• Better Alternative to Telerik Draggable Panel ?

  When putting a video in a Telerik Draggable Panel, when dragging the panel, on Firefox the video restart all over again because DOM is reconstructed. They don't seem to have an answer to this. Also we can't seem to be able to control the z-index as it doesn't take into account: when moving the panel over other telerik controls, the video slips under. So any other draggable panel that wouldn't have these annoyances ? Telerik doesn't seem to give any answer so we're afraid we're stuck and we cannot afford to wait longer. Currently think about using Yahoo UI.

  Hi I’m trying to resolve a problem using VB and I need some assistance. I’m very new to the language (1 week). The problem is I have created a user form to show how many hours and minutes has elapsed between two different times similar to a time sheet. The user form consists of two calendars, and under each calendar there are two text boxes; one box each to record the Hour and Minute they left and two further boxes to record the time they arrived back. I have used the code to minus the calendars together (e.g calendar in – calendar out) then times this by 24 to indicate the hours away. Then under the calendar out I have a text box for the user to type in the hour they left. Then I minus the 24 by the Hour out e.g. if it was 24 -15 it will appear 9 ( 9 hours of that day ) then I would add that to the figure they inserted in the text box Hour in (Return Time). e.g 14. Then I would add them to together e.g. 9 + 14 = 23 and have this displayed in another text box Total Hours. Therefore it would display 23 meaning 23 hours. I have then want to show another two text boxes to indicate minutes. One for Minutes Out then Minutes In. I have the problem to convert these minutes for instance if it is the out time is 15:50 and the in time the next day is at 15:55 it displays as 24 (in one text box) and 105 minutes (in the other text box). I would like the minutes added to the hour and have the balance of the remaining minutes in the minute text box. This should display 24 (in one text box) and 5 (in another text box). The ultimate aim is to get a result that shows a person was absent for a number of days, hours and minutes, eg, 2 days, 5 hours and 10 minutes. Any ideas on how I can modify my code to achieve this? • Generalised XML Serialization

  I apologise for asking a question that's probably been asked hundreds of times before, but I don't seem to be able to find an answer in the archives; probably because my question is too basic. I know that XML Serialization by default only touches public members and properties. Properties very often mask a private variable; particularly if they're readonly. Serializing these is fine; the value that the instance exposes to the world is what goes into the XML. But if Deserialization of the same data can't put the value back where it belongs, what's the point of doing it? Is there something I'm missing about how XML Serialization is normally used for classes with masking properties? Surely it can't be that the only answer is explicitly implementing Read/WriteXML - because that's more effort than it's worth!

• Assigning large UInt32 constants in VB.Net

  I inquired on VB's erratic behavior of treating all numerics as signed types back in this question, and from the accepted answer there, was able to get by. Per that answer: Visual Basic Literals Also keep in mind you can add literals to your code in VB.net and explicitly state constants as unsigned. So I tried this: Friend Const POW_1_32 As UInt32 = 4294967296UI And VB.NET throws an Overflow error in the IDE. Pulling out the integer overflow checks doesn't seem to help -- this appears to be a flaw in the IDE itself. This, however, doesn't generate an error: Friend Const POW_1_32 As UInt64 = 4294967296UL So this suggests to me that the IDE isn't properly parsing the code and understanding the difference between Int32 and UInt32. Any suggested workarounds and/or possible clues on when MS will make unsigned data types intrinsic to the framework instead of the hacks they currently are?

  I'm trying to solve problem 50 on Project Euler. Don't give me the answer or solve it for me, just try to answer this specific question. The goal is to find the longest sum of consecutive primes that adds to a prime below one million. I use wrote a sieve to find all the primes below n, and I have confirmed that it is correct. Next, I am going to check the sum of each subset of consecutive primes using the following method: I have a empty list sums. For each prime number, I add it to each element in sums and check the new sum, then I append the prime to sums. Here it is in python primes = allPrimesBelow(1000000) sums = [] for p in primes: for i in range(len(sums)): sums[i] += p check(sums[i]) sums.append(p) I want to know if I have called check() for every sum of two or more consecutive primes below one million The problem says that there is a prime, 953, that can be written as the sum of 21 consecutive primes, but I am not finding it.

• How can I test whether a csv file is currently open and being written to - the file, not a file hand

  I've seen a few questions/answers here that deal with this, but none really give me an answer/solution. I've got a Clipper system writing csv files to a Windows directory. I have a perl script running on a Linux server that is reading a mount of that Windows directory and importing the files to a database. Right now we're using flag files to indicate when a csv is no longer being written to; the flag files gets written after the csv is done. I'd really rather just get what I need from the csv itself, but I can't seem to find a way to tell when the file is open and being written to. lsof doesn't seem to answer my need. I've tried using flock and open the file with an exclusive lock, thinking it might throw an error if the file is being modified, but it doesn't. Any thoughts?

