  • Possible reasons and resolutions for time out

    I cannot SSH into my instance - Operation timed out. What could be the reasons why, and what can I do to resolve it? Rebooting normally takes a long time to take effect, and might just makes things worst UPDATE: It is not about permissions - i can log in normally just fine.   • Using AWS S3 for photo storage

    I'm going to be using S3 to store user uploaded photos. Obviously, I wont be serving the image files to user agents without resizing them down. However, not one size would do, as some thumbnails will be smaller than other larger previews. So, I was thinking of making a standard set of dimensions scaling from the lowest 16x16 to some highest 1024x1024. Is this a good way to solve this problem? What if I need a new size later on? How would you solve this?

  • Web Deploy 3.0 Installation Fails

    I am having difficulty installing Microsoft Web Deploy 3.0 to a Windows Server 2008 R2 box. I have tried installing with both the Web Platform Installer and the MSI package but installation fails while trying to execute the MSI custom action ExecuteRegisterUIModuleCA. This server is a VM and a member of a farm but shared config is disabled while I'm installing. I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, J2EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

  • Token based Authentication and Claims for Restful Services

    WIF as it exists today is optimized for web applications (passive/WS-Federation) and SOAP based services (active/WS-Trust). While there is limited support for WCF WebServiceHost based services (for standard credential types like Windows and Basic), there is no ready to use plumbing for RESTful services that do authentication based on tokens. This is not an oversight from the WIF team, but the REST services security world is currently rapidly changing – and that’s by design. There are a number of intermediate solutions, emerging protocols and token types, as well as some already deprecated ones. So it didn’t make sense to bake that into the core feature set of WIF. But after all, the F in WIF stands for Foundation. So just like the WIF APIs integrate tokens and claims into other hosts, this is also (easily) possible with RESTful services. Here’s how. HTTP Services and Authentication Unlike SOAP services, in the REST world there is no (over) specified security framework like WS-Security. Instead standard HTTP means are used to transmit credentials and SSL is used to secure the transport and data in transit. For most cases the HTTP Authorize header is used to transmit the security token (this can be as simple as a username/password up to issued tokens of some sort). The Authorize header consists of the actual credential (consider this opaque from a transport perspective) as well as a scheme. The scheme is some string that gives the service a hint what type of credential was used (e.g. Basic for basic authentication credentials). HTTP also includes a way to advertise the right credential type back to the client, for this the WWW-Authenticate response header is used. So for token based authentication, the service would simply need to read the incoming Authorization header, extract the token, parse and validate it. After the token has been validated, you also typically want some sort of client identity representation based on the incoming token. This is regardless of how technology-wise the actual service was built. In ASP.NET (MVC) you could use an HttpModule or an ActionFilter. In (todays) WCF, you would use the ServiceAuthorizationManager infrastructure. The nice thing about using WCF’ native extensibility points is that you get self-hosting for free. This is where WIF comes into play. WIF has ready to use infrastructure built-in that just need to be plugged into the corresponding hosting environment: Representation of identity based on claims. This is a very natural way of translating a security token (and again I mean this in the widest sense – could be also a username/password) into something our applications can work with. Infrastructure to convert tokens into claims (called security token handler) Claims transformation Claims-based authorization So much for the theory.   • How agile methodologies can be applied in a typical " services " company?

    My company is a custom software services company for external clientes, which means our typical project is one in which the contract already states the full budget of the project. Our typical project starts by defining requirements (improving the proposal high-level requirements), then we code the project, test it and ship it. We have an acceptance phase were the client tests the software and in that phase we can usually implement small changes asked by the client, or we charge extra for change requests. In some projects we have intermediate releases so the clients can check the progress of the project and give feedback on it. In summary: something like waterfall... I've followed the "agile" movement for a bit now and I always see it being a good match for a "product" company, or a company building software for an internal client. But are there good stories / advantages on using agile methods in my kind of company/projects? What are your experiences, what do you think about this?

  • Why is web app development path in Java this much confusing? [closed]

    I'm currently a .net web developer and I really like to switch to Java. I've used JSP about 7 years ago to develop and deploy a small web application on a JRUN app server. But after 7 years that I like to return back to Java, I can't find the clue. There are many web development frameworks that exist in Java world and each of them has fans that recommand it. There are extensions that sit above jvm for web development (like jRuby i think). I am confused and I do not know where to start the path of learning java web development. I do not want to focus on custom tailor-made approaches and want to remain on the basic path of developing with standard tools and methods and deploy them into standard app servers. (For example some says do not use EJBs, some says focus on MVC facilities like JSF. I'm confused and I do not know the path that i should go on)

  • Am I getting paid a reasonable wage for web engineering?

