• Silverlight RIA Services - Showing columns from multiple tables

  Hello, I have been evaluating Silverlight and .NET RIA Services for my company. I am trying to decide if it is right for us. For the most part, I like it. But, I see one item that I am surprised that I cannot do easily. Because of this, I'm guessing I'm doing some thing wrong. To demonstrate, I have two database tables: Order ----- ID CustomerID OrderDate OrderNumber Customer -------- ID FirstName LastName Address When I create my Domain Service class, I select both of these tables. On the Silverlight application, I drag-and-drop the Order entity from the Data Sources page to my Silverlight page. When I do this, a DataGrid is added with all of the properties in the Order entity. In reality though, I would like the DataGrid to show: Order.OrderNumber Order.OrderDate Customer.FirstName Customer.LastName Because this information is spread across multiple tables, I'm not sure how to use RIA Services to show them in my Silverlight application. What is the recommended way to do this? Should I add a view in my database? Can I do it without touching the database? Thank you,

• Doing a POST to a Service Operation in ADO.NET data services

  Is it possible to POST to a service operation defined in an ADO.NET data service (it is decorated with WebInvoke)? I had no problem calling the service operation as an HTTP GET. However, when I switched to doing a POST, the stack trace consistently comes back with "Parameter cannot be NULL". I am using the jQuery syntax below, and sending the POST as JSON (though I'm not including the $.ajax call, the parameter names line up exactly). It would be possible to try this with WCF, as opposed to ADO.NET data services (newly renamed as WCF data services). However, my preference would be to use this approach first. I have tried this with and without the stringify method. Most examples online only show how to use a POST to entities (i.e. for handling CRUD operations). • MSI install sequence - run DB scripts before services start

  Folks, we're running into some sequencing troubles with our MSI install. As part of our app, we install a bunch of services and allow the user to pick whether to start them right away or later. When they start right away, they seem to start too early in the install sequence - before our database manager had a chance to update the database. Right now, our custom action to run the database updater looks like this - it's being run after "InstallFinalize" - very late in the process. <InstallExecuteSequence> <RemoveExistingProducts After='InstallInitialize' /> <Custom Action='RunDbUpdateManagerAction' After='InstallFinalize'> DbUpdateManager=3</Custom> </InstallExecuteSequence> What would be the more appropriate step to run after or before, to make sure the DB scripts are executed before any of the installed services start up? Is there a "BeforeServiceStart" step? EDIT: Just defining the "Before='StartServices'" attribute on the tag didn't solve my problem. I am assuming the issue is this: the custom action has an "inner text", which represents a condition, and this condition is: "&DbUpdateManager=3". From what I can deduce from trial & error, this probably means "the DbUpdateManager feature must be published". Now, trouble is: "PublishFeature" comes way at the end in the install sequence, just before "InstallFinalize", and definitely AFTER InstallServices / StartServices. So when I specify the "Before=StartServices" requirement, the condition "DbUpdateManager feature must be published" isn't true yet, so the DbUpdateManager doesn't get executed :-( I tried removing the condition - in that case, my DbUpdateManager sometimes doesn't execute at all, sometimes more than once - no real clear pattern as to what happens when..... Any more ideas?? Is there a way I could check for a condition "the DbUpdateManager feature is installed" which would be true after the "InstallFiles" step?? Marc

• Unable to access SQL reporting services on shared site with Themes enabled

  Hi, i am having some trouble with my IIS web server & SQL reporting services. At the current time my site is playing host to both reporting services (/reports & /reportserver) as well as my personal website (domain.com) Only just recently have i implemented a Theme on my site and as such i have placed a statement in my web.config file directing it to apply a certain theme in the following manner <pages styleSheetTheme="General"> Because of this when i try to access the report pages it failed telling me it couldnt find the Theme so what i did was locate the source files for the /reports & /reportserver directories and place the App_Theme folder in them hoping that would sort everything out. What i am getting now is the following error *Using themed css files requires a header control on the page. e.g. head runat="server" * Does anyone know how i can get around this? Do i have to hack the sql reporting aspx pages? Please note i do NOT want to remove the web.config declaration.

