Pendrive USB Ubuntu installation - black screen on boot

I see many posts on this, but no solution. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my 16GB USB flash drive using this official link using their tool Universal USB Installer. Installation to USB went fine so I set my laptop to boot from USB and the Ubuntu was recognized. I saw the usual boot screen and I chose option "Run Ubuntu from this USB". The boot process started and after 5-6 seconds the screen goes black and non-responsive. I thought that it hang on X loading so I tried switching to console via Ctrl+Alt+F1-6 but the system did not respond. Why is this happening? Am I doing something wrong? PS. My laptop is HP Pavillion G6

does not boot after install, my troubleshooting and google fu have failed me

I can only get an install to "stick" if I use shred to zerofill my drive first. Otherwise, when I install ubuntu or lubuntu 12.04, I will get "grub rescue: out of disk". With the aforementioned (completely default) install on top of a zerofilled drive, then rebooting after installing updates will tell me there is no operating system. I don't even get to grub. Installing on top of the failed install, while choosing "erase ubuntu 12.04 and reinstall", I get the grub rescue: out of disk error. The hard drive has been repeatedly tested and does not have any read or write errors. I've used check disk for errors on the pen drive I'm installing from and it comes up clean as well. The system is an inspiron 6000, with 1gb ram and a 250 gb hard drive. I'm typing this from a live cd on the same machine. What gives?

Enabling Nvidia driver messes up splash screen

When you boot from live CD, or doing the first boot after installing Ubuntu, splash screen looks awesome. But as soon as you enable nvidia-current driver, installed with apt-get, splash screen goes all crazy. With crazy I mean that resolution is very low, font(I assume) is very weird and it all looks like it's been broken. This happened with 10.04 and now again with 10.10. How do I fix splash screen after enabling nvidia drivers?

Ubuntu 12.10 hangs on checking battery state

I have a Thinkpad X230. After a boot it hangs with checking battery state [OK]. A second boot is most times successful. What I have seen in other posts doesn't fit to my problem, because My graphics card is Intel 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics controller (not nvidia) It happens not always I have a fresh installed 12.10 with the latest updates (no upgrade) Does anyone experience the same issues or has a solution?

After update, grub is broken.

Some months back I used wubi to install ubuntu on an hp laptop with vista. After not using it for a month or so, I loaded ubuntu and installed many updates (including kernel update). Windows boot manager loads without any problems, and I can boot to vista without problems. However, if I choose ubuntu, the screen briefly flashes Try (hd0,0) : NTFS5 and then goes to black. I never get to the kernel image selection screen.

ACPI=OFF in Ubuntu 11.10

When I tried to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 the system froze, so I've been playing around with a couple other linux builds (Fedora, Mint, and Puppy) the last couple days and I keep coming around to the same problem: a lockup during boot; each build referencing a kernel error. On another board someone suggested booting with a boot up line of "ACPI = off". It works with other OS', but I'm not sure where to put this command. Can anyone 'enlighten' me, please?

Black screen on boot. FailsafeX: "Screen not found"

I made a regular update using update center yesterday on My Samsung NP730U3E with Ubuntu gnome 13.10 and today it won't start. Or rather: it just gives me a black screen. On start up I get to enter my encryption password and everything seems fine. But after the encryption password is accepted it just blanks out. When I boot into recovery mode and try to boot failsafeX it returns "Fatal server error: (EE) no screens found (EE)" After booting into recovery mode and "Resume normal boot" I get to the tty1 prompt. If I head over to "tty7", where the graphical things usually are going on I just see this (and it's frozen): What to do?

I didn't know this when I was allocating space to my partitions during my initial install of Ubuntu. As a result I ran out of space on my boot partition. no windows 7 option after recent 12.10 install and boot repair

Earlier today i installed ubuntu 12.10 beta. Grub wasn't booting, but just going directly to my primary OS Windows 7. I assumed i had partitioned incorrectly, because partitioning isnt my strong suit. I used boot repair because it was well recomanded off a live usb. Afterwards, grub appeared, but i only had options for Ubuntu, Advanced Ubuntu Option, and my hidden windows 7 recovery partition. Please help me recover my access to windows partiton. Ubuntu 11.10 error message at startup after clean install

I have just installed Ubuntu 11.10 (did a fresh install and erased 11.04). After the reboot it appeared a log on the screen, saying all the starting services on the left and [OK] on the right. However, two particular entries, starting automatic crash report installation and starting restore sound card(s') mixer state(s) were set on [FAIL]. After that, Ubuntu did not boot. Is there any way that i can skip those two entries and boot Ubuntu?