    I've been doing some research and it looks like most people in my line of work - WEB ENGINEERING/WEB APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - that get paid hourly, make anywhere from $30-80 an hour for their work. With that said, I have SEVEN years of experience with web development including OOP-PHP, MySQL, jQuery, OOP-JS, interface design, ajax, database architecture, etc. I am also very strong with visual design and workflow - thus, I've made some really high quality interactive interfaces. I also have a lot of experience with Zend Framework, Symfony, Wordpress, Drupal, etc and a really strong portfolio to show for it. Here's the catch: I'm 20 years old, haven't graduated from college yet (I'm doing part time school and ~30 hours a week of web development.) But I've literally been doing web apps since I was 13 years old. So my question is: is $14 an hour a reasonable starting wage for working at a company part time?

My only experience with servers and hosting is uploading through FTP and playing around with CPanel/WHM a little. The role's I'm going for are web development PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS type roles, but in recent interviews I've been asked questions about setting up things on the server, that I had no idea what was being said... which wasn't ideal! Without knowing more than I do, it's hard to explain what exactly I'm looking to learn, but it's basically just the server elements I should know as a web developer? If you're a web developer, do you have any dealing with the server apart from uploading files, and if so, what? Are things like Subversion(SVN) and version control systems often set up by the web development team, could that be what they were talking about?

(default) ItemShowTreeList.Show(OpcSrv.ServerName); } In the above web method I need to pass the values to the built-in function ShowBrowseTreeList() (found in OPC, OPCDA, OPCDA.NET namespaces). This function takes the two parameter of windows form control type. These parameters are Treeview & ListView control of the windows form. In the above web method ShowBrowseTreeList() method automatically create the treeview & listview structure of the available items. Now as I am consuming the web service so I need to pass the values to the webmethod getOPCServerItems(). But as I my consuming application is asp.net application there is no such windows form control. In asp.net application there are also & control. I want to display The data returned in these asp.net controls rather than windows form control. I am not getting the way what should I need to do or how should I pass the values form my client application to this web service ? In the above method getOPCServerItems() when I use the parameter of type treeview & listview it generate s error "Cannot serialize member System.ComponentModel.Component.Site of type System.ComponentModel.ISite because it is an interface.". Can you provide me the the way In which I can write the above web method & how should I pass parameter to the Treeview & Listview control (windows form control) from my asp.net application ? which controls I should use to pass parameters ? Is there any need to do any type of casting ? Can you provide me the the code for above web method so that I can resolve the above issue ?

The simplest thing I could think of is doing an HTML form which calls a PHP script which appends the data in some file on the server.   • How do you do a keyword search the Services.msc (mmc) window in Windows 7?

    When you want to run a service, you have very limited capabilities, in all current Windows versions, as far as I can tell. I usually start Services by typing "services.msc" into the Start-Run box, on most versions of Windows, this works. I know how to click the "Name" column in the MMC view of Windows Services. If you know what the first few characters of a service name is, you can usually sort by the name, and type the prefix to scroll the list down (find Windows Search for example). This seems pretty weak to me, so I spent some time searching the interwebs for tools that do a better job of managing services. Usually I have a keyword that I know "fooWare" might be the keyword, and I need to find the (usually badly named) service and start it and stop it. This is often WAY too hard. The best I could do is "NET SERVICES" from the command line, and maybe add a grep in there, but that doesn't list every service, only a few of them. And the MMC snap-in in Win7 now has an Export List button, exporting to csv text file feature which I have used from time to time, to export and then search. I have thought of writing my own tool. I'm hoping a better "service manager" utility exists out there that sysadmins use. I'd like a search box at the top right corner, kind of the same way that the Add-Remove-Programs dialog in Win7 and Vista has a search facility. Does such a services utility exist out there?

