  With Ubuntu there comes a nice possibility to check the compatibility of a new (or even old) system and to send these data to the ubuntu developers. The tool to do this is "checkbox-gtk". I would like to know, whether there is a chance to view these results because it would be nice to know if the future system will work with ubuntu. Yes. I know about the certified hardware list, but there are only a few systems listed and i hope that more people test there systems with checkbox and commit the results.

• How does one check if a table exists in an Android SQLite database?

  I have an android app that needs to check if there's already a record in the database, and if not, process some things and eventually insert it, and simply read the data from the database if the data does exist. I'm using a subclass of SQLiteOpenHelper to create and get a rewritable instance of SQLiteDatabase, which I thought automatically took care of creating the table if it didn't already exist (since the code to do that is in the onCreate(...) method). However, when the table does NOT yet exist, and the first method ran upon the SQLiteDatabase object I have is a call to query(...), my logcat shows an error of "I/Database(26434): sqlite returned: error code = 1, msg = no such table: appdata", and sure enough, the appdata table isn't being created. Any ideas on why? I'm looking for either a method to test if the table exists (because if it doesn't, the data's certainly not in it, and I don't need to read it until I write to it, which seems to create the table properly), or a way to make sure that it gets created, and is just empty, in time for that first call to query(...)

In the meantime, my colleagues did commits to the remote repository. Now, I want to: Check whether there are any new commits from other people on the remote repository, i.e. "origin"? Say there were 3 new commits on the remote repository since mine last pull, I would like to diff the remote repository's commits, i.e. HEAD~3 with HEAD~2, HEAD~2 with HEAD~1 and HEAD~1 with HEAD. After knowing what changed remotely, I want to get the latest commits from the others. My findings so far For step 2: I know the caret notation HEAD^, HEAD^^ etc. and the tilde notation HEAD ~2, HEAD~3 etc. For step 3: That is, I guess, just a git pull.

  What's a good strategy for building licensing checking into a Windows desktop app using a Python web application? This is a very open ended question because I don't have the slightest clue how to start to build this feature. What I do have is a number of general concerns: I have developed a commercial Windows desktop application and I want to make money from it but I don't want to build the licensing into the app since it's inevitable that someone will create a keygen or a crack, circulate it online and then it's 'game over' for me. So my idea was to create a web application where people could purchase a license key that is generated by the web app and every time the desktop application is started up, it will 'phone home' to the web app to check whether the license is valid and whether it seems to be in use at multiple locations. I'm just not sure how to do this. Would appreciate any general technical strategies and/or pointers to libraries/modules that might be of use.

  I'm using LINQ together with XDocument to read a XML File. There are items in the XML file without that node. If that happens it's crashing with a NullReferenceException. Is there any possibility to include a "check if null" so I can prevent it from crashing?

  I'm using Delphi 7 and can't predict the target version of Windows. I need to create a database (probably MySql, but might be something else) and define some table structures. I do not need to populate any data. Unfortunately, all of the ADO components seem to expect that a database already exists and they will then allow you to manipulate it. So, since it's only a few simple commands, I thought that I might as well use ShellExectute(). Agree? Disagree? Can anyone give me a sample code which will attempt to run "MySql --version" and let me check the result? After that I should be able to figure it out for myself. Thanks.

  Ok this is going to seem like a dumb question to experienced developers, but questions like this bother me until I ask them. So... is it more efficient to always run a delete query by default whether an entry exists or not, for example to delete a user name after a certain period of time (DELETE * from table where username=user), or should you check if that entry exists first using a select query and mysql_num_rows. What uses more processor on the server side? Obviously one approach contains more code, but I was wondering if certain mysql operations used a lot more cpu than others.

I can take care of all the backup stuff, but the table maintenance baffles me some. Does anyone have any input on how often I should (or how often you do would suffice too) the following tasks? Check Database Integrity Rebuild Indexes Reorganize Indexes Update Statistics Shrink Database? Am I missing anything? Again if you can share how often you do these tasks that would be great...and/or share any general information about your approach to table maintenance that would be helpful. Lastly does it matter what order I run these tasks in (when setting up a job)?

The SQL generated is similar to the following: CASE WHEN ( NOT (([Extent2].[bio] IS NULL) OR (( CAST(LEN([Extent2].[bio]) AS int)) = 0))) THEN cast(1 as bit) WHEN (([Extent2].[bio] IS NULL) OR (( CAST(LEN([Extent2].[bio]) AS int)) = 0)) THEN cast(0 as bit) END AS [C1] LEN is not applicable to TEXT columns. I know DATALENGTH should be used for them... How can I force LINQ to produce such thing? Or any other workaround to test if a text column is null or empty??? Thanks!

  I'm writing a jQuery plugin and I would like my code to take advantage of the jQuery UI show(effect, [options], [speed], [callback]) and hide(effect, [options], [speed], [callback]) functions, which allow you to show and hide elements with a nice animation. However, I'd also like my plugin to degrade gracefully if jQuery UI isn't available, switching back to use the basic, non-animating show() and hide() functions present in the standard jQuery API. I'll need to test for the show and hide functions specifically, as even if jQuery UI is available it could potentially be a custom version, without the Effects components included. At first I thought that I might be able to do something like: if(typeof myelement.show('blind', 'slow') == 'undefined') { myelement.show('blind', 'slow'); } else { myelement.show(); } But of course this doesn't work, as even if UI isn't present, show() is still a function, it just has a different signature—so typeof returns object in either case. So, what's the best way for me to check if jQuery UI is available to my plugin? Any help is much appreciated!

But what I want to know is how do I programmatically check if that plugin is already active? That page view will cause the above code to fire and activate that other plugin. That's how to programmatically activate another plugin from a given plugin as far as I can tell. But the problem is that it gets activated over and over and over again. What would be great is if I had an if/then condition and some function I could call in WordPress to see if that plugin is already activated, and only activate it once if not active.

At some point I might open a form AuxForm with ShowDialog() and then while that modal form is open, the other thread still modifies the MainForm's properties. This is all desired. In one of the methods accessed from another thread I need to execute some code, but only if the modal AuxForm is not open. Is there any way to check this (by using .NET WF Form properties) or I need to use a flag variable? NOTE: None of these properties/methods modify the controls (so no Invoke is required).

• How can I write a "user can only access own profile page" type of security check in Play Framework?

  I have a Play framework application that has a model like this: A Company has one and only one User associated with it. I have URLs like http://www.example.com/companies/1234, http://www.example.com/companies/1234/departments, http://www.example.com/companies/1234/departments/employees and so on. The numbers are the company id's, not the user id's. I want that normal users (not admins) should only be able to access their own profile pages, not other people's profile pages. So a user associated with the company with id 1234 should not be able to access the URL http://www.example.com/companies/6789 I tried to accomplish this by overriding Secure.check() and comparing the request parameter "id" to the ID of the company associated with the logged in user. However, this obviously fails if the parameter is called anything else than "id". Does anyone know how this could be accomplished?