A Windows Update Prevented Live Discs From Working? [migrated]

First off I'll state my system specs. Acer Aspire M1100 Windows Vista Home Basic 32bit OEM 2 Gigs of DDR2 ram 160Gig hard drive 2.7Ghz AMD Athlon 64 processor ATI Radeon X1250 Graphics card A few days ago my computer did automatic updates and updated windows defender to KB915597 (Definition 1.135.415.0), After which when shutting down and starting up I would receive BSOD with the information BUGCODE_USE_DRIVER and 0x000000FE (0x00000008, 0x00000006, 0x00000006, 0x877330000) upon where my computer would not start up with any USB devices plugged in and it always require me to run startup repair before it started. Upon when I first started it up and was able to fully boot windows, I had no use of the mouse so I was unable to install the fix that the windows solutions center brought up on my screen, so I restarted again and installed the fix hoping it would cease the problem, it did not. Upoon starting up after installing the fix and restarting I was confronted with the BSOD 0x000000FE (0x00000008, 0x00000006, 0x00000006, 0x83291000) at which I found the startup repair could not fix the problem and I restored, as I most like should have in the first place. After going through that I read that simply installing the latest defender version from the microsoft site had fixed this problem for others, so I did that, to find I still received the BSOD's. So in a attempt to find a fix to the problem I went to the microsoft answers site to try to find a way to fix the problem, there I was told to simply disable defender and reboot to see if that fixed the problem, upon doing this my computer would no longer even startup, when I boot normally I get to just when the loading screen finishes and then my computer restarts and when I run startup repair, it runs for about 15 seconds and then my computer restarts as well. I have tried running ubuntu live discs in order to simply access the drive and simply copy and paste the 2 month old physical backup I have of my C drive to the C drive, but whenever I run the live OS when it gets to the end of the load screen and is about to boot, the computer again restarts, yet if I put in a gparted disc, I am able to boot it fully, although it does not give me access to the file system just partition managing and when I attempt to access the internet through it, the computer once again restarts. So my question is, how could the update and what has happened prevent me from running the live OS's properly?

Windows 7 professional won't boot after installing ubuntu 11.10 alongside

I can't boot into windows 7 professional after installing ubuntu 11.10 alongside windows as a dual boot. Windows starts to boot but then it stops during start up and "crashes". I do not have an installation or repair disc and windows is not registered as I built the computer in a class. Please help anybody who is familiar with ubuntu. Optimally I would like to just uninstall ubuntu altogether as GRUB scares me a little and Ubuntu isn't as good as windows 7 and "Bleeped" stuff up. I tried google and nothing that great came up and also I can't find a phone # to contact ubuntu/linux. :-( Specs: OS: Windows 7 professional x64, Ubuntu unity 11.10; CPU: Intel Celeron 2.6 GHz; 2 GB of RAM; Built in september or october 2011. Desktop Homebuilt PC.

Installed Ubuntu and lost access to Windows

I installed it by using a load of unallocated space on a completely separate hard drive than the one Windows is installed to. When I choose Windows on the boot menu I get this: 'Invalid EFI path' Any idea why this is? EDIT: Here is information from boot info script. http://paste.ubuntu.com/1202156/ I think it might be because I have more than 4 partitions on the drive? Although I am not sure what the one labelled as 'unknown' is at all.