  • Java - Problem in deploying Web Application

    I have built a Java Web Application and packed it in a .war file and tested it on my local tomcat server and it is running fine. But when I deployed it on my client's server, it is showing an error. According to the remote server (my client's server), it is not finding a tld file packed in a jar file which I had placed in WEB-INF/lib directory. But when I checked the WEB-INF/lib directory for the jar file, i found that it was there. The contents of META-INF/MANIFEST.MF is as follows: Manifest-Version: 1.0 Class-Path: I think that there is no need to explicitly mention the classpath of WEB-INF/lib directory as it is in the classpath of any web application by default. Then, why the server can't find the jar file in the lib directory when I deployed it on a remote server and why it is working when I deployed the same application on my local server. I posted a question for this at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2441254/struts-1-struts-taglib-jar-is-not-being-found-by-my-web-application but found that the problem is unusual as nobody could answer it. So my questions are as follows: Q1. Is WEB-INF/lib still remains on the classpath if I leave the classpath entry blank as shown above in the MANIFEST.MF file or I should delete the classpath entry completely from the file or I should explicitly enter Class-Path: /WEB-INF/lib as the classpath entry? Q2. I have JSP pages, Servlets and some helper classes in the web application. Jsp pages are located at the root. Servlets and helper classes are located in WEB-INF/classes folder. So Is there any problem if my helper classes are located in the WEB-INF/classes folder? Note: Please note that this question is not same as my previous question. It is a follow-up question of my previous question. Both the servers (local and remote) are tomcat servers.

    I have a webservice with a method which is called via a xmlhttprequest object in my javascript. The method accepts a datetime parameter which is subsequently converted to a string and run against the database to perform a calculation. I get the value from m_txtDateAdd and send off the xmlHttprequest <asp:textbox id=m_txtDateAdd tabIndex=4 runat="server" Width="96px" Text="<%# Today %>"> </asp:textbox> which has a validator attacted to it <asp:CustomValidator id="m_DateAddValidator" runat="server" ErrorMessage="Please Enter a Valid Date" ControlToValidate="m_txtDateAdd">&#x25CF;</asp:CustomValidator> My webmethod looks something like this [WebMethod] public decimal GetTotalCost(DateTime transactionDate) { String sqlDateString = transactionDate.Year+"/"+transactionDate.Month+"/"+transactionDate.Day; I use sqlDateString as part of the commandtext i send off to the database. Its a legacy application and its inline sql so I don't have the freedom to set up a stored procedure and create and assign parameters in my code behind. This works 90% of the time. The webservice is called on the onchange event of m_txtDateAdd. Every now and again the response i get from the server is System.ArgumentException: Cannot convert 25/06/2009 to System.DateTime.   • "NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON" error in Windows 7 (ASP.NET & Web Service)

    I have an asp.net web app which works fine in Windows XP machine in a domain. I am porting it to a Windows 7 stand alone machine. The app uses a web service which makes a call to sql server. The web server (IIS 7.5) and SQL Server are on the same stand alone machine. I enabled Windows authentication for the website and web service. The web service uses a trusted connection connection string. The web service credentials uses System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. I noticed username, password and domainname are blank after the call! The webservice and web site use an application pool with identity "Network Service". I am getting an exception "NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON" in the database call in the web service. I am assuming it's related to the blank credentials. I am expecting ASPNET user to be the security token to the database. Why is this not happening? (Usually this happens when sql server and web server are on two different machines in a domain, delegation & double hopping, but in my case everything is on a dev box)

  • Java Client interoperating with WSE 3.0 Web Service

    I have a Interoperable Security Token Service (STS) that authenticates the User and then issues a SAML token. I also have transaction services that expects the SAML token in the incoming SOAP request header. For a client to make a call to transaction service, it first needs to authenticate with the STS, get the SAML token and then make a call to the transaction services. The STS is an interoperable service and can be invoked from a Java client. The Transaction services are build using WSE 3.0 framework, but the WSDL that it generates is not good enough for a Java client to understand it. I want my Java client to explicitly call the STS and then using the received SAML token make a call to Transaction Services. I tried with Netbeans and Metro WSIT toolkit. I was able to call the Transaction Services if it were implemented using WCF. With WCF Transaction Service the WSDL generated has complete information using which the Java client can figure out how to call to STS and then call the WCF Transaction service. How can my Java client explicitly call the STS and then in turn call the WSE 3.0 transaction services?

  • Integrated Security on Reporting Services XML Datasource

    Hey all, I am working on setting up my report server to use a web service as an XML datasource. I seem to be having authentication issues between the web service and the report with I choose to use Integrated security. Here's what I have: 1) I have a website w/ an exposed service. This website is configured to run ONLY on Integrated Security. This means that we have all other modes turned off AND Enabled anonymous access turned off under directory security. 2) Within the Web.config of the website, I have the authentication mode set to Windows. 3) I have the report datasource set to being an XML data source. I have the correct URL to the service and have it set to Windows Integrated Security. Since I am making a hop from the Browser to the Reporting Server to the Web Service, I wonder if I am having an issue w/ Kerberos, but I am not sure. When I try to access the service, I get a 401 error. A simple "Hello World" application indicates that Mono is properly installed and working, It is just my app that is causing this exception to be thrown.
