  • 'Unsaved Theme' is not appearing when I make a change to a theme in Windows 7

    According to personal experience and Microsoft documentation, when an aspect of a theme (wallpaper, border colour, etc) is changed in the 'Personalization' screen of Windows 7, a theme called Unsaved Theme is supposed to be created/exist under the 'My Themes' heading. However, my 'My Themes' section is always empty, and if I change the background by clicking on the Background link at the bottom of the Personalization page, the background changes, but it still shows 'Harmony' as the selected background, and no 'Unsaved Theme' is created. I have no idea how long this has been happening, but I would like to create some themes, but it never acknowledges my changes as it is supposed to.

  • 3 TB HDD won't reactivate

    After doing a clean install of Windows 8 my Seagate 3 TB HDD won't reactivate in Disk Management. The two volumes are there but I can't use them for some reason. The drive was previously used with a GPT partition table, I can see the two spanned volumes but can't reactivate either. I backed up all my files from Windows 7 onto that drive and desperately need them back. What can and should I do to get the drive back up and running? When I go to Disk → Properties → Volumes, it claims the drive has a MBR partition style, so converting to GPT somehow without data loss should work. gDisk claims to be able to do that but when I point it to the drive, it claims that it has a GPT partition and a protected MBR partition. Any suggestions on what to do?

  • Building a new PC, Installing XP, blue screen of death

    I got a gigabyte barebones kit and am installing windows-XP(SP1) and the initial setup works, then it restarts and goes into the second phase of the setup. Then when installing components (I think that's what it says) it gets half way done and comes up with a blue screen saying IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. BUT! I had gotten past that by installing windows-XP media center addition Now I am trying to install the drivers for my Asus ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card and I get another blue screen of death that doesnt give much info something about address x0000005. Would you think there is something wrong with something in my system or do you think if I got windows 7 that would take care of things? Sorry for probably not giving enough info. Here is what I have MotherBoard - Gigabyte S-series GA-H55M-S2(v) PSU - Ultra 500 watt atx HDD - Sata serial ATA Seagate Baracudda 7200 CPU - Intel i3 Memory - 4gig crucial Graphics Card - Asus ATI Radeon 5770 1Gig DDR5

  • iR Remote TO IR Reciever in phone TO PC

    I'm too cheap and stingy to buy a proper USB infrared receiver for my PC, however my phone (Nokia N95) has a receiver built in. I know for a fact that there must be some API to access it (for Tx at least) as the irRemote works. Is there any good programs available or how would I start to set up so that my phone sends all the iR data captured by it over Wifi or Bluetooth to my Windows PC for use in XBMC or other programs?

    I have difficulty open opening word and excel files suddenly. Only particular office file give me the problem. These files were previously scanned by combo fix and I believe they were damaged. The error response that I from office is Excel cannot open the file xxx.xlsx because the file format is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file. This is for excel and a similar kind of error response comes for word. The file looks fine. I mean the size vise... Please help me with this problem. I really appreciate your help and time....

    Hi, I’m working on a very simple timesheet for my work in Excel 2007 but have ran into trouble about calculate the hours and minutes between two time periods. I have a field: timestart which could be for example: 08:30 Then I have a field timestop which could be for example: 12:30 I can easy calculate the result myself which is 4 hours but how do I create a “total” table all the way down the cell that calculate the hours spend on each entry?   • Mouse clicks stop working sometimes

    I am having a serious issue with my mouse in which it will randomly not be able to click or cause other problems. Here is the breakdown: Sometimes, I can no longer left-click on many of my windows/taskbar (in order to focus them). Even though I can still left click on my desktop icons or the currently active window, I cannot focus any of the others. Other times, when I have a browser open, I will hit to go back one page and it will automatically go forward one page. I know it's a mouse issue because this behavior stops when I unplug the mouse. Things will be fine when I plug the mouse back in, but eventually the behavior starts up again. My mouse is a Razer Diamondback 3G and I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. Any ideas?

    I used to access newsgroups via the Berlin university's facilities - they provided free acccounts, but that stopped a few years ago. Since then I have been using Google groups to access newsgroups but it's not the same thing as accessing Usenet via a newsreader like Pan. If any of you still access newsgroups via news readers, where is your account? Please mention if it's free or paid, if paid, how much do you pay, as well as how satisfied you are with the service. Edit: While binaries may be a reason to have a Usenet account, that's not the motivation for me. It is the ability to use the newsreader client features that Google groups doesn't provide.

  • Can't connect to wireless-n in dual mode.

