• How can I evaluate a deferred Linq statement when debugging?

  I'm debugging in VS2010, and I want to inspect a string value but all I can get the debugger to show me (through watches, hovering, locals, etc.) is: "System.Linq.Enumerable+<TakeIterator>d__3a`1[System.Char]" I don't care if there are side effects from premature evaluation or whatever, I just want to see what the expression would evaluate to if I evaluate it right now at the current breakpoint. How is this done? Also can I change my code in such a way that it evaluates earlier? Not that I care when I'm not debugging... but just wondering. In case it is relevant... (I doubt it.) I'm stuffing a new entity object before saving it to the database... some fields are assigned with LINQ statements, I'm not sure when they get evaluated under the covers of EF. The DB update fails with 'string or binary data would be truncated... So I'm trying to find the too-long field.

• Double Inner Join generates unexpected error

  In my database I have three tables: Users: UserID (Auto Numbering), UserName, UserPassword and a few other unimportant fields. PrivateMessages: MessageID (Auto Numbering), SenderID and a few other fields defining the message content. MessageStatus: MessageID, ReceiverID, MessageWasRead (Boolean) What I need is a query to which I input a user's id and I get all the private messages he has received. In addition, I also need to receive each message's sender UserName. For this I wrote the following query: SELECT Users.*, PrivateMessages.*, MessageStatus.* FROM PrivateMessages INNER JOIN Users ON PrivateMessages.SenderID = Users.UserID INNER JOIN MessageStatus ON PrivateMessages.MessageID = MessageStatus.MessageID WHERE MessageStatus.ReceiverID=[@userid]; But for some reason when I try saving it in my Access database, I get the following error (translated to English by me, since my office is in a different language): Syntax error (missing operator) at expression: "PrivateMessages.SenderID = Users.UserID INNER JOIN MessageStatus ON PrivateMessages.MessageID = MessageStatus.MessageI". Any ideas what could cause this? Thanks.

  I have problems with saving derived type (TPT) with Entity Framework to database. Let's say I have base entity Animal and derived type Dog. I want to save Dog entity. I thought that I could do it like contex.AddToDogs(), but contex contain only base entity - Animal. So I can only save Animal object - contex.AddToAnimals(). I have also tried with contex.AddObject("Animals", dogInstance), but I get the following error: The member with identity 'NavigationProperty' does not exist in the metadata collection. But I have add EntityReference to the "NavigationProperty". So how to save derived type in EF?

• How to tell iPhone NSURLConnection to abort

  I have an app that makes moderate use of NSURLConnection. These async calls eventually finish and release properly (it looks like), but sometimes it takes some time for them to finish. So, there are times when I exit the app, (note, not just sending it the background), that some of these connections are still active. If I immediately restart the app, the app freezes on startup. (didFinishLaunchingWithOptions never seems to get called). While I'm not certain these connections are the issue, it would probably be good to terminate or cancel any remaining. Any suggestions on how to do this? Bonus points on how to debug the restart also. (I'm already saving NSLog statements to a downloadable file)

• Spring mvc: controller returns [][], usable in jsp with foreach, but how to bind?

  I'm building a spring mvc application. Now the problem I have is the following. I have a controller which adds a DayInfo[][] to my ModelMap. (DayInfo has an id, a title (String) and Text(also String). Now the problem I have is that I have no problem displaying this DayInfo[][] with foreach tags in my jsp. However I'm outputting the Title property as an input box(type text), and I'd like to be able to update this value (and thus saving it to be a database but that shouldn't be a problem). However I'm having trouble with binding this value to the input box so that it is actually returned to the controller. If anyone has some advice it would be welcome.

• Not loading the object caused EF4 (code first) to remove the relationship

  Firstly this is a EF4: Code First - Property Loading question. I'm loading an object like so var item = Context.Table.Find( update.Identifier ); This object has a property Relationship so a table has a Relationship object. Now i'm updating my item but my Relationship object is not toched (and therefore not lazy loaded). Now here's the problem .. I save my item and my relationship to the Relationship object is deleted, apparently the model thinks i set it to null. However it all works if I look at the property before saving. So I'm looking into LoadProperty or doing a query and using Include. Has anyone else come across this issue and how did you get around it?

