• Public IP shows strange characters and Facebook registers logged-in session to a different location

  I'm encountering some IP strangeness today and hoping to find an explanation. In short, I'm based in Seattle, WA with my ISP being Comcast. While browsing Facebook's account settings, I noticed that my active session was located to Mount Laurel, NJ. At that point I ran a search in Google for 'my public IP', which returned an interesting result: a string of characters in the following format: 2601:8:b000:xxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx Normally, a search for my IP returns something like: 67.xxx.xx.xxx A phone call to Comcast got me nowhere, but using Comcast's phone-menu debugging tools, I was able to send a 'refresh signal' to my modem. After that, the search for 'my public IP' yielded the expected result... for about 5 minutes, and then it returned to the new string of characters. Does anyone know of an explanation for this?

• How do I force apt-get to install a package that will not install due to a bug introduced by Ubuntu 11.10?

  Ubuntu 11.10 separated out python-profiler from the Python standard library due to licensing philosophies. (According to what I could Google, correct me if I'm wrong.) This is an active bug since October for 11.10. I have Python 2.7.2 installed, so the dependency errors are wrong. 'apt-get check' does not resolve the problem. • Change the white background in webpages to another color

  I'm currently using a dark theme in firefox. It looks really nice, but many webpages use a plain white background. The resulting contrast is a little unpleasant and sometimes hurts the eye when I switch from a dark tab to a white tab. Is there a way to make firefox replace white backgrouns everywhere with some other color (light gray, for instance)? It could be a Stylish script, a userChrome.css hack, or anything that works (preferably as light as possible). To make myself clear: after I achieve my objective, the background color whenever I visit the super-user site should be light-grey instead of white, and the same should happen to any other site with a white background (google sites, tech crunch, etc). Is there a way to do that?

I was fed up of dictionary.com bringing all those popups and the stupid definitions of Google's dictionary. So I decided to scratch my own itch. I randomly stumbled on the site called Wordnik and it provides with all examples plus definitions plus lots more for words and its popup-free (as far as I know). • Setting up phpMemCacheAdmin on CentOS 5.5

  I have been able to setup phpMemCacheAdmin (http://code.google.com/p/phpmemcacheadmin/) on CentOS and am able to view the localhost MemCache statistics however whenever I add other MemCached nodes the config is never changed. I am fairly certain it has something to do with permissions however I am unable to track down what exactly needs to be done, or how to do it. The install was pretty straightforward: wget http://phpmemcacheadmin.googlecode.com/files/phpMemCacheAdmin-1.1.3r161.tar.gz tar xvzf phpMemCacheAdmin-1.1.3r161.tar.gz chmod +w Config/Memcache.ini But, it also states that Apache has rw right in the temp file folder (default : Temp/) and the entire config directory (Config/) -- that is the part I am unsure of. Help!

  Getting Started With OAuth 2.0, by Ryan Boyd, provides an introduction to the latest version of the OAuth protocol. The author starts off by exploring the origins of OAuth, along with its importance, and why developers should care about it. The bulk of this book involves a discussion of the various authorization flows that developers will need to consider when developing applications that will incorporate OAuth to manage user access and authorization. The author explains in detail which flow is appropriate to use based on the application being developed, as well as how to implement each type with step-by-step examples. Note that the examples in the book are focused on the Google and Facebook APIs. Personally, I would have liked to see some examples with the Twitter API as well. In addition to that, the author also discusses security considerations, error handling (what is returned if the access request fails), and access tokens (when are access tokens refreshed, and how access can be revoked). This book provides a good starting point for those developers looking to understand what OAuth is and how they can leverage it within their own applications. The book wraps up with a list of tools and libraries that are available to further assist the developer in exploring the APIs supporting the OAuth specification. I highly recommend this book as a must-read for developers at all levels that have not yet been exposed to OAuth. • Postfix configuration: different outgoing hosts based on sender

  I've seen a few answers to this on the web, but nothing definitive nor any good examples. I relay all my mail out through Postfix, currently everything sent to my ISP's mail server. However, there are a few users with gmail accounts or gmail-hosted accounts; I'd like to route their outgoing mail through Google's servers (since it will then appear in their Gmail sent folder). All email NOT from one of these senders should go out through the default relayhost. I believe I need to use the "sender_dependent_default_transport_maps" configuration within Postfix, but can't find a good example on what this setup looks like. Can anyone point me at a specific setup?