    I recently purchased a Acer Aspire Revo AR3610-U9022. This little nettop uses a Atheros AR5B91 Wireless Network Adapter. I also have a Netgear RangeMax NEXT Wireless Route (model WNDR3300). I have been using this router in dual mode (11G and 11N) on my normal desktop without a problem (Mode: Up to 270Mbps at 5GHz & 54Mbps at 2.4 GHz), but doing this, my Revo won't detect the 11N network as being around... my desktop still does, but the Revo, nope... just the 11G. However, when I switch my router over to just "Up to 270Mbps at 2.4GHz", it kills the 11G entirely, but the Revo recognizes the 11N network. I'm a programmer by trade, and this hardware-y stuff confuses me more than it should. Is there any way that I could set this stuff up so my Revo can connect to the 11N part of my router, but keep the 11G around? :) Thanks!

  • Volume licenced copy of MS Office 2007 shows "Non Commercial Use" in title bar

    I have just removed the demo copy of Office 2007 preinstalled on a new laptop and replaced it with an install of the full professional edition downloaded from the MS Volume Licensing site and installed one of our volume licence keys, yet the apps (Word etc.) show "Non Commercial Use" in the title bar, which is what usually happens in the Home and Student edition. I have tried: Deleting the Office registration keys in the registry and using one of our other Office 2007 volume licence keys (we have 7) when prompted to re-register Uninstalling Office completely and reinstalling it from a newly-downloaded ISO burned to CD and also from a compressed file that installs from hard disk/USB stick (both from Microsoft - no dodgy stuff) Yet the non-commercial message persists. Although it's a cosmetic issue, the laptop is going to be used for customer presentations and so the sales person is rightly concerned about the image this portrays. I presume there may be something floating around the registry or in a file somewhere but I can't find it. Articles I have found elsewhere just refer to the message being related to the use of a Home and Student licence key, which is 100% not the case. Any thoughts? Thanks.

  • Cygwin won't start Gitk

    Hey I have followed this answer to solve problem with running GUI applications under Cygwin. So far it seems okay, but when I try to open gitk it will complain on that it cannot find any git repository here. I am standing in the correct folder though, and running git from console it works (I can push, pull, and so on) But gitk won't start as it say it is not any git repository here. Anyone know how to fix it?     I've started getting an error on my windows machine when sending an email through Windows Mail, using Mobile Me: An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Test' Server Error: 503 Server Response: 503 5.7.0 TLS already in use. Server: 'smtp.me.com' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC65 Protocol: SMTP Port: 587 Secure(SSL): Yes I've checked and double-checked my credentials, and outbound mail settings, and they're correct. I've deleted and re-added the account, and I get the same issue. I'm able to receive email fine. Note - this issue only affects one PC - my laptop has no issues. Any suggestions on what Error 503 means, or how I would fix this?

    I have my Windows Automatic Updates set to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.". However, if I install Microsoft Security Essentials, can I have the daily virus signatures downloaded and applied without being prompted each time by Windows Update? I like to have the control of installing general Windows Updates, but prefer not to have to accept the signature definitions that I expect to have applied every day (would get a bit tedious). Using XP Home SP 3. Just wanted to check this over before deciding whether or not to go for Microsoft Security Essentials.

    Hello I need to record the demo of a program in Windows, and save this into an AVI file so that I can upload it to YouTube. I tried Wink for this, but unless I overlooked it, it saves files as Flash (FLV), which YouTube refused. Is there an open-source alternative? I don't need something hardcore, just a tool that will let me save a demo, and insert a couple of slides where the demo stops to let the user read stuff and click on a button to resume watching.   • Word 2007 cannot open old doc files anymore

    Since last week I am unable to open old doc files with Microsoft Word 2007. Whenever I try that I first get a warning about converters being a security issue. (I can disable that in the registry). After accepting (or disabling) this warning, however, I just get the following error message: Unglütiger Datentyp (Word 6.0/95 für Windows & Macintosh which means in English: Invalid document type (Word 6.0/95 for Windows & Macintosh I tried to goolge both the German and the translated error message but did not find anything related. The files in question can be opened by other users for the windows terminal server without problems.

  • Exchange enrypted messages with a single recipient

    I need to exchange encrypted messages with another party. These would be in the form of email like communication (not instant chat). The solution needs to be portable (USB stick). I've tried "Portable Thunderbird/Enigmail/Gnupg/Hotmail account" but it's just impossible to setup portable, countless meaningless error messages. Anyway, I would prefer something more straightforward. Notes: We won't know each others IP addresses. Our computers will often be switched off. Encryption would ideally be using a common password. Is there a solution to this?

    Hi, I hope someone can help me. I have a 3 yr old MacBook Pro and lately I've been getting an error msg when I try to download something to my machine, This is what it says: Download error /Users/scarletriley/Downloads/the name of document goes here- no spaces of course! could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred.
