• Slow upload to Server 2008 DC, Downloads work as expected

  I have a Windows Server 2008 Domain Controller that I run as a do-it-all server. It has a GbE connection to the network and to every machine on the network. Downloads from the server file shares work as expected, between 70MB/s and 80MB/s to all the machines. However, when I try to copy files back up to the server, speeds fall to 7MB/s-10MB/s. I've disabled flow control and large send offload properties on all the NICs. I had this problem before and managed to fix it through some properties changes, but like an idiot, I never documented my fix and have since moved to a new server. Any ideas what I need to do to get the speeds to be more symmetric? EDIT: Remote differential compression is also disabled.

• Unknown problem causing major computer failure, Booting problem with windows 7, mainly with 0x0000000A

  Where do I begin? OS=Windows 7 I think it all started when I ran an installation file. I suspect it may have been a virus (even though AVG scan didnt pick anything up). The installation failed, computer crashed then restarted. In the middle of the reboot, I get BSOD. Normal boot up doesnt work so I use safe mode. Method 1: Not a problem I thought cos I will do what I normally do and that was to recover from my image file. Unfortunately, my Acronis software cant recover in safe mode. Method 2: I created a bootable disc for the Acronis recovery software. Managed to boot to Acronis and started the recovery from image file. This fail with some error message (did not manage to record). Something to do with not be able to copy to $AVG folder. Method 3: At this stage, assumed it was still a virus causing the problem so decided to format that partition to remove everything and hopefully the virus too. Had a lot of problems trying to bypass the system to allow me to format but (i think- more on this later) I managed to do that. Image was recovered, thought problem was resolved. Tried to boot windows but new error: Boot Manager is missing. Read up on this and managed to copy the Boot Manager from my Laptop's Manufacturer's partition (partition contains factory setup image file). Windows loaded but new BSOD with 0x000000A problem. Method 4: Attempted to reinstall factory settings but this failed cos i suspect by formating the partition, I may have removed the recovery software. Tried to create a bootable dvd of factory setting but machine is so bad it continues to crash. Bootable dvd method failed. Method 5:Spent alot of time reading up on this error, even installed a software to help scan and fix the problem. Scan failed and software required money! Anyway, lots of BSOD with different error message like 0x00000001A and 0x0000000D1. Error message changes with some reboots. Method 6: Found a hotfix from the windows site to fix 0x0000000A problem, great I thought! In safe mode, I cant install the file cos of error:0x8007043c. Tried to then install the fix in normal mode but installation just hangs. Returned to safe mode and followed advice to bypass 0x8007043c by changing the BITS status (read here: http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windowsupdate/181931-error-number-0x8007043c-windows-update.html). However, my machine at this time is so flaky that it hangs everytime i right mouse click the computer icon. I am at my wits end. Ya help or ideas? Cheers

• Why does my excel document have 960,000 empty rows?

  I have an excel document, Office 2007, on a Windows 7 machine (if that part matters any, I'm not sure but just throwing it out there). It is a list of all employee phone numbers. If I need to generate a new page, I can click on page 2 and the table will automatically generate again. The problem is, someone messed it up since it's on a network drive and now shows I have over 960,000 rows of data, when I really don't! I did CTRL+END to see if any data was in the last cell, so I cleared it out, deleted that row and column, but still didn't fix it. It almost seems like it duplicates itself after the deletion. How can I fix this instead of recreating the entire document?

  I am installing Fedora 16. I just insert CD to install Fedora 16 in my laptop however, I am getting this error like "dracut Warning: Can't mount root filesystem." http://cfile7.uf.tistory.com/image/176BAA3C4EBF9F89051FA7 <--- like this I am not really sure how to fix it. (this is the first time to install Fedora 16 in my laptop) In my laptop , I previously installed Windows 7 Professional. I have not install any kind of Linux before. • IPV6 causing issue with DNS

  I have set up an 'internal' DNS at my work, basically we have ourdomain.com that is for internet, email etc and I have created on one of our linux network servers (debian) a DNS using bind9 with the domain ourdomain.inc. So based on my files below and the symptoms I'm describing; what effect could IPV6 be having on my setup? What can I do to fix this? I assume it is not actually the IPV6 causing the issue, but rather something in my setup. More the most part this seems to work, I can ping svn.ourdomain.inc and it resolves to the correct IP, I can also ping google.com and it also resolves no problem. So all seem good. However, periodically (couple of times a day at least), I loose the ability to ping the svn.domain.inc (and all others defined under the internal DNS). What seem to fix the issue temporarily is to disable IPV6 on the network adapter of the client machine and then re-enable it. Then it works for a bit but will always fail again. • Explorer image thumbnails are grey/incomplete/partial

  I have recently noticed a problem on my Win7 x64 Home machine. When navigating the pictures library, I run across a fair amount of thumbnails that are grey and only partially rendered. This is not not the absence of thumbnails caused by "always show icons, never thumbnails" checkbox, and is a local drive, have seen many other posts for those issues... I've run cleanmgr for thumbnails, and also manually deleted the .db files from %LOCALAPPADAT%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer. That did actually fix one thumbnail once (while preparing this post) but in general it doesn't work. Why do specialized imaging programs not have this problem, but Explorer does? How do you fix Explorer? It's very annoying!