• JSF - database character encoding

  Hi there, I have a Java Web application using GlassFish 3, JSF2.0 (facelets) and JPA (EclipseLink). The problem I'm facing, is that if I'm saving entities to the database with the update() method, String data loses integrity; '?' is shown instead of some characters. The server, pages and database is/are configured to use UTF-8. After I post form data, the next page shows the data correctly. Furthermore it "seems" in debug that the String property of the current entity stores the correct value too. Dunno if NetBeans debug can be trusted; might be that it decodes correctly, however it's incorrect. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance! Daniel

• Torrents: Can I protect my software by sending wrong bytes?

  Hi, It's a topic that everyone interests. How can I protect my software against stealing, hacking, reverse engineering? I was thinking: Do my best to protect the program for reverse engineering. Then people will crack it and seed it with torrents. Then I download my own cracked software with a torrent with my own torrent-software. My own torrent-software has then to seed incorrect data (bytes). Of course it has to seed critical bytes. So people who want to steal my software download my wrong bytes. Just that bytes that are important to startup, saving and loading data, etc... So if the stealer download from me (and seed it later) can't do anything with it, because it is broken. Is this idea relevant? Maybe, good torrent-clients check hashes from more peers to check if the packages (containing my broken bytes) I want to seed are correct or not? Thanks

Please view your open orders. Any thoughts on why the displayed string does not match the saved string?   I'm using Hibernate 3.2.1.ga, hibernate annotations 3.2.1.ga, and hibernate-jpa-2.0-api. I can't upgrade at this time as I'm working with legacy code. I have this generic method for saving or updating objects ... protected void saveOrUpdate(Object obj) { final Session session = sessionFactory.getCurrentSession(); session.saveOrUpdate(obj); } You can assume that every argument, "obj," will have a member field that is marked with the "@Id" annotation. I would like to change the return type to return an Object that represents the persisted object in the database (meaning if "obj" didn't contain an id before, what is returned is the database object with a populated id. What is the fastest way to do this given my versioning and generic constraints?

• Best way to handle MySQL date for performance with thousands of users

  I am currently part of a team designing a site that will potentially have thousands of users who will be doing a number of date related searches. During the design phase we have been trying to determine which makes more sense for performance optimization. Should we store the datetime field as a mysql datetime. Or should be break it up into a number of fields (year, month, day, hour, minute, ...) The question is with a large data set and a potentially large set of users, would we gain performance wise breaking the datetime into multiple fields and saving on relying on mysql date functions? Or is mysql already optimized for this?

  So my question is ... " When your using the mapping feature to write into a memory buffer, are you really just saving the whole procedure into a queue so directX executes it when finished with other tasks???" I ask this question because this is my perception of mapping when writing to a buffer. I just want to make sure my perception is correct. I understand that the monitor moves extremely slow in compared to the processor, and I am sure the processor can execute 10 times the amount the screen can refresh. • Why do date manipulation in Java with milliseconds?

  I was recently faced with the problem of calculating the number of days from two dates in Java (without using joda, I'm afraid). Searching on the 'net shows most answers to this question say to get the milliseconds of the two days and convert that to days, which I found appalling. However, a scant few show a different approach: use a temporary variable to count how many times it takes adding 1 day to the first date to get to the second. This leaves the conversions to the code that does it best: the library. Why do so many people advocate the first? In another project, I had previously encountered numerous subtle date calculation problems involving time-zones, daylight-saving and once even leap years using seconds to do date comparisions and calculations. All these went away when all the comparison and calculation code was rewitten to use the language libraries. (This was in PHP, though, where the libraries are structured quite differently to Java.) So I'm understandably reluctant to use this "common wisdom" in the world of Java about comparing dates.

• Trying to perform a series of actions on page unload, but the pages unloads too fast to finish them.

  I have a series of actions I want to perform on page unload. Namely if a user is editing an input field, and they refresh or close browser or leave page, I want to save the contents of the field. The actions don't include an AJAX call, so I can't just make it synchronous. It's actually saving to local storage, but the page unloads before the storage can take place. The code is correct, if I add an alert to the actions, the delay allows the rest of the code to finish before it even displays. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Which libraries use the "We Know Where You Live" optimization for std::make_shared?

