• Stream Music To Ventrilo From ESXi VM

  I would like to stream music to my Ventrilo server from a Windows XP virtual machine running on an ESXi host. I have followed the instructions outlined here to stream music from something like VLC to the Ventrilo server on another machine and it works fine. I have also added the lines: sound.present = "TRUE" sound.virtualDev = "es1371" sound.fileName = "-1" sound.autodetect = "TRUE" to my .vmx file, as suggested here (http://communities.vmware.com/thread/191878), to get a sound card in my VM. The problem I am having is that it seems that my VM is not outputting any sound, so there's nothing to stream through Ventrilo. The Device Manager on the VM shows that this new sound card has drivers and doesn't appear to have any concerns with it. Can someone point me in the right direction to get my desired outcome? Thanks! On a few occasions I've accidentally opened a blank vim file with some complex bash command I was writing. Awesome. How do I get the newly written line in vim back into bash? I found another post where the author had the opposite trouble--or so it seems. What steps put my bash prompt commands into vim and then back again to bash to execute?

  Over the past couple of months I've been working on a couple of projects that have used the free Google Maps API to add interactive maps and geocoding capabilities to ASP.NET websites. In a nutshell, the Google Maps API allow you to display maps on your website, to add markers onto the map, and to compute the latitude and longitude of an address, among many other tasks. With some Google Maps API experience under my belt, I decided it would be fun to implement a store locator feature and share it here on 4Guys. A store locator lets a visitor enter an address or postal code and then shows the nearby stores. Typically, store locators display the nearby stores on both a map and in a grid, along with the distance between the entered address and each store within the area. • Virtualised Sharepoint Backup Strategies

  I have a Sharepoint (OSS 2007) farm running on three virtual machines in VMWare ESX, plus a SQL Server backend on physical hardware. During a recent Business Continuity Planning event I tried restoring the sharepoint farm with only the config and content databases, and failed to get things working. My plan was to build a new sharepoint server, then attach this to a restoration config database and install the Central Management site on this server, then reattach the content databases. This failed at the Central Management part of the plan. So I am back to the drawing board on the best strategy for backup and recovery, with reducing the time and complexity of the restore job the main objective. I haven't been able to find much in the way of discussion of backup/restore strategies for Sharepoint in a VMWare environment, so I figured I'd see if anyone on server fault has any ideas or experience.

  Soon, the U.S. Supreme Court may decide whether to hear a case that could have a lasting impact on computer and video games. The case before the Court involves a law passed by the state of California attempting to criminalize the sale of certain computer and video games. Two previous courts rejected the California law as unconstitutional, but soon the Supreme Court could have the final say. Whatever the Court's ruling, we must be prepared to continue defending our rights now and in the future. To do so, we need a large, powerful movement of gamers to speak with one voice and show that we won't sit back while lawmakers try to score political points by scapegoating video games and treating them differently than books, movies, and music. If the Court decides to hear the case, we're going to need thousands of activists like you who can help defend computer and video games by writing letters to editors, calling into talk radio stations, and educating Americans about our passion for and appreciation of computer and video games. • Error when reinstalling apache2

  I did an dist-upgrade on Debian Wheezy yesterday and got an error with syslog-nc-core. I found that i should try to reinstall it and tried but it ended with an error that apache2 isnt configured. I purged it also and when i now try to reinstall i get the error Setting up apache2 (2.4.10-1) ... Directory /etc/apache2/conf.d is not empty - leaving as is Please note, that directory is considered obsolete and not read anymore by default zz010_psa_httpd.conf ERROR: Config file dir.conf not properly enabled: /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/dir.conf is a real file, not touching it dpkg: error processing package apache2 (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: apache2 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

• IIS: changing site's home directory while site is running

  I'm trying to understand exactly what IIS 6.0 (on Windows Server 2003) does when I change the "Local Path" of a web site's Home Directory while the site is running. (Specifically with regard to ASP.NET applications.) I'm trying to build support for or against this practice in a deployment scenario: e.g. deploy the new code alongside the old code, then simply switch the IIS web site's local path to the folder containing the new code. IIS seems to handle this gracefully, but I notice that w3wp.exe still keeps some handles on the old code folder after the change. That's strange to me, because I would have expected IIS to recycle the application pool if this happened. Is this safe? Is the behavior well-defined?