• WiFi can't connect after suspend

  I've had this problem since Ubuntu 11.10 (my first install) but I was able to get around this issue with this answer. After I installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 I tried to use the same fix as before but I couldn't get it to work. I've also tried a couple other different fixes I found around the web but they didn't work. Basically here's what happens: I can see all the networks in my area. When I try to connect to one of them it never connects, it keeps disconnecting. After a little bit it asks for the password again but its already filled in correctly. If I hit okay it will do the exact same thing again. So does anyone know how I can get this fixed? • Can't find windows 2000 domain after PDC Change

  This is a windows 2000 domain issue. I had an old win2000 PDC that was beginning to fail. So, trying to be pre-emptive, I installed a new BDC, then "demoted" the old PDC and took it off the network. Now it appears that no member server can "find" the domain anymore. No logins work (for services or a RDP or anything). What I've tried (based on googling): Verified sysvol is shared on all servers. Used nslookup to verify that DC's are being found. netdiag /fix meta data cleanup routines. verified no firewall issues (port 389 etc) seizing all roles to new PDC (I did that as part of the original promotion). LMHOST file and Netbios settings. At the moment it seems like I can get the DC's returned but cannot contact them. I'm at a loss. My latest attempt was to remove a member server from the domain and try to "re-add" it. When I do that I get this message: The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.cfwebtools.com The following domain controllers were identified by the query: db-dev1.cfwebtools.com file-prod1.cfwebtools.com cfwt-pdc2.cfwebtools.com However no domain controllers could be contacted. It then goes on to ask if I've checked my A record and made sure they are running. Is there a way to force this domain to be seen? I also shared sysvol (or double checked it) and restarted the dfsr service. More information. I got looking at sysvol and found it was not shared on 2 of these servers. Only one of them (db-dev1) has a "good" or at least "populated" sys vol store. So I tried doing a "d2" recovery of my PDC against that good sysvol. But it never synchs - or at least it does not seem to synch. I'm guessing if I could get sysvol and netlogin to kick in and replicate that would fix my issue. I think these DC's aren't responding because they are waiting for replication which is broken somehow. Would taking down all the DC's except for db-dev1 fix the issue - at least temporarily? I know I can't just copy the sysvol stuff over to the other 2 can I?

• Why won't my graphics work in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

  I'm very new to Ubuntu and to Linux in general, and took the leap and formatted my PC to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS very recently :) I seem to be having some trouble getting my graphics card to run properly, I looked over what information I could find but I still cannot get it up and running and figured this was a good place to ask for help. The information I can find on my graphics is as follows: (Terminal command) lspci outputs: 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4225/4250] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x301) OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.1 Mesa 9.0.3) What am I doing wrong here? All help appreciated ;) Edit: I have tried the legacy driver from www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13-4-linux-x86.x86_64.zip I also tried the guide at https://launchpad.net/~makson96/+archive/fglrx which caused the system to crash (blackscreen, no boot) Neither seemed to work. I did however reinstall ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and re-tried both with no success. Reintalling ubuntu did however fix the broken dependencies problems, etc.

• MS Word 2007 Mail Merge fails on ZIP codes with leading Zeros (eg. 01234)

  I have an Excel Spreadsheet with a ZIP code column. For some dumb reason the original spreadsheet I got had all the zip codes stored as numbers, so a ZIP code like 01234 was stored as 1234. Easy to fix with "Format Column" as "Special = ZIP Code". All values like 1234, show up as 01234. Great! When I import it into Word via Mail Merge (to print address labels), the ZIP codes on all the addresses starting with a leading zero (like 01234) revert to their old form (1234). How do I fix this?

• Text on Cisco ASA console is garbled/missing letters

  I've actually looked up a number of solutions for this problem and none of them work. There's this Cisco ASA 5505 that I'd like to use, that outputs mildly garbled text with missing characters. I did some googling and found that the most likely problem is a bad baud rate, so I tried all the baud rates, 7N1, 8N2... basically every possibility minicom had. Then I figured (since I can type ok, just not read) that if I factory reset it that it would fix whatever is set wrong with the terminal. That didn't work either. This usb-db9 adapter and console cable work fine on the catalyst switch in our office. My serial settings are 9600 8N1 with no flow control. Anyone know how to fix this? • How to I create a table of contents in a Word document that has a mind of it's own?

