  • Javascript: How to detect if a word is highlighted

    - by fterh
I'm writing a Firefox addon that is triggered whenever a word is highlighted. However I need a script that detects when a word is highlighted, and I'm stuck. An example would be nytimes.com (when you're reading an article and you highlight a word, the reference icon pops up). However the nytimes.com script is super complex. I'm 16 and not much of a programmer, so that is definitely way out of my league.

  • How much does it cost to develop an iphone application?

    - by delooks
How much can a developer charge for an iphone app like twitterrific. I want to know this because I need such an app with the same functionality for a new community website. I can do Ruby but have no experience with Objective C. So it would be interesting for me if I should start reading books about iPhone programming or outsource the work to a iPhone programmer.

  • What are real world examples of when Linked Lists should be used?

    - by oo
Another programmer was mentioning that they haven't found a use case for using a linked list data structure in any professional software in his career. I couldn't think of any good examples off the top of my head. He is mostly a C# and Java developer Can anyone give some examples where this was the correct data structure to solve a particular real world problem? Related: What is a practical, real world example of the Linked List?

  • Can a CSS class inherit one or more other classes?

    - by Joel Martinez
I feel dumb for having been a web programmer for so long and not knowing the answer to this question, I actually hope it's possible and I just didn't know about rather than what I think is the answer (which is that it's not possible). My question is whether it is possible to make a CSS class that "inherits" from another CSS class (or more than one). For example, say we had: .something { display:inline } .else { background:red } What I'd like to do is something like this: .composite { .something; .else } where the ".composite" class would both display inline and have a red background

  • In which situation is the c++/c# namespace approach better than the Java approach?

    - by mike g
The reason I ask this is that c# could easily have copied the java convention, or a variation of it, but opted for the more flexible approach of explicitly declaring namespaces inside files. As a Java programmer often there are things that I wish I could do differently, but namespaces is not one of them. The flexbility has a certain overhead (extra braces, extra decisions for developers, making it harder to view a projects contributions to the namespace, at least without a specialist IDE). So what practical examples are there when this flexiblity is advantageous?

  • Enter a TAB after every Xth character of text

    - by T. Schmidt
Hi, not necessarily a programmer question but I need to enter a TAB after every 84th character of a text. I'm trying to do it in InDesign but I don’t see an option for this. Is there a good application to do this? Preferably Mac OS X compatlible but Windows XP is fine too. Thank you very much!

  • Can java do a timer on command line?

    - by javaLearner.java
HI I am a new java programmer (very new). What I want to do/test is (not sure if its recommendable or doable?), we know that System.out.println("Message"); will output the "Message" in command prompt. Is it possible to display the current time, without having to repeatly use the system.out.println()? Name, like instead of displaying: 10:00:01 10:00:02 10:00:03 I wand to have liek this: 10:00:0X where X will continue counting

  • Several C# Language Questions

    - by Water Cooler v2
    1) What is int? Is it any different from the struct System.Int32? I understand that the former is a C# alias (typedef or #define equivalant) for the CLR type System.Int32. Is this understanding correct? 2) When we say: IComparable x = 10; Is that like saying: IComparable x = new System.Int32(); But we can't new a struct, right? or in C like syntax: struct System.In32 *x; x=>someThing = 10; 3) What is String with a capitalized S? I see in Reflector that it is the sealed String class, which, of course, is a reference type, unlike the System.Int32 above, which is a value type. What is string, with an uncapitalized s, though? Is that also the C# alias for this class? Why can I not see the alias definitions in Reflector? 4) Try to follow me down this subtle train of thought, if you please. We know that a storage location of a particular type can only access properties and members on its interface. That means: Person p = new Customer(); p.Name = "Water Cooler v2"; // legal because as Name is defined on Person. but // illegal without an explicit cast even though the backing // store is a Customer, the storage location is of type // Person, which doesn't support the member/method being // accessed/called. p.GetTotalValueOfOrdersMade(); Now, with that inference, consider this scenario: int i = 10; // obvious System.object defines no member to // store an integer value or any other value in. // So, my question really is, when the integer is // boxed, what is the *type* it is actually boxed to. // In other words, what is the type that forms the // backing store on the heap, for this operation? object x = i; Update Thank you for your answers, Eric Gunnerson and Aaronought. I'm afraid I haven't been able to articulate my questions well enough to attract very satisfying answers. The trouble is, I do know the answers to my questions on the surface, and I am, by no means, a newbie programmer. But I have to admit, a deeper understanding to the intricacies of how a language and its underlying platform/runtime handle storage of types has eluded me for as long as I've been a programmer, even though I write correct code.

  • At What point should you understand References?

    - by Vaccano
I asked a question like this in an interview for a entry level programmer: var instance1 = new myObject{Value = "hello"} var instance2 = instance1; instance1.Value = "bye"; Console.WriteLine(instance1.Value); Console.WriteLine(instance2.Value); The applicant responded with "hello", "bye" as the output. Some of my co-workers said that "pointers" are not that important anymore or that this question is not a real judge of ability. Are they right?

  • Graph generation on iPhone

    - by Parrots
Anyone have experience with drawing graphs on the iPhone? Looks like GraphKit isn't an option, so it's up to the programmer to either write his own library (using OpenGL, I guess), or an existing library. I can't seem to find any libraries that are confirmed to work on the iPhone. If you've written your own how did you go about it (opengl, quartz, etc), or if you used a library which one?

  • Does main() need to be in every script containing handlers?

    - by Will Merydith
Experienced Java programmer trying to learn Python. I have an applicaiton on Google App Engine and want to move my admin Handlers to a separate file. So now I have main.py and admin.py. I've set up app.yaml to route traffic properly, and have added the call to WSGIApplication() in each file to route to the appropriate Handler. My question is does each script file need def main() and the corresponding if statement: application = webapp.WSGIApplication([(r'/admin/(.*)', Admin)], debug=True) def main(): run_wsgi_app(application) if __name__ == '__main__': main()
