    Hi I'm configuring SQL server 2005 reporting server to send emails outside the domain. I have followed the steps outlined at MS but have a question: How can I supply a domain user to connect to the Exchange server in the same domain? I've tried <SMTPAccountName>DOMAIN\User</SMTPAccountName> in the rsreportserver.config.

  • Database Snapshots of Mirrored databases affect performance of Principal database?

    I have 2 servers set in Mirroring High-safety. One is Principal and another in Mirror. Currently I have 2 snapshots of a Production database (100 GB size) created on Principal server (for no_lock purpose of massive select processes) and 2 snapshots on the mirror server for the same database for reporting purposes. I know snapshots reduce performance of source databases but I am not sure if snapshots from mirror server have any impact on principal server's performance. thanks,

  • Stop Outlook from acting on IMAP Alerts

    I have an IMAP server which sets an "account approaching quota" alert when an account is above 85%. For the majority of our users who are using Thunderbird, this works great as they receive the notice once to twice a day as a gentle reminder. Our few die-hard outlook users on the other hand get an annoying popup as often as their account gets polled. Does anyone know of a way to tell outlook to reuse IMAP connections to avoid this problem (or alternatively to disable Outlook reporting of alerts altogether)?

  • What might cause the Save and Open dialog windows to just not work?

    In several applications, the Save and Load dialog windows are just not showing. And in notepad (which obviously handles the return code) is reporting an out of memory issue, which I'm sure is not the case; I think it's assuming it's out of memory as it can't get the window handle. In any case, there's something definitely wrong with Windows, but there's nothing in the event log. Any idea why this might happen?

I imagine it in the form of two piece software. the first part, some kind of dashboard with list of active IPs, is on the server and awaits for information from remote hosts, the second part will be on clients and it will be reporting that client is working. Do you know something like this, I'm searching for free application that is lightweight and does not require installation.

  • How can I detect hard drive failures?

    I am in charge of a large number of Windows servers. Recently, many have been reporting hard drive errors with event codes 11 and 55. CHKDSK indicates that the drives are fine most of the time. What other diagnostic tools could I use to more accurately detect hard drive failures? Could these Windows events be false positives? I have already evaluated S.M.A.R.T., and it seems to have significant sensitivity and specificity issues.

  • Mirror for Oracle DB 10g or 11g download

    I was trying to download Oracle Database (10g and 11g). On webpage of oracle there are links, however they give me 404 when I accept OTN license and try to download. I googled around and found forum with users reporting the same issue and the workaround was to change the url of download link from download.oracle.com/... to download download-uk.oracle.com/... however this does not work either, is there any mirror that is working at the moment?

    I'm installing OPSMGR I have 2 x servers running WS2012R2 with Windows updates applied SQL 2012 SP1 I've made sure the SQL collation is correct I'm installing all roles apart from Reporting on the SCOM server. All of the Prerequisites have passed. I can see the database is created in SQL but it doesn't go past "Operational Database Configuration" It hangs on "Importing System Library Management Pack" Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Has anyone ever used/created a simple unix/linux log parser that can parse logs like the following: timestamp log_message \n Order the messages, parse the timestamp, and return: All messages Messages after a certain date (--since) Messages before a certain date (--until) Combination of --since, --until I could write something like this, but wasn't sure if there was something canned. It would fit well in some automated reporting I'm planning on doing.

    My 9 month old 256GB Samsung SSD is now reporting the following SMART failures: Rsvd_Blk_Cnt_Chip FAILING NOW 184 Available_Reservd_Space FAILING NOW 20 Can anyone explain the meaning of these two attributes that appear to be failing (Rsvd_Blk_Cnt_Chip and Available_Reservd_Space? Also, also aren't SSDs much more immune to these types of failures? Everything seems to be working fine now, but I'm fearful of a looming failure.

  • Best way to set up servers for .NET performance

    Assume we have 3 physical servers and let's say we are only interested in performance, and not reliability. Is it better to give each server a specific function or make them all duplicates and split the traffic between them? In other words dedicate 1 as DB server, 1 as web server, and 1 as reporting server/data warehouse, or better to put all three services on each server and use them as web farm?

  • Quick method to determine SSD drive health?

    I have an Intel X-25M drive that was marked "failed" twice in a ZFS storage array, as noted here. However, after removing the drive, it seems to to mount, read and write in other computers (Mac, PC, USB enclosure, etc.) Is there a good way to determine the drive's present health? I feel that the previous failure in the ZFS solution was the convergence of bugs, bad error reporting and hardware. It seems like this drive may have some life in it, though.

  • No network connection and error

    My PC keeps reporting the following error in the event viewer around every 10-15 minutes: Faulting application , version 0.0.0.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000. Whenever it happens, the XP theme change to classic theme then change back to the normal theme. The network goes down and I must restart PC for the network to come back online. What could be causing this and how do i fix it?

Getting Lazy with System.Lazy: System.Lazy and System.Lazy<T> are new features in .NET 4 that provide a way to create objects that may need to perform time consuming operations and defer the execution of the operation until it is needed.  Derik Whittaker has a nice write-up that describes how to use it. LINQ to Twitter: Nifty open source library on Codeplex that enables you to use LINQ syntax to query Twitter. Visual Studio 2010 Using Intellitrace in VS 2010: Chris Koenig has a nice 10 minute video that demonstrates how to use the new Intellitrace features of VS 2010 to enable DVR playback of your debug sessions. Make the VS 2010 IDE Colors look like VS 2008: Scott Hanselman has a nice blog post that covers the Visual Studio Color Theme Editor extension – which allows you to customize the VS 2010 IDE however you want. How to understand your code using Dependency Graphs, Sequence Diagrams, and the Architecture Explorer: Jennifer Marsman has a nice blog post describes how to take advantage of some of the new architecture features within VS 2010 to quickly analyze applications and legacy code-bases. How to maintain control of your code using Layer Diagrams: Another great blog post by Jennifer Marsman that demonstrates how to setup a “layer diagram” within VS 2010 to enforce clean layering within your applications.  This enables you to enforce a compiler error if someone inadvertently violates a layer design rule. Collapse Selection in Solution Explorer Extension: Useful VS 2010 extension that enables you to quickly collapse “child nodes” within the Visual Studio Solution Explorer.  If you have deeply nested project structures this extension is useful. Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 Building a Simple Windows Phone 7 Application: A nice tutorial blog post that demonstrates how to take advantage of Expression Blend to create an animated Windows Phone 7 application.   • Understanding and Controlling Parallel Query Processing in SQL Server

    Data warehousing and general reporting applications tend to be CPU intensive because they need to read and process a large number of rows. To facilitate quick data processing for queries that touch a large amount of data, Microsoft SQL Server exploits the power of multiple logical processors to provide parallel query processing operations such as parallel scans. Through extensive testing, we have learned that, for most large queries that are executed in a parallel fashion, SQL Server can deliver linear or nearly linear response time speedup as the number of logical processors increases. However, some queries in high parallelism scenarios perform suboptimally. There are also some parallelism issues that can occur in a multi-user parallel query workload. This white paper describes parallel performance problems you might encounter when you run such queries and workloads, and it explains why these issues occur. In addition, it presents how data warehouse developers can detect these issues, and how they can work around them or mitigate them.