I created a LiveUSB of Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS using Pendrive Linux. -Created a separate 30GB partition using Windows 8 Disk Management -Disabled Secure Boot (Didn't find an option to disable EFI boot) -Disabled Fast Startup The laptop starts the GRUB menu shows up but it doesn't go beyond that no matter what option i choose. After choosing any option the screen goes blank but the power is still on i can see the power light. Issue with kernel boot [OVH SERVER]

Trying to install OpenVZ kernel on Centos 6.3, Yes my kernel is installed i can see it in the /boot folder, yes it is Rhel6 and yes it is all up to date, i checked this with yum update. NAS4Free disk encryption and ZFS error

I have installed a NAS4Free on a VM, and as recommended, i installed it on a 1GB virtual disk, and assigned another disk 500GB to this VM for file storage. I have created the disk, encrypted it, created a ZFS virtual disk, and then a ZFS storage pool. Everything was working. On every restart of this VM i needed to go on and mount the encrypted drive. Recently i upgraded the host machine, and now i cant mount or make it work. I have tried removing everything and setting up from scratch everything, with the exception of formating the disk, i have used an encrypted one without formating it. Does anybody have any suggestion on how can i at least get back my data, can i mount somehow the encrypted drive even in another utility, just need to get back the data that were on it.

Convert Spanned Dynamic disk to Basic Help needed.

Hello all, Here is my scenario; Windows 2008 server on a VM Two VM disks; Disk1 OS Basic Disk2 Data and an Installed Application. Basic Durng the weekend, I was playing with this VM, I wanted to add some space to the Disk2. Created a new disk (disk3), converted it to a Dynamic volum and added this to disk 2 (disk 2 also converted to Dynamic volume) and for some reason these now are spanned volumes. just like an IDOT, I haven't taken any snapshot of this before I've made the changes. My question, is there a way I can re-convert this again to Basic? I don't want to delete and recreate the disk volumes because of the application installed on the disk 2 Any solution or tips I can use?

How do I make a VMDK format virtual hard drive from a physical partition on a disk?

I have a 320 GB HDD, which actually only has an 80 GB NTFS format partition which was being used by a Windows 7 system ... I want to create a VMDK format clone of this partition, so that I can use it with VMware .. However, tradition VMDK creation programs normally make a VMDK for an entire disk, whereas I just want to make a VMDK for the one 80 GB partition ... This is important because the other 240 GB on the physical source HDD is just unallocated area, and including that in a VMDK file is just a plain waste of space .. So how to make a VMDK file for a specific partition ? Any tool available for this ?

Cloning single disk drive to multiple drives simultaneously

Hi, I am looking for a way to clone single disk drive to more than one disk drive at the same time. I have prepared system images on 1TB disks, and it takes almost 2 hours to clone one disk to another, and then it goes up exponentially, in order to have say 30 disks cloned. If it was possible to clone one disk to more than single target, it would simplify whole procedure a lot. Also, is there something that prevents this kind of operation? I mean, is there some special reason why every disk cloning software that I know about supports only single target drive? Thanks!

Hello I am trying to Burn a disk let me catch you up where I am at as I have a very SPECIFIC question and it may be difficult to explain but I will try to keep it simple: I have software already in an ISO file; I am using Daemon tools on a Windows based PC What I am wanting to do is create the actual Picture (not disk image file) that will show up on the Disk drive when I insert the disk Eg: if you put microsoft Office 11 in your comp. you open up My Computer to view all your HD and Disk drives you will see the image that microsoft put on the disk which is a silver CD and the Microsoft Office logo on the top corner. I would like to know how to edit my current ISO file or what I need to do in order to put "A PICTURE" or "AN ICON FILE" on the CD/DVD so that when I insert the disk into any PC it will show up with the PICTURE OR ICON file I chose and look proffessional. Cannot find my hard disk while installing linux-“No root file system defined” error

I am trying install Linux on my computer (tried Ubuntu 10.4 and Linux Mint 9). I started the installation wizard and on the hard disk selection page the hard disk is not displayed. I have a 500GB disk with 5 partitions and windows 7 ultimate in one partition. If I click the forward button, it shows an error- "No root file system defined". I have tried to install by booting from CD and pendrive but both shows the same error. When I load Linux as live CD it doesn't show the hard disk. My hard disk works fine in windows 7. System config: intel i3 2100, 500GB hdd, 2GB ram
