  • lubuntu issues with desktop directory

    My lubuntu 12.04 is upgraded from the 11.10 version and I'm a Chinese user. What surprises me is that the directory shown on the initial screen is always changing! recently It seems to be mapped with the directory called w in my home directory(~). However when using pcmanfm to open the directory it usually shows odd string as to the name of the folder that cannot be print, which I think may be some Chinese characters.The directory also sometimes fails to appear in the window appeared first when logged in. I know the lxde has no conception of the shown folder and I think the lubuntu team has done some optimization. Can someone tell me what's happening?Thanks in advance.

  • programm and user data from an old hdd to a new installation on ssd

    i tried everything since days, now i ask. i got a ubuntu system on my old hdd, wich is connectet via usb to this system and a sdd is build in my notebook. at the moment i am running a ubuntusystem from an usb stick. it have tried to clone my disk(cahnge uiid, etc), to transport the data via deja dup and much more. the result was nothing or strange things. my idea is to copy the important data form the old system to the new(home and whatever), but it is not allowed to do this. somebody her who know a tool wich can do this, or got an an other idea.

  • Why can't i ping server? VMware set to 'Bridged' loses IP address on 10.04.

    I have installed a fresh 10.04 server onto a laptop on a home network as a VMware machine and set network connection to 'Bridged: connect directly to the physical network' from within VMware and rebooted the server. It then loses its IP address. 'dhclient eth0' says "No working leases in persistent database - sleeping" DHCP is working fine on the wi-fi router. The laptop is wired to a wireless router and from there wirelessly to a desktop. Desktop and Laptop can ping each other from Windows. I can ping the VM from Windows on the same laptop, but not from the desktop. Strangely ping has started to resolve hostnames to IPv6 addresses and not IPv4. Don't know whether that's connected? A kick in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I've been an Ubuntu desktkop user for a few years, but new to ubuntu servers.

  • Automatically locking screen without shutting it off

    Hey everyone— I have a home theater PC running Ubuntu 11.10, outputting over HDMI (for audio and video). I'm having an issue: I'd like the screen to lock automatically (when video is not playing, of course) but do not want the screen to turn off automatically, because that kills audio. I can manually lock the screen, of course, but it appears that if you set the "Turn off screen" setting to "never", the screen will never lock, no matter what the "lock screen" timeout is set to. Is there a way to do what I'm asking, or will I have to install xscreensaver?

I want something that is true in only one case. I'm asking this because I want users of my library to be able to use my library for free in dev fabric. Hence manually putting seperate identifier or flag in config file and keeping two configs for dev and deploy is not feasible.

  • Visual Studio 2008/2010 & SQL Server 2008 on Windows 7 Home Premium

    Are there any limitations with respect to developing ASP.NET and WPF apps using VS 2008/2010 and SQL Server 2008 on Windows 7 Home Premium? I know you can run IIS 7.5 on Home Premium. I Googled and Binged on Home Premium and VS/SQL Server and couldn't find much. It doesn't look like the features missing from Home Premium, domain joining, xp mode, etc... shouldn't prevent one from running and developing in VS/SQL Server. Update I did discover one limitation w/IIS 7.5 and it applies to all versions of Windows 7 I think. You can't create your own self signed SSL certificate specifying a name other than the machine name. You're stuck with your machine name which isn't that big a deal, but it is a change from previous versions.

  • Apache 13 permission denied in user's home directory

    Hi, My friend's website was working fine until he moved the document root from /var/www/xxx to /home/user/xxx Apache give 13 permission denied error messages when we try to access the site via a web browser. The site is configured as a virtual directory. All the Apache configurations were unchanged (except for the directory change). We tried to chmod 777 /home/user/xxx, chown apache /home/user/xxx. But they didn't work. Is there some kind of security feature set on the user's home directories? The server OS is CentOS (Godaddy VPS). Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

    I'm trying out ASP.NET MVC, but, after reading a huge tutorial, I'm slightly confused. I understand how Controllers have Actions that URLs are routed to, but how do home pages work? Is the home page its own controller (e.g. "Home") that has no actions? This sounds correct, but how is it functionality implemented without Actions (no Actions means no methods that call the View Engine)? In other words, my question is this: how are home pages implemented (in terms of Controllers and Views)? Could you please provide sample code?