  Based on Jeff Atwood's post on Coding Horror, I ordered one of these monitors, and I've been absolutely loving it. However, I recently (i.e. today) took the next step in monitor-y goodness and fastened the sucker to an articulated wall mount. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to remove the stand. The flat portion comes off with a single screw, but the leg it fastens to has no apparent method of removing it. Has anyone figured out a trick for removing these, so they don't just stick out below the screen? Should I remove the screws from the backside of the screen, and look for an internal connection to remove? Or just give up and live with it? (After all, it's a great display, it's floating in the air in front of me, and the stand leg is only a minor annoyance).

• Hallmarks of a Professional PHP Programmer

  I'm a 19 year old student who really REALLY enjoys programming, and I'm hoping to glean from your years of experience here. At present, I'm studying PHP every chance I get, and have been for about 3 years, although I've never taken any formal classes. I'd love to some day be a programmer full time, and make a good career of it. My question to you is this: What do you consider to be the hallmarks or traits of a professional programmer? Mainly in the field of PHP, but other, more generalized qualifications are also more than welcome, as I think PHP is more of a hobbyist language and may not be the language of choice in the eyes of potential employers. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Above all, I don't want to wast time on something that isn't worth while. I'm currently feeling pretty confident in my knowledge of PHP as a language, and I know that I could build just about anything I need and have it "work", but I feel sorely lacking in design concepts and code structure. I can even write object oriented code, but in my personal opinion, that isn't worth a hill of beans if it isn't organized well. For this reason, I bought Matt Zandstra's book "PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practice" and have been reading that a little every day. Anyway, I'm starting to digress a little here, so back to the original question. What advice would you give to an aspiring programmer who wants to make an impact in this field? Also, on a side note, I've been working on a project with a friend of mine that would give a fairly good idea of where I'm at coding wise. • Form Validation Options

  The steps involved in transmitting form data from the client to the Web server User loads web form. User enters data in to web form fields User clicks submit On submit page validates fields using JavaScript. If validation errors are found then the validation script stops the browser from canceling posting the data to the web server and displays error messages as needed. If the form passes the data validation process then the browser will URL encode the values of every field and post it to the server.  The server reads the posted data from the query string and then again validates the data just to ensure data consistency and to prevent any non-validated data because JavaScript was turned off on the clients browser from being inserted in to a database or passed on to other process. If the data passes the second validation check then the server side code will continue with the requested processes. In my opinion, it is mandatory to validate data using client side and server side validation as a fail over process. The client side validation allows users to correct any error before they are sent to the web server for processing, and this allows for an immediate response back to the user regarding data that is not correct or in the proper format that is desired. In addition, this prevents unnecessary interaction between the user and the web server and will free up the server over time compared to doing only server side validation. Server validation is the last line of defense when it comes to validation because you can check to ensure the user’s data is correct before it is used in a business process or stored to a database. Honestly, I cannot foresee a scenario where I would only want to use one form of validation over another especially with the current cost of creating and maintaining data. In my opinion, the redundant validation is well worth the overhead.

