• Webcam microphone input in Gnome/pulseaudio

  Just got a "Trust" webcam, which gets recognized on my Ubuntu Lucid. It has a built in microphone - which also gets recognized - however, I cannot really get it to act as the system microphone input? Here are some screenshots of what is shown by gnome-volume-control: The default window shows Trust webcam - which has two profiles: "Analog Mono Input" and "Off" - of course, I have it on "Analog Mono Input": However, on the "Input" tab - there is no matching "device for sound input" - neither a matching connector: Then I installed pavucontrol - but that doesn't show that much more; it tells first that gnome-volume-control reads from "Internal Audio Analog Stereo": Then in "Input devices" tab, there is again nothing resembling the mic input from webcam: Finally, under "Configuration" tab, the "Trust" webcam shows, but even if its profile is on "Analog Mono Input", nothing much happens:   So, does anyone know how I could get this webcam microphone to be recognized as the system input? • Need to set mailx variable to specify the From address

  Running Oracle Linux 5.8 (which is just re-branded RedHat EL 5.8) I must change the From address. But we have scripts that use mailx which cannot be re-written to use any extra flags, so I'd like to use internal variables instead, which I see on the linux.die.net manpage on mailx is an alternative to the -r flag: -r address Sets the From address. Overrides any from variable specified in environment or startup files. Tilde escapes are disabled. The -r address options are passed to the mail transfer agent unless SMTP is used. This option exists for compatibility only; it is recommended to set the from variable directly instead. (Source: http://linux.die.net/man/1/mailx) How can we use these mailx variables? I tried adding this to /root/.mailrc, no go: set [email protected] I also added that to /etc/mail.rc with no gold. So I am turning to you, SuperUsers...

• IIS 5 default website (Stopped) after new install on new box

  We just got new boxes at work. Running Xp, IIs 5.1 (yeah I know corporate decision, not mine) when I go look at inetmgr (iis) the default website it stopped. if restarted, I get an error that it didn't respond in a timely manor I ran netstat -an, and -o and saw nothing had port 80 open. cleared my event viewer, restarted iis and restarted iisadmin service (and theirby smtp) no errors in the event log. I ran aspnet_regiis -i jsut in case. Still no joy. I'm stumped. Can any think of anything else to try? Thanks, E-

• mailman not relaying email to external address

  I have a setup of mailman with postfix on an ubuntu server 12.04. My problem is that mailing list emails are not forwarded to email addresses external to my institution. However the initial welcome email is received by everyone, internally and externally. in fact, a simple email from command line with mail is successfully sent to anyone after that, mailing list emails are only forwarded to internal addresses. the domain name I'm using for the server is not that of my institution who is hosting the server. Here is my main.cf: myorigin = sub.myinstitution.tld mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/16 # this is my institution ip range relayhost = smtp.myinstitution.tld inet_interfaces = loopback-only local_transport = error:local delivery is disabled virtual_alias_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_mynetworks myhostname = mywebsite.tld mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost I also found these two links on serverfault and ubuntu forums, but neither of these solutions seem to do the trick for me.   Arch Linux doesn't have sendmail installed by default. So I get the following messages in my syslog: Sep 15 13:16:01 zorro crond[18497]: mailing cron output for user collectors sh cronjob.sh Sep 15 13:16:01 zorro crond[18497]: unable to exec /usr/sbin/sendmail: cron output for user collectors sh cronjob.sh to /dev/null What is the recommended way to fix this default behaviour so actual messages are sent? heirloom-mailx is installed and capable of sending email messages using SMTP. Is it possible for crond to use mailx to send notifications? Is there any drop-in replacement for sendmail that sends using mailx? Sendmail is not even in the repositories.