• How much time should it take to find the sum of all prime numbers less than 2 million?

  I was trying to solve this Project Euler Question. I implemented the sieve of euler as a helper class in java. It works pretty well for the small numbers. But when I input 2 million as the limit it doesn't return the answer. I use Netbeans IDE. I waited for a lot many hours once, but it still didn't print the answer. When I stopped running the code, it gave the following result Java Result: 2147483647 BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2,097 minutes 43 seconds) This answer is incorrect. Even after waiting for so much time, this isn't correct. While the same code returns correct answers for smaller limits. Sieve of euler has a very simple algo given at the botton of this page. • Is it easier to write filesystem drivers in userspace than in kernel space?

  I will use the Linux NTFS driver as an example. The Linux kernel NTFS driver only has very limited write support in the kernel, and after 5 years it is still considered experimental. The same development team creates the ntfsmount userspace driver, which has almost perfect write support. Likewise, the NTFS-3G project which is written by a different team also has almost perfect write support. Why has the kernel drive taken so much longer? Is it much harder to develop for? Saying that there already exists a decent userspace application is not a reason why the kernel driver is not compelte. NOTE: Do not migrate this to superuser.com. I want a programing heavy answer, from a programming perspective, not a practical use answer. If the question is not appropriate for SO, please advise me as to why so I can edit it so it is.

What am I doing wrong here? Is there some set-up in my TOOLOPTIONS set-up incorrectly? The set-up in OPTIONS is pretty difficult to understand and it doesn't offer any 'to' or 'reply-from' choices. • Which is the "best" data access framework/approach for C# and .NET?

  (EDIT: I made it a community wiki as it is more suited to a collaborative format.) There are a plethora of ways to access SQL Server and other databases from .NET. All have their pros and cons and it will never be a simple question of which is "best" - the answer will always be "it depends". However, I am looking for a comparison at a high level of the different approaches and frameworks in the context of different levels of systems. For example, I would imagine that for a quick-and-dirty Web 2.0 application the answer would be very different from an in-house Enterprise-level CRUD application. I am aware that there are numerous questions on Stack Overflow dealing with subsets of this question, but I think it would be useful to try to build a summary comparison. I will endeavour to update the question with corrections and clarifications as we go. So far, this is my understanding at a high level - but I am sure it is wrong... I am primarily focusing on the Microsoft approaches to keep this focused. ADO.NET Entity Framework Database agnostic Good because it allows swapping backends in and out Bad because it can hit performance and database vendors are not too happy about it Seems to be MS's preferred route for the future Complicated to learn (though, see 267357) It is accessed through LINQ to Entities so provides ORM, thus allowing abstraction in your code LINQ to SQL Uncertain future (see Is LINQ to SQL truly dead?) Easy to learn (?) Only works with MS SQL Server See also Pros and cons of LINQ "Standard" ADO.NET No ORM No abstraction so you are back to "roll your own" and play with dynamically generated SQL Direct access, allows potentially better performance This ties in to the age-old debate of whether to focus on objects or relational data, to which the answer of course is "it depends on where the bulk of the work is" and since that is an unanswerable question hopefully we don't have to go in to that too much. IMHO, if your application is primarily manipulating large amounts of data, it does not make sense to abstract it too much into objects in the front-end code, you are better off using stored procedures and dynamic SQL to do as much of the work as possible on the back-end. Whereas, if you primarily have user interaction which causes database interaction at the level of tens or hundreds of rows then ORM makes complete sense. So, I guess my argument for good old-fashioned ADO.NET would be in the case where you manipulate and modify large datasets, in which case you will benefit from the direct access to the backend. Another case, of course, is where you have to access a legacy database that is already guarded by stored procedures. ASP.NET Data Source Controls Are these something altogether different or just a layer over standard ADO.NET? - Would you really use these if you had a DAL or if you implemented LINQ or Entities? I have one file needsOptimization.cpp where I would like to override the -O1 with -O2 instead.   I need to compare two dates to show an edit link if it is within 5 mins after the post was made, in php. If after 5 mins dont show anything. $answer_post_date = get_the_time("Y-m-d"); $current_date = date("Y-m-d"); $formated_current_date = strtotime($answer_post_date); $formated_answer_post_date = strtotime($current_date); At this point i have two values: 1274414400 ($formated_current_date) 1276056000 ($formated_answer_post_date) I am not sure what to do next to check if the current date/time is ! 5 mins from answer post date. Any suggestions would be great All i really need the answer to be is a Boolean (yes/no) and if yes display the minuets left to show the link to edit.

  I'm slowly getting up to speed with jQuery and am starting to want to abstract my code. I'm running into problems trying to define click events at page load.
