• Flash Dynamic text in embedded movie

  Hi I have my movie in the main timeline and then have a smaller clip in which there is a dynamic text box. In that smaller movie I have some actionscript myVars = new LoadVars(); myVars.load("http://preview.domain.co.uk/inc/loadVars.php"); myVars.percentage myVars.onLoad = function() { text_box.text = this.percentage; }; but when I play the movie it doesn't work. However if I move the dynamic textbox onto the main timeline it works. Please can someone help.

• mySQL Left Join on multiple tables

  Hi I'm really struggling with this query. I have 4 tables (http://oberto.co.nz/db-sql.png): Invoice_Payement, Invoice, Client and Calendar. I'm trying to create a report by summing up the 'paid_amount' col, in Invoice_Payment, by month/year. The query needs to include all months, even those with no data There query needs the condition (Invoice table): registered_id = [id] I have tried with the below query, which works, but falls short when 'paid_date' does not have any records for a month. The outcome is that month does not show in the results I added a Calendar table to resolved this but not sure how to left join to it. SELECT MONTHNAME(Invoice_Payments.date_paid) as month, SUM(Invoice_Payments.paid_amount) AS total FROM Invoice, Client, Invoice_Payments WHERE Client.registered_id = 1 AND Client.id = Invoice.client_id And Invoice.id = Invoice_Payments.invoice_id AND date_paid IS NOT NULL GROUP BY YEAR(Invoice_Payments.date_paid), MONTH(Invoice_Payments.date_paid) Please see the above link for a basic ERD diagram of my scenario. • NoClassDefFoundError points to the wrong class.

  I'm validating the installation of a program that consists of a few separate modules. They are not co-dependent. I have apple.jar and orange.jar, they are placed in the same folder and were developed in the same project, but run independent of each other. Running apple.jar goes fine, but orange.jar gives me a NoClassDefFoundError pointing to apple.jar. /usr/java/jre1.6.0_14/bin/java -jar validator.jar Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: orange/client/Apple Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: orange.client.Apple at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(Unknown Source) Could not find the main class: validator/client/StormDataXMLGenerator. • How small is *too small* for an opensource project?

  I have a fair number of smaller projects / libraries that I have been using over the past 2 years. I am thinking about moving them to Google Code to make it easier to share with co-workers and easier to import them into new projects on my own environments. The are things like a simple FSMs, CAN (Controller Area Network) drivers, and GPIB drivers. Most of them are small (less than 500 lines), so it makes me wonder are these types of things too small for a stand alone open-source project? Note that I would like to make it opensource because it does not give me, or my company, any real advantage.

• Relative Position in PHP between 2 points (Lat/Long)

  I have a database of airports with Latitude and Longitude for each point. I want to run a PHP script to find all airports that are nearby a given airport, with their distance and relative direction. I.e. for Airport KLDJ (40-37-02.810N 074-14-40.539W) Airport Nearby KJFK - John F Kennedy Airport (21.2 nm NE) (40-38-23.104N 073-46-44.132W) I have used code from http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html to find distance, and tried to use it to find bearing, which might not be right. //BEARING RHUMB LINE $phi = log(tan($lat2/2+pi/4)/tan($lat1/2+pi/4)); $distance['bearing'] = (rad2deg(atan2($theta, $phi)) +180) % 360; I basically want to run all points through this script and find the distance, which I have already, but then the direction. (i.e. N, S, W, E, NW, SW, NE, SE)

• Rails best practice on conditional parameters in a controller action

  I have a controller create action looks for one or more parameters in the following ruleset. Let's say we have two parameters, foo and bar. The rules are the following: 1) if foo doesn't exist in the parameter list, bar must. 2) if bar doesn't exist in the parameter list, foo must. 3) they can both co-exist. they can't both be omitted (that's redundant with my rules above :) ) Can anyone show an example in Rails on how this is handled in the controller? Should I use a before_filter? Would appreciate some guidance as this isn't something that ActiveRecord validates.. so I'd need to build an error message to the user directly from controller logic, not model logic. For bonus points, I output the error in XML, so if you can show how that's done, that'd be great. Hypothetically let's call the resource "Lorem", so it is created via http://foo/lorem.xml and we have lorem_controller.rb.

