• Has this server been compromised?

  A friend is running a VPS (CentOS) His business partner was the sysadmin but has left him high and dry to look after the system. So, I've been asked to help out in fixing an apparent spam problem. His IP address got blacklisted for unsolicited mail. I'm not sure where to look for a problem, but I started with netstat to see what open connections were running. It looks to me like he has remote hosts connected to his SMTP server. EDIT: Here's some output from /var/log/maillog which looks like it may be the result of spam. If it appears to be the case to others, where should I look next to investigate a root cause? I put the server IP through www.checkor.com and it came back clean.   I'll try to keep this simple: I'm 29, been dabbling with computers for the past 10 years, had entry level jobs in tech support for different apps, been fixing computers for a while and now want to specialize in something. I'm not 100% stranger to programming but haven't gone past if/then/else with anything. A bit of JavaScript, PHP, Python and currently checking out the "SELECT" statement in SQL :)) I'm curious about programming, I enjoy it and I'm thinking of making a living out of it. So, while I'm at it, why not earn a bit more than the average Joe? So, that's why I'm checking what the best solution, the best learning path and the most useful languages are considering: a) how easy/fast can you find a job by knowing it b) how much would I be able to earn c) how fast can I learn it By reading 10-20 articles online I've come up with an example, but I'm here for some expert advice. Example: * ratings from a) and b) point of view #1 sql ; #2 java ; #3 html (please don't start the markup language debate) ; #4 javascript From this ratings, I'd say a good way to go is learn html/css/(javascript or php) for the web part of apps, some SQL/MySQL/whateverSQL for holding data and loads of Java for the program itself. Please let me know if this is a good idea and if so, what should be the order for learning all of the above. Else, please let me know a better way and why it would be better. Many thanks for taking the time to read my question. Best wishes to you guys Edit: if I think Java + SQL + HTML&JavaScript is the way to go, does the order I'm learning them in matter? Or can I try to learn them all at once?

• Invalid Html Response and JS Errors when you open your Application in Visual Studio 2013

   I was working on an application which uses Telerik controls. The application was working fine for a while. Suddenly, the application stopped working. I mean lot of my application pages becoming very very ugly. I found JavaScript errors on every Browser's console. When I check the page view-source, the generated HTML was messy and invalid. This was only happening with my local machine. If someone else on my network accesses my application pages, he will get the correct HTML and no JavaScript errors. My mind was blowing because the same page was generating invalid HTML(and JavaScript errors) when I access the page using a local browser but generate correct HTML(and no JavaScript errors) when someone else access my application page remotely. Then I realized that I the only change I made last was opening my application in Visual Studio 2013 RTM which I installed few days ago. I closed the Visual Studio 2013, everything work like a charm. Then I became100% sure that this is only happening due to new Visual Studio 2013 feature called Browser Link. I just open the application again and add this in web.config. • Compressing/compacting messages over websocket on Node.js

  We have a websocket implementation (Node.js/Sock.js) that exchanges data as JSON strings. As our use cases grow, so have the size of the data transmitted across the wire. The websocket protocol does not natively offer any compression feature, so in order to reduce the size of our messages we'd have to manually do something about the serialisation. There appear to be a variety of LZW implementations in Javascript, some which confuses me on their compatibility for in-browser use only versus transmission across the wire due to my lack of understanding on low-level encodings. More importantly, all of them seem to take a noticeable performance drag when Javascript is the engine doing the compression/decompression work, which is not desirable for mobile devices. Looking instead other forms of compact serialisation, MessagePack does not appear to have any active support in Javascript itself; BSON does not have any Javascript implementation; and an alternative BISON project that I tested does not deserialise everything back to their original values (large numbers), and it does not look like any further development will happen either. What are some other options others have explored for Node.js?

• ASP.NET MVC 3 (C#) Software Architecture

  I am starting on a relatively large and ambitious ASP.NET MVC 3 project and just thinking about the best way to organize my code. The project is basically going to be a general management system that will be capable of supporting any type management system whether it be a blogging system, cms, reservation system, wikis, forums, project management system, etc…, each of them being just a separate 'module'. For those who don't want to read the long blog post the basic idea is that the core system itself is nothing more than a users system with an admin interface to manage the users system. Then you just add on module as you need them and the module I will be creating is a simple blog post to test it out before I move on to the big module which is a project management system. Now I am just trying to think of the best way to structure this so that it is easy for users to add in there own modules but easy for me to update to core system without worrying about the user modifying the core code. I think the ideal way would be to have a number of core projects that user is specifically told not to modify otherwise the system may become unstable and future updates would not work. When the user wants to add in there own modules, they would just add in a new project (or multiple projects). The thing is I am not sure that it is even possible to use multiple projects all with their own controllers, razor view template, css, javascript, etc... in one web application. Ideally each module would have some of it own razor view templates, css, javascript, image files and also need access to some of the core razor view templates, css, javascript, image files which would is in a separate project. It is possible to have 1 web application run off of controllers, razor view templates, css, javascript, image files that are store in multiple projects? Is there a better was to structure this to allow the user to easily add in module with having to modify the core code?