• Can you add doubleclick macros to exisiting ads

  Setup: A few weeks back I made some very simple html5 "ads" to run on a few of our partner sites. They weren't paid ads as we also manage these sites, however there are a few of them, so I made a modular solution that is hosted on one of our web servers and included on each page via javascript which outputs an iframe. Each search (ad has a search box) or click appends a url param that we track using custom vars in Google Analytics. In essence, the ad is a HTML page served in an iframe via javscript. Problem: We have an opportunity to run these ads on a third party site, I had sent them a brief how-to for inserting them and they came back saying that: The creative code doesn't contain the %u macro. We can’t substitute the default click-through URL without it. I am somewhat familiar with doubleclick from a web developer's POV, i have inserted DC dart tags before and even have implemented the ad tool for publishers. I have not, however, actually ever created an ad for the doubleclick network before. I assume the publisher needs these tags to track clicks and hence charge us. However, they have not responded to me in regards to these questions. Are macros something I can just add to or replace the existing links with, or do I need to completely setup the ad with doubleclcik - a big issue in the short term given we do not have a advertiser's account set up with them. • How to get sharing options to stick - ubuntu 12.04

  I'm having a really hard time trying to get my sharing set up on my 12.04 system. I've tried both desktop version and server - I'm a bit of a linux n00b, so I need a GUI, command line is beyond me and no time to learn it (not till after I get the shares setup, at least) My problem is, whenever I try to set permissions in Nautilus, it just reverts back to the default which is to "none" Basically when I choose an option... it doesn't stick. I can create shares, and it asks me if I want to add permissions automatically - but they do not stick either. When I go to look at the shared folders in Windows (or even on my Android Phone, or Mac) it gives me permissions errors and doesn't let me log in, despite me clicking "allow guest access" I have no idea what to do or where to go. I've tried searching forums and google, and I've tried everything I come across - no avail. I've even tried Mint builds to see if it's different, no change there either. Please help! I really want to setup a server to share my media files and do backups in my house. Thanks for your help!

• How to recover broken dpkg after lucid-bleed ppa-purge?

  Did a ppa-purge of lucid-bleed and dpkg didn't downgrade properly and now it is broken. dpkg: PreDepends: tar (>= 1.23) but 1.22-2ubuntu1 is to be installed What scares me is when simulating the removal of dpkg I get: Removing this package may render the system unusable. Are you sure you want to do that? and then the list of packages which depend on it, which will also be removed, is obviously very long. Is it safe for me to remove dpkg just to reinstall it? How would I ensure the list of packages which were also removed are then reinstalled? Will forcing the version of dpkg help? (FYI: simulating a forced version brings up a much smaller list of applications which will also be removed). Any other suggestions? • Why doesn't the "scroll bar" on my laptop touchpad work?

I recently did an update (at some late hours) and i can no longer use right side of the touchpad to scroll. Can anyone tell me how to get the same function as I had in Windows and Ubuntu 11.10 ? • How to stay productive? What time management software is available?

  So since I started using askubuntu.com I've spent entirely too much time here answering other people's questions. Now maybe someone could help me with that by answering this one. I'm looking for time management software for Ubuntu. There are a number of these programs floating around for Windows. RescueTime is one that is very popular. The key features that I'd like to see in a linux app that RescueTime has are: Automatically records what application you are using, including what websites you visit. Reports and graphs on your time usage. Notifications for when you have spent too much time on "distractions." While RescueTime doesn't officially support linux, there is an open source RescueTime Linux Uploader. Unfortunately, it seems to only support Firefox and Epiphany for website tracking. I'm a Chromium user. The other major drawback to RescueTime is that it is a web service. I'd much rather not upload detailed information about how I spend my time to some third party. Google already knows too much about me as it is. Project Hamster, a GNOME time management app, comes so close. Sadly, it does not automatically track what you are doing. If I had enough discipline to manually report to an applet what I was up to, I doubt I'd need this. (How cool would it be if they provided some Zeitgeist integration to handle that part?)