• Configuring IoC container from modules/plug-ins ?

  Hi guys, i am in big dilema.. I am working on highly modular web app in ASP.NET MVC 2 (in fact, core will be super lightweight, all work on modules/plugins). I found MEF pretty useful for modules discovery, but i dont want to us it as IoC container. There is pretty good chance that I will need advanced features of "true" IoC container, so I would like to use Unity. And here is the problem : how to allow modules to configure container (programatically) = register their own types (mvc controllers, custom implementations of services...) at application start without making hard dependency on Unity in all modules ? I know about Common Service Locator project, and it seems pretty good, but this interface co container only allows resolving types, not registering them (afaik). I really hope you can understand my point, I know my english is terrible (I am from non english speaking country :) Thanks a lot !

It seems to create a transparant clone as your dragging, but when you drop it puts the draggable div in the right place, but leaves the original div in it's place and just appends the dom with a clone of that original div in its new place.

• Adding a new view to a Window-based app (re: MapKit tutorial)

  I'm trying add a new view in a window-based application but not really getting anywhere. I've been going through a great MapKit tutorial lately, http://mithin.in/2009/06/22/using-iphone-sdk-mapkit-framework-a-tutorial/ and have successfully set it up and added some further buttons and customizations. However I've gotten stuck at what I assume ought to be a brain-dead simple step. I have added a toolbar to the bottom of the app, and a 'settings' style button. Following this I created a SettingsViewController complete with it's own view. Now I'd like to connect them but I've had absolutely no luck trying to figure out how to do this. • Custom capistrano task for working with scm repository

  Is there any way to create a custom capistrano task for performing other actions on a scm repository? For instance, I would like to create a task that will checkout a particular folder from my repository and then symlink it into the shared/ directory of the main project on my server. I know this can be done by creating a task and explicity defining the "svn co ..." command along with the scm username, password, and repository location. But this would display the password in plain text. Are there any built-in capistrano variables/methods that would help in this process?

• What's the ROI of using a build tool like ant or nant?

  To me this sounds like a really stupid question. Why would you not use a build tool? However, I need to explain my co-worker why he should be using a build tool of some sort. He's getting really into the idea of working as a team with more programmers, but he isn't understanding the bigger picture of what needs to change in the build process in order to work with a larger team; (i.e. defensive programming/unit testing your code, having a bug database, programming modular libraries, and using sub-repositories to store modules in version control. This is a rather large stack of technologies that I need to prove the ROI of...so I figured I'd start with the ROI of using a build tool rather than just...say...clicking compile.

• Large number of Google Map Markers and IE6?

  I'm working on an application that generates a large number of Google Map markers (2000 - 7000) via JSON. I'm also using MarkerCluster. It works quick on Chrome and FF but IE6 takes few minutes and just crashes the first time I try to zoom in. I'm not doing any more than just adding the markers to a map using JQuery & GMap API. So I looked at the following URL of the regular Google Map. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=hotel&sll=53.182996,-2.581787&sspn=1.494529,4.927368&ie=UTF8&split=1&rq=1&ev=p&hq=hotel&hnear=&ll=53.123702,-2.730103&spn=1.496594,4.927368&t=h&z=8 It shows a lot of tiny markers (~1000) and works fine on IE6. Do you have any ideas why this works and the markers added via the API struggles? Thanks

• Entity framework, adding custom entity to diagram

  Hello I'm using the entity framework that comes with 3.5sp1, and I'm trying to add a custom entity that I will propulate with searchresults from a stored procedure. But I have problems with the designer....... when I pick "Add + Entity" and give it a name, and hit save, the whole diagram stops working...... blah entities namespace could not be found..... all the other entities have lost its reference or summet. Works when I add a "table" to it that exists in database. But when custom it screws everything up. How should I fix this? I've imported the function, I just need to add an entity for it... I've read http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/gilf/archive/2009/03/13/mapping-stored-procedure-results-to-a-custom-entity-in-entity-framework.aspx but I cant get to step 3 since of all the errors when saving on step 2. /M

• What format do I use to store a relatively small amount of user data

  I am writing a small program for our local high school (pro bono). The program has an interface allows the user to enter school holidays. This is a simple stand alone Windows app. What format should I use to store the data? A big relational data is obviously overkill. My initial plan was to store the data in an XML file. Co-workers have been suggesting that I use JSON files, Access Databases, SQL Lite, and SQL Server Express. There was even a suggestion of old school INI files.