Might be a little too hard to get into the top page of Google. • Configure IIS 7 Reverse Proxy to connect to TeamCity Tomcat

  We have an IIS 7 webserver configured and would like to create a reverse proxy for a TeamCity installation using Tomcat on the same machine. The IIS server site is https://somesite and I would like the TeamCity to appear as https://somesite/teamcity redirecting to http://localhost:portnumber I have installed the IIS URL Rewrite extension from http://www.iis.net/download/URLRewrite and the Application Request Routing from http://www.iis.net/download/ApplicationRequestRouting to try and setup a reverse proxy but can't get it working. The closest answer I found is an old StackOverflow question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/331755/how-do-i-setup-teamcity-for-public-access-over-https which unfortunately doesn't have a working example. I've searched a quite a bit but can't seem to find a relevant example. Any help appreciated (apologies for the bold but the spam prevention won't let me post more than 1 hyperlink)

  My laptop has an OEM version of Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I need to reinstall Windows, and I've made sure that disk I have downloaded is the same as the one on my system (32-bit Home Premium). Is the retail version the same as the OEM? I only have a retail copy but I have an OEM license. Will I have any problems reactivating my copy of windows? Note, my HW hasn't changed. I am trying to set up R and with it the necessary java dependencies to install e.g. JGR, rjava, etc. I read through quite a few instructions to do that but somehow I must have done sth wrong. • Remote host: can tracert, can telnet, can*not* browse: what gives?

  One of my customers of the company I work for has made a change to their Internet connection, and now we can't connect to them any more from our LAN. To help me troubleshoot this issue, the network guy on the customer's site has configured their firewall so that a HTTPS connection to their public IP address is open to any IP. I should put https://<customer's IP> in my browser and get a web page. Well, it works from any network I've tried (even from my smartphone), just not from my company's LAN. I thought it may be an issue with our firewall (though I checked its rules and it allows outbound TCP port 443 to anywhere), so I just connected a PC directly to the network connection of our provider, bypassing out firewall completely, and still it didn't work (everything else worked). So I asked for help to our Internet provider's customer service, and they asked me to do a tracert to our customer's IP. The tracert is successful, as the final hop shown in the output is the host I want to reach. So they said there's no problem. :( I also tried telnet <customer's IP> 443 and that works as well: I get a blank page with the cursor blinking (I've tried using another random port and that gives me an error message, as it should). Still, from any browser of any PC in my LAN I can't open that URL. I tried checking the network traffic with Wireshark: I see the packages going through and answers coming back, thought the packets I see passing are far less than they are if I successfully connect to another HTTPS website. See the attached screenshot: I had to blur the IPs, anyway the longer string is my PC's local IP address, the shorter one is the customer's public IP. I don't know what else to try. This is the only IP doing this... Any idea what could I try to find a solution to this issue? Thanks, let me know if you need further details. Edit: when I say "it doesn't work" I mean: the page doesn't open, the browser keeps loading for a long time and eventually shows an error saying that the page cannot be opened. I'm not in my office now so I can't paste the exact message, but it's the usual message you get when the browser reaches its timeout. When I say "it works", I mean the browser loads and shows a webpage (it's the logon page for the customers' firewall admin interface: so there's the firewall brand's logo and there are fields to enter a user id and a password). Update 13/09/2012: tried again to connect to the customer's network through our Internet connection without a firewall. This is what I did: Run a Kubuntu 12.04 live distro on a spare laptop; Updated all the packages I could and installed WireShark; Attached it to my LAN and verified that I couldn't open https://<customer's IP>. Verified that the Wireshark trace for this attempt was the same as the one I've already posted; Verified that I could connect to another customer's host using rdesktop (it worked); Tried to rdesktop to <customer's IP>, here's the output: kubuntu@kubuntu:/etc$ rdesktop <customer's IP> Autoselected keyboard map en-us ERROR: recv: Connection reset by peer Disconnected the laptop from the LAN; Disconnected the firewall from the Extranet connection, connected the laptop instead. Set its network configuration so that I could access the Internet; Verified that I could connect to other websites in http and https and in RDP to other customers' hosts - it all worked as expected; Verified that I could still traceroute to <customer's IP>: I could; Verified that I still couldn't open https://<customer's IP> (same exact result as before); Checked the WireShark trace for this attempt and noticed a different behaviour: I could see packets going out to the customer's IP, but no replies at all; Tried to run rdesktop again, with a slightly different result: kubuntu@kubuntu:/etc/network$ rdesktop <customer's IP> Autoselected keyboard map en-us ERROR: <customer's IP>: unable to connect Finally gave up, put everything back as it was before, turned off the laptop and lost the WireShark traces I had saved. :( I still remember them very well though. :) Can you get anything out of it? Thank you very much. Update 12/09/2012 n.2: I followed the suggestion by MadHatter in the comments. From inside the firewall, this is what I get: user@ubuntu-mantis:~$ openssl s_client -connect <customer's IP>:443 CONNECTED(00000003) If I now type GET / the output pauses for several seconds and then I get: write:errno=104 I'm going to try the same, but bypassing the firewall, as soon as I can. Thanks. Update 12/09/2012 n.3: So, I think ISA Server is altering the results of my tests... I tried installing Wireshark directly on the firewall and monitoring the packets on the Extranet network card. When the destination is the customer's IP, whatever service I try to connect to (HTTPS, RDP or SAProuter), I can only see outbound packets and no response packets whatsoever from their side. It looks like ISA Server is "faking" the remote server's replies, that's why I get a connection using telnet or the openSSL client. This is the wireshark trace from inside our LAN: But this is the trace on the Extranet network card: This makes a bit more sense... I'll send this info to the customer's tech and see if he can make anything out of it. Thanks to all that took the time to read my question and post suggestions. I'll update this post again.