  Over two years ago, Stephan T. Lavavej described a space-saving optimization he implemented in Microsoft's implementation of std::make_shared, and I know from speaking with him that Microsoft has nothing against other library implementations adopting this optimization. If you know for sure whether other libraries (e.g., for Gnu C++, Clang, Intel C++, plus Boost (for boost::make_shared)) have adopted this implementation, please contribute an answer. I don't have ready access to that many make_shared implementations, nor am I wild about digging into the bowels of the ones I have to see if they've implemented the WKWYL optimization, but I'm hoping that SO readers know the answers for some libraries off-hand. I know from looking at the code that as of Boost 1.52, the WKWYL optimization had not been implemented, but Boost is now up to version 1.55. Note that this optimization is different from std::make_shared's ability to avoid a dedicated heap allocation for the reference count used by std::shared_ptr. • Modifying object in AfterInsert / AfterUpdate

  I have a domain object that holds results of a calculation based on parameters that are properties of the same domain object. I'd like to make sure that any time parameters get changed by the user, it recalculates and gets saved properly into the database. I am trying to do that with afterInsert (to make sure calculation is correct in the first place), and afterUpdate. However, since my calculation is trying to modify the object itself, it's not working - throwing various hibernate exceptions. I tried to put the afterUpdate code into a transaction, but that didn't help. I am afraid I am getting into a circular dependency issues here. The exception I am getting right now is: org.hibernate.StaleObjectStateException: Row was updated or deleted by another transaction (or unsaved-value mapping was incorrect): [esc.scorecard.PropertyScorecard#27] Are the GORM events designed for simpler use cases? I am tempted to conclude that modifying the object you are in the middle of saving is not the way to go.

• Streaming data to the browser as a file of unknown size

  I have some data which is queried from the database and I'd like to send it to the client as a csv file. The file size varies each time due to the fact that the DB data returned can be of any size. Instead of saving this file to the hard disk, I'd like to send it to the browser at the same time it's being processed into a CSV by my algorithm. Response.Write seems useless. For some reason, the file download dialog is only displayed once my processing is finished. This seems odd as I'm writting all my output to the Response.Output stream. I have downloaded files on the web before where the filesize is not known and the browser just keeps on downloading. Is there any way to achieve this?   Hi, I'm pulling my hair out with something that should be very simple: getting line breaks to show up properly in text that's returned from the database with Doctrine 1.2 I'm saving a message: $body = [text from a form textarea]; $m = new Message(); $m->setSubject($subject); $m->setBody($body); $m->save(); Querying the message: $q = Doctrine_Query::create() ->from('Message m') ->where('m.message_id = ?', $id) ->limit(1); $this->message = $q->execute(array(), Doctrine_Core::HYDRATE_ARRAY); In my template: echo $message[0]['body'] ... outputs the text without line breaks echo ln2br($message[0]['body']) ... no difference ... and I've tried every combination I could think of. Is Doctrine doing something to line breaks that's affecting this, or is there something that I'm just missing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Human readable URL causes a problem in Ruby on Rails

  I have a basic CRUD with "Company" model. To make the company name show up, I did def to_param name.parameterize end Then I accessed http://localhost:3000/companies/american-express which runs show action in the companies controller. Obviously this doesn't work because the show method is as following: def show @company = Company.find_by_id(params[:id]) end The params[:id] is american-express. This string is not stored anywhere. Do I need to store the short string (i.e., "american-express") in the database when I save the record? Or is there any way to retrieve the company data without saving the string in the database?

• Inheritance - initialization problem

  I have a c++ class derived from a base class in a framework. The derived class doesn't have any data members because I need it to be freely convertible into a base class and back - the framework is responsible for loading and saving the objects and I can't change it. My derived class just has functions for accessing the data. But there are a couple of places where I need to store some temporary local variables to speed up access to data in the base class. mydata* MyClass::getData() { if ( !m_mydata ) { // set to NULL in the constructor m_mydata = some_long_and complex_operation_to_get_the_data_in_the_base() } return m_mydata; } The problem is if I just access the object by casting the base class pointer returned from the framework to MyClass* the ctor for MyClass is never called and m_mydata is junk. Is there a way of only initializing the m_mydata pointer once?
