  • Years experience over unfinished degree?

    I'm currently in my placement year and working for a great software development company. It was always my intention of getting to this stage through university, getting enough academic experience as well as the year’s placement and then try to get a full time programming job without the need to finish my degree. I decided this from an early stage as I have never really liked the whole university environment. I was so unhappy at university and I’m so happy now I’m on my placement year, I really don’t know if I can go back. My question is, do you think companies will take me on if I apply for other jobs after my placement year and not penalize me for not finishing my degree? I guess at the end of the day I don't want to look back on my life and think "god, why didn't I just spend one more year being unhappy to have a job I love" but I know that even if I get a degree I could still end up without a programming job and this worries me more than anything.

    I am a UI team leader. My team has a lot of projects using different languages/technologies. In some parts we will rewrite (gradually - @Ampt this is for you) the application in order to enable new fresh technologies in and get old dinosaurs out. I am going to use Node Package Manager to set up an "all powerful" build/dependency manager. Can I use NPM to depend on a private github repository? Can I use NPM to depend on SVN? Will NPM play nice with quickbuild? Since each project might have a slightly different structure (think jetty/maven or play!framework) can I configure NPM to install some dependencies in different folders while still running it from the project's root? How can I, using NPM, get development resources out and build a packaged product? (like a war) Yes/No - is there a reason to use grunt? No discussion, just one liners.

    In my experience, a Software Development Team that comprises: 1 Project Manager 1 Tech Lead 1 - 2 Senior Dev 2 - 3 Junior Dev (Fresh grad) Only the Tech Lead & PM (and/or Senor Dev/s) will participate in a meeting with Clients, Domain Experts, Client's technical resource. I can think of the ff potential pitfalls: Important info gets lost Human error (TL/PM might forgot to disseminate info due to pressure or plain human error) Non-verbal info (maybe a presentation using a diagram presented by Domain Expert) Maintaining Ubiquitous language is harder to build since not all team members get to hear the non-dev persons Potential of creative minds are not fully realized (Personally, I am more motivated to think/explore when I am involved with these important meetings) Advantages of this approach: Only one point of contact Less time spent on meetings? Honestly, I am biased & against this approach. I would like to hear your opinions. Is this how you do it in your team? Thanks in advance!

  • Why do most of us use 'i' as a loop counter variable?

    Has anyone thought about why so many of us repeat this same pattern using the same variable names? for (int i = 0; i < foo; i++) { // ... } It seems most code I've ever looked at uses i, j, k and so on as iteration variables. I suppose I picked that up from somewhere, but I wonder why this is so prevalent in software development. Is it something we all picked up from C or something like that? Just an itch I've had for a while in the back of my head.

Is there a certain format they utilize on Programming Requests which helps you to understand exactly how the development team can succeed with this project.     We have a large team of developers and testers. The ratio is one tester for every one developer. We have full bug tracking and reporting systems in place. We have test plans in place. Every change to the product, the testing team is involved in the design of the feature and are included in the development process as much as possible. We build in small iterative blocks, using scrum methodology and every scrum they are included in, including the grooming sessions etc. But every release of the product, they miss even the most simple and obvious defects. How can we improve this?

I don't get a lot of opportunities to learn at my organization since we primarily support existing systems and just fix issues arising on a day to day basis, We are not expected by the parent company to develop solutions from scratch.   • Help deciding on an area of study for a PhD [closed]

    I am going to start a PhD in about 1 year. My undergraduate degree is in computer science and my master's is in artificial intelligence. I want to get ideas about what's going to be hot in say 5 years i.e. what could I spend 3-4 years studying to potentially have expertise that will be applicable to industry and the computing world ? Impossible to answer factually but some ideas and thoughts would be great. I have narrowed my ideas down to AI (yes, even more AI) and information security. AI seems to becoming popular again but security is always a going to be useful. From a career point of view, if I were to stay working in software development then this might actually be the best move but I've always wanted to do a PhD! Many thanks :).

    I need to develop a programm that is going to read some information from a special USB device and access information via Web Socket (socket.io preferred). My client wants to deploy this app on Mac OS X, Windows, Android and iOS. I was looking for development softwares valid for both: Desktop and Mobile, but it is still not clear for me and that´s what I found. Unity - Looks very good but to create a native plugin for reading from the device it lloks like I need the PRO edition. Adobe Air - Looks good but I´m not sure if I can write Native Plugins for all wanted platforms. LiveCode - Still inmature (lots of bugs) and I don´t know if it is possible to write native plugins for my device. Is there any other good platform for my case? What´s your option?