• What should every programmer know about web development?

  What things should a programmer implementing the technical details of a web application before making the site public? If Jeff Atwood can forget about HttpOnly cookies, sitemaps, and cross-site request forgeries all in the same site, what important thing could I be forgetting as well? I'm thinking about this from a web developer's perspective, such that someone else is creating the actual design and content for the site. So while usability and content may be more important than the platform, you the programmer have little say in that. What you do need to worry about is that your implementation of the platform is stable, performs well, is secure, and meets any other business goals (like not cost too much, take too long to build, and rank as well with Google as the content supports). Think of this from the perspective of a developer who's done some work for intranet-type applications in a fairly trusted environment, and is about to have his first shot and putting out a potentially popular site for the entire big bad world wide web. Also, I'm looking for something more specific than just a vague "web standards" response. I mean, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS over HTTP are pretty much a given, especially when I've already specified that you're a professional web developer. So going beyond that, Which standards? In what circumstances, and why? Provide a link to the standard's specification.

• Observable Adapter

  .NET 4.0 introduced a pair of interfaces, IObservable<T> and IObserver<T>, supporting subscriptions to and notifications for push-based sequences. In combination with Reactive Extensions (Rx), these interfaces provide a convenient and uniform way of describing event sources and sinks in .NET. The StreamInsight CTP refresh in November 2009 included an Observable adapter supporting “reactive” event inputs and outputs.   While we continue to believe it enables an important programming model, the Observable adapter was not included in the final (RTM) release of Microsoft StreamInsight 1.0. The release takes a dependency on .NET 3.5 but for timing reasons could not take a dependency on .NET 4.0. Shipping a separate copy of the observable interfaces in StreamInsight – as we did in the CTP refresh – was not a viable option in the RTM release.   Within the next months, we will be shipping another preview of the Observable adapter that targets .NET 4.0. We look forward to gathering your feedback on the new adapter design! We plan to include the Observable adapter implementation into the product in a future release of Microsoft StreamInsight. • Problems with Adobe Flash

  I'm running Windows 7, 64-Bit on a Core-i5 HP Notebook. For approximately the last 3 months, I've had major problems with Adobe Flash. Flash has been uninstalled and installed again multiple times. No changes. Here is what happens in different browsers: (All browsers are in the latest version as of this post) Firefox: Doesn't work at all. This bothers me most, since FF is my favorite browser; I'm using a lot of Plugins. Have tried to de-activate all Plugins, but no change. IE and Chrome: Works, but most pages with Flash are stuck during page load for ~30 seconds. After that, everything is fine. Opera: No problems, everything working as it should. Strange, eh? Any help is highly appreciated!