  I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm struggling to get a table of contents going in a Word doc that's already been created. I know enough to understand that the TOC is based on the type of the header/style and indentation. My approach so far has been to auto-generate the TOC and then try (unsuccessfully) to fix the problems; perhaps this isn't the best approach in this situation. What's happening is that the TOC is missing half my sections and for others it's adding way too much detail. Again my sense is I have to "fix" individual section headings but I haven't been successful so far.

• hd0 out of disk error results to low graphics mode

  Yesterday, I have reinstalled Ubuntu due to a error: hd0 out of disk on boot. Everything went fine, I've installed apps, perform updates and upgraded the kernel. I've even restarted it a few times just to check if I would encounter boot issues and was glad that everything was working perfectly, then powered it down. The next morning when I boot, I got this error: hd0 out of disk error. Press any key to continue... again! After pressing a key, it took 10 minutes for the Ubuntu logo to appear with it's 5 dots. After another 5 minutes, Ubuntu started checking the disk and displayed a message that / has errors, I pressed F to fix the errors. After which Ubuntu tells me that /tmp is not yet ready for mounting so I pressed S to skip mounting it, then Ubuntu restarted. On boot I saw the error: hd0 out of disk error. Press any key to continue... again. This time it took only a minute for the Ubuntu logo to appear and after another minute a dialog box appeared with the following message: The system is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input settings could not be detected correctly. You will have to configure these yourself. What would you like to do? Run in low-graphics mode for just one session Reconfigure graphics Troubleshoot the error Exit to console login Whichever option I choose I ended up with a console prompt: grub-editenv: error: cannot read the file /boot/grub/grubenv. _ I can't do anything on this console, whatever I type nothing happens. I've rebooted several times and I get same error every time. I don't quite understand what is wrong with Ubuntu or with my installation. I've encountered this hd0 out of disk error several times already and always ended up reinstalling. I'd really really appreciate it if you guys can help me fix this. Thank you and good day.

• Depending on fixed version of a library and ignore its updates

  I was talking to a technical boss yesterday. Its about a project in C++ that depends on opencv and he wanted to include a specific opencv version into the svn and keep using this version ignoring any updates which I disagreed with.We had a heated discussion about that. His arguments: Everything has to be delivered into one package and we can't ask the client to install external libraries. We depend on a fixed version so that new updates of opencv won't screw our code. We can't guarantee that within a version update, ex from 3.2.buildx to 3.2.buildy. Buildy the function signatures won't change. My arguments: True everything has to be delivered to the client as one package,but that's what build scripts are for. They download the external libraries and create a bundle. Within updates of the same version 3.2.buildx to 3.2.buildy its impossible that a signature change, unless it is a really crappy framework, which isn't the case with opencv. We deprive ourselves from new updates and features of that library. If there's a bug in the version we took, and even if there's a bug fix later, we won't be able to get that fix. Its simply ineffiecient and anti design to depend on a certain version/build of an external library as it makes our project difficult in the future to adopt to new changes. So I'd like to know what you guys think. Does it really make sense to include a specific version of external library in our svn and keep using it ignoring all updates?

• Can't connect to Internet through WiFi, but can with cable

  I'm using Windows 7 32-bit, Toshiba Portege laptop. I want to connect to the WiFi, usually I can do that easily. But, I don't know.. maybe when I tried to install a Microsoft Research: Mesh Virtual WiFi that could connect more than 2 wireless networks. I wanna try in connecting both Wireless router and my personal Ad-Hoc. Now, my laptop don't recognize my WiFi, well, I can connect to the WiFi but it says: "Limited access" and doesn't really connect to the internet. But when I plug the LAN cable, it works. I know the problem is in the laptop's wireless connection or in the properties. Any help for this? UPDATE: The IP and DNS settings, I set to automatic, and when I ran diagnostic, Windows tells me that the wireless network adapter is the problem, but they told me to insert the LAN cable, so how to fix the wireless? They didn't tell me how to fix that.

• I cannot boot Ubuntu from WUBI install with windows 7, get an error message every time

  i have tried several times to install ubuntu using wubi, i can't use a disc as i have a notebook computer and there is no optical drive. the download and installation all seem to work well but whenever i try to boot ubuntu at the windows 7/ubuntu menu it comes up with this error screen. I have used both the C: drive and the D: drive to install Ubuntu several times each, it's always unsuccessful. "Windows has failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer Choose your language settings and then click 'next' Click repair your computer. If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File: \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr Status: 0xc000000F Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt." I use an ASUS x501a with windows 7. What do i do to fix this? I want to be able to dual boot Windows 7 and ubuntu. Thanks a lot :)

  I've been running Jaunty with Apache2, PHP & MySQL running drupal websites as well as python 2.6 and trac on the same server. I'm getting quite a few segmentation faults and suhosin warnings on my drupal websites which don't seem to be related to the amount of RAM the server has (3GB) as the trac site is running happily without issues. The issue seems to be related to PHP accessing mysql and I'm getting suhosin warnings. Has anyone else seen this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it? Funnily enough, it's not a consistent error, as restarts tend to fix the issue temporarily.