• Filling a screen width

  I'm really struggling to tidy up a web site I am building for someone. I've spent hours on trying to figure this out! I have limited knowledge so the code would be helpful. They want the section at the top (originally two images, now I'm trying background images and css) to fill the width of the browser- no matter what size it is. Does anyone know how to do this? Similarly, is there a setting to get text to fill 100% width of the box, no matter what? I would seriously appreciate even someone helping me move on a step! they want everything to sit tight and inline, in some browsers/screens it does but on mine it spreads out with lots of white space. www.thegees.co.uk is the site.

  Hi folks, this is correlated to a question I asked earlier (question) I have a list of manually created strings such as: lucy87 gordan_king fancy_unicorn77 joplucky_kanga90 base_belong_to_narwhals and a list of randomized strings: johnkdf pancake90kgjd fancy_jagookfk manhattanljg What gives away that the last set of strings are randomized is that sequences such as 'kjg', 'jgf', 'lkd', ... . Any clever way I could separate strings that contain these apparently randomized strings from the crowd? I guess that this plays a lot on the fact that certain characters are more likely to be placed next to others (e.g. 'co', 'ka', 'ja', ...). Any ideas on this one? Kylotan mentioned Reverend, but I am not sure if it can be used fr such purpose. Help would be much appreciated!

• Embeding EasyVideoPlayer Code into Wordpress Theme - Video not showing

  I'm attempting to place some embed code into a Premium WordPress Theme. NOTE: I'm not great when it comes to php. The embed code is produced by a video player called EasyVideoPlayer. (Basically it allows me to use Amazon S3 and gives me feedback on when people stop watching the video.) NOTE:I've contacted both the Wordpress Premium Theme support at Woothemes.com and the video players support for EasyVideoPlayer.com However both tend to stop at the point that another paid product is involved!   In jQuery, when I want to show or hide something, I do this: $('#elementId').show(); $('#elementId').hide(); How do I do this with YUI? I've tried YAHOO.util.Dom.get('elementId').hide(), asked my co-workers, looked at the documentation, and searched Google, and I've found nothing helpful. From the documentation, it looks like this should work YAHOO.util.Dom.get('elementId').setStyle('display', 'none') but of course it does not. All I can think of is this, which sucks because then I'm not using a framework: document.getElementById('elementId').style.display = 'none';

• Device Emulator Mananger and ActiveSync

  I use Device Emulator Manager to fire up my Windows Mobile 5 Emulator. I then right click on the device (in the Device Emulator Manager list) and select cradle. ActiveSync then ties to connect. After a few seconds I get this message: Then if I open up the connection options and press connect: Then it works just fine. So, my question is, how can I get it to connect every time. Right as I cradle. I do this enough times that it is annoying to have the extra step. Has anyone ever been able to figure this out? (Does anyone have this problem too?) FYI My co-workers have the same issue Connecting a real device does not have this issue (It is just when I use an emulator)

• CSS Overflow issue in IE7

  I'm working on a site for a client at the moment, and have it working correctly in all browsers except IE7 (IE6 and IE8 tested fine). It's a WordPress site and the theme is a child theme of the Thematic framework. This is an example of a page that is not displayed correctly in IE7: http://roynesbitt.credit-medics.co.uk/our-donors The main content is forcing vertical and horizontal scrollbars on the main wrapper and is also not pushing the footer down, so that is appearing midway through it. The irony is that this works correctly in IE6, it's just IE7 that is displaying this issue. Any suggestions on how to fix are gratefully received.

As per discussion with my co-worker, we should have corresponding object of BL/DAL layer. But am still looking for more convencing answer.