• Noscript button missing in Firefox

  Windows XP professional SP3 Firefox 13.0.1 NoScript Addon 2.4.6 I can't click Javascript links, like for opening a popup window (which I usually don't care about, but this time it was Important :-( ). I mention NoScript as I used to have a button where I could temporarily enable Javascript so the link would work, but with one of the latest updates this seems to be gone. I have "Block popup windows" unchecked and "Enable Javascript" checked in Options. How can I get the NoScript button back?

• URL is generating a /#!/splash-page

  My site for some reason is generating a shebang - /#!/splash-page on the URL. For example when I type www.modernvintage1005.com, the browser returns www.modernvintage1005.com/#!/splash-page and every subsequent page is /#!/about, /#!/contact, and so forth. There's absolutely nothing on the Google about this. There is a lot of rewrite help to eliminate .index.php from the home page, but that's it. How do I rewrite it to just say domain.com and domain.com/about.html, etc.?   To protect the privacy when I surf over the internet, I use AdBlockPlus add-in for Firefox. But when I use Internet Explorer 9, this add-in don’t work. Internet Explorer 9 (and I hope Internet Explorer 10) has built in feature to add a TPL. There is a javascript function to call named msAddTrackingProtectionList. This function has two parameter: the first one is the link of TPL and the second one is the Title of TPL. To do this is very easy. • Is there a bug with Apache 2.2 and content filters (and maybe mod_proxy)?

  I'm running Apache 2.2.15-29 on RHEL 6 (actually Scientific Linux 6.4) and I'm trying to set up a reverse proxy with content rewriting so all of the links on the proxied web pages are rewritten to reference the proxy host. I'm running into a problem with some of the content rewriting and I'd like to know if this is a bug or if I'm doing something wrong (and how to do it right, if applicable). I'm proxying a subdirectory on an internal host (internal.example.com/foo) onto the root of an external host (external.example.com). I need to rewrite HTML, CSS, and Javascript content to fix all of the URLs. I'm also hosting some content locally on the external host, which I don't think is a problem but I'm mentioning here for completeness. • How do web servers enforce the same-origin policy?

  I'm diving deeper into developing RESTful APIs and have so far worked with a few different frameworks to achieve this. Of course I've run into the same-origin policy, and now I'm wondering how web servers (rather than web browsers) enforce it. From what I understand, some enforcing seems to happen on the browser's end (e.g., honoring a Access-Control-Allow-Origin header received from a server). But what about the server? For example, let's say a web server is hosting a Javascript web app that accesses an API, also hosted on that server. I assume that server would enforce the same-origin policy --- so that only the javascript that is hosted on that server would be allowed to access the API. This would prevent someone else from writing a javascript client for that API and hosting it on another site, right? So how would a web server be able to stop a malicious client that would try to make AJAX requests to its api endpoints while claiming to be running javascript that originated from that same web server? What's the way most popular servers (Apache, nginx) protect against this kind of attack? Or is my understanding of this somehow off the mark? Or is the cross-origin policy only enforced on the client end?

• Simple jquery ajax call leaks memory in ie.

  I created a web page that makes an ajax call every second. In Internet Explorer 7, it leaks memory badly (20MB in about 15 minutes). The program is very simple. It just runs a javascript function that makes an ajax call. The server returns an empty string, and the javascript does nothing with it. I use setTimout to run the function every second, and I'm using Drip to watch the thing. I'm not doing anything with the DOM, and if I comment out the ajax call, the memory leak stops. So it looks like the leak is entirely in the ajax call. Does jquery ajax inherently create some sort of circular reference, and if so, how can I free it? By the way, it doesn't leak in Firefox. Someone suggested running the test in another VM and see if the results are the same. Rather than setting up another VM, I found a laptop that was running XP Home with IE8. It exhibits the same problem. I tried some older versions of jquery and got better results, but the problem didn't go away entirely until I abandoned ajax in jquery and went with more traditional (and ugly) ajax.

By dynamic, I mean where the user has to submit a form. As an example, I have a page with an email form. • iPhone and Core Data: how to retain user-entered data between updates?

  Consider an iPhone application that is a catalogue of animals. The application should allow the user to add custom information for each animal -- let's say a rating (on a scale of 1 to 5), as well as some notes they can enter in about the animal. However, the user won't be able to modify the animal data itself. Assume that when the application gets updated, it should be easy for the (static) catalogue part to change, but we'd like the (dynamic) custom user information part to be retained between updates, so the user doesn't lose any of their custom information. We'd probably want to use Core Data to build this app. Let's also say that we have a previous process already in place to read in animal data to pre-populate the backing (SQLite) store that Core Data uses. We can embed this database file into the application bundle itself, since it doesn't get modified. When a user downloads an update to the application, the new version will include the latest (static) animal catalogue database, so we don't ever have to worry about it being out of date. But, now the tricky part: how do we store the (dynamic) user custom data in a sound manner? My first thought is that the (dynamic) database should be stored in the Documents directory for the app, so application updates don't clobber the existing data. Am I correct? My second thought is that since the (dynamic) user custom data database is not in the same store as the (static) animal catalogue, we can't naively make a relationship between the Rating and the Notes entities (in one database) and the Animal entity (in the other database). In this case, I would imagine one solution would be to have an "animalName" string property in the Rating/Notes entity, and match it up at runtime. Is this the best way to do it, or is there a way to "sync" two different databases in Core Data?