• grails services :: multiple projects

  PROBLEM : I have multiple grails projects (lets say appA, appB and appC) : services to be precise I want to run them in a single grails-app.. probably a war deployment, how can i do this? REQUIREMENTS : I want this to be a single app since i am deploying it on cloud and i don't have enough memory to hold all these service instances individually. The reason for multiple grails project is scalability. So that if later on i want to run 10 instance of appA, 3 instance of appB, and 1 instance of aapC; i should be able to do that. EDIT : Can i use something like 0mq, will that be helpful in keeping the services separated from each other. How will i package my service? And reading the docs of 0mq seems that it can work with both inprocess and external process. Will async grails requests on HTTP work with 0mq in process/ external mq calls. Haven't used 0mq, but from the initial doc it seems to work. Need some experience calls in this scenario. Are there any other alternatives or mq alternatives?

• What's New in Oracle's EPM System?

  Oracle’s EPM System R11.1.2.2  is now generally available to customers and partners on the download center.  Although the release number doesn’t sound significant, this is a major release of Oracle’s Hyperion EPM Suite with new modules as well as significant enhancements across the suite.  This release was announced back on April 4th as part of Oracle’s Business Analytics Strategy launch, so analytics is a key aspect of the release.  But the three biggest pieces of news in this release are Oracle Hyperion Planning support for the Exalytics In-Memory Machine, the new Project Financial Planning Application and the new Account Reconciliations Manager module. The Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine was announced back in October 2011, at Oracle OpenWorld.  It’s the latest installment from Oracle in a line of engineered systems that combine Oracle Sun hardware, with Oracle database and application technologies – in solutions that are designed to provide high scalability and performance for specific tasks.  Exalytics is the first engineered system specifically designed for high performance analytics.  Running in-memory versions of Oracle Essbase, as well as the Oracle TimesTen database and Oracle BI tools, Exalytics provides speed of thought response times for complex analytic processes with advanced visualizations.  Early adopter customers have achieved 5X to 100X faster interactivity and 6X to 10X faster planning cycles.  Hyperion Planning running with Oracle Exalytics will support enterprise-wide planning, budgeting and forecasting with more detailed data, with hundreds to thousands of users across an organization getting speed of thought performance. The new Hyperion Project Financial Planning application delivered with EPM 11.1.2.2 is also great news for Oracle customers.  This application follows on the heels of other special-purpose planning applications that Oracle has delivered for Workforce and Capital Asset planning.  It allows Project Managers to identify project-related expenses and revenues, plan and propose new projects, and track results over time. Finance Managers can evaluate and compare different projects, manage the funding process, monitor and report the actual financial results and impacts of projects and project portfolios. This new application is applicable to capital projects, contract projects and indirect projects like IT and HR projects across all industries.  This application is a great complement to existing Project Management applications, and helps bridge the gap between these applications, and the financial planning and budgeting process. Account reconciliations has to be one of the biggest bottlenecks and risks in the financial close and reporting process, and many organizations rely on spreadsheets and manual processes to perform this critical process.  To help address this problem, Oracle developed an Account Reconciliation Manager module that is being delivered as part of Oracle Hyperion Financial Close Management.   This module helps automate and streamline account reconciliations and eliminates the chances for errors, omissions and fraud.  But unlike standalone account reconciliation packages, it’s integrated with the rest of the Oracle Hyperion Financial Close suite, and can integrate balances from any source system.  This can help alleviate a major bottleneck in the financial close process, increase accuracy and reduce risk, and can complement existing investments in Hyperion Financial Management, as well as Oracle and non-Oracle transaction processing systems. • Challenges in Corporate Reporting - New Independent Research

  Earlier this year, Oracle and Accenture sponsored a global study on trends in financial close and reporting. We surveyed 1,123 finance professionals in large organizations in 12 countries around the world during February and March. Financial Consolidation and Reporting is the most mature aspect of Enterprise Performance Management with mainstream solutions having been around for over 30 years. But of course over this time there have been many changes and very significant increases in regulation. So just what is the current state is Financial Consolidation and Reporting in our major corporations across the world? We commissioned this independent research to find out. Highlights of the result are: •          Seeking change: Businesses recognize they need to invest in financial reporting to address the challenges they currently face. 47 percent of companies have made substantial investments over the last year to the financial close, filing, and reporting processes. •          Ineffective investments: Despite these investments, spreadsheets (72 percent) and e-mails (68 percent) are still being used daily to track and manage reporting, suggesting that new investments are falling short of expectations. •          Increased costs and uncertainty: The situation is so opaque that managers across the finance function are unable to fully understand the financial impact or cost implications of reporting, with 60 percent of respondents admitting they did not know the total cost of managing and publicizing their financial results. •          Persistent challenges: 68 percent of respondents admitted that they have inadequate visibility into reporting processes, while 84 percent of finance managers surveyed said they find it difficult to control the quality of financial data across the entire reporting process. •          Decreased effectiveness: 71 percent of finance managers feel their effectiveness is limited in some way by data-analysis–related issues, while 39 percent of C-level or VP-level respondents say their effectiveness is impaired by limited visibility. •          Missed deadlines: Due to late changes to the chart of accounts, 15 percent of global businesses have missed statutory filings, putting their companies at risk of financial penalties and potentially impacting share value. The report makes it clear that investments made to date by these large organizations around the world have been uneven across the close, reporting, and filing processes, which has led to the challenges these organizations currently face in the overall process. Regardless of whether companies are using a variety of solutions or a single solution, the report shows they continue to witness increased costs, ineffectual data management, and missed reporting, which—in extreme circumstances—can impact a company’s corporate image and share value. The good news is that businesses realize that these problems persist and 86 percent of companies are likely to make a significant investment during the next five years to address these issues. While they should invest, it is critical that they direct investments correctly to address the key issues this research identified: •          Improving data integrity •          Optimizing processes •          Integrating the extended financial close process By addressing these issues and with clear guidance on how to implement the correct business processes, infrastructure, and software solutions, finance teams will find that their reporting processes are much more effective, cost-efficient, and aligned with their performance expectations. • Word 2007 crashes on Server 2008 R2 terminal services

  We are finding that Word 2007 (with SP2) crashes when used on a Windows 2008 R2 terminal server. Typically it crashes when you click File/Open or File/Save, but not every time. Maybe one time in four, and just to be really confusing, on a test server in my office I can't make it crash. I have just today set up a brand new shiny 2k8 R2 terminal server with as simple a setup as possible, e.g. no anti-virus to confuse things, and we're still seeing crashes. My question is has anyone else seen this, and if so any clues on what's happening? We have a support case open with Microsoft, and the MS support engineer has conceded it's happening, but has so far been unable to find the reason. On possible factor is that all the 2k8 R2 terminal servers I've seen this on have been Hyper-V VMs (running on a 2k8 R2 host). I'm about to put in a physical 2k8 R2 terminal server at the customer where we're seeing the most crashes, in case this is relevant. More news soon. Sorry if this posting seems a bit vague, but this has just bitten us and is causing a lot of pain and sleepless nights :-( If anyone can help I'll be enormously grateful! Update: we've given up and gone back to 2008 pre-R2. Both Office 2003 and 2007 both work fine now. I think there are some problems with TS in R2. Googling doesn't find much, so I thought it was just me. It's reassuring to find that someone else has seen the same problem.

• Terminal Services printing

  Hi We are using a hosted terminal server to run some applications on. We have three users who connect to the server through RDP and try to print to a networked printer called: HP Photosmart C7280. One of the users is using Windows XP Pro 32-bit on the host and when they print through the terminal server it works fine. Another one of the users is using Vista 32-bit on the host and when they print through the terminal server it works fine. The third user is using Windows 7 64-bit on the host and when they print through the terminal server it only print the first line of the page (A test page print 3/4s of the test page compared to printing all of the page when using the other 2 machines). We are only printing from Word 2007 and Excel 2007 on all machines. The server is Windows 2003. No errors in the event log. Any ideas?

• Active Directory - Lightweight Directory Services and Domain Password Policy

  Greetings all, We have an active directory domain which enforces a strict password policy. Hooray! Now, for the project we are working on, we are going to be storing users of our website Microsoft's AD-LDS service as well as using that for authentication of our web users. By default, it is my understanding that AD-LDS inherits its password policy from the domain of the machine it's installed on. Is there any way to break that link such that we can define a lighter password policy (or none if we so choose) for users in AD-LDS without affecting our domain? Note: AD-LDS is going to be hosted on a machine which is part of the domain. Thanks in advance.

