• How to disable or tune filesystem cache sharing for OpenVZ?

  For OpenVZ, an example of container-based virtualization, it seems that host and all guests are sharing the filesystem cache. This sounds paradoxical when talking about virtualization, but this is actually a feature of OpenVZ. It makes sense too. Because only one kernel is running, it's possible to benefit from sharing the same pages of filesystem cache in memory. And while it sounds beneficial, I think a set up here actually suffers in performance from it. Here's why I think why: my machines aren't actually sharing any files on disk so I can't benefit from this feature in OpenVZ. Several OpenVZ machines are running MySQL with MyISAM tables. MyISAM relies on the system's filesystem cache for caching of data files, unlike InnoDB's buffer pool. Also some virtual machines are known to do heavy and large I/O operations on the same filesystem in the host. For example, when running cat *.MYD > /dev/null on some large database in one machine, I saw the filesystem cache lowering in another, monitored by htop. This essentially flushes all the useful filesystem cache in guests (FIFO) and so it flushes the MySQL caches in the guests. Now users are complaining that MySQL is very slow. And it is. Some simple SELECT queries take several seconds on times disk I/O is heavily used by other machines. So, simply put: Is there a way to avoid filesystem cache being wiped out by other virtual machines in container-based virtualization? Some thoughts: Choosing algorithm for flushing filesystem cache in the kernel. (possible? how?) Reserving a certain amount of pages for a single VM. (seems no option for filesystem cache type of pages that reading man vzctl) Will running MySQL on another filesystem get me anywhere? If not, I think my alternatives are: Use KVM for MySQL-MyISAM running VMs. KVM actually assigns memory to the VM and does not allow swapping out caches unless using a balloon driver. Move to InnoDB and tune the buffer pools, dirty pages, etc. This is now considered to be 'nice to have' on the long-term as not everyone responsible for administration of the system understands InnoDB. more suggestions welcome. System software: Proxmox (now 1.9, could be upgraded to 2.x). One big LV assigned for the VMs.

  Hi, My web server container is Tomcat 6.0.14 JVM 1.6.0_17-b04 BlazeDS 3.2.0.3978 Im sending request from the same local machine via AMF to BlazeDS server and only first request takes about 10secend to proceed. Each next request is preceeding correctly (very fast, less than 0.5s). Anyone know what's the reason of soo slow responsing? I'm a developer, not administrator so please be patient :)

Does Tomcat or Jetty (or any Servlet container) offer a way to cache dynamically generated pages? Or would I need to use a caching reverse proxy like Squid to accomplish that?

I'm trying to open a "post-mavericks" version in my time machine and I can't find where it is. i saw a post that said look under Library/Preferences/Container, i have no such folder or binary document. • UpdatePanel, Repeater, DataBinding Problem

  In a user control, I've got a Repeater inside of an UpdatePanel (which id displayed inside of a ModalPopupExtender. The Repeater is databound using an array list of MyDTO objects. There are two buttons for each Item in the list. Upon binding the ImageURL and CommandArgument are set. This code works fine the first time around but the CommandArgument is wrong thereafter. It seems like the display is updated correctly but the DTO isn't and the CommandArgument sent is the one that has just been removed. Can anybody spot any problems with the code? • applet does not load

  We have a legacy program that was ported from Java 1.3 to Java 1.5. This application involves applets which worked fine before. After porting however, the applet would not load. However there are no errors or exceptions. The app would just try to load it forever. We tried to run it with Java 1.6 and poof! No problems whatsoever. Isn't Java 6 backwards compatible? • Problem deploying servlets in JBoss 5.1 on eclipse.

