users logged out while software is installing or activating a pop-up message that cannot be moved, closed, and is always on top, because sometimes when we deploy software to users (via SCCM), the parameters of the install require the user to be logged out for the duration of the installation. I've looked at trying to customize the group policy for account lockout but with no luck. Anyone know of any programs or scripts that do this? Thank you!

  I don't seem to have all the man pages that I need. For example, my college computers (running Fedora 14) have man pages for ASCII, all the standard C libraries (stdlib.h, stdio.h) and so on and so forth. I wish to "install" these pages, after looking up on the Internet I couldn't really find anything that made sense. How can I get, say, the man-page of ASCII (I know it's not really a command or a daemon or anything like that, but typing man ASCII on the college computer gets me a page with the ASCII value table + a little more information). I don't want to keep using the Internet for looking up man pages every time I need to look up a function, function prototype or the ASCII table or something like that.