  • Syncing magento database froms development to production

    I use git for version control. I have a development, staging and production environment. When I finish in development I push to staging for review by the client. When approved, I push changes from staging to production. That works fine as long as there is no database changes. What happens if I install modules via Magento connect on local development and it makes database modifications. How would I push those changes up to the production server since the production server is always changing? Edit: I wrote two shell scripts. One that pulls the production database down to my development server, replaces base url with develpment url and updates my development db accordingly. It also leaves the production sql dump behind to be added to my git repo. I'm not really sure if it's beneficial to keep the raw dumps in source control but I'm going to try it out. The second scripts moves the development database up to staging and essentially performs the same operations as the first. Now when it comes time to move to production I pull the updated production repo into the production server and allow magento to do it's thing. I also started using SQLYog recently and it has a database comparison wizard which will give me the differences in my development and production databases and allow me to merge the changes in selectively. It always creates a migration script that I added to source control as well. If anything goes wrong I can run the comparison to see if anything was missed. Does this sounds like a decent workflow to you guys?

AFAIK, root home directory is /root. Is it OK to create some files/folders in this directory, in the case my program is running by root user?

  • Clang warning flags for Objective-C development

    As a C & Objective-C programmer, I'm a bit paranoid with the compiler warning flags. I usually try to find a complete list of warning flags for the compiler I use, and turn most of them on, unless I have a really good reason not to turn it on. I personally think this may actually improve coding skills, as well as potential code portability, prevent some issues, as it forces you to be aware of every little detail, potential implementation and architecture issues, and so on... It's also in my opinion a good every day learning tool, even if you're an experienced programmer. For the subjective part of this question, I'm interested in hearing other developers (mainly C, Objective-C and C++) about this topic. Do you actually care about stuff like pedantic warnings, etc? And if yes or no, why? Now about Objective-C, I recently completely switched to the LLVM toolchain (with Clang), instead of GCC.     One limitation on Windows Phone 7 is related to System.Net namespace classes. There is no convenient way to read data from web. There is no WebClient class. There is no GetResponse() method – we have to do it all asynchronously because compact framework has limited set of classes we can use in our applications to communicate with internet. In this posting I will show you how to read RSS-feeds on Windows Phone 7. NB! This is my draft code and it may contain some design flaws and some questionable solutions. This code is intended to use as test-drive for Windows Phone 7 CTP developer tools and I don’t suppose you are going to use this code in production environment. Current state of my RSS-reader Currently my RSS-reader for Windows Phone 7 is very simple, primitive and uses almost all defaults that come out-of-box with Windows Phone 7 CTP developer tools. My first goal before going on with nicer user interface design was making RSS-reading work because instead of convenient classes from .NET Framework we have to use very limited classes from .NET Framework CE. This is why I took the reading of RSS-feeds as my first task. There are currently more things to solve regarding user-interface. As I am pretty new to all this Silverlight stuff I am not very sure if I can modify default controls easily or should I write my own controls that have better look and that work faster. The image on right shows you how my RSS-reader looks like right now. Upper side of screen is filled with list that shows headlines from this blog. The bottom part of screen is used to show description of selected posting. You can click on the image to see it in original size. In my next posting I will show you some improvements of my RSS-reader user interface that make it look nicer. But currently it is nice enough to make sure that RSS-feeds are read correctly. FeedItem class As this is most straight-forward part of the following code I will show you RSS-feed items class first. Although we are not able to use more powerful classes that are part of full version on .NET Framework we can still live with limited set of classes that .NET Framework CE provides.