• 1360x768x32 Resolution in Windows 8 in VirtualBox

  My Lenovo ThinkPad's built-in screen maxes at 1366x768x32. I wanted to use that same resolution with Windows 8 Developer Preview inside of VirtualBox. So, what did I do? Downloaded the latest build of VirtualBox v4.1.6 (because it supports Windows 8 x64) Installed Windows 8 Developer Preview in VirtualBox as I did earlier this year. Installed Guest Additions. Ran the CustomVideoMode described in this blog post. …and quickly found out that I didn’t have the option to use 1366x768x32 inside of VirtualBox despite using the following command: VBoxManage.exe setextradata  "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1920x1080x32   So how do you fix it? If you do a little research on this resolution, then you will find it is a non-standard resolution. Even if you run the command: VBoxManage.exe setextradata "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1366x768x32 It will still not show that resolution inside of VirtualBox. You can fix this easily by using the following command as shown below: VBoxManage.exe setextradata "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1360x768x32 I hope that you noticed the command used the resolution of 1360 instead of 1366. Now if you go to your display option for Windows 8 inside of Virtualbox then you can select that resolution. Anyways, I hope this helps someone with a similar problem. • ATI driver in Fedora linux 11

  I recently built a pc with an ATI Radeon HD 5750. I have installed Fedora 11 and installed the device driver for the Radeon 5700 series proprietary drivers. I wanted to see if there is graphics hardware acceleration. I typed in glxinfo at the terminal and I got: X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation) Major opcode of failed request: 135 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString) Serial number of failed request: 14 Current serial number in output stream: 14 I don't know how to fix this. I tried to go to the ATI Catalyst Control Center; that worked, but the ATI Catalyst Control Center (Administrator) doesn't work. If anyone knows how to fix this problem then please let me know. • Whats a good host for an active vBulletin site?

  I've been switching hosts using a VPS each time and I'm just really not sure I'm finding the right VPS's. I've used a VPS from burst.net & rubyringtech and I just feel like it's slowly killing my site because of the slow speed. I really don't know if it's the network or the VPS itself but I really wish to fix this. When I TOP into the VPS peak times it shows this: top - 03:18:56 up 16:33, 1 user, load average: 1.33, 1.40, 1.33 Tasks: 30 total, 1 running, 29 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 27.2%us, 13.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 59.2%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 1048576k total, 679712k used, 368864k free, 0k buffers Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached And pages take atleast a good 2-3 minutes to load. I have only like 50-60 members on the forum also. I had a shared hosting account and the forum was lightning fast.... Is a VPS a bad idea? :\ What should I do to fix this? I'm running lighttpd with xcache, and the latest mysql + php version. The server is a intel i7 2600 w/ 1gb uplink (I think the 1gb uplink is a lie because I've tested the network and the highest download speed I've seen was 20mb/s from a code.google page) All in all I've seen people talking about linode. Should I try them? I honestly don't need a dedicated server yet it's only 50-70 members online. What should I do? I really want a VPS because I enjoy root access. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• menu not showing in apps when maximized 12.10

  I have removed the Global App Menu as I prefer to have the minimize, maximize, close buttons on the right side of each app. I did this with no problem in 12.04. I did an upgrade to 12.10 and noticed that Chrome, Chromium and Firefox all use the Global Menu. I have done the following: sudo apt-get autoremove appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt I have disabled the Firefox extension. I removed the corresponding Firefox package but still only have a global menu. I tried Gconf but apparently that does not work in 12.10. I then tried Dconf and found this fix on Google: org gnome desktop wm preferences, look for "button_layout" on the right panel. Here is the problem, after desktop, I do not have wm. I reset Unity and got a message saying something about wm is missing. I rebooted and opened Chrome and still no fix. I then clicked maximize and once Chrome was not maximized anymore, the minimize, maximize, close buttons show up in Chrome. Same with Firefox! Any ideas? I am truly stumped. Firefox and Chrome work fine in KDE Plasma and Gnome when maximized.

• Can not join comp to the domain... greyed out

  I have an old WinXP Pro SP3 computer I need to join to the domain, simple right? not really. When I go to control panel - system - computer name and click on CHANGE ("rename this computer") everything is greyed out. I can not set it from workgroup to a domain. I am logged on locally as an admin. (Builtin account and one I created) I have checked local policy (gpedit.msc) on the comp, but it feels like a needle in the haystack. I could probably reload an image faster than trying to fix this...but I am curious so I post here to see if anyone knows of it/fix. I tried reseting the policy to defaults, but no luck: secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose EDIT:
