• Windows 8 Restore Problems

  I created a Windows 8 system image backup on a separate drive before I installed Linux, and during the Linux installation process I accidentally wiped out Windows. I now want to restore my Windows 8 backup that I have on the separate drive. I created a repair USB stick and I followed the directions according to this article. After selecting the image on the hard drive, I get this error: "To restore this computer, Windows needs to format the hard drive." I don't know what this means! The drive partitions are different now then they were when I backup up, so I don't know if that matters. I re-installed Windows and I can restore my files from this backup, but I don't think this covers the registry, etc. I want a full restore. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or how to restore in a different way? Thanks!

• Reading PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5 files in an XP or Windows 98 environment

  Hello all, My priest has 3 computers, Windows 3.1, Windows 98 and Windows XP. Recently his power supply blew out on his Windows 3.1 computer and he needs to get to the data on the hard drive. He's looking into imaging the hard drive and setting it up as a VM, which might be a bit much for him. Ignoring getting the data off the hard drive as a separate problem, are there any programs out there that can read files from PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5. He already has Microsoft Office so solutions involving that are preferable. If he can install the software on his Windows XP or 98 computer, that would be helpful too. Thank you for your help

• Defragment / Performance Monitor without Task Scheduler

  My organisation has a policy of disabling Task Scheduler on all servers and workstations (don't ask, I tried once to wrestle the pig). I need to collect performance stats using Data Collector Sets in Windows 7 or Windows 2008 but the Performance Monitor interface requires Task Scheduler to be running. Is this possible because I'm not trying to schedule anything (except the collection of WMI information every 15 seconds but I doubt it hands that task off to the task scheduler)? Is there any way to trick it into thinking Task Scheduler is running? If not, is there any way to temporarily override the group policy to allow Task Scheduler to run? I've found that most group policy can be overridden in this way by an Administrator by editing the registry. On exactly the same vein, I want to defragment a hard disk on one of my workstations, but I can't get it to start because of the dependancy on Task Scheduler - is it possible to overcome this?

• Wildcard DNS setting in Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS Server not working

  We've got a windows server 2008 R2 DNS server that we are trying to setup a wildcard DNS entry in. So we want proxy.domain.com and *.proxy.domain.com to go to the same IP. Right now, it seems as if the windows server has registered the actual asterisk as the subdomain. So *.proxy.domain.com resolves to the right IP but something like login.proxy.domain.com doesn't. This seems to be a problem specifically with 2008 because we were able to get this working on a 2003 server. Has anyone come across this yet?

Also I made sure add remote admin rule to Windows Firewall via command line without success!: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="windows management instrumentation (wmi)" new enable=yes netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="remote administration" new enable=yes NOTE: If I use the GUI to create the print server port then add the printer via command line: rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /if /b "Xerox WorkCenter 7535" /F C:\Windows\Inf\WC7545-7556_PCL6_x64_Driver\x2DNORX.inf /r "Xerox_192.168.113.253" /m "Xerox WorkCentre 7535 PCL6" THE PRINTER IS SUCCESSFULLY ADDED.   I've upgraded recently from Windows Vista to Windows 8. When I try to rate my computer, it accesses DirectX 9 performance, then processes to DirectX 10 tests: And it gets stuck at this point. In 5–10 minutes, it shows error message: The video card is rather old: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family. I'm pretty sure it does not support DirectX 10. Why does Windows assess it with DirectX 10? And how can I make it skip DirectX 10 tests and get the system rating? The driver was installed automatically by Windows 8 from Windows Update. • Migrating Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 (migrate all FSMO too)

  I own 2 server with Windows 2008 R2, both DC. The first one is of course the Primary DC (with all FSMO). What I would like to do is ro dcdemote the 2nd DC, remove it from domain and replace the Windows 2008 r2 with 2012. I will then rejoin this 2nd DC (with the new 2012 server) to domain and dcpromo it (Server Management). After this is a new DC I would like to temporary transfer all the FSMO to this server, while I'm doing the same operation on what is actually the Primary DC. Is this a stupid solution? What I would like to do is a clean installation, I don't want to upgrade directly those systems. Suggestions? Ideas? Thanks, Mauro

  I installed windows live writer and configured it to connect to my xmlrpc enabled blog engine. After doing so, it threw an unrecoverable error and closed down. After attempting to restart windows live writer, it throws the following exception each time: Description: Windows Live Writer has encountered a problem: Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed. After that, I re-installed it and still get the error every time I try to launch the application. Does anyone know how I can get around this?

  I plugged my windows phone 8 phone into my Windows 8.1 computer for the first time. It asked what to do when a WP8 phone is plugged in. I chose "Open Windows Phone". All worked fine for about an hour. Now when I connect my phone, the Windows Phone application repeatedly opens. I can't even type in another window, as it continues to steal focus to "switch to" the Windows Phone application. Anyone have any ideas to fix this?

• Can't connect to VPN in Windows XP mode

  I have Windows 7 x32 installed on my laptop. I have also Windows XP mode installed. My setup is that my work-remote programs are in Windows XP mode because my VPN installer in Windows XP only. Lately, I have been having troubles getting on / logging in to VPN. I can access the internet in WinXP mode but When I ping the IP address of the target IP of my VPN network (or even just Google.com), I always get a 'Request Timeout'. However, when I ping the same IP address in command prompt in Windows 7, I get 100% data sent. Is there anything I need to adjust? Before, I have been able to connect instantly. Now, it's like trial and error, or I will have to wait for hours just to be able to enter logon credentials in Cisco VPN dialer. NAT is my network adapter in XP mode.

  So I'm kinda stuck in a hard place. I'm wanting to finally re-install Windows and looking at whether I should stick to tried and true Windows 7 or go with the funky and experimental Windows 8. As such I've virtualised Windows 8 RTM, looked at its features and GUI and I'm quite impressed, personally. So I'm willing to upgrade to it. However Windows 8's release is just under 50 days away according to Wikipedia and I'm impatient, so if I go to RTM and like it enough to continue using it, will I be able to go to "release" version and receive updates for it as normal or would I have to reinstall again?

• Database/Web Server and SQL Server Setup - Security?

  This seems really basic, but I couldn't find an answer already ... we are looking to deploy a website to an IIS server, and a database to a separate server. We aren't sure how to best secure this for access by internal users and internet. The IIS Server is not connected to the domain, and neither is the database at the moment. Should it be? Also, if we use SQL Server authentication instead of Windows Authentication, should we just hard-code the user/password into our internal apps?

• Need to setup a RADIUS server to authenticate a Windows client to a Windows server

  I have a server that I have technicians who need to be able to access using shared credentials. However, doing that violates our security policy (!). I need each user to be able to authenticate using their own credentials, but the server in question has to be logged in with a certain login (these two requirements are clearly diametrically opposed). I thought that this would be a great application for a RADIUS server. I know how to setup RADIUS to go from Windows -- Cisco, but I have no idea how to use RADIUS to authenticate Windows -- Windows. Can this be done? If so, how?

  I have 2 Domain Controllers / DNS servers on Windows 2012, their IPs are 10.0.1.10 and 10.0.1.11 Another server acts as the DHCP server for clients, and sets their primary and secondary DNS to the IP addresses of the previously mentioned domain controllers / DNS servers. However I cannot resolve internet domain names, presumably as they are not hosted on the DNS servers. So my question is what do I have to do on my setup to resolve external domains? Thank you! I'd like to be able to install multiple machines as I did before (XP, Ubuntu, Etc,.) but I can't seem to find Windows Virtual PC for Windows 8 any more. Is it still available?, and if not was there something setup in place to replace it? How do I use it? • SQL Server Agents jobs and turning off the server

  I'm really new to SQL Agent jobs, but I am attempting to build up a maintainance regime for a server that will be turned off and on again at unknown intervals. It may run without being shutdown for a month, or it might only be turned on 9-5... we don't know and the client can't tell us because they don't know. So what I'm wondering is, what do I need to do to get SQL Server to run monthly and daily jobs either when they are due, or if the due date is missed, get them to be run when the server is next powered on. I could come up with a mish-mash of periodic jobs and 'on-power-up' jobs, but if there is something more elegant that would be wonderful. Obviously I'll need to ensure the SQL Server Agent is configure to start when the computer is powered up, but what else?

• Can't connect to domain computers until reboot

  I have a domain with about 300 Windows 7 and XP machines, with the domain controllers running Server 2003. Sometimes, I lose the ability to communicate/authenticate with some of the machines until I reboot my computer. This also happens from other computers and regardless of user account and operating system. In other words, say I'm on ComputerA, and I can't connect to ComputerX. I can go to ComputerB and connect to ComputerX, but ComputerB may not be able to connect to ComputerY. If you reboot ComputerA, then it will be able to connect to ComputerX again. Here are some messages from various utilities: sc: [SC] OpenSCManager FAILED 1722: The RPC server is unavailable. mmc (compmgmt.msc): Computer (computer name) cannot be managed. The network path was not found. explorer (\\computer): Windows cannot access \\(computer name). ping: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss) / Average = 1ms

• Apache 2.4.2 with PHP 5.4.4 crashes as soon as phpinfo() script is opened

  As soon as i open a phpinfo() script called version.php apache stops working. Here is the error.log file. • Apache server-status when running as proxy server

  We are running apache as a proxy server and have tomcat behind apache. We are using server_status module but when we try to access server_status as in https://host.com/server-status it redirects to tomcat and we get 404 error. I am quite new to this, tried going through apache docs but unable to figure out the solution.   Have two web servers, development/staging and production. Code and some documentation is moved from the staging area to production either through on-demand jobs or nightly via a global replication job. The production server of course sits isolated in a DMZ. There is some content that gets uploaded to the live server that needs to be replicated back to staging. Our security team is locking the network down (and they should) and restricting access to the live server. Best suggestions for replication of "live" data back to "stage" and backing up the live server also.

  In Windows 7, if you press the Windows key and type the name of a folder, and the folder shows up among the Start menu search results. In Windows 8, if you do the same thing, no folders are listed. The Files filter shows files with matching names, but no folders. I realize that you can still search for folders from the Windows Explorer search box, but navigating that way is a bit slow and clumsy. Is there a quicker way, in particular a way to search directly from the Windows 8 Start screen?

  I am getting a BSOD Error when Running Windows Phone 7.1 Emulator on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, Each time I run the Emulator, it Results in Blue Screen. This is a Fresh Install, This Error also Occurred with my last Windows Install (That is why I formatted the Windows Again), I have already Tried to Re-install it, it also shows "Windows Phone Emulator is Doing a Complete OS boot" (Even at Fresh Install, I know it happens when using Unlocked Emulator Images). I am not able to Test any of my app. Please Help !! EDIT: I am not Running a VM, it is on a Physical Machine.

• Windows 8 will not load color profiles - why?

  I have a Spyder3Express color calibration device. Under Windows 7 the utility that came with it would happily load the custom profile I created with it without any hassles. Under Windows 8 (have just upgraded) there is no visible color shift when it says it has loaded the profile. I have gone into the Windows color management settings and when I select any profile and hit 'Set as Default' nothing happens. They all look the same. So Windows doesn't throw an error, but none of the profiles cause any color shifts at all. I have tried a large number of things, such as changing the global color settings for all user accounts and installing other color management software to see if it will load the profiles. The only way I can get a color shift is if I create a profile using Windows built in utility. Profiles created this way change the appearance of the screen, but any downloaded or created profiles make no difference. I am out of ideas. Please help :)

How can I set up an SMTP server on Windows Server 2008 R2 that is: - Secure; only authorized users/hostnames/etc can send mail - Reliable; e-mails don't get lost - Not treated as spam; when e-mails are received from say gmail/outlook/hotmail they don't go straight to junk ** ** I understand this depends both on the server+e-mail headers AND e-mail content - I'm looking to safeguard the server part.