  We have our own domain. Our email is hosted by Google Apps. We switched web servers and name servers to a new provider. In the switch, I forgot to move the MX record. When people tried to send emails to our domain, there was no bounce back. We fixed the MX record and now receive email. Is there anyway to retrieve the emails that were sent in the month when there was no MX record? I doubt it because there was no MX record on our name server. Where would the emails have gone since they did not bounce back?

• What is a easiest way to implement Mail Server in ubuntu and hook in webmail through XAMPP?

  Hi Everyone, I currently have xampp running on my ubuntu server. I tried a variety of things including installing, postfix+dovecot+roundcube+postfixadmin (postfix+dovecot work I think, postfix admin also works, roundcube works and connects to dovecot but i cant create user accounts, or figure out how that works), citadel (it installed, but I have no idea how to make it work with xampp for webmail) and i tried messing with exim and vexim a bit also. In short I feel like this should be a lot easier, and I can't figure it out haha. XAMPP works fine. I got my server running with everything. I was thinking about mercury mail, but I need a webmail solution also. I was thinking about google apps, but 50 bucks a year per user is a steep change from free. Thanks for the help!

  Permissions are fine (inherited) and checking effective permissions everything is AOK. As you can see i can make a file in the docs folder but not the pdf_docs subfolder. The folder has a lot of files and is quite large- i wonder if i've reached a limit? I couldn't find anything on google. Size: 51.0 GB (54,819,804,885 bytes) Size on disk: 52.0 GB (55,925,719,040) Contains 554,697 Files EDIT I've just checked and i can delete files... and for every file i delete i appear to be able to create a new one. This definitely points toward a limit in terms of number of files?

  I have worked extensively in developing web applications using PHP and ASP.NET, but one of the questions that I'm constantly asked by customers is whether to move forward with a php website or an asp.net website. So naturally the first thing that comes to mind is to answer the question like this: PHP is open-source and ASP.NET is from Microsoft. Usually after something like that is said the customer has a blank look on there face. Apparently the fact that one is open source and the other isn't doesn't really faze them. And for good reason, because when I first heard it, it really doesn't tell me much. I know from working with both that each have their + and - when it comes to developing websites. NOTE: THIS QUESTION IS NOT TO QUESTION WHICH IS BETTER TO DEVELOP WITH. THIS QUESTION IS INTENDED TO BE OBJECTIVE. My question is what are differences between ASP.NET and PHP as far as Features Security Extendability Frameworks Average Development Time And when one is generally used over the other for certain types of projects. I am trying to compile a list of facts to be able to compare with the customer what developement platform is better for there particular project. I have done a simple search on google and a ton of articles come up, but the problem is the majority are usually biased towards PHP or ASP.NET. Also if you can maybe provide examples from experience when one technology was more preferable than the other that would be awesome.

  Possible Duplicate: Extracting user requirements from a person who does not know how to express himself As a hobby freelancer I'm new to this. I've never had a non-technical client before explain to me what his future website is supposed to do. A person wants me to make a website for him and he basically explained to me what's it about. However, he's not a technical person and he just doesn't understand what I need to know and how to properly describe/explain it to me. When I ask him how a user is supposed to submit an entry to the website he told me "He fills out a form.", which is not really helping me. This was just an example, it goes on for other sections of the website as well which are a lot harder to explain. The website will be aimed at a specific professional user demographic and I have no clue about their profession and how their industry works. I tried to find some good Product Requirements Document templates on Google but none of them really seemed like they could help him understand how to write it so I can understand what he wants/needs. Can somebody please give me a hint on how to deal with such non-technical clients?