• Resilient Linux Mail Server Setup

  How would people design a resilient mail server setup with Linux? On an application level what the system needs to provide is both an incoming and outgoing mail service (i.e. SMTP & IMAP), along with filtering and archive storage (the archive part isn't critical yet, so we'll look at this later probably). What is required on top of this is a resilient system, i.e. one which will handle individual server failures without interrupting service. As such I would term this a High Availability mail system. This is in contrast to a High Performance mail setup, as in our case the volume of mail being handled isn't the important factor, it's simply that it stays online. Having not approached this problem before, the first thing I thought of was a clustered file system (gfs/gluster/etc), combined with heartbeat to failover a floating IP to another box in the case of a server failure. Combined with postfix & dovecot does this sound feasible to people?

• Is it possible to spoof the From: field in Outlook?

  I am wondering if it is possible to change the From: field (not just the reply-to) in Outlook (specifically in the 2010 beta, but also interested in other versions). I am just moving over from Linux and am used to being able to do this quite simply in some clients. At first I thought it was the option of "Other E-Mail address" on the From drop down menu in a compose window, but that seems to do... nothing! I want to be able to do this so I can have email look like it comes from a domain I own but do not wish to run an SMTP server on.

• Two mail servers, need help with dns configuration for the backup one

  I need to run a redundant backup mail server in case the main one goes down. The settings in GoDaddy look something like the following: A (Host) Host Points to @ ip address of mail1 41.x.x.x mail1 ip address of mail1 41.x.x.x mail2 ip address of mail2 196.x.x.x MX Priority host points to 10 @ mail1.mydomain.com 20 @ mail2.mydomain.com When mail1 goes down, mail2 is able to get emails. I can access it through the browser with no problem, but I want my users to able to pop3/smtp as well without changing anything in their outlook. I dont want any impact to the users when mail1 is down. Also, I'm using the windows server DFS to keep both folders of the mails in sync. Is this the right way, or should I be using something else?

• Why my dns server ip got blacklisted instead of my email server ip?

  We are hosting our own dns server our scenario is as under; dns ip: a.b.c.1 fqdn:ns1.example.com ------ reverse lookup to a.b.c.1 mail server ip a.b.c.2 mail.example.com ------ reverse lookup to a.b.c.2 smtp.example.com ------ no reverse lookup pop.example.com ------ no reverse lookup web server ip a.b.c.3 example.com ------ reverse lookup to a.b.c.3 www.example.com ------ no reverse lookup a few days back our dns server ip got blacklisted and all our services were down from outside. We had also added a new dns server on a separate network that caused our domain and machines with same names as above to resolve on different ips, can this b a cause of being blacklisted? But all blacklists points towards spamming. Can anyone please explain why my dns ip got blacklisted instead of my email or web server ip?

• How to integrate Thunderbird with SpamAssassin running on the server?

  I'm trying to integrate SpamAssassin running on a server with Thunderbird. Basically I need to be able to select several emails in Thunderbird and send them back to SpamAssassin for training, either as spam or ham. I tried several approaches: Tried "Report Spam" plugin, which is able to send message back to server either as an email attachment or via HTTP post. However, the plugin is rather buggy... Does not support sending several messages at once, "report as ham" is not working at all, etc. Wanted to make a custom button that will copy selected messages to a separate IMAP folder (I could create "LearnAsSpam" and "LearnAsHam" folders in IMAP that will get processed automatically on server), but don't even know how to approach this in Thunderbird, don't want to learn Thunderbird extention authoring... Server-side, I'm prepared to do some custom programming or integration needed (can receive a message via HTTP / SMTP / whatever), my stumbling block is Thunderbird... So, how can I send emails from Thunderbird back to SpamAssassin running on email server for Bayesian training, with as few keystrokes as possible?

• How to split audio into multiple channels from optical S/PDIF or 1/8"?

  I have a motherboard which has an optical S/PDIF output or 1/8". I'd like to "split" that signal into the appropriate channels so that I can then connect that to the wires behind my car's headunit which, in turn, run to the amp. The factory Bose amp just takes a single connector with a million wires running out of it, so that's why I would need to separate the signal into separate channels. On the other end there are four RCA connectors: front left, front right, rear left, rear right. The sub-woofer signal does not require an additional connection.   I use postfix to send direct email. But, I use a relay to send email for specific senders. So I use "sender_dependent_relayhost_maps" : /etc/postfix/main.cf : relayhost = transport_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/transport smtp_sender_dependent_authentication = yes sender_dependent_relayhost_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sender_relay /etc/postfix/sender_relay : [email protected] smtp.relay.com So when I send an email with sender email "[email protected]", postfix will use the relay. But... I don't want to use the relay host for some recipient. ;) I think I must use "transport_map" to catch the email before it pass through "sender_dependent_relayhost_maps" but I don't know how to do it... • Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000, more problematic keys?

  So my new motherboard doesn't have a ps/2 connector, so I bought a Microsoft natural keyboard 4000 to replace my old natural keyboard. But, some of the keys stopped working, so I bought another 4000... which then had different keys stop working. I tried cleaning them out, but no go. My guess is some condensation or something fell on it and shorted it out... but if it is that easy to short out, I can't imagine how my old keyboard lasted for years. Did I just get unlucky or are newer keyboards more vulnerable? Any recommendations?

• ProFTPd not in boot: Debian

  I just configured my new VPS with Apache, PHP, MySQL and ProFTPd. I wanted to install a smtp server, but I was advised to do a apt-get upgrade first. I did this, and I got up a blue screen where I could choose between two alternatives. It said something about GRUB 2 installer. I chose the alternative that was already selected, the topmost. I chose not to update the GRUB2, and use the old one that was installed. Now, ProFTPd doesn't start in boot anymore. I have to /etc/init.d/proftpd start every time. How do I fix this? Should I have chosen to update GRUB2? Should I do apt-get upgrade again and try to do the same GRUB2 installer again?

• DVI to VGA adapter only working in one output

  I have a AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series graphics card which has 2 DVI outputs. I tried to set it up with 2 monitors which both have vga connectors on the end and used 2 dvi to vga adapters like these. http://www.tvcables.co.uk/images/items/vga-to-dvi.jpg For some reason nothing would reach the monitor, it would remain in standby, if it was plugged into the second output. I tried all the different combinations of cables, adapters and the 2 monitors but whichever monitor that was plugged into the second output wouldn't work. I then randomly decided to plug a different monitor into the second output which has a dvi connector on the end so there was no need for an adapter and plugged it in and it worked! Does anyone know why the second output on the graphics card won't work with a dvi to vga adapter (and the first output will)? I'm really confused! Thanks

  So I've managed to setup bind9 and a mail server, but it seems there is something wrong. I don't quite under stand this error: The configuration of your mail servers and your DNS are not ok! The report of the test is: mail.domain.com. - mail.domain.com - 208.xxx.xxx.xxx - lisa.domain.com Spam recognition software and RFC821 4.3 (also RFC2821 4.3.1) state that the hostname given in the SMTP greeting MUST have an A record pointing back to the same server. Can anyone explain this to me in a bit more detail, and maybe point me in a direction to solve this?

• Set ReturnPath globally in Postfix

  I have Magento using Sendmail and Wordpress using PHPmailer to send webapp-generated mail. Occasionally, someone will enter their email address incorrectly and the mail (let's say, a purchase receipt) will bounce back to the return-path specified by the script. I dont want to set the return path for each vhost, especially because it is not easily done. Ideally, WP would use the address of the blog admin and Magento would use one of the numerous email fields specified, but they default to using username@machinename (in my case, username is the system user and machinename is a FQDN, but it is not the same as the actual vhost FQDN). The result is that bounced mail returns to the server and, since the server is used only for outbound SMTP, the messages sit there, undelivered and worse, unread. I'm Postfix 2.6.6 on CentOS 6.3, is it possible to globally force a specific returnpath for all messages sent via PHP on the server?

• How do I record sound from my CD/DVD player without other system sounds in the mix?

  Using GoldWave I can record via the "Stereo Mix" channel, but I get no sound on the "CD" channel. Of course, using the stereo mix also mixes in all system sounds, including beeps, etc. I have the analog out on the DVD player connected to the CD-IN connector on the MoBo. I can hear CDs and DVDs playing just fine through my speakers - is this because the CD is also IDE data connection in to deliver the sound to the sound card, then? I specifically want to record a DVD; I can easily rip a CD using GoldWave's built-in ripper. Is there anything I have forgotten or have to enable? Or is it likely I have a damaged cable? My system is an MSI mobo and is running Windows XP SP3.

• Laptop power supplies, does current matter?

  I have two laptops (same manufacture), with the same type of power connector. However, the power supplies/transformers are slightly different. The output on the first laptop's power supply is 15.6 V at 8.0 A. The output on the second laptop's power supply is 15.6 V at 5A. Clearly the voltages are the same, but the currents are different. I assume the second laptop's power supply can not be used on the first, because it can't supply enough power to the laptop. However, can the first laptop's power supply be safely used on the second laptop?

  I've a server that uses Qmail. It is installed by default and it is supposed to work. I've created a new domain and new user (vadddomain + vadduser) without problems, but when I send an email from Gmail to [email protected] (the address I've created) it desappears, it is. But if connect to SMTP server directly (telnet domain.com 25) and post an email it arrives to the user queue. What's happening?!? Note: If I try to access to my user through telnet domain.com 110 it seems my pwd is not correct and it's the same I used when created the user with vadduser

• Cloud service to receive up to 30000 emails a minute

  I am building a business where I want the infrastructure to be able to handle up to 30000 emails per minute during peak periods. The question is what kinds of services offer this? I expect to download the emails using SMTP or similar. I expect each email to have a total attachment size of 2 mb, and might have several attachments. I have considered utilizing Parse API from SendGrid, but I am worried because they offer this service for free. I have contacted them and I am waiting for answer. Are there any better and more suitable alternatives?

• Exim: Change sender address when sending mails out of local network

  We have a working exim setup at a site, where users can send and receive mails. We are trying to setup a server to send some warnings and errors using email to an address that is outside the local network. The problem is: The program that sends the mails sends them using the username it runs under and the local hostname of the server. This cause the mails to have a sender of format: [email protected]. Exim sends these mails to the ISP's SMTP server, which rejects the mails as they have an illegal or unverifiable sender (the internal address). I'm thinking I should configure exim to rewrite the sender when: - sender's domain is on the local network - receiver's domain is outside the local network I tried setting some kind of rewriting in the exim config, but did not manage to get it to work. I'd show what I have tried, but I ran out of time on the last visit to the site, and had to revert to the original version losing all the changes I tried.

  I'm going to get a Windows 2008 dedicated server sometime soon. I'm going to have my website hosted on it, so, I also want to run a mail server on the same machine to receive any mail sent to the website (I use the SMTP Server in IIS for sending mail, but this about receiving not sending) Does Windows 2008 have a built-in POP3 OR IMAP server? If so, can it be accessed through a webmail interface? I mean does it also have a webmail interface similar to OWA for example? If not, do you have suggestions for a good mail server with a webmail interface, preferably free or open source? MS Exchange is above my budget and my needs are so simple anyway. I heard good things about hMailServer but I checked and it doesn't have a webmail interface. I know I can outsource this to a third party for a little monthly fee, but I prefer to host my own server. I have already added MyDomain.com and an email account I have create a MX Record with the mail server being mail.domain.com an a priority on 20. 1) But the question is how do I now link this MX record for the domain to my mail server/ mail server IP Address? 2) What changes are needed in hMailServer to complete the process and be able to send emails for the domain? 3) In Settings SMTP Delivery of email: What should my configuration here look like?