  Yesterday I created a simple image servlet and attempted to deploy it. I am getting an error on JBoss startup, and then further errors on trying to invoke the servlet. I spent about 8 hours yesterday searching the web for answers and trying different scenarios. I ended up making my JBoss problems worse and then fixing them, but I never did get the servlet to work. As a matter of fact, I even added some code to one of my JSPs to attempt to instantiate the Servlet and call the doGet method. This actually works and outputs the correct debug sequences to the log indicating that the Servlet constructor and doGet methods were called. I also tried following some instructions for creating/deploying a very simple HelloWorld servlet, and that has exactly the same problem. Note that web.xml already contained a servlet put there by JBoss: org.jboss.web.tomcat.service.StatusServlet -- that Servlet does not give any errors in the log. As an experiment, I removed ".web" from that path and ended up getting exactly the same error as I'm getting on my Servlet. So it would appear that JBoss is not able to locate my Servlet given the specified path. Just for kicks, I've tried all sorts of other paths, like just plain MyImageServlet, controller.MyImageServlet, and more. Also, the servlet was originally named ImageServlet, but I attempted the name change thinking maybe there was some conflict with an existing ImageServlet. In all cases, the behavior is the same. After all of my research yesterday, I would say that this appears to be a problem with the JBoss servlet container, and I also learned that JBoss 5.1.0.GA should come bundled with a tomcat servlet container. I installed JBoss on my PC (Windows XP) myself less than 2 months ago (from jboss.org) and used it pretty much as is. Note that I am running on JDK 1.6, so I did use the jboss-jdk6 installation version. I am running on Windows, but I also deploy to a Linux virtual dedicated server. I deployed the current version of my program, including the servlet to the Linux box, but I get the exact same errors. I'm reluctant to just try reinstalling JBoss, since it's hard to place the blame on the JBoss installation when I get the same errors on two completely different installations. I am a bit suspicious of the bundled tomcat servlet container, because using eclipse, I haven't been able to locate any indication that there is a tomcat bundled into JBoss. I did locate servlet-api.jar in the JBoss common/lib directory. This is on the eclipse build path. One possibly useful note: I had previously used a standalone tomcat server for other projects using the same eclipse, so maybe it's some sort of eclipse issue? But, as I said, I do get the same errors when I deploy to the Linux server, and that deployment process just involves ftping files to the server and then putting them into the deployed war package and restarting JBoss. • How to occupy all the space in a div when working with min-height header / footer

  I believe this is a beginner's CSS question. I am utilizing the method described in http://www.xs4all.nl/~peterned/examples/csslayout1.html to fix a header to the top and a footer to the bottom. What I'd like to achieve now is two columns inside the content div. A left one of 200px and a right one that takes up the rest of the width. Unfortunately, I can't get the left and right divs to display correctly: they just don't grow vertically, and if I make the right div "width: 100%" it positions itself underneath the left one. What is the trick to make the left and right div take up all the space within the content div? The layout1.css is the original one. • How to use EJB 3.1 DI in Servlet ? (Could not inject session bean by @EJB from web application)

  I am tying to merging web application(gwt, jpa) to an separate 2 application(business login in ejb/jpa and web client in gwt). Currently i can`t inject my beans from web application (simple servlet) I am using glassfish v3. module limbo(ejb jar) is in dependency of module lust (war). If I use lust with compiler output of limbo everything work perfect (if ejb in web application and the are deploying together as one application). Have I messed some container configuration ? • Fetch a specific tag from Rally in order to compute a value in another field

  I'm extremely new to Rally development so my question may sound dumb (but couldn't find how to do it from rally's help or from previous posts here) :) I've started from the rally freeform grid example - my purpose is to implement a Business Value calculator: I fill the score field with a 5-digit figure where each number is a score in the 1-5 range. Then I compute a business value as the result of a calculation, where each number is weighted by a preset weight. I can sort my stories by Business Value to help me prioritize my backlog: that's the first step, and it works. Now what I want to do is to make my freeform grid editable: I am extracting each of my digits as a separate column, but those columns are display-only. How can I turn them into something editable? What I want to do of course is update back the score field based on the values input in each custom column. Here's an example: I have a record with score "15254", which means Business Value criteria 1 scores 1 out of 5, Business Value criteria 2 scores 5 out of 5, and so on... In the end my Business Value is computed as "1*1 + 5*2 + 2*3 + 5*4 + 4*5 = 57". So far this is the part that works. Now let's say I found that the third criteria should not score 2 but 3, I want to be able to edit the value in the corresponding column and have my score field updated to "15354", and my Business Value to display 60 instead of 57. • centering ul so that columns will be centered too

  In my page I want it so that when you resize the page past the point of the pictures, that the pictures will go into another row, all the way so each picture has it's own row. And then potentially I won't need any media queries. But unfortunaltely I can't find a way to center. I have tried everything I can think of, aside of making hundreds of media queries with different positioning. I can't make it a block because then it won't go into rows, I have tried margin: 0 auto;. I have tried changing the padding, I have even tried using the html align="center". Nothing is working.   Let me try my best to explain what I'd like to have happen, show you the code I have an hopefully I can get some help. So, I'm trying to do a sliding navigation UI from the left side of the screen (like a lot of mobile apps). The main content slides over, displaying the navigation menu beneath. Right now the browser thinks the screen is getting wider and introduces a horizontal scroll bar. However, I don't want that to happen... How do I get the div to animate off screen but not enlarge the width of the screen (i.e. keep it partially off screen)?