• Multilingual website without language component in the URL

  I'm working on a website for Canada which will have French and English versions. For SEO purposes, I would like to avoid using any language tag in URLs because I believe it will have more impact (e.g. example.ca/products better than en.example.ca/products or example.ca/en/products). I believe this is technically possible because the2 languages are sufficiently different that the URLs won't be conflicting with one another (e.g. if you want a "product" page, it will be /products in English, and /produits in French so you know which language the URL is about). Since Google (and most likely others) doesn't rely on the URL (nor HTML tags) to determine the content language I don't see any problems with search engines. To make this possible I've thought about using a cookie distinct from the session cookie (e.g. example.org_language) with long term expiry (e.g. N years) that will memorize the language chosen by the user. That way when people visit the website with a new browser session, they get served the proper language. I have already given up on users being able to switch one page from English to French: when people will chose English or French from the menu they will be redirected to the corresponding version of the home page. Do you foresee any problems with not using a language component in the URL (whether domain or path)? (as long as one makes sure URLS don't conflict).

  I would like to build an Advertising project with PHP, MySQL, and Javascript. I am talking about something like... Google Adsense BuySellAds.com Any other advertising platform My question is mainly, what do I need to look out for to prevent people cheating the system and any other issues I may encounter? My design concept. An Advertisement is a record in the Database, when a page is loaded, using Javascript, it calls my server which in turn will use a PHP script to query the Database and get a random Advertisement. (It may do kore like get an ad based on demographics or other criteria as well) The PHP script will then return the Advertisement to the server/website that is calling it and show it on the page as an Image that will have a special tracking link. I will need to... Count all impressions (when the Advertisement is shown on the page) Count all clicks on the Advertisement link Count all Unique clicks on the Advertisement link My question is purely on the query and displaying of the Advertisement and nothing to do with the administration side. If there is ever money involved with my Advertisement buying/selling of adspace, then the stats need to be accurate and make sure people can't easily cheat the system. Is tracking IP address really the only way to try to prevent click fraud? I am hoping someone with some experience can clarify I am on the right track? As well as give me any advice, tips, or anything else I should know about doing something like this?

• Site failing randomly - could it be Cloudflare or something weird in the JS?

  I've been working on a simple site that uses javascript to fade through some fullscreen background images as well as some other simple animations. I've tested the site on Chrome, Safari, FF and Opera on OSX, IE8+ on Win7 and Chrome & FF on Ubuntu and everything looks as I'd expect it to. However, I've had reports of the site failing to load (stops at the stage where the background fades up) on Safari and Chrome on OSX and Win. I can't replicate this on any setup so I'm finding it impossible to troubleshoot. Google's instant preview shows the site fine as does most of the options at browsershots.org so I'm really scratching my head. I'm running the site's traffic through Cloudflare and I'm wondering whether anyone can see (or knows from other sites) why Cloudflare might be mangling the JS or causing a problem somehow (I don't get any errors in the JS error console). Of course, if you can replicate the problem on your machine and can suggest an area to look at that would be amazing but I'm hoping that, like me, you don't see any problem with the site!   I am on Windows 7 and using Firefox browser. I am using WiFi, but since the morning I cannot access the Internet via the browsers (Firefox, Chrome, or IE). The laptop shows there is Internet connection, Skype is online, but I can't reach the Internet. Then I launched Tor application which creates secure channel and provides its Firefox browser. Well, I can now access the Internet over that browser. So, what might be the problem causing this malfunction? The error: The connection has timed out The server at mail.google.com is taking too long to respond. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. • PHP + IIS Application Pool Identity Windows\Temp permissions

  I am currently running PHP (5.3) on IIS 7.5 on a Win2k8 R2 Web Edition Server and would like to know what, if any, problems or security vulnerabilities I may introduct into a system by assigning Read, Write, Modify & Execute permissions to either IUSR account or the IIS_USERS group for %SystemRoot%\Temp? Should I be altering permissions to that folder at all (as Windows reminds me I probably shouldn't when i attempt to change them)? Should I create a temp folder somewhere else and set permissions accordingly? The problem is when i set Anonymous Authentication (I'm guessing is a more secure option???) to use the App Pool identity, when starting sessions PHP gets stuck in a loop because it's unable to create session files in the %SystemRoot%\Temp folder due to lack of permission on the application pool user or IIS_USERS group. Another problem being ImageMagick (PHP Extension) is being denied access to %SystemRoot%\Temp to write temporary files so is throwing exceptions.