    I am a CS major. I've taken 2 courses in C (Intro to C and CS1) and 1 introductory course to OOP with Java. I really like Java and feel that I have a firm understanding of OOP concepts. I am really interested in web development and would like to learn a programming language that can be used to build dynamic web applications. My question is what language should I learn? I've narrowed it down to python or ruby. Also, I want to learn a programming language that will help me get a job upon graduating.     Small team of developers doing their work here and there. We have a team leader, and is sole responsible for uploading updated source files from the development server to the production server. So let's say, so if an updated files needs to be uploaded to the prod server, that concerned developer shall notify the team lead about it, and then the team lead will update the files to the prod server. So no developer has an access to the prod server except for the team lead. That's our current setup. Now, what we want to do is to give developers a way for uploading their updated files to the server without the team lead intervening in the process. What do you think is the best way to go about this?

    I have been on many development teams and as the team matures decisions about direction are made. These decisions often come back up over and over. Like why don't we fill in this field why didn't we use memcache over a custom solutions. These decisions add up over time and become a significant part of style guides coding standards and unit tests.     I have about 6 years exp. in app. development. Not so long ago I had moved to another company and the problem has started. I ready don't know why the last time Im making so many bugs/mistakes. Of course Im testing the functionality before I send message that its "done", but I really don't know why I can't see trivial bugs. Some time it looks like I didnt test anything, but its not true. Ive always had this problems but now its pain in the a.s. My question is very simple, what happened to me ;)? Ok, joke aside. What do you do to avoid simple mistakes? plzzz don't tell me to use TDD.   • What IDE(s) or editor(s) do companies like Google, Apple, IBM, etc. use?

    Even though I have quite some experience in using various tools, I still can't make up my mind whether I prefer using IDE or a simple editor for code editing. Most IDEs I have experienced are written in Java (like Eclipse) which makes them slow and bulky. What's good about them is that it provides lots of tools. On the other hand editors are usually VERY fast. They can also be extended to become more similar to IDEs but usually I don't do that. However, there is Sublime Text 2 which has some basic code completion built-in. My question would be whether most Enterprise companies like Google, Apple, IBM and etc (except Microsoft because they have AMAZING IDE which, I assume, is used by MS developers) force their workers to use IDEs and whether using plain editor with external tools is considered being not professional? P.S. Not talking about cases like Android development where working without IDE barely possible.

  • Replicating MySQL DB to development machine - bad idea?

    I am considering replicating a production MySQL database to my development machine so I've always got current data. The production database is externally hosted. My development machine is behind an unreliable internet connection. It is entirely possible that the development machine could be disconnected from the internet for extended periods of time (hours). Would there be any adverse effect on the production database by doing this? (I don't strictly need live data - but it would be nice, and good excuse to dabble with replication. If the consensus is that this is a bad idea, I'll set up a daily job to import the previous night's backup into my development database)

  • .NET Development of iPhone App with MonoTouch - which development environment?

    Hi All, I'm a .NET developer (C#) with several years developing Windows Mobile Apps. I would like to get into developing iPhone Apps and MonoTouch looks good based on reviews I've read. So I'm going to go with MonoTouch. My understanding is that I'll need a new Mac, but as it happens I also need a new PC for my .NET windows development. My question is should I (a) Purchase a Mac Book Pro and dual boot with Windows 7 (b) Purchase a Mac Pro and dual boot with Windows 7 (c) Purchase a good Dev PC and a slighlty less well spec'd Mac Book Pro or Mac Pro Bear in mind I'm only doing MonoTouch development with the Mac, most of my development (approx. 80% initially) will be done on the Windows side. My budget is approx. €3,000 / $4,000 and I'd like a good, fast development environment.It's purely for development so on the windows side installing SQL 2008/VS 2010/Office and on the OS X side installing MonoTouch. BTW - my budget excludes licensing for VS/MonoTouch/etc, I have a MonoTouch and MSDN license. Any opinions are greatly appreciated. I'm a newbie to Mac's !

    Hi, I have installed "Damn Small Linux" on my home computer for doing C development in unix. But the distribution doesn't by default come with the C development environment and I am facing some issues when trying to install the gcc. Is there any other small Linux distribution which by default has the required packages for the C development. And also I don't want additional software which takes up lot of space but still would like to have the graphical environment. Thanks