• Windows Server 2008 x86 Services for Unix SDK (SUA) RSH

  Running RSH commands on a Windows box against a Linux box works only for the administrator user. Is there a file somewhere that has a list of users that can run commands remotely? More Info The server configuration is automated by VMware's product... There's no /etc/hosts.equiv file setup but there is a /root/.rhosts file with an entry of [IP ADDRESS] +. The SUA client C:\Windows\SUA\bin\rsh can login when run as the local administrator account but no other user can login. The error is: rcmd: unknown user: [username]. The command I'm trying to run is: rsh -l root [IP ADDRESS] ls.

  We have had Nagios running on one of our servers with out any problems for a while but lately certain old service warning have been reappearing and then disappearing on the service detail page. From looking at the logs I found warning like the following. Warning: The check of service 'Tomcat' on host 'virtual1' looks like it was orphaned (results never came back). I'm scheduling an immediate check of the service... Has anyone ever came across this before or at least know a way to delete the old Orphaned Warnings. The Nagios Version we are running is Version 3.0b7 so an update might be in order. Thanks.

• Active Directory Domain Services - Network Name Cannot be Found

  I have really weird problem that I could not explain. I am trying to redirect all users home folder to the new server. I have copied all the files including the permissions to the new server. All I need to do is to update the user profile for home folder by changing the server name. However, I got this message when I enter the new server name: My server that serving as AD can resolve the name by ping and nslookup of the server name. The only thing that I don't understand why the MMC cannot resolve the name. I did change with the IP Address and I still get the same error message. Thank you so much for your help. UPDATE: I know what seems to be a problem, but I don't know how to fix it. The new server that will serve all Home folder is actually sitting in the cloud with different IP Address as the Domain Controller. The Domain Controller is sitting locally in the office with 10.0.0.0/24 IP Addresses. The new server that is sitting in on Data Centre is on 172.10.10.10/24 IP Addresses. The static route has been set up on both end, and the DNS as well. I believe this is the issue. Does anyone how to overcome this situation? Thank you.

  Situation: I want to tunnel SSH sessions through HTTPS. I have a very restrictive firewall/proxy which only allows HTTP, FTP and HTTPS traffic. What works: Setting up a tunnel through the proxy to a remote linux box that has a sshd listening at port 443 The problem: I have to have a web server (lighty) running at port 443. HTTPS traffic to other ports is forbidden by the proxy. Ideas so far: Set up a virtual host and proxy all incoming requests to localhost: (e.g. 22) $HTTP["host"] == "tunnel.mylinux.box" { proxy.server = ( "" => (("host" => "127.0.0.1", "port" => 22)) ) } Unfortunately this won't work. Am i doing something wrong, or is there a reason, that this won't work?

  I wrote three service units, say a.service b.service and c.service. C requires and runs after b, b requires and runs after a, so when I execute "systemctl start c.service", all three of them will be launched one by one. But when I want to stop all of them, I have to execute "systemctl stop a.service b.service c.service". Is there any other way to stop all of them with less typing? I know with "Bindto=" I can use "systemctl stop a.service" to stop all of them, but what if I got c Bindto a and b, while a and b have no required relationship to each other?

  When I use the new remote desktop with ssl and try to log on with bad credentials it logs a 4625 event as expected. The problem is, it doesn't log the ip address, so I can't block malicious logons in our firewall. You will see this if you go to google maps and your browser may ask if you would like to share location data. I am wondering if there is any way to disable this on a system wide setting rather than just in each browser (Chrome can do this too).   I am trying to reference my .asmx webservices in .NET but my server is not exposed to the internet. When I put on the following address I get the message mentioned below. What's the reason for not being able to see the directory? Am I missing something in my IIS configuraction? Am I missing anything in my permissions? Just as reference I have other folders with webservices and I have the same issue. When I login to the server I am doing it with my windows user and password (I am using windows authentication).   Hi! I've managed to install pnp4nagios 0.6.3 and I'm a bit confused about how pnp4nagios generates graphics. Almost out of the box, it started graphs for ping and some http servers (not all of them). But, how can I make it graph things like disk utilization (When that value comes from SNMP)?? For example, ls /usr/local/pnp4nagios/var/perfdata/isis/ Cola_de_Mail.rrd Cola_de_Mail.xml HTTP.rrd HTTP.xml PING.rrd PING.xml Those are checks running on the host isis, but there are many other checks for that server that are not taken into account by pnp4nagios. How can I make pnp4nagios "see" the other checks?? Thanks!
